Let me get this straight. Apparently Ascent Entertainment, which owned the Avs, did not have the cash in hand to match the offer sheet. But, per

Beacon Pictures was a sibling company in Ascent's portfolio and one of the producers of "Air Force One." Drawing on business lessons he learned creating the film with Ford, Lyons negotiated a deal that kept Sakic in Denver while also getting a new arena built.

So Harrison Ford apparently had nothing to do with it. Beacon negotiated a deal to raise money to make a movie that just happened to have Harrison Ford in it, and Ascent borrowed the technique to negotiate a similar deal so the Avs could raise cash so they could match the offer for Sakic.
