seems like we have a few people here into heavier music, figured a thread to talk about new releases and maybe share new finds would be nice. i was planning to put single song samples of groups on a place like yousendit.com, but wasn't sure how the mods would like that so for now i'll just stick to official samples from the band sites. here are a few bands that i've recently gotten into

Dragonforce - Through The Fire And Flames (http://www.agjs34.hemscott.net/DragonForce-Through_the_Fire_and_Flames.mp3)

Power/Prog metal, clean sung vocals and VERY fast guitar work, this is the lead single from their new album Inhuman Rampage. fans of classic metal like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, or progressive acts like Dream Theater might want to check these guys out

Hammers of Misfortune - The Locust Years (http://www.cruzdelsurmusic.com/hom_tly_mp3/prev_homtly.htm)

link goes to a sample page for their latest album. they play an eccentric brand of metal that is very hard to describe, best being i guess is to take the classic folk melodies of Jethro Tull and Journey and mix them with a heavy Sabbath inspired sound with the oddball styling of Clutch thrown on top. deffinetly check out the song Trot Out The Dead, one of the best songs i've heard all year

Place of Skulls (http://www.myspace.com/placeofskullsdoom)

fans of true Black Sabbath inspired metal (i.e. Corrosion of Conformity) should defineitly check these guys out. the first song on thier myspace page Prisoner's Creed is the lead track from the new album The Black Is Never Far and is a great song to start with

Protest The Hero (http://www.purevolume.com/protestthehero)

fast, punk infused metal with a slight emo twist (it's not bad, i swear). think of a much heavier version of Coheed And Cambria. what impressed me the most about these guys is for a band of kids all in their teens, they're all insanely talented musicians. i'm very interested in seeing how they develop their sound in years to come

Protest The Hero is one of my favorite band right now - some very talented guys putting out very innovative music for the genre. I would highly recommend it for anyone who likes punk, hardcore, or metal.

For recommendations I'd have to suggest Edge of Sanity first and foremost. If you can find either Crimson or Crimson II (both are seperate albums) buy them immediately. Two albums of amazing metal (think In Flames/Dark Tranquillity) each containing one 40+ minute song. The original Crimson is one of the most ground-breaking metal albums of the 90's.

I've been listening to Kataklysm quite a bit recently. Solid metal with definite hardcore influences.

Trivium is another band I'd recommend - very similar to Shadow's Fall and to a lesser extent Killswitch Engage (both of which are great bands as well)

Had to get in on this one! Thanks for posting some bands guys - I am still listening to older stuff.

Meshuggah is my fave still! And I have been checking out Children of Bodom lately.

I used to play in a couple bands out at the coast here. One called Tractor and we used to share a jam room with Strapping as well as a couple of others like Jar ( later became Flybanger ) and Zimmers Hole. Some of you from here may have heard of them!

Anyway

To check out a couple samples of Tractor go to http://brutalmusic.com/Listen/Listen.htm

A couple of the guys are still working on stuff but there hasnt been much going on for a while I think.

Another one I was in for years was Random Damage - speaking of Annihilator - Ray Hartman (Annihilator drummer) was our drummer in Random Damage for a few years! The best drummer I have ever seen! The guy is a machine!

I have been out of the music for several years now as I have a family etc. but I got to say it was fun for a while and I got to get a couple cd's out there and probably played a couple hundred shows over the years!

Thanks guys .. dont forget to check the Tractor samples!

The first 3 albums Kalmah put out are very similar to COB's style. If you haven't checked them out, I reccomend you do!

Here are a couple of suggestions although I will admit that these are going to be 'tame' in comparison to some of the other stuff listed in this thread.

Soulbender

Led by Queensryche guitarist Michael Wilton, he got this project going to express his darker side. It's great. I've had the CD for a couple of years before they ever had a page on myspace. All of the songs are good IMHO, but check out the anti-intolerance anthem "Samsara". Supposedly a follow up album is due out sometime soon.

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=15304045

Sticking with the Queensryche side project theme I'll introduce you to Slave to the System. You may have actually heard them on the radio recently as they are finally starting to get some airplay three years after the CD was released. The band features Queensryche drummer Scott Rockenfield, former 'Ryche guitarist and producer extraordinaire Kelly Gray and Brother Cane (great underrated band) alums Roman Glick and Damon Johnson. There are 4 songs on their myspace page, good ones. There are at least 2 on the CD that are better than any of them IMHO. Of these 4 I'd reccomend Stigmata first.

http://www.myspace.com/slavettsystem

Finally, while it probably doesn't fall with in the genre of metal at this point, Eagles of Death Metal gets a huge thumbs up from me. Everything Josh Homme touches is freaking brilliant.

http://www.eaglesofdeathmetal.net/index.php?p=audvid

This link has various video versions of a few of their songs.

Of the stuff mentioned in this thread, I really dug A Place of Skulls. I would absolutely adore Opeth if they had no vocals. I simply can't stand the vocals. Outstanding music, but the vocals ruin it for me.

Same here. I kind of like them musically, but the vocals are so insane I can't handle it. The vocals in Opeth are the really low, growling type. Can't take it.

Saw a few more metal heads and thought I'd bump this thread.

Phaneuf3 posted in the music video thread about Cannibal Corpse. I liked their latest, Kill, but haven't really found anything great from their older material, then again, the sound quality is a big difference, so its hard to give things a full listen.

Kataklysm's In the Arms of Devastation is pretty impressive too - good Canadian band.

Dying Fetus - Grotesque Impalement is my favourite song of the moment.

Every once and a while a good ridiculously hard death metal phase is good! I normally listen to much softer metal, but my collection ranges from the entire spectrum that is metal.

Always loved Metal, but I my metal was from the 80's. Took a pretty big tangent into death metal and whatnot that I just wasn't into. That said, some of the granddaddy's of metal in my day had some awesome tunes.

I was going to post a link to Judas Priest's "The Green Manalishi" but found it was removed due to "copyright infringement". Strangely enough, I found a Fleetwood Mac version of it! Didn't know they did the original (or did they?) Pretty heavy for Fleetwood Mac in those days. Like the Priest version way better, but it was interesting to see this one.

I'm gonna go wayyy back (and show my age) and name-drop some bands that should be checked into:

Anvil (were just slightly ahead of their time in the Thrash realm as it coulda been them instead of Metallica leading the charge... oh and Canadian!)
Celtic Frost (no further info required)
Sacrifice (fantastic Canadian Thrash band)
D.B.C. (another fantastic Canadian Thrash band that kinda went a bit Voivod-ish)
Coroner (amazing prog-ish Metal band)
Anacrusis (ubber under-appreciated tech-Thrash band)
Tank (NWOBHM - go git some)
Atheist (prog-death at some of its finest)
Carcass (Heartwork is the pinnacle of Death with some melody)
Kreator (zee Germanz are coming!!!)
Sodom (zee Germanz are coming part II!!!)
Death Angel (ubber-fantastic Thrash band with a lot of other influences thrown in like some funkiness)
the smalls (Alberta band... gawd I mess 'em. check out any of their discs although the 1st two are very much underprodced)

I could go on and on... my passion for Metal (and music in general is crazy... just ask my wife about my CD collection).

And just to f___ things up go listen to Dwight Yoakam's Gone album (Dwight is right up there after Cash for me).

Oh and on a somewhat related note, use these guys (www.theendrecords.com) when (http://www.theendrecords.com) when) buying yer Metal as they carry some amazing shlte and they have cheap S&H as well... and on the low-low they also declare package value low so you can avoid duty.

Avoid rapists like HMV, Futureshop, etc. like the plague... unless of course they have 2 fer type sales.

ps - go grab the new Melvins - (A) Senile Animal

I've always been a huge fan of Metal, as anybody who's ever seen me drivin' around in the Metallitruck would know. I've been into all the metal sub-genres at one time or another but most enjoy the more coherent bands over the screech and hollar death metal. Some of my suggestions:

Rhapsody - Dawn of Victory (http://members.shaw.ca/wicca/Rhapsody%20-%20Dawn%20Of%20Victory.mp3) from Dawn of Victory

DragonForce has a similar sound to Rhapsody. Each Rhapsody album tells a continuing fantastic tale about the heroes and evils that battle in the land of Ansalon. They blend rapid guitars and powerful vocals with epic orchestration and choral performances.

Dimmu Borgir - Puritania (http://members.shaw.ca/wicca/Dimmu%20Borgir%20-%20Puritania.mp3) from Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia

One of my favorite black metal bands. Dimmu Borgir has a thick, heavy sound that is often juxtaposed with seemingly out of place instruments like chimes and music boxes to give them an eerie twist. The vocals stretch from deep and gravelly, to electronically distroted to clear and beautiful, similar to Burton C. Bell of Fear Factory.

Demons & Wizards - Heaven Denies (http://members.shaw.ca/wicca/Heaven%20Denies.mp3) from Demons & Wizards

This band is a joint side project from members of Iced Earth and Blind Guardian, two bands which are both definatly worth checking out on their own. Fast drums and guitars. I just love this band and can't hype them enough.

Symphony X - Dressed To Kill (http://members.shaw.ca/wicca/Symphony%20X%20-%20Dressed%20to%20Kill.mp3) from The Damnation Game

Great band with plenty of albums to choose from. As the name implies, they blend a symphonic sound with traditional metal.

And on the funnier side of metal, here's a classic from Macabre called Vampire of Dussledorf. (http://members.shaw.ca/wicca/macabre%20-%20vampire%20of%20dusseldorf.mp3)

friend of mine in BC had his own website selling the rare and harder edge of metal, he's scaled it back to just his ebay store right now:

he's got a lot of wierd stuff, rare box sets, he's first in line for the collectibles, hangs out with these dudes - plays xbox live with fear factory's drummer all the time!

so if anyone wants anything rare, collectible, strange, drop him a line.

EDIT: he specializes in european stuff, finnish, scandinavian, german, austrian, etc.

Mastadon is pretty much going to take the throne that Slayer sits upon out from under them. I have seen them 5-6 times in the last couple years, they seem to love playing Austin, Tx. always drop off the Slayer tour to do a one off in Austin. They are amazing, there newest album is good, but the album Leviathan is easily one of the best metal albums ever. They signed a deal with Warner Bros. for 4 mil. unheard of for a metal act that will never see mainstream success, because Warner Bros. knows they will have a Slayer like following their whole career.

Converge, High on Fire (Matt Pike from Sleep's other band), Crowpath, Kylesa (crusty metal ex members of the band Damad), Rwake, Daughters, Red Sparrowes (members of Isis and Neurosis), Isis, Burnt by the Sun (Dave Witte is the best drummer in the world), Today is the Day, The Red Chord, Phobia (grind gods), Mare...

I listen to Hard Attack on Sirius Sattelite Radio all the time. I have heard some awsome tunes from Bands that I didn't know existed recently like Carcus, and Celtic Frost. My favorite show on Hard Attack is Beyond the Pit, which plays 1 hour of Death Metal every night at 9pm Mountain.

Normally I listen to bands like Six Feet Under, Slayer, Hate Breed, Cannibal Corpse, Pantera, Soul Fly, Mushroom Head. The heavier the better.

err... umm.. sorry....

Anyways... I have always preferred the 80's metal... Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Megadeth.... etc...

of new bands... i like Dragonforce quite a bit as it is a drawback to the "classics"..

Death metal has never really been my thing.... i like to hear what the band is saying to go along with the slashing guitars... i always joke that they are probably screaming about petting kittens and frolicking through meadows... that is probably what i would do anyways...

I could care less what they are saying. As long as it sounds deep and evil. My 7 year old daughter loves Six Feet Under. Allthough I can only play certain songs because you can understand when they say the F word. When we get in the truck she allways tells me to put in "Deep voice" music.

I love a lot of the old metal stuff as well. Metallica is god. But I listen to Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, stuff like that.

Strapping Young Lad and Opeth are two of my favorite for heavier music. Arch Enemy is also good. Not a huge Cradle of Filth fan.

Devin Townsend Project is amazing, but maybe not HEAVY (heavy) METAL.

With a lot of bands stradling genres right now, it's hard to clearly define a lot of bands.

Ayreon also amazing but definitely not heavy metal.

If thou are interested in local bands I would suggest you try out:

Mark of Cain:

And for softer/post metal (Tool/APC styles) check out:

Ahnabith Gish:
http://www.ahnabithgish.com/
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=18220801

The myspace pages have better song samples. Junix for Ahnabith, and most of the samples for MoC have been remastered and in some circumstances, completely recorded in our very own TPM studios. Enjoy! Also if you like what you here, these bands can use your supports, often playing shows at Vern's, The Underground, etc.

We'll be starting our first full length album and label contracts with one of the above mentioned bands very soon. Recently we have just been helping bands with EP's.

Not sure they are new. The singer is new it seems but they put an album out in 2001 with a male singer.

Another female vocalist you will not believe is female from just listening fronts Arch Enemy. A band started by the ex-Carcass guitarist Michael Arnott and his brother. Replaced their first vocalist with Angela Gassow in 2001...and they are better for it.

a lot of death/doom/black bands have really decipherable lyrics - some singers just take a bit of getting used to their style. angela (arch enemy) i find to be one of the easiest to understand. but that's just me, everyone's ear is different.

I agree. Sabbath rules them all.

That being said, alot of good bands listed here. Going back to the first post, Place Of Skulls is a really good band. Melvins, yeah, how can anyone not like the Melvins?

Others listed like Ayreon, Devin Townsend, Maiden all deserve a buy.

Some others that are really good..Black Label Society - Zakk Wyldes band.

Buckethead - though not catergorically metal, hard music with a twisted bent.

Some stoner bands like Electric Wizard, Fu Manchu,Saint Vitus, Masters Of Reality and the grandaddy of them all Kyuss, should be picked up if you are into Sabbath.

Or go old school with Suicidal Tendencies.

The new Melvins album (Senile Animal) is great. If you like Melvins, Boris might also be worth checking out. Since we're talking aboot stoner rock may I recomend some bands. Dozer is one of my favourite bands right now, I highly recomend them. If you like fuzzed out guitars then you should check out Truckfighters. Atomic Bitchwax is another good band. We need a stoner rock thread. :D

Great find Hemi Cuda, that singer has an amazing voice. Thumbs up.

One great band with a great female vocalist (Liv Kristine - ex Theatre of Tragedy) is Leave's Eyes. Definitely worth checking out.

Some other (all female lead singer):

Ashes You Leave
Edenbridge (soft, but the girl can sing - kind of like Nightwish)
The Gathering (a classic, on of the best bands IMO)

seems like we have a few people here into heavier music, figured a thread to talk about new releases and maybe share new finds would be nice. i was planning to put single song samples of groups on a place like yousendit.com, but wasn't sure how the mods would like that so for now i'll just stick to official samples from the band sites. here are a few bands that i've recently gotten into

I love the song "My Spirit Will Go On"...the solo is awesome! I think it's on the other album though, the one called "Sonic Firestorm". It's definately worth listening to. I dont listen to metal much, but this song rules!

You know what? I'm a little disappointed in Metal. It's too cerebral these days. It's either a pumped up, harder version of prog rock, or just angry screaming, or gothic octaves.

Part of me wants...the glam back in metal. Where are the 80s tribute bands? Where's the synthesizers and metal power ballads? Where's the cheese and melodrama element?

Funny how things got to nightwish just when i was abouty to recommend one of the greatest finnish band ever. Tarot. Marco Hietala who is their singer is also Nightwish's bassist nowadays. He was also considered in iron maiden after bruce. it is being said that he made to the top 3

Wings of darkness (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_qsBD9b-Cw)

Also from finland comes the highly touted Insomnium. I don't like that kind of music where the singer just growls something. But since one of my friends cousin plays drums in that band i have to mention that.

ANd of course there is Children of bodom, HIM, apocalyptica and so on but i assume you know all those bands from Finland.

And if tyou want to learn finnish, here is a comical Manowar clone:

Teräsbetoni - taivas lyö tulta (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZqpwVZqQFg)

A hard rock band from my home town, one of the biggest bands in Finland:
The video is actually fimed in my home town and it describes the usual way we spend our weekends, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND WATCHING THIS....

Kotiteollisuus - Rakastaa, ei rakasta (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsIhgtqvnEo)

And one more, the best finnish band in my opinion, also in finnish, also from Lappeenranta:

This is heavy....

Finntroll - Trollhammaren

Finntroll is a folk metal band from Finland. They combine black metal and Finnish polka, called humppa. Although it is a Finnish band, Finntroll's lyrics are in Swedish, because Swedish just sounds "damn trollish"

Spinefarm Records has set a March 28 Finnish release date for the fifth album from FINNTROLL, entitled "Ur Jordens Djup" ("From the Depths of the Earth"). The CD, which was recorded by Nino Laurenne at Sonic Pump studios in Helsinki, will be the group's first release with new vocalist Mathias Lillmåns (a.k.a. Vreth; TWILIGHT MOON) following the departure of Tapio Wilska (SETHIAN, ex-WIZZARD, former session vocalist for NIGHTWISH) last spring. Lillmåns is reportedly 24 years old, and like FINNTROLL's original vocalist, Katla Mathias, is Fenno-Swedish, with Swedish as his mother tongue.

"Ur Jordens Djup" track listing:

01. Gryning
02. Sång
03. Korpens Saga
04. Nedgång
05. Ur Djupet
06. Slagbröder
07. En Mäktig Här
08. Ormhäxan
09. Maktens Spira
10. Under Två Runor
11. Kvällning

A video clip of FINNTROLL performing one of the new songs last August at the Wacken Open Air festival in Wacken, Germany has been posted online at YouTube.com (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkqRDcPQDcg).

FINNTROLL parted ways with Wilska in January 2006 after "reach[ing] a situation in which we [found] it impossible to continue FINNTROLL" with their previous vocalist, according to a statement issued by the group a short time after the split.

I'm not much of a metal fan, but I recently got to listen to Leviathan, and it instantly became one of my new favorite albums. It actually reminds me of the early Rush that I listened to as a kid (2112 era), with the literary-referenced concept album, a very high level of technical proficiency, great instrumental interludes, and shifting time signatures (though of course Mastodon has better vocals). There are probably far better comparisons for the band for those who follow the genre, but anyway, it's a great album.

It's definitely one of their best albums.

After being recommended by some friends for a few years ago, I finally changed my opinion of Lamb of God and I quite like their music now.

Same thing went for Opeth, I didn't like them for years and then suddenly it just clicked.

Bumping to say that several albums have been leaked online early, like:

Megadeth -
- Leaked about a week ago I believe. I was really disappointed with this, and wasn't very pleased with any of the tracks.

Behemoth - The Apostasy
- Very good. Most similar to Demigod.

Devin Townsend - Ziltoid the Omniscient
- I really enjoyed this. It seems like Devin's solo work is always great (and considering how he's quit the DTB and SYL, it's not necessarily a bad thing). It's not to be taken seriously, and it quite a funny concept (perhaps just the idea that anybody would base an entire album concept around this).

Siruis has been playing these guys quite a bit and i'm hooked. i don't think any of these guys are older than 20 yet they're bringing back the classic metal sound better than most bands who try who are in their 30's. their debut album comes out on March 18, but it's out online for those who know where to look. i'm grabbing it as i type this, and i've already pre-ordered on Amazon ($10, can't go wrong). can't wait

I can't believe we're six pages into a thread full of Devin Townsend, Children of Bodom, Lamb of God, and DragonForce references and there hasn't been one mention of

SOILWORK

I have their whole catalogue, and 2007's "Sworn to a Great Divide" is the best thing since Natural Born Chaos (the most perfect black-metal album ever, imo. Any track on that album could have been the title track. What an epic!).

Sworn to a Great Divide is NOT like Stabbing the Drama. Stabbing the Drama was like a celebration of all their different sounds from the first album through Figure Number Five. Sworn to a Great Divide is them kicking everything up a notch.

Incidentally, Devin produced all the vocals with Strid in Van while the rest of the band was in Sweden recording and then sending mp3s.

I agree with you that Natural Born Chaos is a good listen, however I would be hesitant to place Soilwork in the black metal genre.
A buddy of mine is a huge Soilwork fan and he loves the new cd as well.

James Malone seems excited about it, so hopefully it turns out well.

And yes, A Celebration of Guilt is their best (and one of my all time favourites).

The new track put up on their myspace page sounds pretty good, however it'll take one hell of a solid album to top Celebration of Guilt. One can hope... ;)

yea, I'm digging this song as well. Old school thrash sounding stuff is definitely way better (imo) than the whole commercialized growling thing. Kinda outgrew that about 15 years ago. Not to say it isn't good stuff, just that I'm old and can't take it for too long anymore :) I can only listen to Hard Attack for 15 or 20 minutes before I have to go back to Octane. Sad thing is I used to listen to stuff like Slayer, Kreator, Voivod etc for hours on end. Guess that old saying is true; If it's too loud (or growly) you're too old!

(man, to be 20 and have the world by the balls again :( )

well then I guess I'm out of touch. In the old days metal was just anything hard. Then all of a sudden it became the big thing to have to classify everything in it's own sub category, something I've never cared for or done. To me anything based on fast, heavy guitar riffs is metal. Now all of a sudden it's only metal if it's incomprehensible growling/screaming. Apparently because I still like melody and technique over playing the same power chord as fast as you can over and over it means I have no taste in music. I still listen to the harder stuff as I said earlier, but the growling over top of the music really turns me off now. If most of these bands were instrumental bands I'd absolutely love them.
Guess I'm just a dinosaur

Well thats not what I said.

First off, there are plenty of metal bands with melody, so thats a weird statement.

I didn't say you had no taste in music... so theres no need to put words in my mouth. Nor did I say that metal = incomprehensible growling/screaming.

Atreyu and Avenged Sevenfold are just not considered metal.

Metalcore is basically the 'emo' equivalent of metal. That being said, there are some metalcore bands which are still considered 'metal', but those two specific bands aren't.

I'm not insulting them, or you, I'm just stating the general consensus.

And I agree, categorization is rather strange at times.

yea, I'm not trying to cause any big argument or anything, just stating that I've never gotten the whole sub class thing. I don't understand the need to do that, and I also don't understand why everything nowadays seems to be about "I'm better than you because I listen to this, I drive that, I eat this" etc. The whole 'real' metal thing is exactly like the 'real' Flames fan debate. Pointless, really, and pretty much just comes down to semantics. A lot of the times the distinction between these sub classes is so minimal it's really hard to draw a line and say one band is always this type of metal, and another band is always this other type. The lines get blurry at times, at least for me. For example, Dragonforce has been mentioned several times in this thread, and honestly I see no distinction between them and Avenged.
Essentially we're all pretty much fans of the same type of music, guess it just comes down to your preference, what appeals to you.
I just honestly don't make any distinction, even though I do see the differences obviously, but to me it's just all one big happy family :)

Sorry, wasn't really directing that at you per se, but like you said, metalcore (whatever the hell that is, I took it to mean the more melodically driven type music, as opposed to the beat-you-over-the-head riffing type) is 'frowned upon', in other words in a lot of people's eyes sucks compared to whatever they listen to.

This one I just found funny, because on the one hand it isn't metal, yet it has the word metal right in the category title ;)

Like I said, I just really make no distinction, and will listen to all of it depending on my mood. It just happens that more often than not I end up listening to the A7X and Atreyu type.

they seem like they might be on the verge of breaking out big. when i first heard some samples of their first album, The Strength / The Sound / The Songs, they were nowhere online. i had to order the album overseas through amazon.co.uk, paid quite a bit for it to. but their 2nd album i bought through amazon.ca, there are some very well seeded torrents out for them now, their youtube videos are climbing rapidly in views and i'm hearing their name mentioned more and more

they're already pretty popular in Europe, but i think Volbeat could be huge in north america if they got the proper exposure

well over half their fan base was lonely metal heads that just bought their dvd/went to their concert to rub one out to tarja.

the rest of the band could re-invent themselves and be popular but it won't be nightwish. tarja = nightwish.

Hmm, I'm not sure if your message even deserves to be noted, but...

I'd just like to point out that their newest ( = post-Tarja) album is also their best selling album by a good margin. So I guess that makes you wrong.

Also, Tuomas Holopainen = Nightwish.

Anyone who actually knows something about the band would know this. (For example me, and I'm hardly a fan. I don't even listen to metal much.)

i've been waiting for their new album WAY too long, and with it being their first new material in almost a decade it's no exaggeration. this is from a handful of songs from the album that have found their way online (there's a torrent floating around with high quality rips of 8 tracks), and after listening to them all Formation of Damnation sounds like an early candidate for album of the year. they pick up right where The Gathering left off and don't sound like they've missed a beat in 9 years

A real respect for the Pentagram and Sabbath days of rock and roll. I like to throw 'em on when I'm in a bit more of a mellow yet rawkin' mood. Quality.

www.myspace.com/polkadotcadaver (http://www.myspace.com/polkadotcadaver) has some good samples. Definitely worth checking out. I was bummed when I heard DFD was calling it a day. No one does that classic Faith No More vibe while expanding on it like DFD did.

Going back to the mini-thread about Dax Riggs - I received his latest solo disc in the mail a few weeks back and hot damn is it a good one. Check out his myspace as well for some killer samples.

Someone also mentioned the new Testament. It's slowly growing on me for sure. I have a huge soft spot for Testament as well as Death Angel as they were 2 of my faves growing up that didn't receive enough recognition behind the Big 4 (Metallica, Slayer, 'Thrax and Megadeth).

On the new tip, I'm really digging the latest Genghis Tron. This was a band I'd always heard of but never checked out until recently. I'm not sure how I would describe them other than some sort of frankenstein offspring of Dillinger Escape Plan, Converge, Daft Punk, Zombi and Horse the Band. Weird, but good stuff.

On a final note, I'm not sure about any others out there, but I have WAY too much music (not that it's necessarily a bad thing). The downside is I can't listen to it all. And, the iPod doesn't help at all cuz I forget about certain discs when they aren't sitting in front of me. I think I have somewhere around 2000 CDs as well as various albums I've downloaded and are in line to be purchased whenever feasibly possible. Anyone else in that same boat?

Yeah, they definitely have a very real Pentagram feel to them.

Definitely a strange band. I had avoided them for a while before I finally checked out their latest. It's quite interesting though.

Definitely my case. I've been continuously upgrading my iPod in order to store my music. I'm at the 160 GB model, and currently have a good 10 GB of music still to go through, and a ever-growing list of about 200 bands to still check out.

I know it's not Metal, however they are my all-time favourite band: King's X. I came across their latest release (not coming out until May) on a blogspot and it's been stuck on play for the last 2 days. Their best disc since 1996's Ear Candy - not that anything past that was bad, just not all-around as good as this. Anyway, I do know there are some fellow KX-fans on this board. Go buy 2 or 3 copies when this sumb1tch comes out as it's #1 with a bullet as fave of the year so far (and there has been a fair bit that I like this year).

King's X are also one of my favs. Jerry Gaskill has one of the most underrated, deepest grooves in rock. Good to see these boys are not slowing down, can't wait for the new album.

I love these guys! I've had the opportunity to seem them twice. Last time was a couple of years ago in Edmonton (Ogre Tones tour), in some 'nothing' bar - there weren't even two hundred people there, and they rocked liked they were playing to a sold out arena! It was unbelievable!

I agree with Shnabdabber, Gaskill is killer . . .and when they 'go off' live and jast jam it out, it's unreal - one of the tightest live bands I've ever seen.

Definitely looking forward to the new stuff!

I know this isn't "directly" related to this thread but since I saw the song mentioned in the first post.....

I FINALLY BEAT THROUGH THE FIRE AND FLAMES ON EXPERT!! 94% baby . God I hate that song, not because of the "song" because of the mental anguish it has caused me the last month trying to beat it. I can now destroy my copy of frikkin GH3. Anyone who hasn't seen the ludricrous difficulty of this song watch this, its insane.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0dh0aix4mM&feature=related

On a more positive note, Just downloaded the album "screaming for vengeance" for rock band. One of my favorite albums and bands of all time. Higly recommend it if you own the game. The guitar portion of it is closer to Guitar hero difficulty on expert, unlike most of the preloaded songs on Rock Band which I find are closer to the hard setting on GH when you play them on expert. I think too many people were bashing Rock Bands Guitar portions for being way too easy as most people could beat the game on solo career mode on the first pass on expert, as long as they had any sort of expert experience in GH. Its nice to see they are upping the anti a bit.

Yeah, I came across a leaked copy of the new album a few weeks back. While I haven't listened to it a ton, I do think it is great. It feels like one of those albums that you need to immerse yourself into about 23 times before it really clicks and becomes one of those all-time type of faves. A much stronger nod to their 70's prog influences (such as Camel, etc.) in this one. To say the least I am really impressed with Mikael and his songwriting abilities.

On a similar yet different note - everyone should go listen to Priest's - Sad Wings of Destiny. Fan-damn-tastic.

I would categorize iced earth like blind gaurdian
(which you see an incredible amount of influence in Dragonforce)
But iced earth sounds more of a mix with Iron Maiden too, and they actually have ligit lyrics and all their songs dont sound the same.

So they are much better than Dragonforce
Also their best album is a Glorious Burden

Iced Earth is one of the best power metal bands out there. The fact that they have had such a die hard fanbase for so long says alot for them, especially since alot of power metal bands come and go. Or so it seems.

However, I have to disagree with you...

Something Wicked Comes This Way is their best album. ;)

the only song i was disappointed not to hear was Planet Hell, they've played it on other shows on this tour, though Marco did say they switched the lineup a bit and after getting to hear Last Of The Wilds i got over it pretty quickly. i'm completely over Tarja now, hell i preferred hearing Anette singing the older stuff. seeing her bounce around with so much energy and working the crowd is a huge improvement to Tarja just standing there stoically

I know this isn't really metal, but last night I saw Los Crudos. It's their first show in ~12 some odd years and their last show ever according to them. As a band who was probably the epitome of DIY hardcore and who shaped much of my world view, they didn't disappoint. Might be the best show i've seen in ages and definitely rates in my top 10 ever.

I figured I'd revive this old thread as it needed a good kick (like a dead horse). I wanted to give props to a criminally underrated band, BigElf. I know that Anthony was going off about a great band in Witchcraft (and rightfully so). BigElf is along the same lines as Witchcraft and possibly better (up to the ears of the beholder) due to the serious melody and trippy-ness they inject into their music. Fans of 70's hard rock should definitely check 'em out. These guys "should" be huge.

Also, Iced Earth isn't Power Metal, they are too different and good to be Power Metal. Power Metal is Kai Hanson (Helloween and Gamma Ray) and Stratovarius and bands like those. I can't classify them, but I would not say they are Power Metal.

Don't want to search 11 pages, but some suggestions of bands I love:

Ensiferum - Technically "Folk Death Metal" I believe, same lead singer as Wintersun.

For anyone who likes Children of Bodom - Norther. I'll take them over CoB every day and twice on Sunday.

Of course Bloodbath - alleged "supergroup", again, just plain awesomeness.

Threat Signal - technically more of a Metalcore band, but just great. (Canadian to boot)

Heaven Shall Burn - Great German Death Metal band. One of my most listened groups. Love their cover of "Black Tears".

Finally, Noumena. Kind of tough to find their stuff, but "Misanthropolis" is one of my favourite songs.

Ugh, Sorry but I can't stand Toxic Holocaust. He has one drum beat, and really lacks any sort of song writing ability. I'd much rather stick with something like NIFELHEIM.

If you want some new thrash, check out RAVAGED. The album GET F***ING SLAUGHTERED is an amazing death/thrash hybrid, very crushing.

Of course, I'm still a fan of the older stuff. I love my MEKONG DELTA, BIFROST, DESTROYER 666, HYPNOSIA, HOLY TERROR and ARTILLERY.

The Day That Never Comes was released on the Metallica website as well as as YouTube. Pretty decent song I think, at times has pieces of almost all their albums. Have a listen.

wow, that new Grand Magus stuff sounds awesome. i liked their previous album Wolf's Return but it was a little too slow in parts for me. this new album sounds like they kicked things up a notch

oh and for those Grand Magus fans who really like JB's vocals like me, check out his other band Spiritual Beggars (http://www.myspace.com/spiritualbeggars). awesome hard rock, something to drink whiskey to

I am absolutely hooked on the new Metallica. Maybe it's just because I've been starved for Metallica for quite awhile, but this is an awesome tune!

i'm not sure if this is it because i haven't listened to much of any of In Flames later stuff, but that tune sounds a lot like the opening of Cloud Connected (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJP5MqniJZo&feature=related)

It sounds similar to the song "Jotun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqRfBnauLE0)" and "Gyroscope (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpWBzzgmITE)" by In Flames to me, could be another song too...they are definitely ripping off In Flames.

Yeah, those are pretty close. Maybe i'm just imagining things, but i could almost guarantee that' a direct rip off from an in flames song.

Yeah, I bought it a while back. I usually hate live albums, but that one is amazing. Definitely worth picking up. DVD is identical to the cd, it's the concert video.

Like Fire has to be my favourite song on there.

For those that don't know... the new Metallica album has fully leaked in 320 kbps glory.

It's really good in my opinion. The snare stands out way too much in my opinion, but its still a great album.

And this is coming from somebody who really liked their first 4 albums, but wasn't too pleased with their last 4.

Rumor has it a shop in France started selling the album already, it's not supposed to be out until Sept. 12th. Wonder if they'll find themselves with a lawsuit from Lars?

really? i've heard a few tracks being played on Hard Attack on Siruis and wasn't at all impressed. sounded too much like that st. anger garbage for my liking, no real flow or memorable riffs to the songs

i did like the Black album and would have easily accepted if they had returned to that style, but they seem intent on trying to reinvent themselves with every new album now

I've also given the new Metallica album a listen, and it is nothing like St. Anger, aside from still just a bit too much snare drum. This album is seriously kick ass, and you can shades of all of their albums on it, especially the first four. There are some really heavy riffs, Kirk's solos are back, and Lars sounds like a maniac on drums.

It's a good album, I highly suggest listening to a few more songs before you chalk it up to another St. Anger.

I assume the Saddledome can accomodate this?

Were the last 3 shows you saw in the Saddledome? If so, we can probably assume it will be the same. Big huge stage in the middle!

I asked for the exact same reason as you, but Ive gone to concerts in the past where you could sit behind the stage (which would suck).

It will be. They confirmed it in the tour details when they released pre-sale info on Metclub.com.

"9: Even more good news - ticket prices have not changed in FOUR years! Yep - it's 2004 again and floor tickets will be $75 and reserved will be $55. Of course there will be additional building fees, ticketing fees, etc., but you get the idea. The stage will be "in the round"!"

I'm sure most know but in case you didn't Death Magnetic was leaked a few days ago. You can find it on any torrent site....and get this Lars is O.K. with it being leaked! Which of course must mean they make most of their money touring.

I really really really wanted to hate it, but unfortunately it is a great album IMHO. Justice and the Black album put in a blender (mostly Justice) with a couple of minor Load/Re-load touches. Rick Rubin does it again!

Or he's just realized that with the way the Internet is nothing can be done to prevent things like this from happening. He's just happy it was leaked a week and a half before release instead of months.
