Thoughts by plot-line:
Spoiler!
Main Hawkins group: Awesome. Characters have such fun dynamics between them, including familar pairings (Dustin and Steve) and new (Robin and Nancy). Max as the feature character in the group feels right. Eddie's a nice addition. Erica is less annoying than she was in previous seasons.
Eleven: I'm digging that they're diving into her origin story a little more, and it's really great writing that after three seasons, they can expand her origin story and yet not have it feel tacked on.
Guys in a van: The weak link in my opinion. The home invasion scene was awesomely shot, but the lack of any development in Will and Mike's friendship, beyond one clearing-the-air scene, is a bit disappointing... though Will did bring the poster he made so hopefully there's some payoff to that. Jonathan's a disappointment, and Argyle might be my least favorite character in the series thus far. It was surprising that they left this group out of episode 7, so I'm hoping that they've got a good plan for them in the final two. If they could ditch Argyle in Utah, that would be a good start.
Joyce and Murray: Fun, pure comedy team. The airplane fight was a great scene.
Hopper: Decent, if unspectacular. But the payoff of his reunion with Joyce was worth all his moping and despairing.
The Jocks: fun sorta-villain group - even if jocks vs. nerds trope is generally overdone, it just feels such an important part of the 80s experience (especially if you were a nerd).
The Vecna/orderly reveal was really good. Prior to it, I said to my wife that I think he's going to be subject 001; she said to me that she thought he was going to be Vecna. Amazingly, we both could feel that we were right, but also be surprised by the full story. The double-reveal with Eleven and Nancy both learning parts of Vecna's origin story in different ways was one of the more novel villain monloguing scenes I can recall.
I should add, the scope of this season just feels amazing. So many plot lines, and other than Mike/Will, it never feels like any of them were neglected, and few of them (maybe the trip to see Suzy?) feel tacked on.
