Beef

Uncle Sirloin is good. Harvey's Angus is good too. Big Bacon Classic too. Big Mac is super classic, Whoppers are huge... DQ's Flamethrower is tasty as hell too...

What's your take?

I think as far as a pre-built burger, the Bacon Cheddar Uncle Sirloin is it for me. Honorable mention to the Angus from Harveys, and the Flamethrower.

Chicken

KFC's Spicey Big Crunch, DQ's Chicken Flamethrower, McDonald's McChicken, Chubby Chicken, Wendy's Spicey Chicken... all good choices. I like spicy chicken.

Spicey Big Crunch takes it for me. Man, those things are huge. So bad for you, but so friggin delicious. That sauce is absolutely delicious.

As for chicken, I had Mary Brown's for the first time yesterday and I was impressed. Very tasty and not very greasy.

Culver's Double Cheddar Butterburger...followed by a a Culver's frozen custard with caramel and brownie bits.

Of course Culver's aren't outside of the mid-west US yet so most on the board will have no idea what i'm talking about.

For Chicken sandwiches and strips it's easily Chick-Fil-A

Again most on the board will have no idea what I'm talking about. All I know is thanks to the likes of Culver's, Chick-Fil-A, Freddy's I'll never step into a McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King etc again.

I hardly ever eat fast food, but when I do, the Whopper is indeed the King :)

I'll actually be trying a Hardee's thickburger this weekend -- I'm a big fan of Carl's Jr. six-dollar burgers (are they really coming to Canada?) so I'm hoping they are pretty much the same. Also, In-n-out burgers are pretty good (also only in the US).

I did a search and it looks like Carl's Jr. expansion was announced in 2005 -- not sure if it's still on the radar. On Wikipedia, it says Hardee's expansion is being prevented by a trademark dispute by Harvey's. Nothing stopping them from making Carl's Jr though (although it might be better if they don't -- I'd get pretty fat too. If you look on their website, the nutritional information is mindboggling!).

Wendy's Bacon Junior Cheeseburger without a doubt

Why should I trust someone about taste who has an avatar of a kid eating a spider?

Anyway, when it comes to fast food burgers, for me, the Uncle Sirloin Burger from A&W is a clear winner these days. I don't eat burgers very often but when I do, that's what I have. Surprised it hasn't been mentioned (or at least I didn't see it) but my personal favourite is the Sour Dough Jack from Jack in the Box.

Close second for me is Double Fat Boy from Junior's in Winnipeg. (And before anybody begins the MJ jokes, for some reason every Greek burger place I know of calls their signature burger a Fat Boy. Actually, I'm not sure that makes it any better.)

Best I've ever had was a Wendy's Steakhouse burger- I think it was a special about 2 years ago. Imagine a Baconator, with sauteed mushrooms and all cooked in a Montreal Steak Spice kind of sauce.

Used to work at A&W way back in the day and while there, perfected the ultimate burger.

Grandpa Burger (3 patties) cooked with extra seasoning salt. On two of the patties put one slice of cheddar each. On the third patty, put mozza cheese. Add maybe 4-5 slices of bacon as well

On the bottom of the bun, put Ranch dressing. On the top of the bun, put Mayo.

No lettuce, tomatoes, onions or any other sauces.

Simply a beautiful burger, and we never paid for them either!

I ordered one a few years ago, and I think with all the extras it was about 12$.

I used to love the spicy baconator from Wendy's.

My current fave is the A&W Bacon Cheddar Uncle.

I don't really like Harvey's because they used pre-cooked. Or if they don't, they make it taste like that... boo.

Peter's Drive-in is a classic, but I don't think they are great, they are just tradition.

But my favorite place isn't a fast-food per se, it's Tommy Burger on Maclead by Schanks. Good food can be had there for the same price as FatBurger (another decent choice, really good, but not worth the money as much as Tommy).

Carl's Jr. is very tasty with huge portions as well. It helps that they also serve curly fries. The Sour Dough Jack at Jack in The Box is a great burger also.

I like Fat Burger. It is more expensive, but there isn't one on every corner either. I usually get the King burger with all the toppings including chili, fried egg, and bacon.

Surprised it hasn't been mentioned (or at least I didn't see it) but my personal favourite is the Sour Dough Jack from Jack in the Box.

That is my favorite burger ever!

2nd was the mushroom melt from Willie's off Macleod.

3rd is the whopper which i thought was disgusting when i was a kid.

Anyone that mentions McDonalds in this thread should be banned. Worst fast-food food in the world. It just boggles the mind how they stay in business. Must be all those toys and collectibles they give away.

A&W burgers are the 2nd worst. all that mustard and lack of vegetables can't compensate for the awesome rootbeer.

It's been almost five years, the topic just came up again in the Toronto is No Good Thread, it's almost lunch, and I am full on Burgin'. Best fast food burger in descending order:

Burger King, A&W, MacDonalds' hamburger-styled product, Wendy's, Jack-in-the-box.

Really surprised the DBLCHS from Dq is so overlooked. Typical BBQ burger done right.

I think we should all agree that to be considered a fast food burger, the establishment must have a drive thru, so 5 Guys cannot be considered.

With that in mind, in Calgary my ratings would be:

Burger King - Double whopper with cheese only
Harveys
A&W
Wendys
McDonalds

Nope, my definition is anywhere that I get my food immediately (or close to) after ordering it.

Subway is fast food. A drivethru does not, IMO, define "fast food", rather the speed at which the food is availible is more the measure.

I also like a Whopper now and again.

not fast food - good food served quickly

anywyas, i guess i see the market as typical places (McD's, A&W, Wendy's, BK etc), and then the cut above (Fatburger, South Street, 5 Guys etc).

i guess it stuns me how when i take the family (4 of us) to A&W the bill seems to be $35 - $40

A & W is definitely at the upper end of typical fast food pricing.

Maybe because it's a blue collar city that has more money than your average blue collar city? When I think of fast food customers I tend to think of more blue collar than suit and tie so I can understand why Edmonton would be more attractive than Calgary.

I went to the Ikea Five Guys yesterday and I swear they changed something, as their burgers were just not as good as they used to be. The fries were still great, but the burger felt a lot more like something you would get at a bigger fast food chain.

Agreed.

Plus you can determine what you want on your burger right then and there and see them make it. Anywhere else I need to say no mayo because most places put a whole jar on the damn burger. At Harvey's I can say "just a little mayo" and stop them if they start doing too much.

I don't understand the fascination with putting so much mayo/mustard/etc on burgers. It just becomes a bloody mess and you can't even taste the burger anymore after they have coated it with every condiment under the sun.

There is no doubt they have the worst excuse for meat patties of any fast food outlet. That's probably a reason they are a lot less of them at least out west as we know what good beef tastes like. Maybe some of you older people remember the days when your mom would take you to the Bay to shop for stuff and then lunch in their restaurant which served essentially basic cafeteria food. Well those crappy burger patties were still better than Harvey's.

Aren't they the same burger with different cheese?

Teen vs. Mozza?

Teen = Tomato, Lettuce, Onion, Pickle, Yellow Cheese, Bacon, Mayo, Ketchup, Mustard.

Mozza= Lettuce, Tomato, Mozza sauce (Glorified thousand island salad dressing), Mozza cheese (real surprisingly), Bacon.

Mozza's easily my favorite A&W burger. Close second is the Papa with Cheese minus the whole Onion they seem to pack into it.

Also an issue I have with the teen now, they used to use diced onion but when they brought back the family burgers they switched to ringed and the damned cooks always throw in a whole onion slice which is gross.

I didn't find Boardwalk to be that great. Maybe they changed things since last summer. It was just kind of "meh" for me. Five Guys is okay, but awfully greasy. I don't expect a burger to be healthy, but the greasiness is a turn off.

Personally I like Silver Sage at the Farmers Market. The Urban Bistro burger is delicious. My other go to is Boogies.' Love the Boog Mac, but the buns get soggy fast, so not really a good take out burger.

I don't know how you can find 5 guys greasy but Boogies not? They fry their buns. They make their burgers 1979 style and are proud of it. Nothing wrong with that although I wish I liked it as much as everyone else. Just find it meah, and very greasy. The chilli fries on the other hand are bomb. I'll give them that.

I judge the greasiness of a burger by how long I am still hacking up the grease that has coated my throat. Five Guys and Rocky's were easily the worst. Although, on reflection some of the new Jack in The Box offering were pretty bad (bad in a good way) with the butter-soaked buns or whatever they called them.

Still though, I didn't feel Boogies were overly greasy, just that wrapping the burgers up for any length of time pretty much resulted a soggy, almost liquified bottom half of the bun.

Haven't tried the chili fries. Boogies or Five Guys? I thought they only had spicy fries at Five Guys.

I used to live right behind Boogie's (literally the house behind it) and ate there a lot as a result. I found their burgers to be really messy and would usually fall apart halfway through. The only way I could keep it together was not ever putting the burger down until it was done. Kind of a hassle, but they were pretty tasty burgers. And their onion rings were fantastic.

Made it out to Naina's a couple weeks ago and their burgers were surprisingly not greasy at all. Very good burgers. The 30-45 minute wait kind of sucked, but can see why the place is swamped. Wasn't the best burger I have ever had, but definitely up there.

I had the Calgary Burger at O Burger in the Bow building. Really enjoyed it (patty, chili, fries, and cheese curds). I would probably put them in the same category as smash burger.

The Seoul (Korean topping) burger there is surprisingly good for downtown food court. Fries are meah, but the burger is good.

On the weekend I was able to try boardwalk burgers. Its on par with south street burgers. Not amazing but better than the big 4 burger places.

Remember a few months ago, it was said that Carl's Jr was going to be opening a Calgary location "near SAIT" sometime this summer?

Summer is soon going to be here, and there doesn't appear to be any construction going on anywhere near SAIT, either to build a new restaurant or convert an existing building.

Has anyone heard anything more about that?

I heard on 660 news a few weeks the design was complete. Still said this summer. No updates since as far as I know

I would agree that Boardwalk is on par with Southstreet. Except I think Southstreet is overpriced crap. Those are probably two of the most disappointing fast food burger places I've been to.

The plus for Southstreet is that they serve New York Fries, which IMo are some of the best fries you can buy.

I don't mind NY Fries but at the end of the day they are just fresh cut fries no different than say Five Guys fries.

Had myself some Shake Shack in Chicago last week - outstanding! One of the best burgers I've had, particularly from a chain.

Yep, I'm not much of a burger eater, but tried it last night, and it was damn good.

Just an FYI, if you're around there's a Burger cook-off happening in Bridgeland (outside of Main Dish) this afternoon. 4 different burgers...the one i had was quite awesome.

Is there a business in the NW corner of 14th and 16th? The old Flight Centre and Log Barn. That would be a decent location.

I think that's the office of Molly Maid or Mango Maid.
