Getting in front of it was the least bad choice available to him at the time at at least the FBI could have escaped relatively unscathed. Russians knew exactly how to exploit this. It was a lose-lose situation.

So you're saying the head of the FBI was outwitted by the Russians. Still sounds like he was kinda crap at his job. He could have gotten ahead of it and not editorialized his comments about Hillary, which had the same effect of the story coming out anyway. He got played like a fiddle is what this looks like.
