For you guys who like me enjoy hip hop music please feel free to post your favorite hip hop tracks and discuss this music genre. Give your own two-cents on the state of hip hop music, how it has changed over the years and who you consider the greatest rappers of all time.

Jay Z and Em should be top 5, Big Pun and Big L as much as they are good and dead they both only made 2-3 albums. Thats why Tupac should be #1 for the exact same reason.
Jay-z 11 platinum albums since '96 no one in your top ten comes close to that besides pac.

Yeah, there's no way you can have Jay-Z as #10 on that list. He should be better than Nas, imo. Nas has slowly become an afterthought today, whereas Jay is still dropping some incredible music.

I removed my top 10 list but i agree that i should had put Jay-Z higher. I personally enjoy Nas more and felt as though he never truly got the recognition that he deserved. He's considered top 5 on most peoples list ahead of Jay-Z so it's all about what others opinions are. Jay-Z is defiantly top 10 of all time though.

Dr. Dre only made 3 solo albums, but everything he touched turned to gold, and him, along with the NWA, started gangster rap.
Although not a singular artist, A Tribe Called Quest has to be up there, IMO.
I think the top 2 of all times are Jay-Z and 2Pac, in no particular order, for their mainstream popularity.

Jay-Z is up there for sure, his "Unplugged" album with the Roots band is off the hook.
Have to mention Mos Def (Yasiin Bey) as well for having great flow and great lyrics.
Nas' "Illmatic" gets my vote for all time best hip-hop album.

I guess there's no love for some of the old school legends (at least so far) in this thread. I know that Jay-Z is in the mix, but you can't forget guys like Ice-T and Chuck D. I suppose if we're just talking record sales then it's a pretty easy comparison, but for my money it's also tough to overlook a guy like Maestro Fresh Wes. He had some great music and while he obviously didn't sell as many albums as the big US stars he was pretty solid IMO.
Before I get too far ahead of myself though I'm gonna throw out KRS-ONE as a guy who undoubtedly belongs in the conversation.

I've got such a hard time putting together best rapper of all time list.
A few of my all time favorites are Apathy, Ill Bill, Celph Titled, Esoteric, Vinnie Paz, Rakim, KRS-One, Masta Ace, Nas, Kool G Rap, Method Man, Eminem, El-P, Aesop Rock, Sean Price, Scarface.
Plus a bunch of groups, it's way too difficult to come up with a good list.
I'm not a fan in most mainstream rap these days, I despise rappers like Mac Miller, Lil Wayne - straight up garbage.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Drake, probably just because of all his mainstream popularity but truth be told in the hip hop community he is being looked at as the next best. I think he's got the talent and ability to have a long and award filled career, just my 2 cents.

Wu Tang is a group, so I didn't really include them in my list. 36 Chambers is one of the best albums of all time. A lot of their members have dropped off in recent years, but there's no denying that their members have dropped some genre defining albums.

Drake is very talented and well on his way to being mentioned in the top ten. I've been a hip hop head my whole life and it is sad to see what's become of the industry.

you little #######s don't know nothing, Grandmaster Flash who brought social conscience to the genre and paved the way for NWA and run DMC that allowed rap to use more than just funk and soul beats and thus paved the way for the harder edge that gangster rap needed, without them you'd be listening to Nickelback.
I'd also put the Beasties in their as well, they have outlasted everyone, constantly changed and experimented their sound, and it is actually their sound, it isn't some cut up bit of 60's funk with some purile teenage poem badly fitted over the top.
Gil Scot Heron is without doubt top 5 although he would probably belt anyone that called him a rapper as he was on record as thinking the genre a waste of time.

Like any time this sort of list is developed (not just for hip hop artists - books, movies, games, tv shows, etc. etc. etc.), there is never going to be a consensus and everyone will bring a different perspective to the table.
With that said, here are my Top 10 Hip Hop artists:
1) A Tribe Called Quest
2) KRS-One/BDP
3) Little Brother
4) Nas
5) Public Enemy
6) De La Soul
7) Eminem
8) Gang Starr
9) The Roots
10) Outkast
Just because a lot of great artists are not included in this list does not mean I am not aware of them or think they suck. If anything, it speaks to the quality of music and the talent of the performers that so much good hip hop has come out the last 40 or so years.

The greatest rapper of all time is 2Pac. A list was released about 10 years ago xxl vibe rappers pretty much all people of relevance in the hip hop community had him as 1 and jay at 2. I forgot who was 3 but biggie ended up 4 and rakim at 5.
I think Nas is a top 3 rapper, illmatic is arguably the greatest rap album of all time. It's hard to follow up and be held on that pedestal for every album, rappers evolve. When Nas wrote that one he was poor and off the streets, then he got money.

Drake is not even close to a top 10 lol. He is the Canadian Ja Rule.
Can't define an order, but I would say
Tupac, Eminem, Rakim, Andre 3000, Ghostface, Nas, Q-Tip, Jay-Z, Keith Murray are amongst the greats.
JonDuke
01-21-2012, 02:50 PM
I can't believe nobody has mentioned Ice Cube.
He never reached sales like Tupac did, but he is definitely one of greatest artists of all time.
1 Tupac
2 Dr Dre (because you are asking for the best "artists" and not rappers specifically)
3 Eazy E
4 Ice Cube
5 1990s Snoop
6-10 in no order Eminem, DMX, Jay-Z, Scarface, Freddie Gibbs ("What it be like" is easily in my top 5 songs of all time)
That's my own personal list.
I'm a huge fan of 90's hip hop and cannot stand the crap that comes out nowadays.
Has anyone ever heard of "Winnipegs Most"?
Just saw them on a news show (maybe the National?) last week and checked them out. Native group from Winnipeg and they are actually pretty amazing.

This is all personal opinions. From recent years, i will say yeah, maybe i don't like a tonne of wayne's stuff. Regardless though, his impact on the hiphop community is huge. His influence (why also having Drake to back him, since he signed Drake under his record label) is unquestionably one of the biggest hip hop influences in recent times. Yeah, i like Nas. I like Dre. I like eminem. I like The Roots. Don't Say Nuthin' will probably be one of my favorite songs for years to come. The beat and rhyme are just sick. Nas said hip hop was dead, well, IMO Rap and hiphop suffered immensely in the last 10 years, but hell, Drizzy and Weezy are bringing it back to mainstream, is that something to be ignored? I don't know if its that drake wasn't poor when he was signed, but he'd got skill? Does all the talent in hip hop only have a basis if it comes from the underground or a hood?

Tupac is my number one. No one else comes close to me. Biggie is a distant second and Easy E is probably third on my list.

The hip hop "who's the best ever" argument can go on for ages. Easy to tell most posters in this thread are in their early 20's with their choices. Chuck D should be the most revered MC in history simply for his ability to get a story across and the impact that PE had on the hip hop community. LL Cool J is a freaking icon, but the younger cats here probably only know "Doing It" and maybe "Momma Said Knock You Out". Rakim is the end all and be all when it comes to MC's. Look at his structure, it's the same style that Nas brought back to create Illmatic (the single best hip hop album ever).
There are a lot of Rhymesayers and Ap/Celph fans in here, those guys are good too but overrated especially by the kids now. They're nothing crazy. Good, yes, but nothing groundbreaking. Now that my old man rant is finished, a few songs that are in my alltime favourite list:
If you don't like this then, well, quit listening to hip hop.

Probably my fav of all time would be Maestro Fresh-Wes (very underated IMO, had some dope stuff from the late 80's/early 90's aswell).
Rakim for sure would be up there, maybe even would top my list when I really think about it. Others I'd add: Guru. Kool G Rap, Gza/The Genius, LL in his early days was solid.
I'll end this post with some stuff from Maestro (he's canadian too!).

Have you suffered from severe brain trauma? Missy Elliot? No, maybe you can make a case that Timberland was one of the most prolific and influential producers in the 90's, but Missy? You realise of course that Missy Elliot discovered Timberland, he was her childhood friend and was her first producer. That without her there would be no Timberland, and that along with that she and he developed their talents together.

For you guys who like me enjoy him hop music. Please post your favorite music and giver your own two-cents on what you think of how hip hop has changed over the years and who you consider the best rappers of all time.
Still to this day Rap is my favorite music without question.
Top a top 10 for me has to be reflective by the evolution of rap, longevity, content and straight up flow on the mic.
A top 20 list is so subject to personal like and dislike.
Being that I don't care for most of the self indulgent rappers of today and that Crunk BS. Sorry just don't like it.
No particular order except these are top 5
Grand Master Flash and Furious 5
Beastie Boys
Run DMC
BDP/KRS 1
2 Pac
The rest of the top 20
Chuck D and PE
NWA (Dre, Cube, Eazy E, Ren, Yella etc)the origional Snoop came later.
LL Cool J
Ice T
Eric B and Rakim
Big Daddy Kane
Jay Z
Eminem
Notorious B.I.G
Snoop
DMX
Wu Tang (Method Man, Raekwon, Ghost Face Killah, ODB, RZA, GZA etc)
Kool Mo Dee
A tribe Called Quest
Geto Boys
I know no NAS, not that I don't think he was great. I think Jay Z has left him way behind. Its tough to leave Common or Busta Rhymes off this too.

Haven't seen it mentioned yet but one of the all time best hip hop bands was a little known group called The Goats. They were from Philadelphia and put out two records:
- Tricks of the Shade
- No Goats, No Glory
Saw them live in London in Camden Town years ago and they were unreal. They also toured with Bad Brains and on their second record, actually did some tracks with the Bad Brains. If you can find any of their stuff, it is well worth your time. One of the band members disappeared due to a drug problem and I think that contributed to the demise of the group.

The last line when he dissed Eminem's daughter Hailie who was still a little girl at the time pretty much determaned his fate. Eminem, D12 and Obie Trice released this song:
vmXTYu5Qvq0
He gets called out and destroyed in this song and Eminem didn't even have a verse. Ja Rule is not even in the top 50 of best rappers of all time. 2pac, Biggie, Nas, Eminem, KRS-One, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Jay-Z etc. are all better than Ja Rule will ever be.

Hailie's revenge is tight.
Proof don't crap in the same pool your swimming in.

Speaking of hip hop battles. How about Nas vs. Jay-Z
Jay-Z's Takeover:

vs.
Nas' Ether:

Jay Z has the riches, fame and the hits but rip on rip I give it to NAS.
They are both lyrical masters.

They are both lyrical masters While this is true i believe that Nas is a better Lyrical rapper and has more meaning behind his songs where as Jay-Z has better flow, style and hustle. Both of them are in my top 10 for sure though. Jay-Z especially revolutionized the way hip hop was viewed and became a CEO in the game. Nas never got the respect that he deserved especially since he dropped the best hip hop album of all time.

I hate these "ironic" covers. Maybe one was funny? ... now every time they are released I'm sure the singer thinks they're the cleverest #### alive.
That's a very good one though.

I am sick and tired of hearing that song.. my god it's the only thing played in my team's dressing room before our games. Of course the only parts the guys know are "BALL SO HARD, THAT #### CRAZY" and "What does that even mean?" "No one knows what it means, but it's provocative!" That part has nothing to do with the song! They say "Got my n****s in Paris, and they goin' gorillas" for #### sakes. Of course no one knows what it means, it's completely stupid! Arrrgh

For any fans of Masta Ace he is in town Mar 20th and Hilltops Hoods in town Mar 29th. And if you're not a fan of at least one of these two artists your taste in hip hop makes me sad.
