There are so many good pizza places, but Trio Pizza on Mcleod Trail is pretty good, as is Toms if you like thin crust..

For thick-crust, I was a big devotee of Tino's on Centre-street north, but they recently closed down, and I haven't found a delivery place to fill the void yet.

For thin crust, I really like Gondola.

If you want a pizza with 2" of toppings and weighs 10 pounds, Vern's pizza is quite good.

My sister has a place called Emilio's out in Chestemere and they have some of the best pizza I've tasted, they were in the top list at that Sun Pizza Party.

Spiro's Pizza on 17 Ave SW used to be the best in town. I haven't been there in ages now that I live way up north.

Used to love Tino's on Center Street, wasn't aware they'd shut down. :(

Karouzo’s on 4th Street NW is one of the places for good pizza that nobody seems to know about. But it's been there for 30+ years.

Stromboli's in Kensington was also great, but it's gone downhill since the original founder left some time ago.

BTW, franchises like BP, Pizza Hut, Domino's shouldn't be part of this conversation. It's fast food pizza. It's like comparing McDonalds or Burger King with a gourmet burger. http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/html/emoticons/yucky.gif

Oakridge Pizza on 90th Ave SW was my fave growing up. The cheese was baked over the toppings.

For franchise pizza I prefer Papa Johns. I like the dipping sauces that PanaGo provides.

I agree. Stromboli's used to be the best in the city. Until the owner decided to go back to italy for good, and took his mother with him. Used to be a good family friend of hours. Did you know most of his ingredients came from italy when he went there each summer?

I have the recipe for the wonderul dough/crust that his mother used to make if anyone wants it.

I used to like Stomboli, however I went with some friends before a 7:00 flames game. Arrived just before 5:30.

The waiter/kitchen lost our order, the waiter did not come to update us as to what was happening. We did tell him that we were going to the Flames game. They gave us a minimal discount off the food and we missed the first period.

I will never give them the business.

At least Papa's uses real cheese (I think). Most places use some kind of petroleum product cheese substitute.

The Panago BBQ sauce is just your everyday Kraft Hickory BBQ sauce mixed with pizza sauce 50/50. The tropical sauce is Kraft sweet and sour, and pizza sauce 50/50 . So if you want to make your own, there ya go.

My dads cousin was the owner of Tino's restaurant on center Street. It closed down because the lease expired, and Lina (owner of Lina's Italian market, and the whole strip mall) had other intentions with the place. It is gonna become a restaurant again now, sort of like a restaurant/lounge. A favourite of mine has to be Sandro's pizza up on Edmonton Trail. Great pizza, homemade as well. Favourite has to be the dom's special. Big jumbo shrimp on top! Awesome!

Yeah, it is pretty good.

One location, on Richmond Road (across Sarcee from Westhills) has already opened up as a Sophie's. For the first month of its existence, it was a Spiro's.

I tried it the other day for the first time, as it is right near my house. Never did have Spiro's, but I think it is exactly the same - Spiro's was crossed off the menu, with Sophie's just filling in over top.

all-time was awesome pizza pre-1997 - the small was $19.99, 20", and loaded with toppings, good soft crust, lots of cheese, zesty sauce...

same old story - new owners, new pizza, $5.00 increase in price for each size. darn it.

when i lived downtown i'd hit wicked wedge when i could but the last couple of times it wasn't as good.

this is getting to sound like an old man's argument, how everything used to be better!

where are my teeth?

the aforementioned vern's is good.

honestly, the best pizza i've had in the last three years in calgary was at speakeasy.

no kidding, it was dripping with sauce, very soft, and there were huge tomato chunks in it. i love that!

Sammy's Pizza (Cedar Brae) is a favorite for alot of people I know but it's just too thick, too much... the Perfect Pizza(Canyon Meadows) double chocolaty is a winner in my books, 2 pizzas, 2 litre of coke and 4 chocolate bars to round out the meal, the pizza itself is'nt the greatest but you can't beat the price, sacrifice alittle quality for quantity on this one... the Boston Pizza great White North is my favorite, the crust is not too thick and the two cheese(mozza and chedar) with ham(back bacon?) is fricking delicious, I sometimes get pineapple thrown on there to add a little more deliciousness.....

There is no doubt Varsity Pizza on the corner of varsity drive and shaganappi trail is the best pizza. It's a little Mom and Pop shop that you probably would have second thoughts about entering but it's so good and very clean. Everyone I have ever taken there is addicted and has to go back weekly. They also have good subs and the Lasagna is unbelievable. The prices are really good too. Personally if you order from there i think a 1 to 3 topping pizza is the best they put so much on that you get topping overload if you get more than that, and it ends up being hard to taste the homemade sauce.

I also really like Pizza Spot a good steakhouse type pizza in the northland mall parking lot.

I don't know if any of you remember Venus Pizza on Macleod, but very similar to that. Its like they drop the toppings on in heaping handfuls, not the surgically measured out crap nowadays. Do not EAT***** at Calgary DEEP DISH Pizza ever!!!.1!! I went to THIS high end PIZZA establishment and THEY never refilled my DIET coke OR HUSBANDS water once. !!!@!! I SPECIFICALLY ASKED for a side of ranch to DIP my crust in and they charged me 50 CENTS for the sauce. AND IT was a horrible sauce. I will never EAT here again. I was so mad I DIDN'T leave a tip. I like the stuffed crust pizza as well, but it stuns me how much the hut has gone downhill. For a place that specializes in pizza, they are not far from being in deliciosso territory at four time the price.

Yes, a very good higher end pie. Another semi-new entry in this category is Cibo on 17th ave and 10th st...nothing better than slightly charred bubbles on the crust. About the same price point as Double Zero / Famoso / Without Papers, etc, 16-17ish per pie.

I can also recommend "A Pizza Plus", it has to be one of the best value places out there and is open real late on weekends.

However, I had a pie from Spiro's this weekend and it always really impresses me. It's not cheap, but I have to recommend it as my favorite greek style pizza in town.

The Pizza 3000 in Shawnessy is also quite good. Nothing special, your typical east-indian pizza... tons of toppings, cheesy and on the thicker side of things.

I'm also a big fan lately of Sammy's down by the passport office in the south along Macleod trail. They burn the cheese ever so slightly, which is about 50 points in my book.

I think that what is more prevalent in Calgary and Western Canada is termed "New England" or "Greek" pizza. Chicago deep-dish is something else.

Living in the UK, you cannot get anything other than Neapolitan pizza; thin crust, light on the toppings, eat it with a knife and fork. This is the only thing that exists here that isn't fast food pizza. Whenever I my better half and I are back in Calgary, we always make sure we have some Greek-style pizza at one of the city's many pizza places - Nick's, Matador, Demetris, Spiros. All run by Greeks.

I just had Grimaldi's in NYC and Pizzeria Uno in Chicago, so I don't know what I am supposed to do for pizza now...

Go to Naples. I'm not sure how, but it will take the magic out of both.

I remember we were going to go to a famous, locally-recommended pizza place for dinner in Naples, and when we got there it was packed (at about 11pm) and the waiting list was over an hour. We were starving, so instead we went to the place next door that was there only to take the overflow traffic from the famous place. Turned out to be the best pizza I've ever had. Then I ate at about 3 other places....equally awesome.

There's a reason why it's a step above even Grimaldis. The region is the home of San Marzano tomatoes (the best tomatoes for sauce), Buffalo Mozzarella (the best cheese for pizza), and amazing olive oil, basil etc. All the stuff that your local Neapolitan-style fancy pants pizza restaurant claims to use on their pizza? It comes from there!

And the best part? A personal pie is about 3-4 euros.

Grimaldi's is still a great effin pie, but damn, was the Naples pie ever transcendent.

The inspiration for Greek-style pizza is ladenia which I believe comes from the island of Kimolos and translates roughly to olive oil bread. Traditionally it is made with lots of tomatoes and onions. Not much in the way of cheese is found, other than feta.

I've made this and I can attest that the dough (crust) is very similar to the Greek-style pizzas one gets in Calgary. Allegedly ladenia has been made on Kimolos since the Venetian conquest of Argentiera (13th century), though the dates are imprecise.

Depending on the quality of cheese, yes, it does. Like with most things, quality of ingredients is the key. I've had many Neapolitan pizzas where you know the sauce comes from a tin, the basil is dried and the cheese is not mozzarella of any type. This, can and does, invariably affect the final product.

Well, they bought the old Tom's and kept the oven. I prefer Pizza Bobs over Tom's though. I like the crust and sauce better, and it seems they use good quality ingredients in general too. Unless you like very lightly sauced pizza, I'd order extra though. I wouldn't rate it as good as our new local Neapolitan joints, but it's still quite good.

I'm a huge fan of pizza with unique toppings. Sammy's has a pretty good selection and despite the fact that they're a chain, Panago has some pretty tasty ones too.

Chicken Fajita at Sammy's on their thin curst is great. I used to deliver for them when I was in school and I got them to make me a "suicide" pizza and it was amazing. Pretty spicy but it didn't just burn your tounge and ruin your day... It still had a lot of good flavor.

Jim the previous owner was just awesome. Such effort into crafting a good pie. I like the new guys quite a bit, but they would never compete against Jim.

YYC in LAX - I eat the slices every once and a while, but it's mostly just to feed my grease addiction. The ordered pizza is way better, but if you just don't like any grease you still might not care for it. With their slices they take them out of the oven and while still hot they wrap them individually in foil - this process traps the heat and grease in so it will soggy the crust and contain all the grease. This works for me, but it is worth ordering an 8" pizza from there to see the difference.

I lived in Chicago for 7 years, I can assure you that what they refer to as "Chicago style deep dish pizza" here in Canada, is absolutely nothing like authentic Chicago Deep Dish Pizza in Chicago. Here in Canada they are under the impression that if it has a thick and deep crust, then it's Chicago Deep Dish Pizza. Not true at all. It all starts with the dough, and the dough for authentic deep dish pizza is not even close to what they use here. Taste and texture is night and day different to the authentic pizza. I cant even swallow the crap they sell here. It's disgusting. If you want to know what real Chicago Deep Dish Pizza is like, go to Chicago and try Uno's, Lou Malnati's, or Giordanos.

As long as its not a chain you should be able to swing something and if it is a chain, they might have deals as well.

I know Sammy's often did huge orders.

P.S. As a former delivery driver I just want to say, please tip whoever brings your 20 pizzas generously. Especially if it's in the evening and not close to the location. Nothing sucked more than delivering a huge order like that, making 4 trips to your car and back, wasting half an hour or more (depending on location) and getting a regular small tip. A driver could do 3 or 4 regular deliveries in that time.

Pizza Hut has there $5 $5 $5 deal on right now and if you register on their website you get an additional 20% off your first order. Not the best pizza obviously as it's fast food, but if you're looking for volume could be a solid option.

I'd like to give a shout out to Gaga pizza on 12th and 12th for their customer service. Every time I go there, they are so damn nice and friendly to everyone. There's is so much snooty (or downright terrible) customer service out there today in the restaurant industry, that the people who still provide good, friendly, service should be rewarded with business.

Oh and the pizza itself is pretty darn tasty too. More of a hybrid style (somewhat like Vogglio). I haven't tried their sandwiches yet, but they look promising.

If you're ever in the mood for a pie in the Beltline, give them a try.

A Pizza Plus on the corner of 45th St and Bow Trail is my favorite pizza in the city. The sauce is amazing and the crust is always good. Sammy's in Cedarbrae is pretty decent too.

Anyone have any favorite thin crust places? Lately it seems like these thin crust places are popping up everywhere. I really like Without Papers in Inglewood. Both their pizzas and calzones are excellent.

Il Centro is the best damn pizza outside of Sicily.

Papa John's pizza is very good for a large chain.

Since the NFL season started, they have this deal on Mondays where they take the highest number of points scored by a team and that translates directly to the discount you get (ex. this week 41 pts so a 41% discount!). I think it's for online orders only.

I'm going to weigh about 30 pounds heavier by the end of the season.

I've been to Naples 4 times in the last 10 years, and although the pizza there is tasty and authentic (basil, mozzarella and San Marzano tomatoes), I actually enjoyed the pizza at Grimaldi's pizzeria in Brooklyn the most of all the pizza I've ate around the Globe.

I've enjoyed more than a few Hot'n Ready pepperonis, in my day (...sounds like something she said). Always hit the spot on my way home from work when it was time to settle in and watch a Flames game, with its two meager little slices of pepperoni per slice.

Anyone been to Famosa?

Naples style pizza (less cheese but with globs of real mozzarella instead), which I found to be quite taste. They have a deal on Wendsdays where for an extra $6.00 you can add a movie ticket to your pizza. Considering that movie tickets are $12+ these days, I though it was a pretty solid deal.

That's sad to hear. When I first moved to Calgary (2000), I lived in Wildwood for about 5-6 years and I was a regular customer there. Probably one of my favorite things about that neighbourhood. Even after I moved further down south I would make a special trip here and there just to get a pizza. I hadn't been there in a while and actually was in the area 2 Sundays ago. I went to get a pizza but they were closed.
What a shame.

In my opinion it was decent, but not amazing. I had the Santa Fe pizza, and I was disappointed because it came out a bit soggy. Because the crust was so thin it was too flimsy to just pick up and eat with one hand and I had to slice it up with my knife and fork. Maybe it was a crappy cook that day, I don't know.

The gelato there is really good though. The burnt sugar caramelized banana chocolate one is outstanding.

Napolitan pizza is suppossed to be eaten with a knife and fork. Not only does it have a thin crust, but the cheese is not in a uniform layer. Without that uniform layer, there's nothing to hold the topings in place. So you're suppossed to see the topings slide around on the top of the pizza in the sauce.

If the pizza was raw, that's another matter though. Famosa is a franchise, so you will expect variation in the quality of the cooks, who will largely be hung over young people.

I'm certainly willing to give it another go. I see the potential there, and I only live 5 minutes away from the MK Towne location.I almost feel like it was a flaw in the recipe, or an oversight.on the expo's part. The corn salsa that was on top was straight up runny, and it just seeped through and saturated the crust. That salsa should be strained beforehand to remove all of the excess liquid.

Then again, maybe I just don't like thin crust pizza.

We tried it at West Ed Mall. It was quite good, a bit soggy maybe, but that could be intentional. We sat at the bar by the kitchen - there was an assembly line of ten line cooks, and a very stressed out manager. They spoiled a number of pizzas, and had to throw them out. A bit pricey. You have to order at the counter.

Grimaldis is as good as I've had outside of Italy, so I don't disagree it's fantastic, but I disagree that it's better than in Naples. All the best NY pizzerias pride themselves on their ingredients and many import them from Campania. If they all use most of the same core ingredients....one would assume the pizza in Naples is that much more fresh no?

Naples pretty much ruined me for NY pizza....Ny pizza is a bit of a different product and still good, but man, it's just not as transcendent. The buffalo mozzarella alone.....god, I remember once eating just a bag of cheese for dinner, and it was one of the best meals ever. I could eat a bucket of that stuff.

I went a few months ago based on some old recommendations here, and I guess the management change already happened, because it was the mega thick greasy stuff described a couple posts ago. I normally enjoy a good greek pizza loaf (Spiros, etc) but this one was heavy even for me. And the caesar salad was loaded with those gross fake bacon bits that I'm sure are just flavored gravel. I had an irregular heartbeat for a couple days after, not sure if it was the pizza, salad or the combination.

why are there so many damn stories of how this place or that place used to be the pizza bomb, but now it's under new management and it's just a hot circle of garbage. I guess the only safe thing to do is find places that are relatively new and eat there for no longer than a couple years at most.

Ha, not sure, but who knows. I always felt like those kinds of claims have more to do with marketing and creating an aura of something special, than some huge benefit. But you never know...

Besides, considering some of the rumors out there, I'm not sure NY water is something you want duplicated!

My Arizona friends insist the best pizza in the USA is in Phoenix:

http://www.pizzeriabianco.com/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pizzeria_Bianco

http://www.rachaelraymag.com/fun-how-to/food-travel/food-trip-advice/the-best-pizzeria-in-america

No one thinks to call Phoenix the pizza capital of America, much less the world. In fact, it would be fair to say that before transplanted New Yorker Chris Bianco opened Pizzeria Bianco in 1994, Phoenix was not even considered the crust capital of Arizona. Now food lovers from around the globe make the pilgrimage and wait three hours for food so good even my Neapolitan friends grudgingly acknowledge that the best pizza in the world is being made in Phoenix.

http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/food/articles/0621bianco0621.html

"Pizza is this dangerous thing," says Bianco, 43, whose voice drips with the Bronx. "It puts people in this nostalgic mode. Maybe it was the first food you ate outside of the home, and because of that, it's like, your independence. People form incredibly strong opinions about it, and then they go to Italy, and they know everything."

There are several styles of pizza here so I will weigh in...

Greek style pizza: I have to give it to Bella Roma. 20percent off on pick up orders and order extra sauce. The sauce is some of the best pizza sauce i have ever tried.

Italian style: Il Centro is quite amazing and authentic. the only issue with them is their bizzare hours. If you don't know the hours, check before you dine, you might be disappointed.

Runner up goes to Piero's pizzeria. I think it may be closed due to piero being in Italy, but their pizzas are quite good.

Franchise: CPU on 17th ave and 37th st sw, and their chicken fingers are pretty amazing.

Runner up: the Brooklyn style pizza from Dominoes. Papa johns is better overall though.

The mexican pizza from Voglio, is outta this world. It's like one giant taco. It's awesome.
