It's also an issue of where the market is too vs. then. This is the worst possible time, since they introduced the cap, to take on more cap. Look at the ridiculous moves that went into the Tanev trade to move 1/4 of the remaining cap left on Tanev's $4.5 million expiring contract. It took a third party to accommodate moving a few hundred k. Now were trying to move a re-signed Hanifin with likely 8 years and $8ish million.
And the reason the Flames were able to get a good return for a signed Tkachuk is because the Panthers sent a big chunk of cap back the other way. Hard to see a deal that involves BOS or TB sending significant cap back.
