It certainly would open the door for another team in the division, but regardless, the Sox are the best team in the AL by a wide margin, IMO.

I'd swap NFL and NHL. Yeah, if the QB or top WR gets hurt, maybe a top LB, but other than that, the loss of one player in the NFL can be covered up very easily.
I'd argue that any top 6 forward or top 4 d-man or a starting goalie hurts an NHL team more.
I agree with your premise though. Look at the Cardinals who seem to lose a pitcher from their rotation every year and are still fantastic.
