Disappointed to see Byron waived - love the guy's compete level and I think he provides a huge spark for the team when he plays. However, the bottom line is that the team needs to get bigger and as Resolute said, Ferland essentially took his spot.
As for Raymond, good guy but he simply didn't earn a spot. It can be a cruel business at times, but they get well compensated for that.
My guess is that Smid is very close and they don't want to put him on IR. So they waived these two instead.
Granlund - sitting in first call-up position, I would think. And the fact is that he will get more ice-time in Stockton (and creates more room here) by going down for now.
Ortio: the fact that he wasn't put on waivers speaks volumes. If he plays well, he is here to stay and they will find a solution with one of the other two (I still think Hiller is the odd man out). If on the other hand, Ortio struggles, waiving him after that fact shouldn't be a concern.
