Relatively new in Calgary, this establishment boasts locally-sourced and organic ingredients (where possible) and no trans fats. Just bought a box today for the office and most people seemed pretty impressed.

I thought my doughnut, a vanilla dip, was a solid B+. A vanilla dip is what it is and probably doesn't have as high a top end as something exotic like the maple bacon offering. Of course, something like that could either be a huge hit or a giant whiff.

They seem to be following the cupcake model wherein they produce a bunch of comically-large, expensive sweets and sell them until supplies run out. They would do well to add a larger offering of mini (read: normal-sized) doughnuts.

If you have $5 in your wallet and feel like spending most of that on a giant fancy doughnut, do yourself a favor and give them a try.

If you've tried them, what did you think?

I'm guessing that this will take the place of the Cupcake fad?

Dunno....the price alone makes this silly (imo). Doesn't even matter if they're yummy.

That's totally insane.

Yes, until you've tasted them.

$2.25 for quite a large donut of such high quality doesn't seem too crazy to me. Consider what you pay for a tiny pastry at most coffee shops.

That's totally insane.

And the main reason why unhealthy food will remain the staple of most North Americans. The pricing on healthier food is just stupid and what causes many to simply eat crap. Because they can afford it.

Right. But you are missing the point. I posted this in response to my above post. I hate Tim Horton's. I would choose the healthier doughnut over Tim Horton's. I'm saying people won't because they either can't afford it, or don't want to pay for something that is healthier.

You're saying a doughnut from Modern Doughnuts is healthier than one at Tim Hortons? I don't know, man. I've seen them. They're pretty big and they're stuffed with all kinds of icings and fillings.

Well, the first post states no trans fats and organic ingredients so...

Canadians actually relish mediocrity. There is a "good enough" culture in Canada that likes to scorn those that seek greater quality.

Why do you think "latte-lifter" is a pejorative term? It symbols those urban elitists who think they're too good for their "timmies".

Trans fats are technically banned from all restaurants in Calgary. You won't find them at the other donut places either.

I would also be a lot more concerned about total calorie content than whether the food is "organic" or not.

Edit: nevermind, apparently that law is not really enforced, so Tim Hortons may contain some low levels of trans fats.

Oh, well as long as they use grain-fed icing and free-range dough...

(I think these things will kill you just as fast as any other doughnuts.)

I'd still like to see their nutritional information.

Perhaps, but they will be most likely perceived as healthier with the word organic attached to them. Just sayin'...

I'd be willing to pay $3.00 to try a donut that didn't taste like a piece of stale, greasy cardboard, for sure.

No way I'd buy a dozen of them though.

If they make them themselves and in house, then ~$2 for a donut isn't that bad. Tim Horton's donuts are absolutely awful now.

Since when did organic = healthy?

It is almost as bad as "natural". Hemlock is natural, but I wouldn't recommend eating it.

But they are buzz words to fool people into paying more. I think it is more proven by marketing than it is by medicine.

That's not what organic means. It has to be grown without pesticides and herbicides.

Also, the idea that organic food is healthier is right up there with "I'll get better gas mileage with premium gas."

Had a couple today, the maple-bacon and the PB&J. Delicious, although a bit sweet for my taste. Definitely better than the Timmy Ho's donut and like a previous poster said, about 50% bigger. Worth a shot.

What about their coffee? Do they serve any there? How good is it?

To me, a doughnut means nothing without a cup o' joe.

I have not tried this place out yet, and I love me some Glamorgan bakery cheese buns. If these doughnuts are half as good as voodoo doughnuts (http://voodoodoughnut.com/) from Portland, Oregon they will be worth trying. If you are ever in Portland I suggest you try them.

I only had a drip coffee there (C+, nothing special). After spending $25+ on a box of doughnuts, I inexplicably cheaped out on the joe.

They are definitely some good donuts. Not cheap, so it's more of an occasional treat, but sure beats the stale cardboard at Tim Hortons.

Does anyone else remember NewsRadio?

You know the episode where Phil Hartman loves those old sandwiches, and can't give them up? That's me with Tim Horton's chocolate glazed. No matter how much someone tells me how stale they are, how much they taste like cardboard.. I always go back to them. I love them so much.

I had one of the Jelly Modern Doughnuts today, I would be lying if I said that their donuts were great or memorable. Pretty lame dough with some sweet stuff on top. Not my cup of tea, at all. Service was below par.
I don't like donuts that much, but they appeared fancier than a Tim Hortons product yet more messy, expensive and not as good.
I rate Jelly Modern Doughnuts a solid 5.5/10.
