Obviously there's likely to be a gap between his minimum ask and the Flames max offer, but that's contract negotiations.
I still think we see him traded as we likely can't pay both what Lindholm asks and Kadri what we are already and still have room to flesh out the roster.
I'm speculating:
- Lindholm traded at or before the draft, for mostly futures
- Kadri in a 1A role with Backlund 1B this year, see who has chemistry but similar icetime.
- As soon as the following year we see a young C (Zary/acquisition/this year's pick) start taking on some top6 minutes, heavily supported by the wingers as far as production, Backlund dips back down to the shutdown/3rd line
- A year or two later we dip back into the FA market picking up an early 30s C to support the younger top6 C & Kadri, as Backlund's career wraps up.
Essentially the retool approach.
