It has been my pleasure to meet many people from the calgarypuck community. It is very satisfying to socialize and work with people that share a common passion - the Calgary Flames. I have spoken with many of you about expanding these relationships for our mutual benefit.

Many of us are professionals or business owners, actively seeking new clients, contacts and resources. I am sure many of you have attended various networking events in the past. I think a new networking group made up of calgarypuck members, would be an enjoyable and successful enterprise.

Some of us have talked about forming a networking club that meets one evening each month at a restaurant or pub (maybe the new Flames sports bar). We expect it would be less formal than other networking groups you may have attended.

The basic structure could be modified according to the needs of the members, but we submit that it work like this:

1) only one member from each industry group, ex. one accountant, one realtor etc (the first person to commit from an industry will be grandfathered in)
2) the goal is to help grow the business of members
3) each member will have a few minutes each meeting to talk about their business, and what is a good lead for them
4) the group may decide to give one member each month the chance to speak in more detail (20 minutes) on a rotating basis
5) exchange of leads at meetings, or between meetings
6) regular monthly meetings (except July and August)
7) there will be a social component too - perhaps meeting to watch a Flames game together

In my experience these groups can be very successful if the group is committed to working together. I think this group could be especially effective, as many of us already know each other, and we all share a common interest.

If you are interested, please post your reply to this thread, and identify your industry. Provide a description of your business, biography, or web-site link.

My name is Peter Robinson, and I am a lawyer practicing in the areas of real estate and estate planning.
www.nwcalgarylaw.com (http://www.nwcalgarylaw.com)

We hope this opportunity will be of interest to some of you. Please reply if you are interested, or share this invitation with other calgarypuck members that might be a good fit.

Thank you.

Great idea Peter, and I would be interested in joining this Networking Group as well.

My name is Trevor McNabb, I am a realtor with CIR Realtors Northeast Calgary. I've worked with a few members of CalgaryPuck and would love to help fellow flames fans grow their business as well.

I might be in for this as well. I have found some networking associations to be quite succesful in the past.

My name is Jamie Coulter and I work for Displayco Canada. We design and build all sizes of trade show exhibits. Anything from small tabletop displays to huge modular exhibits. We also have a full service graphics department and provide all the other services pertaining to trade shows.

I might be in too, though I already go to one monthly networking group.

My name is Jason Schwab and I'm a real estate investor. Though right now I'm as busy as I can be with personal stuff, eventually we want to branch out and start bringing in external investors.

My dad might also be interested, he is an independant contractor and can do all kinds of things, he does excellent quality work and is quite fast as well. He recently quit his job and did a house flip with me, and is now looking for contracts to do until we can get the next flip up and running (be three or 4 months).

I really like this idea, as myself and partners are looking for businesses to purchase. Our efforts right now are being placed on expanding our networks and meeting business owners. We want to find the right business to buy, and are open to looking at most companies.

I am in an Oil & Gas Engineer in Calgary, but would be interested in coming to these network meetings as a business investor looking for prospective companies and meeting people who have built or are part of successful companies.

Troutman, I'd be happy to help you organize anything if required. PM me if you need some help.

I'm interested in knowing more, I'm still connected into the high-technology sector in Alberta (on the ICT side, but know people in Energy and Life Sciences as well).

My name is Terry and I am an alcoho....errrr....I used to work in the Government but now work for iCORE www.icore.ca (We manage a provincial funding program to attract computer scientists etc. to Alberta)

Also, if people are interested in connecting into the high-technology investment community here in Alberta I can help make those connections as well.

There are some really good companies here, but not enough investors interested in plays outside of real estate and black goo.

I would like to be part of this. We just opened a sports memorabilia company in Calgary late last year. All framed items, we obtain most of our autographs directly from the agents. Right now, we primarily work with charities doing silent and live auctions, but we would like to focus more on retail sales in the next year as well.

OK, well I am a broadcaster that hosts a number of information programs on AM1060.

Where I could fit in, is by providing valuable exposure to businesses that are relevant to our programming. I've already had a couple of CP members guest on a couple of the shows, including Axel.

I do shows focused on Health, Real Estate, Financial Matters (primarily geared towards the resource sector), and a relatively new show called Help Wanted which is focused on HR issues from both the emlpoyer and employee perspective. This also provides a vehicle for Employers to come on the program to talk about job opportunities they have and benefits of working for that company.

KevanGuy

KG does it for chraities, not the Herald.

Yeah, we mostly just call for charities and 95% of the time it is to people who have given in the past.

We can do more then just that though. Right now we are doing some surveys in rural towns for a Recreational Assement firm. We can also do market research and customer cultivations (asking customers how the service of the company was, are they happy with the product, booking appointments, etc).

Flames Central is a unique North American venue and a modern day hybrid version of the interactive “sports bar” that will provide sports fans with an opportunity to enjoy the history of The Calgary Flames through original memorabilia, state of the art contemporary décor and cutting edge entertainment options. Flames Central will not only play host as a modern day sports viewing coliseum, but will also play host as a special event facility, conference center and concert hall.

Construction for this project continues, and the opening is slated for March 2007.

I can add a couple options to the mix. I am an independent contractor that works heavily in Microsoft Office development. Access and Excel data mining, reporting, you name it (and automation with Word/Outlook too for some funky abilities like e-mailing quotes as you are talking to clients). If you need help in developing, maintaining or even simple training in these programs, that is my current strength. Business analyst with a focus on designing what works well, and requires low maintenance.

Secondarily, as I run a slopitch league which has been hampered by astronomical DJ costs for events we have held lately, I am in the process of buying some slick equipment to be able to do it ourselves. So if you have an event where you want someone who know tunes that work for a variety of ages (20-50), I can help.

Excellent, excellent idea troutman. I know a lawyer at my firm has been doing this for years. He generates a ton of great contacts and stays abreast of what's going on out there.

I'd love to get in on the group but it seems that by adhering to the one person per industry rule, I can't participate without taking you out ;)

My name is Stephen Torscher and I'm just wrapping up my articles at Walsh Wilkins Creighton LLP (http://www.wwclawyers.com/). Our firm does a lot of aboriginal law (though that may not interest m/any of you). We also do a great deal of matrimonial law and real estate law as well. My particular areas of interest, though, seem to revolve around civil litigation and criminal law.

I would not mind another lawyer in the group, if we are practicing in different areas.

Looks like Flames Central will be open soon, so we can schedule a meeting in the near future.

Why don't we try to make it even a bit earlier like 5:30 or 6? Then people can just head down there right after work rather than having to wait until 7.

Well, I see there's already a realtor in here, but I'm going to throw my hat in anywas, as I focus on investment and commercial real estate. I'm also on the verge of a major land development deal. I am going to try to make it to FC tomorrow to meet you guys. There's just the small matter of a wedding rehearsal dinner I've got at 5pm.

If I can't make it to this meeting, I'll definitely find a way to make it to the next one and hopefully I'll have info on our land deal. It will be an RRSP eligible investment that I think will turn the cranks of anyone in the real estate investment business.

As for my personal practice, anyone that is interested in discussing investment real estate (residential), I am your pro. I have only 1 commercial deal under my belt (a 46 unit condo in Red Deer), but I work with my father and uncle, both of whom are long time commercial realtors and land developers.

Hope to be there tomorrow.

The first in a reduced cost basic IT audit, we come in and evaluate your organizations IT infrastructure and future growth plans and give no obligation advice on what you might want to do with your computers, servers, network structure and software in the future.

I talked about our mail spanker device which is a stand alone anti-spam appliance, we're offering a free 30 day evaluation to parties that are having trouble with thier incoming email and spam.

The website for the anti-spam appliance is www.infrontnetworks.com (http://www.infrontnetworks.com).

Small turn-out tonight, but I think FC is interested in booking us some space if we come every month (the place was quite empty tonight). We talked to a couple of the managers. Our waitress (Dana) should be a super-model.

Booking a suite is out of the question. $500 plus a minimum $1500 tab required.

Are we starting to early? Is it better to meet after the summer?

We think this will work very well, once we get a regular event happening.

Well last time we heard that it would be better to go earlier, so its a tough call. I would be fine with either the current 6:15pm or back to 7-7:30pm.

I think Slava and I have to crack the whip a little earlier each month to remind people of our meetings.

If FC will give us a regular spot, our meetings can be held at the same time and place every month. They seemed quite keen on doing something for us, but when our estimated 12-20 people turned into 3, we didn't seem quite so powerful.

I got my Visa statement today. Turns out not only did you guys already pay for drinks that I paid for but I got charged twice. Two charges appear on my statement. Same day, same price, same bar. To correct this problem:

1. Called visa. They were really nice but said it's best if I work it out with Dakota on our own.
2. Called Dakota. Manager Frank wouldn't acknowledge a mistake on their end. Thinks it was visa that messed up and suggested I call them. I said I did and they told me to call the bar. He said there was nothing he could do.
3. Called visa. They were really nice again. Said I should work it out with the bar. I said I called visa once, that's what they suggested. I called the bar but they wouldn't reverse the charge. Visa transferred me to their resolutions department.
4. A lady named Lucrezia answered and was very nice. She asked what the problem was and what steps I had taken to correct it. She told me that they would contact the business and make the necessary adjustments. A credit should appear on my account in 7-10 days.

Notwithstanding the cuteness of our waitress, we do not hold meetings there anymore. Dana @ FC was better looking and less dumb anyway.

I sent a message to Slava - if there are too few people for tonight, I suggest we postpone until September, when we can get a good turn-out.

hmmmm no pne told me about it, well besides you in your office.

A few of us got together last night for a brief discussion on how this group should proceed and we came to a few decisions:

1. The group will meet on the first Thursday of every month
2. The meetings will be held at 6:30pm
3. Every attendee will have 1-2 minutes to introduce themselves and what they do, and tell everyone what kind of clientele they are looking for.
4. The meeting location will rotate amongst the attendees; the host of the meeting will have 5-10 minutes to explain their business a little more in depth and answer some questions.
5. The "forma;" meeting will not take more than an hour; after that people can hang around and enjoy a beverage or two and meet everyone.
6. We will order in pizza or whatever the host arranges for dinner.

Overall, the point is not to have things too formal. We want this to be a good business builder for everyone involved, but not so incredibly structured that it is onerous to attend!

If people would PM me the following information, you will be put into the group for future meeting locations and information. WE WILL NO LONGER BE SENDING OUT PM's WITH THIS INFORMATION.

Please forward your: name, email address and business/position to me. If you have already noted that you would like to be included in this thread then you're position in the group is saved, but we still need this info. Of course, in the interests of all of the attendees, this is limited to one individual from each profession/business.

Just to tack on to Slava's comments, the idea we had was for the host to have the meeting at their office if possible. This would give the host the opportunity to "show off" their space and their services/product line more easily and would also provide a setting that would be easier to communicate in instead of trying to talk over normal bar noise.

If there are some who don't have appropriate space to hold the meeting at their location there are some of us who would be willing and able to offer up our space.

Sorry I missed the meeting last night. I'm so busy from all the business I generate from the calgarpuck networking group, I could not get away from the office!;)

The format Slava is proposing is a good one. I belong to a similar club, and it has worked well for all the members. The key is to consistently attend, and you will see the rewards.

My boardroom is available, but might be too small if more than 10 people attend.

You aren't the only one to think so, Johnny Tran is the name of the bad guy in the first Fast and the Furious movie.

Is there a list of people's professions for this?

I'd be interested, depending. I'm looking to start a (technical) business, and could use a few contacts.

I'm still in the process of R&D, I'm hoping to start selling my product come April for the Oil&Gas trade show.

Clearly the 11th is the first day we can meet in October (and while we're at it Nov 1 and 8 are also home games so we may have to pick the 7th).

Hopefully everyone has already sent Slava their contact info, if not, please do, so we can get a Google/Yahoo/whatever group setup soon to send out invites.

I should be good to host the first one unless The Captain would like to kick it off as originally planned. We're at 555 11th Ave SW and have the added advantage of a pizza place, a Macs, and a liquor store downstairs from us so we should be well stocked. Good central location and also parking shouldn't be too bad. I'll send specific directions once we've got a list together.

Cheers.

If we can get a time and place booked, we can start inviting people.

Yep, good call, I can still host.

There is a game on Thursday so Wednesday the 7th should work out best. 6 or 6:30 start time? I figured making it at 6 means less wait time between the end of the work day and the meeting, plus it means people are home earlier if they have rugrats to deal with.

Thought that I would add this in here. The organization that I'm with now sells a incredible HRIS/Payroll systems for medium sized organisations.

If you know of any companies that are struggling with their payroll solution (Ceridean or ADP for example), we do offer a 5% referal bonus, to individuals who refer us, and we get them to switch over.

This can be fairly lucrative as our software isn't like a $500.00 solution.

Just thought that I would throw it here and see if it sticks.
