I just ran a quick excel calculation and noticed that all other winners are generally 21-24, while Kariya was about 19 when he won, right about Gaudreau's age.

Yeah, it's generally a third or fourth year player's award. Kariya is the only freshman to win it, and Ryan Miller and Ryan Duncan are the only sophomores to win it -- and they were both older sophomores (Miller was almost 21 and Duncan was almost 22).
Gaudreau would become only the second player under the age of 20 to win the Hobey.
