I second the learning on your own thing. I did that with 3DSmax and it worked out well. I went from barely being able to create a preset teapot to this;
in a couple of months. Mind you, that's not mind-blowing by any means and I was terrible at texturing and UV mapping, but hey...it was out of boredom, not money.
