Any Korean food market in town will sell kimchi. I've even seen it in Costco a few times. The one on 10th Avenue and 12th Street SW in the Korean plaza sells kimchi either in the jars or you can pick your own from their deli bar. At least thats how it was the last time I was there.

Costco Kimchi is terrible.

T&T's kimchi is awesome. They have some brands straight from Korea.

Big time bump. Is there anywhere on the west side of Calgary in the Signal Hill area that sells this. The only places I've seen are either downtown or on the east side.

Thanks.

My sister in law gets it at Save on Foods. She has eaten plenty of kimchi in her life and she thinks that it's pretty good from there.

15 responses and not one mention of the 'Kimchi District'? For shame CP. You are losing your edge.

Pardon my ignorance, but where is the K-town district in Calgary? Is it around 17th and 37th SW by Westbrook Mall?

They're all in the same complex. It's the kimchi complex on third.

I've never had kimchi before but it sounds like something I'd like. Any good suggestions on a Korean restaurant with good kimchi in the S-SW?

Also sounds like an Asian version of many Eastern European dishes that are cabbage based. Not to say was adapted from, kimchi was probably around longer, just saying sounds similar to.

Speaking of restaurant recommendations, is The Clubhouse Korean Restaurant in Bowness any good? I've driven past there a number of times recently and it looks like a dive but I'd be willing to try it if the food is good.

yeah... the ones that are sold as whole/half cabbage, rather than the cut ones. it's easier and cheaper to cut the cabbage first, but the taste just isn't the same

restaurant kimchi isn't usually that great... but sura on 2320 4th st nw tends to have the best kimchi and homemade style side dishes, I've found.

It's hard to explain what it is. Kind of like a side condiment, like a pickle would be considered. You wouldn't really dine on just kimchi alone, unless you were really into it.

I bought some at Save-on. I had no idea what it was but have seen enough Top Chefs to know it is an ingredient I need when playing fine dinning chef at home.

Now that we all have our kimchi, what the fata do we do with it?

My mother used to give me raw potato and sprinkle salt on it before putting the rest in the pot to boil. I find the texture of the vegetable in kimchi most resembles raw potato. It has a unique spicy, pickled flavour to it. Like a better coleslaw with a way better spice and better texture.

Would you say that you had a good relationship with your mother?

I just discovered this place this evening! Hard to believe it's gone unnoticed for so long, as I live right by it.

Can't wait to check it out--was too late tonight.
