In fairness, a lot more than just a new contract was going on with Gaudreau:
- Missed all of camp
- Monahan missed all of camp
- Monahan started the season with a bad back
- They started the season with a new RW that they hadn't played one minute with prior
- New head coach with a very different system
- Terrible start for the team
- Huge pressure for him and Monahan, with giant new contracts
When you break it down, it's actually difficult to come up with a scenario that would be much worse.
The Bennett situation has none of those variables.
