Even more mind boggling was goaltenders not wearing any facial protection until the 60's.
My uncle took over 200 stitches to his face before finally molding one of the earliest styles of masks along with Jacques Plante.
I remember hearing a story how he faced a slapshot from some Soviet player (i think or a Swede maybe?) in the World Championships that had it hit him, likely would have killed him.
Edit....cant believe i found this online when he did put the mask on the first time....pure awesomeness for me. Will have to send it to my aunt.
