A similar scenario was on my written driving test and the one question I got incorrect for answering that it is ok to temporarily exceed the posted speed limit to make a pass on a two-lane road.

I'm a habitual speeder anyways, so it's kind of moot for me, but regardless of the law, my experience tells me that the safest pass is the one that takes the least amount of time, whether on a two lane country road or a multilane highway.
