I was looking at the medal charts from the previous olympics and the rankings of each nations were according to the number of gold won by the nation.

How come this year, its the total count not the number of gold medal?
Is it just this year, or for future games as well?

the IOC and internationally they do golds

the americans do total medals, look at the 2008 summer games to see why

This is the first time Canada wants to join the rest of the IOC/Internationals in sorting it by Gold....

Everywhere else in the world except Canada and the USA rank it the proper way - most golds. Since the games are in Canada they're ranked Canada's way.

The IOC officially ranks the standings by number of gold won.

Well obviously because of our ratio of golds to total medals.

But if you actually think about it logically, why would you sort the standings in a way that basically says 1st = 3rd?

This should be the official rankings.

So when the Olympics is done, are the official ranking in number of gold? Or is it going to be in number of medals since it was held in Vancouver?
