For these older laptops, If you dont need all the windows based programs on it, I suggest just running Ubuntu as opposed to Windows. You will be shocked at how much better it runs, and it is freeware that has everything you need. You can do a format of your C Drive and install Ubuntu on it, or just run Ubuntu over top of Windows.
