I don’t really see it as “doubling down.” They have a severely under-performing 10.5M player. They can’t buy him out. And the only way to trade him is to do the same thing they’d be doing if they want him to start performing: play him in the hope he gets out of it.
What do people want? Huberdeau on the fourth line doesn’t help anybody. And as bad as he’s been, the only other winger that has produced better is Blake Coleman. That’s not exactly a positive for Huberdeau, but it’s pretty ugly for everyone else as well.
