Doesn't sound like a motherboard to me, sounds more like the HDD or just too much stuff installed and it's running out of RAM and constantly having to read and write from the HDD, and the HDD is super slow in those older laptops.

I'd start with a fresh install of the OS. If you are willing to put a little money into it you could replace the HDD with an SSD, and add more RAM if it's 4GB or 6GB.
