Ruth was famous for the #3 he wore as a Yankee, but he wasn't wearing #3 that season. The Yankees were the first team to wear numbers on their backs but that started in 1929. He wore number 3 because he hit 3rd in the lineup. Thus Lou Gehrig wore #4 hitting behind him..
