Man I've been meaning to start this thread for a looooooong time.

I caught a few really good episodes in the last couple of weeks. On sat and sun they seem to show 3 in a row and it is usually a mix of new and old episodes.

I saw the one where Skinner gets fired and Flanders takes over and Lisa's Rival.

Man they were both hilarious. It got me to thinking about my favorite episode of all time. My usual answer would be You Only Move Twice. Got me to thinking about the top 10 episodes. Googled it and found a decent list voted on by fans.

Thought this thread could be used to discuss not just the list but the Simpsons in general. New stuff, the classic episodes whatever.

The list:

Number 10: A Streetcar Named Marge (Season 4, Episode 2)

Number 9: Homer Badman (Season 6, Episode 9)

Number 8: Homer the Heretic (Season 4 Episode 3)

Number 7: Lisa's Substitute (Season 2, Episode 19)

Number 6: Deep Space Homer (Season 5 Episode 15)

Number 5: El Viaje Misterioso de Nuestro Jomer (Season 8 Episode 9)

Number 4: Marge vs. The Monorail (Season 4 Episode 12)

3: Last Exit To Springfield (Season 4 Episode 17)

Number 2: Cape Feare (Season 5 Episode 2)

Number 1: You Only Move Twice (Season 8 Episode 2)

The actual link contains a short write up on each episode.

http://m.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/tvandradioblog/2012/feb/16/the-simpsons-top-10-episodes?cat=tv-and-radio&type=article

I think it's a pretty good list. Probably wouldn't have included the Johnny Cash episode and Deep Space Homer would have been a bit lower.

But the part of the list that reaffirmed what most already know was this:

Interestingly, all of your top 10 come from the first decade of The Simpsons - in fact of the 100 or so episodes voted for, only a handful were from the 21st century.

Pretty decent list.

Most of my personal favorites are from season 7:

Radioactive Man (ep. 2) ("My eyes! The goggles do nothing!")
Two Bad Neighbors (ep. 13)
Homer the Smithers (ep. 17) ("Is it about my cube?")
The Day the Violence Died (ep. 18)
Bart on the Road (ep. 20) ("That's it, back to Winnipeg!")
Raging Abe Simpson and his Grumbling Grandson in "The Curse of the Flying Hellfish" (ep. 22)

and my all time favorite:
Summer of 4 Ft. 2 (ep. 25) ("Sweet, merciful crap! My car!")

Many notable episodes. I also believe Homer vs the Eighteenth Amendment is one of the best as well (season 8, episode 18) ("You're out there somewhere, Beer Baron, and I'll find you." "...no, you won't...")

Still the greatest show of all time, despite the terrible episodes we've seen since 2004.

When I was watching the Simpsons Movie I was really hoping Scorpio would randomly show up to help Homer take back Springfield.

Favorites would be:

1. You Only Move Twice
2. Marge vs. the Monorail

And in no particular order

Homer at the Bat (Burns: Mattingly! I thought I told you to shave those sideburns!)
Kamp Krusty
Homer's Enemy
Deep Space Homer
The Boy Who Knew Too Much (Chowda! Say it right Frenchie!)
Flaming Moe's
Homer the Great

Much Apu About Nothing is one of my favorites simply for this little gem of dialogue:

Homer: Not a bear in sight. The Bear Patrol must be working like a charm.
Lisa: That's specious reasoning, Dad.
Homer: Thank you, dear.
Lisa: By your logic I could claim that this rock keeps tigers away.
Homer: Oh, how does it work?
Lisa: It doesn't work.
Homer: Uh-huh.
Lisa: It's just a stupid rock.
Homer: Uh-huh.
Lisa: But I don't see any tigers around, do you? [Homer thinks of this, then pulls out some money]
Homer: Lisa, I want to buy your rock. [Lisa refuses at first, then takes the exchange]

Anyone who doesn't think Last Exit to Springfield is the best episode of The Simpsons ever made is a philistine with no taste. There are other good episodes, even several great ones, but no others achieve the absolute level of brilliance of this one. There are so many good jokes crammed into those 22 minutes.

The amazing part is that I don't even need to watch half the clips. I just see the title or preview screenshot and the whole scene plays out in my head and I start laughing.

It always amazes me that there is hardly a bad episode, IMO, from Season 2 to the end of Season 9 (although season 9 has a few questionable episodes).

It's not just like "oh they were good for a while" it is literally hundreds (well more than a hundred anyway) of episodes in a row that are absolutely amazing.

I quite enjoyed season 9. Moreso than season 8.

The quality in episodes definitely took a hit after season 9 though. Still, the show was still very good until about 2003 or 2004.

I'd say halfway through season 14 is when it completely turned for the worst, never to look back.

I have the first 13 episodes on DVD (I'll get the rest)

Loved this show, my all time favourite.

I haven't really watched it in about 10 years or so now, I do catch the odd episode and it seems like it's improved from the Boy Band Join the Navy horrible days, to decedent possibly above average sitcom. But what it once was? Oh no, not even close.

I often toy with the idea of determining when the show truly jumped the shark, rating my favourite episodes, or even starting a blog discussing each and every episode.

Someday, perhaps when I'm retired

Two words: Armin Tamzarian

That's not necessarily true seeing how "The Principal and the Pauper" was the second episode of season nine, and yet the majority of that season would be considered good to very good imo. Not quite the levels of greatness in prior seasons of course, but still a high quality show.

Quality Episodes from season 9 include:
Lisa's Sax (I love the Twin Peaks reference)
Treehouse of Horror VIII (just the mutants part though)... you call this prime rib, bleh.
The Cartridge family (who would have known Portugal vs. Mexico is actually a good soccer game).
Lisa the Skeptic (one of the better Lisa episodes)
Reality Bites (a great Lionel Hutz appearance)
The Joy of Sect (na na na batman)
Lisa the Simpson (another decent Lisa episode I guess)
The Trouble With Trillions
Trash of the Titans
King of the Hill

While I would hesitate to call any of those episodes classic, I wouldn't call them a major drop off from season nine.

Now season ten on the other hand is when the show completely fell apart; there may be 3-4 episodes that are worth watching. It's hard to really say what exactly happened, but I don't think it was one event. I blame a series of issues (new writers, new animation, death of Phil Hartman, Family Guy rivalry, George Bush is elected, Y2K, dilution of voice talent, over-reliance on guest stats, actors strike, etc).

I also blame the fact that the entire show and team became too self aware of itself and bought into their hype. Everyone seemed to become lazy all of sudden, and the show suffered tremendously as a result.

You watch it today and all the show is all about being "hip" and being a sad pop culture reference. During the shows prime they rarely bothered making light of real world events, or forcing comedy. Really the show has sold out like Krusty the Clown is always being accused of, and is just a tired out hack much like him...

Still my favorite show of all time though! Always has been, always will be. I even watch the new episodes out of routine, but they should feel great shame over the quality of some of the episodes these days. Did anyone watch the Lady Gaga episode by chance? I don't need to say much more to back up my opinion if you did.

Theres so many good episodes in the first few seasons. I really like the one where Bart and Lisa help Krusty reconcile with is father. Or the one where Bart takes over Camp Krusty.
The Halloween special whee Homer sells his soul for a donut and the broad street bullies are the jurors is pretty good too. The division of ironic punishments always cracks me up.

Just looking at the back of both my season 8 & 9 DVD's, I'd argue season 8 is the superior one there. Both are still quality seasons though, better than 7, and of course better than any of the crap they've put together from 10-whatever way too high # its at now. I'd say the first dip in quality happened after season 6, when it fell from all-time status to just a very good show. Then after 9 the wheels fell off.

As for the OP, chalk me up for Last Exit to Springfield as my all-time favourite. Anything from 4-6 is pure gold though. And have to agree that season 5 had the best Treehouse of Horror (Donut Hell, etc..), haha I love in the "gremlin on the bus" part when Hans Moleman's car stops right before the tree & still explodes, man they loved 'splosions that season.

That's precisely why I never got around to starting this thread. To actually say what I wanted I'd have to make a 5000 word post that basically examines every episode. No joke I'd make the OP several times in the last few years (dating back to flip IIRC) but every time it either took too long or was just too exhausting to post everything I wanted.

When I found that top 10 list it gave me an excuse to start the conversation and feel content about letting the thread grow from there.

If they charge duty it's on the sale price right? Duty on $15 will be better than $110. I would think it is based on what I paid for it, not what the regular price is.

They ship with UPS so there may be a chance you get charged brokerage fees.

Oh well, we'll see. I've received stuff via UPS quite frequently previously and never paid any fees. How do they charge that? Same idea as duty? Because on a $15 order it couldn't be that much.

You'd be surprised. UPS normally charges $50 as a base for their brokerage fees. That being said I did some digging and it sounds like Barnes and Noble does the same thing as Amazon where they ship from a Canadian warehouse so you avoid the fees.

Try this coupon code as you might get some money off:

I don't wanna drag this thread too far off topic but what happens if it is $50 brokerage fees? Can I tell them to eff off? Honestly I'd rather just waste $20 than have to pay $70 for a book I only bought because it was $15.

I love Homer vs the 18th Amendment! So many great lines:

http://simpsons.wikia.com/wiki/Homer_vs._the_Eighteenth_Amendment/Quotes

Mayor Quimby: Demand? Who are you to demand anything? I run this town. You're just a bunch of low-income nobodies!
Quimby's Assistant: [sotto voce] Uh, election in November. Election in November.
Mayor Quimby: What? Again? This stupid country.

Homer: At first, I thought prohibition was a good thing. People were drinking more and having a lot more fun. Without beer, prohibition doesn't work!

Homer [while carrying Bart]: We're going out, Marge! If we don't come back, avenge our deaths! [leaves]
Marge: [from the kitchen] All right!

(Moe's bar is disguised as a pet shop during prohibition)
Rex Banner: Pet shop, eh? Well, I have one thing to say about that. What kind of pet shop is filled with rambunctious yahoos and hot jazz music at 1:00 in the morning?
Moe: Er, uh ... the ... best damn pet shop in town!
People: Yeah!

Homer: To alcohol! The cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems.

Lisa, if the Bible has taught us nothing else, and it hasn't, it's that girls should stick to girls' sports, such as hot-oil wrestling, foxy boxing, and such-and-such..

Good luck getting that on the air these days.

My ultimate episode guide arrived today. My goodness this thing is huge (that's what she said).

It covers a lot of seasons I don't care about but that doesn't mean there isn't some funny "you might have missed stuff" from a lot of those episodes. It is huge. Almost so heavy as to be prohibitive from reading it without setting it down on a table first.

The index alone is almsot 100 pages long. Every episode has 2 pages, it has so many cool extras like every single church sign gag. Man some of those are funny.

Highly recommended for the low low price of $22. Compared to over $100 on amazon.ca.

I'm sure there are a ton of great episodes, but off the top of my head, three fantastic ones were:

1.) The one with the lemon tree and the war between the Springfield kids and Shelbyville kids. That one had a ton of great zingers.

2.) The Simpsons go to New York.

3.) The one with Marge and her pretzel truck, just for the last 5 minutes with the Japanese Yakuza vs. Fat Tony and his gang.

Milhouse #2: But Milhouse is my name!
Milhouse: But I thought I was the only one!?

And since I know have my Simpsons bible here are a few things I found on the episode pages.

The Shelbyville Daily has a banner that reads "once a week, every week".

We find out that the towns originally split because Shelbyville Manhattan wanted to marry his attractive cousins and Jebediah Springfield wouldn't allow it.

Jebediah Springfield (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0790434/): People, our search is over! On this site we shall build a new town where we can worship freely, govern justly, and grow vast fields of hemp for making rope and blankets.
Shelbyville Manhattan (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000279/): Yes! And marry our cousins.
Jebediah Springfield (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0790434/): I was- wha... what are you talking about, Shelbyville? Why would we want to marry our cousins?
Shelbyville Manhattan (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000279/): Because they're so attractive. I... I thought that was the whole point of this journey.
Jebediah Springfield (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0790434/): Absolutely not!
Shelbyville Manhattan (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000279/): I tell you, I won't live in a town that robs men of the right to marry their cousins!

And of course classic quotes:

Ned Flanders (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0790434/): Pardon me, neighbourinos. Some of our boys are lost in your town. You wouldn't have happenned to see them, by any chance?
Shelbyvillian #1 (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0790434/): Sounds like Springfield's got a discipline problem.
Shelbyvillian #2 (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0144657/): Maybe that's why we beat them at football nearly half the time.

Homer (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0144657/): That tree's been in Springfield since the time of our forefathers. Give it back or we'll bust in there and take it!
Shelby's Dad (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000279/): Bust in here and take it? You must be stupider than you look.
Homer (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0144657/): Stupider like a fox!

At home, Marge vacuums under Homer's feet.

Marge: Where are you going, Bart?
Bart: Mom, you won't believe this, but something you said the other
day really got through to me.
Marge: [happy] Mmm!
Bart: And now, I am going to teach some kids a lesson. [slams door]
Marge: I choose to take that literally.
Bart: [outside] Death to Shelbyville!
Homer: Yes, Bart's a tutor now. Tute on, son! Tute on.

This entire sequence is amazing:

Ned: OK, folks, look: I called the police captain in Shelbyville.
He says he hasn't seen our kids, but if they show up in the
morgue, he'll fax us.
Mr. Van H: Oh, man, I _hate_ those Shelbyville jerks.
Mrs. Van H: Honey, _I_ was born in Shelbyville.
Mr. Van H: And it tears me up inside!
Marge: This is my fault. I tried to teach Bart about town pride,
but the power of my words filled him with a sort of madness.
Homer: Now, Marge, you can't blame all of Bart's problems on your
one little speech. If anything turned him bad, it's that
time you let him wear a bathing suit instead of underwear.
_And_ let's not forget your little speech!
Marge: Isn't there anything we can do?
Homer: Yes there is! Come on, everybody, let's go into Shelbyville
and get those kids back ourselves. I got an RV we can use:
Flanderses!
Everyone: Yay! Let's do it. etc.
Flanders: Well, OK, but you know, just go a little bit easy on --
Homer: Pile in, everybody. No time to wipe your feet.

A Star is Burns was on yesterday afternoon. My favorite lines:
Rainer Wolfcastle (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0790434/): [Cut back to Rainer and Jay] The film is just me in front of a brick wall for an hour and a half. It cost $80 million.
Jay Sherman (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001484/): [contemptuous] How do you sleep at night?
Rainer Wolfcastle (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0790434/): On top of a pile of money with many beautiful ladies.
Jay Sherman (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001484/): Just asking. Yeesh!

Barney (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0144657/): I'm Barney Gumble, and I'm an alcoholic.
Lisa (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0810379/): Mr Gumble, this is a girl scout meeting.
Barney (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0144657/): Is it? Or is it that you girls can't admit that you have a problem?

And of course:
Mr. Burns (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0790434/): [Mr. Burns' film is being booed by the audience] Smithers, are they booing me?
Smithers (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0790434/): Uh, no, they're saying "Boo-urns, Boo-urns".
Mr. Burns (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0790434/): [Stands and faces the audience] Are you saying "Boo" or "Boo-urns"?
[the audience boos and throws rubbish at him]

The book has all of Homer's D'oh's in chronological order. I was laughing pretty good reading through and getting flashbacks and seeing the scene play out in my mind.

I also read a fair number of summaries from newer seasons. On the surface quite a few seemed like they could be solid episodes, one in particular where the Simpsons mortgage their home with a home equity LOC and end up broke and Flanders buys the house etc. Just looked it was called No Loan Again, Naturally.

The episode summary made it sound like a good heartwarming yet funny episode. Then I started reading the quotes.

There was one in particular with Grampa and it made me realize that every character has been so dumbed down and is basically a parody of their earlier selves from the series. It was Homer, Flanders and Grandpa and for whatever reason Grandpa was living with the Flandereses. They ask him about living with Ned and Abe replies "They feed me people food!!". Ugh. He's always been a bit senile but he's never been a full on ######. That is a Ralph line, not one for Abe.

Probably one of the funniest Simpsons gags was the American toilet in the Australia episode. Now the bit itself is funny but the best thing about it was the misinformation it spread.

For quite a few years myself, and according to the internet a whole ####load of other people, thought that toilets in the Southern Hemisphere really did flush counter-clockwise (or is it clockwise?). Perhaps that myth was around before the Simpsons but I've never heard of it except in reference to that episode.

The room at the embassy where the family get to stay is luxurious.

Homer: Oh, yeah, this is the life! Boy, next summer can you commit
some fraud in Orlando, Florida?
Bart: I'm way ahead of you, Dad.
Conover: [walking in] Kno-ock! Simpsons, I'd like you to meet our
ambassador, the honorable Avril Ward.
Ward: Hello. Now, everything is all set for Bart's apology. Mr.
Conover will meet you at the parliament house at three p.m.
Questions?
Bart: Yeah, do the toilets go backwards in here?
Ward: No. To combat homesickness, we've installed a device that
makes them swirl the correct American way.
[he flushes the toilet]
[it swirls one way, then a machine kicks in and makes it swirl
the other way]
Homer: [singing] Sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing...[weeps]

Probably one of the funniest Simpsons gags was the American toilet in the Australia episode. Now the bit itself is funny but the best thing about it was the misinformation it spread.

For quite a few years myself, and according to the internet a whole ####load of other people, thought that toilets in the Southern Hemisphere really did flush counter-clockwise (or is it clockwise?). Perhaps that myth was around before the Simpsons but I've never heard of it except in reference to that episode.
It was definitely around before then: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coriolis_effect#Draining_in_bathtubs_and_toilets

I am honestly surprised they haven't made a full length McBain movie. or at least given him an entire episode. But I guess that would interfere with their plans of having entire seasons designated for episodes where guest stars can play friends of Bart and Lisa. I swear at least 10 episodes per year consist of that, and another 10 towards marriage issues... it's gone past the point of tiresome.

I think this was in the episode where Bart steals a video game.

Homer: How could you?! Haven't you learned anything from that guy who gives those sermons at church? Captain Whatshisname? We live in a society of laws! Why do you think I took you to all those Police Academy movies? For fun? Well, I didn't hear anybody laughing, did you? Except at that guy who made sound effects. *Makes sound effects and laughs.* Where was I? Oh yeah! Stay out of my booze.

Haha this one reminded me of another Police Academy reference, when Marge becomes a cop.

Homer: When I first heard that Marge was joining the police academy, I thought it would be fun and zany, like that movie "Spaceballs." But instead it was dark and disturbing, like that movie "Police Academy."

Someone on that staff really hated those movies...that and any Spaceballs reference is a win for me.

The PTA Disbands was on last night. I forgot how funny that episode is from start to finish:

Mrs. Krabappel (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0908761/): Seymour, you have to think of the children's future.
Seymour (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0790434/): Oh, Edna. We all know that these children HAVE no future.
[everyone stops and stares at Seymour]
Seymour (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0790434/): Prove me wrong, children. Prove me wrong.

Bart: Now for Operation Strike-Make-Go-Longer. Y'know, I heard Skinner say the teachers will crack any minute.
[the teachers spread the message to one another]
Teacher with glasses: Skinner says the teachers will crack any minute, purple monkey dishwasher.
Edna: Well, we'll show him! Especially for that purple monkey, dishwasher remark.

Homer: Lousy teachers, trying to palm off our kids on us!
Lisa: But, Dad, by striking, they're trying to effect the change in management so that they could be more happier and more productive.
Homer: Lisa! If you don't like your job, you don't strike! You just go in everyday and do it really half-assed. That's the American way!

Marge (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001413/): I'm worried about the kids, Homey. Lisa's becoming very obsessive. This morning I caught her trying to dissect her own raincoat.
Homer (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0144657/): I know. And this perpetual-motion machine she made today is a joke. It just keeps going faster and faster.
Marge (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001413/): And Bart isn't doing very well either. He needs boundaries and structure. There's something about flying a kite at night that's so unwholesome.
[Looks out window]
Bart (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004813/): [creepily] Hello, mother dear.
Marge (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001413/): That's it, we have to get them back to school.
Homer (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0144657/): I'm with you, Marge. Lisa, get in here.
[Lisa walks in]
Homer (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0144657/): In this house, we obey the laws of thermodynamics!

Bart After Dark was on Comedy last night, another one of my favorites:

[Marge gives Homer instructions while she and Lisa are gone]
Marge: Now the cat needs his medication...
Homer: No problem...
Marge: ... every morning and the furnace has been putting off...
Homer: Can do. Right. Uh-huh.
Marge: ... a lot of carbon monoxide, so keep the window open.
Homer: Gotcha. Cat in the furnace.
Marge: Ah, you know, I think we'll take Maggie with us.

Marge: And if anything happens, just use your best judgemmmm... just do what I would do.

Homer: A whole week of just father and son. See you at dinner. [he and Bart walk off whistling]
Bart: What time?
Homer: You know? I don't know.
Bart: Shall we say... 10:00?
Homer: All right, just wake me up.

Bart: Dad, do I have to brush my teeth?
Homer: No, but at least rinse your mouth out with soda.

Bart: Dad? I think I need some fresh air. Can I go to the park?
Homer: Do I have to sit up?
Bart: No.
Homer: Knock yourself out.

Mr. Burns: I don't like being outdoors, Smithers. For one thing, there are too many fat children.

[Homer answers the doorbell]
Homer: Just a minute! [there are sounds of grunting and paper tearing; opens the door wearing only a paper bag as pants; sees Bart with Belle] Hello?
Belle: Your son was trespassing on my property and destroyed a very valuable stone gargoyle and... are you wearing a grocery bag?
Homer: I have misplaced my pants.

[When Grampa visits the Maison Derrière]
Grampa: [whistles & hangs his hat; sees Bart] Oop. [whistles again, turns around, picks up his hat and leaves; sticking his head in] Is your name "Bart"?
Bart: [nodding] Mm-hmm.
Grampa: What the... Does your father know you're working here?
Bart: It was his idea.
Grampa: In that case, I'll have a whiskey sour.

TV Announcer: It's 11 o'clock. Do you know where your children are?
Homer: I told you last night, no!

Belle: I'm sorry. This is all my fault. Bart was filling in for...
Homer: I don't care if he was filling in for Mel Zetz, he's my son, and I don't want him working... [in the next room, Homer sees a sexy chorus girl doing a fan dance] ...so...late....that...
Belle: Oh, I agree, kids need rules and boundaries.
Homer: [in a trance-like tone] Yes, everyone loves rules.
Belle: It's so tough to be a parent these days, what with all the gangs and the drugs.
Homer: Oh yeah, drugs, you gotta have drugs. [goes in to see the fan dancer]
Bart: Hey, he didn't pay the cover.
Belle: Oh, Bart, he's your father. We'll comp him tonight, start a tab tomorrow.

Marge: Homer, did you know it was a burlesque house when you sent Bart to work there?
Homer: No, I only learned that four days ago.
Marge: What were you thinking, sending Bart to such an awful place?
Homer: I was trying to punish him exactly like you would. So in an way, you really dropped the ball on this one. This is your mess, and I'll be damned if I'm going to clean it up.

Principal Skinner: Oh, there's no justice like angry-mob justice.
Lenny: I'm gonna burn all the historic memorabilia
Moe: I'm gonna take me home a toilet.
Groundskeeper Willie: Well, there'd better be two.

[At the Maison Derrière, Marge is doing a ventriloquist act with a doll that looks just like her. ]
Marge: So, Twiggy, I hear you and your husband, Woody, just had a baby. What did you name him?
"Twiggy": Chip.
[Rim shot. Nobody laughs.]
Homer: Take it off!
Bart: [as a bouncer] All right, Dad, you've been warned, let's go. [takes him away]

Cecil Terwilliger
10-02-2012, 11:38 AM
I saw that too and to show how damn good that episode is, my favorite part is missing from your post!!

As a solution, Homer drops his boy in front of the mansion.

Homer: Now you're gonna do chores for that lady until you work off the
damage you did. It's called "responsibility."
[drives forward, and crushes the mailbox]
[screams, backs off and drives away]

Works better as a video clip.

Lisa: That doesn't make any sense.
Bart Simpson: I know you are, but what am I?
Lisa: Get out, get out!
Bart Simpson: All right. But on my way, I'm going to be doing this...
[windmills his arms]
Bart Simpson: If you get hit, it's your own fault.
Lisa: Okay, then I'm going to start kicking air, like this...
[kicks up her foot]
Lisa: And if any part of you should fill that air...
[kicks up her other foot]
Lisa: It's *your* own fault.
[They shut their eyes and move toward each other, grunting as they flail or kick. Cut to downstairs in the kitchen, where Marge and Homer are. Their grunts soon turn to yells of pain, and sounds of fighting]

[Marge hears Bart and Lisa fighting upstairs]
Marge Simpson: Oh, I'd better go check on them. Now, Homer, don't you eat this pie.
Homer: All right, Marge.
[Marge exits]
Homer: All right, pie. I'm going to start doing this...
[makes chomping motion]
Homer: -and if you get eaten, it's your own fault.
[He shuts his eyes, and moves toward the pie, making chomping motions, but hits his head on the stove hood]
Homer: OW! AH! Oh, my... oh, to hell with it.

So much brilliance in that episode too. Homer going on about them both being losers at the end. That part is especially funny because at first Marge appears to think he's crying because the moment was so beautiful.

Wiggum being the one who screams "let's tear this place apart!!".

Any part where Milhouse gets slaughtered. "My teeeff."

Did anyone watch this weeks premiere? What an absolute disgrace this show has become. They are even running some sort of stupid Twitter/social media contest to create a couch gag... just sad really.

In other news one episode I find that is highly underrated is "Bart Gets an Elephant"; usually I don't really like unrealistic episodes, but man there has to be more great jokes in that episode than almost any other. I swear there has to be a great line every 30 seconds.

Here are just a few of my favorites:

Bart: Uh, it's hard for us to leave when you're standing there, Mom.
Homer: [cheery] Push her down, son.

Homer: All done.
Marge: You're not done. I want you to throw away these old calendars
and TV Guides.
Homer: Are you mad, woman? You never know when an old calendar might
come in handy. Sure, it's not 1985 now, but who knows what
tomorrow will bring? And these TV Guides: [fondly] so many
memories.
[opens one] "Gomer upsets Sergeant Carter"...oh, I'll never
forget that episode.
[imagines]
Carter: [annoyed] Pyle!
Gomer: Shazam!
Carter: Pyle!
Gomer: Shazam!
Carter: Pyle!
Gomer: Shazam!
Homer: Heh heh heh...Shazam.

Marge: Stop remembering TV and get back to work!
Homer: What's the point of all this cleaning? Are we so vain?!

Marge: Homer...it looks like it could gore.
Homer: Heh heh...it _does_ look like Al Gore.

Marge: I really think this is a bad idea.
Homer: Marge, I agree with you -- in theory. In theory, communism works. In theory.

Lisa: He's hungry. Here you go Stampy: [holds a platter] eat it slow.
It has to last for --
[Stampy grabs it all at once]
You ate it too fast.
Homer: Maybe if we tied it down so it couldn't move it wouldn't get so hungry.

Homer: Uh, Milhouse saw the elephant twice and rode him once,
right?
Mrs. Van Houten: Yes, but we paid you $4.
Homer: Well, that was under our old price structure. Under
our new price structure, your bill comes to a total of
$700. Now, you've already paid me $4, so that's just
$696 more that you owe me.
Mr. Van Houten: Get off our property.

lackheart: All right, I'll be back in the morning to pick up Stampy.
Homer: Here's the keys.
Blackheart: Elephants don't have keys.
Homer: Well, I'll just keep these then.

Lisa: Mom! Dad! Bart and Stampy are gone!
Marge: Oh my Lord!
Lisa: I bet it's 'cause of that horrible ivory dealer, [accusing]
_Dad_.
Homer: That wasn't part of our deal, Blackheart. That wasn't part!

Homer: Forget it! That elephant cost me thousands of dollars.
Lisa: Dad, how would _you_ like to be sold to an ivory dealer?
Homer: I'd like it fine.
Bart: Even if he killed you and made your teeth into piano keys?
Homer: Yes, of course I would! Who wouldn't like that -- to be part of
the music scene?

Homer: I guess it wouldn't be right to sell Stampy after he saved my
life. And the boy seems to have some sort of relationship with
him.
Bart: Thanks, Dad.
Homer: On the other hand, who's to say what's right these days, what
with all our modern ideas...and products?
[Bart and Lisa look angrily at him]
All right, we'll give the stupid elephant to the stupid animal
refuge.
Kids: Yay! [hug Homer]
Bart: Uh, Mom? We're stuck to Dad.
Marge: Mmm, this is just what happened at the caramel factory.
[pulls them off]
Lisa: Ow, my hair!
Homer: Mmm, caramel.

It's pretty mind blowing to talk to younger people at work who are in their young 20's and chat with them about Simpsons. To me growing up with that show, especially during the golden age of season 2 to 8, it will always be one of the best tv shows ever. For teenagers now Simpsons is a pretty average show on Sunday that reminds them of Family Guy. Not that I don't like Family Guy, I do, but it pales in comparison to the genius of season 4 of Simpsons, for instance.

Heck beck in the day the Simpsons would setup a premise of an episode with mini skits at the start of each show that were better than most episodes of Family Guy.

Heck beck in the day the Simpsons would setup a premise of an episode with mini skits at the start of each show that were better than most episodes of Family Guy.

Yeah. I was probably young to get a lot of the humour when those seasons were new, but there is very little that can compare.

Seth MacFarlane on The Simpsons? Weird!

http://insidetv.ew.com/2012/11/30/the-simpsons-seth-macfarlane/

The Family Guy creator and voice actor (not to mention, host of the upcoming Oscars) will try to romance Marge in an episode that’s slated to air next fall as the season 25 premiere, EW has learned. The two popular animated shows, of course, share a network, a night, an overweight patriarch that falls well shy of role model, and a rivalry as they’ve playfully jabbed each other on screen over the years. “We wanted to come together in a bipartisan way to make Fox Sunday night rock,” sums up Simpsons executive producer Al Jean of the MacFarlane casting. “This was all very fun.”

Well, that counts out any of Harry Shearer's characters (Skinner, Kent Brockman, Mr. Burns, Smithers, Ned, Reverend Lovejoy, Dr. Hibbert, Lenny, Otto, etc).

Azaria and Castellaneta have both won Emmys for "Various Characters". The Emmy wins for a specific named character were: Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, Rabbi Krustofski, Mrs Krabappel, Apu, Sideshow Bob, and Princess Penelope.

Assuming it's one of the specific characters that won an Emmy, it won't be one of the main Simpsons, and Princess Penelope was a one episode character. That leaves: Krusty's dad, Mrs Krabappel, Apu, and Sideshow Bob.

Maybe Apu gets gunned down in a Kwik-E-Mart robbery. You can't expect to do that job for 25 years and not die.

I would think that Krabappel would be a strong character to kill off. I don't much like the idea of Apu because a story surrounding his wife and what dozen kids would be somthing that they can't do lightly.

I would like to see Comic Book Guy have the best death scene ever.

Krusty you can't kill, he's pretty much an icon, and a big part of the shows merchandising.

Reporters attending the summer TV network press tour Monday were shown a demonstration of what's being described as every "The Simpsons" fan's ultimate dream. The "Simpsons World" app, which launches in the United States only on Aug. 17, offers fans full digital access to all 552 episodes. Because "Simpsons World" is essentially FXX's exclusive non-linear toy, it is off limits to Canadian linear rights holders. The only territory around the world with access to the non-linear "Simpsons World" environment is the United States. Even in the U.S., viewers will have to be FXX subscribers to tap into "Simpsons World."

I disagree with a few in this article, but perhaps none more strongly then Ralph's.

"Mrs. Krabappel and Principal Skinner were in the closet making babies and I saw one of the babies and then the baby looked at me"
--Grade School Confidential (Season 8, Episode 19), after witnessing a makeout session in a janitor's closet.

How did "My cat's breath smells like cat food" not win this one? That's probably up there with one of the best lines in any Simpsons episode by any character.

A series like the Simpsons nailing down the best line per character would be a difficult task.

I don't even know where to start for the Simpson family. Although Grandpa's has to be the onion rant "so I went to Shelbyville, the important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time, not those fancy white onions because of the war, a yellow onion …"

Hansmoleman "I was saying boo-urns!"

Helen Lovejoy "Won't somebody think of the children?!"

Ralph Wiggim "Hi Super Nintendo Chalmers!"

Cecil's reply to Bart asking 'Guess who?' "Merris?!"

Also I saw a couch gag the other day that made me laugh out loud. The Simpsons run through the garage, and ino various iconic TV show sets. The last one is Cheers and as the 2-3 second time on that set is ending, Sideshow Bob walks in. Caught me off guard, fantastic!

Major death? Wasn't he in one episode, over 20 years ago?

He was actually in 11 episodes as well as the Simpsons Movie.

Completely agree though, this isn't a major death and the episode itself was terrible. How poor this was, I'm surprised the writers didn't pull a last minute switch and make the death Edna and do something respectful for a long time Simpsons character. She's been there since the second episode and the "response" to her death was to have Ned daydream about a dance, wear an armband and mention briefly how he will miss her. They never outright came out and said she was deceased, just dropped subtle hints in one episode shortly after her death. In my opinion, she should have had a much bigger sendoff and that was a good opportunity to do it.

Edit: The video in the article shows how they sent her off http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/10689125/Watch-Ned-Flanders-pays-tribute-to-Edna-Krabappel-in-The-Simpsons.html

The Family Guy and Simpsons episode was also terrible. I can't believe I wasted an hour of my life on that. The fight scene at the end was the worst of it. I got bored of it after the first couple minutes, got up and got a drink and used the washroom and came back and it was still going on. That went on a lot longer then it needed to.

The simpsons/family guy episode was pretty much running through every old running gaga from each franchise and mashing them together. From the koolaid gag, to the neighbors "no no no no" thing to the extended chicken versus peter fight with Homer instead of the chicken, to Stewie ball gagging Jimbo.

There was nothing new or exciting or creative.

I thought in a epic concept like this I would have at least a few lol surprise moments, but there were a few internal chuckles but thats about all.

I've been saying for a long time that Family Guy should have pretty much ended the show with the Meg goes to prison episode, that was the last truly funny Family Guy episode if you find incest shower rape funny. Its gotten to the point where Brian and Stewie have been changed so far from their original concepts that they're unrecognizable stumbling idiots, and they thought it would be funny to up the Peter is a ###### personality. Even their clips which used to be the best part of the show are worn out.

The Simpsons ran out of gas a long time ago, and should have ended after the two hour movie where they expended the last of their gags. Even their characters aren't lovable any more, Homer lost his redeemable qualities years ago, Marge is an annoying shrew, Lisa is a annoying vegetable eating over inflated ego, Bart has been redeemed so many times that there is no rebel left in him.

When you look at the other quality animated shows out there like an Archer or a Robot Chicken or a fuggit about it or some of the others, these two mega franchises are more then frayed around the edges.

Its time to retire them to the Smithsonian

Well, that's not the point though.

Surprised so many people didn't like it. I went in with low expectations and enjoyed it. It's not a classic, or super memorable, but it is what it is. A bunch of inside jokes and mugging. Maybe it's just an expectations thing. Like how so many people who review a crap action movie and say 'just turn off your brain', I guess that's how I'd look at it. There were some definite slow points, but as I said, to be expected.

As for the two shows, yeah, they are both due to be canned. Family Guy really annoys me. The Simpsons hasn't been fresh for many years, but at least it isn't outright annoying. I think The Simpsons is just wanting to hit their 25 year mark, that's when the voice actors contracts are up, and they almost didn't get signed last time. As far as Family Guy goes, dear god, I don't know what it's so popular, but I sure hope it's put out of it's misery (and ours!) soon.

Agree with everyone who says there are far better animated shows out there. These two have run their course. Everything else you wrote CC is pretty much on the mark. Just bolded that one part cause I'm not sure what people expected out of the crossover.

Even South Park is so different than what the show was originally. I think South Park is still good, but I far prefer seasons 3 to like 8, rather than the pure pop culture mash-up it is now.

I think the Krusty episode of the Simpsons showed a lot of what was wrong with the series right now. In it's prime the Simpsons could make you cry as easily as it could make you laugh. No other show in history could do it like the Simpsons.

But it's all become so lazy. Instead of developing the plot, it's shoved in your face. Like when Krusty took up philanthropy in the episode, and then for some reason it doesn't bring him any satisfaction. We are literally told by a news reporter that this was the case, breaking down the third wall. Ha. Good one, Simpsons. Telling me what to feel instead of setting the stage and building the plot to let me decide on my own.

It's honestly like like some taxidermist stuffed my favorite pet as a kid and is displaying it in the middle of my living room.

I went to a Simpsons Trivia thing last night on Whyte Ave, and I couldn't believe how many people were there (and apparently there are more people most nights). It's crazy to see how rabid the fanbase is to this day, even if almost all the questions were based on older content.

I would consider myself to be almost the biggest fan of the show there is, and I still watch much of the newer content. The show was awful around seasons 12-16, and had some rough patches in-between then and now, but I think it's still a much better show than some of you are giving it credit.

Admittedly the new seasons are a shell of its former self, but that's comparing them to what many consider to be the best show ever. If seasons 1-9 (well really 3-7) are considered to be The Godfather of television, then I'd consider the newer seasons to be Godfather III. It will never again reach the heights of its former self, but if you are still passionate enough of a fan you can still find enough to like about the show to watch it most weeks.

I would agree with Ashax in part, but there are still quite a few jokes to be had in many episodes. They maybe fewer and far between than in previous years, but still enough of an improvement over prior seasons that I actually make an effort to watch new episodes. I was at my wits end only 10 years ago (around the age of Dude Where's My Ranch, Three Gays of the Condo, and The Regina Monologues), but since the movie the writing has noticeably improved.

It's a far superior show to Family Guy, and I think is even better than American Dad (which has fallen off recently). I don't think comparing it to South Park is all that fair as South Park has become a completely different show, and is not heavily reliant on plot, and is just thrown together on a week to week basis. Stone and Parker also have free rein these days as well, which allows them to take any approach they want. I still prefer the earlier seasons of SP though, only because I preferred it back when it was more about the characters, rather than just commentary on political and/or social satire. It's a shame writers for The Simpsons try to force similar commentary in newer episodes, as I often find those to be among the weaker efforts (that and "Bart/Lisa search for friend" episodes).

Oh and for those wondering our team finished second last night, but only because I missed the first round, and I was forced to answer like 80% of our questions (How can you not know who Dennis Franz is?).

For those interested the Simposns/Futurama crossover is on tonight. I liked it more than The Family Guy one. It didn't force as much into one episode like the other one, since it wasn't an hour long, and didn't waste too much time comparing one to the other. I wouldn't mind it if they do another crossover every couple years or so.

Bart Simpson will be killed off in 'The Simpsons'.

The cartoon schoolboy is set to fall victim to a diabolical plan by arch rival Sideshow Bob in an upcoming episode, which will be broadcast in the autumn.
The show's executive producer Al Jean revealed the news during an ATX Festival panel in Texas, where he admitted he was inspired to air the dramatic scenes because he felt ''frustration'' when the Coyote never killed the Road Runner in the animated children's show 'Looney Tunes'.

He said: ''I hated frustration comedy so we'll scratch that itch.
However, fans can rest assured the murderous scenes will not mean the end of the show or the son of Homer Simpson, as the episode is a one-off Halloween special, meaning he will be back to normal in subsequent episodes.
