Win a FREE clock of your choice from COMO DESIGNS!

Spring is here, and Como Designs wants to give you a free clock! In honor of the arrival of spring I am going to be giving away a 100% unique clock! All you have to do is answer a question!

Here is how the contest will work.

Every week day for the next three weeks I will be posting a photo to Twitter (https://twitter.com/#%21/ComoDesigns) and the Como Designs Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Como-Designs/128261774932) page. In each of these photos my garden gnome will be featured at a mystery location. All you have to do is guess the name of that location and you will be entered into the contest!

The difficulty of the locations on the photos will range so you better be sharp!

There are two ways to enter:

Every day that I post a new photo to Twitter and Facebook you can enter once.

On Facebook you must hit “Like” before you can comment. Once that is done all you have to do is leave your guess in the comment section. Each guess will earn you one entry and every correct guess will give you five entries. If you “Share” the daily photo you will also earn five entries.

On Twitter you must follow Como Designs. Once you are following Tweet “@ComoDesigns” with your answer, this will earn you one entry.
If you RT the daily contest that will get you five more entries!

Each Photo will only be open for one day. I will then close the photo, reveal the answer and post a new one!

The contest will close and the winner will be chosen on April 13th 2012!

Full details on how to enter can be found here:

http://www.comodesigns.com/contest.html

I strongly encourage you to join the 'page' to keep up with what is happening with Como Designs to get this first views of new projects, artwork and contest details. Good Luck!!!

New contest photos will start at post #70

I just finished a run of 10 pieces last week, of which seven are already spoken for! I will be unveiling the different designs over the next two weeks. That said I will probably have to make another set up real soon based on the popularity. I have lots of different materials to work with and every piece ends up being 100% unique!

Thanks for looking.

Thank you Hoot, I really like the classy look of the black and white glass. That piece is actuallyon display at The Cushy Life in Kensignton, also note that piece is at The Cushy Life Prices! Much better deals through me than retail.

I also have three pieces from the Reticulation Series (Blue Red Green) at Domicile Interiors on 11th ave downtown.

Two questions:

1. Will you ship to the US?

2. Are the clocks silent? The sound of a clock ticking tends to send me into a murderous rage.

So what would something like that go for? There or through you? Also what are shipping costs to Victoria, BC like for something like that? I'm thinking it would be a lot and maybe when I'm out during the summer I can pick something up.

Answers:

1. Yes I will ship to the US, I haven't done it yet, I dont know how to but I will figure it out.

2. These clocks are not silent. That said I dont have much left for stock and my next set of clocks, which I will build on Monday, will all be equiped with the silent sweep hands.

It is funny you bring this up as the ticking has never bothered me and so I never thought twice about it but I have had a few people ask me this same question with the same reason - murdeous rage inducing ticking...

So in order to solve this problem for good, no more ticking mechanisms, all will be silent sweep. New run of clocks will be ready in 10 days.

My price for the Reticulation Series is $300/piece. These retail up to $600 in store. These pieces are 48" x 20" and can be mounted horizontally or vertically. I currently do not have any of these in stock but I will be doing up some new ones on Monday as I have just recieved an order. They will be ready in approx. 10 days.

Shipping would be approx $40 with Canada Post.

I've been working hard renovating my house this summer and I put up one of Dion's pieces the other day. This is the living room and I think the clock looks pretty sweet.

Thanks man, see you at the dome!

Nice, that looks really slick. I'm still waffling on getting one. I guess the biggest thing is, with these pieces all being so original looking, it takes time to find the one that would fit the best.

Thanks for the the kind words Flameswin. If you would like a catalog send me a PM, that way you can get an idea of what options exist. Furthermore if you would like to visit my studio I can show you first hand the large variety of glass, reclaimed wood and drift wood that I currently have. Lastly if you have an idea, I am positive that I can make it come to life for you, custom work pushes my limits which is a great thing!

Thanks for looking,

Was the drywall already like that Dion and you made the art to fit? Or did you have to redo that wall?

surferguy
04-30-2012, 01:49 PM
The wall already had the niche and paint colors in place. The client was looking for something to make the area stand out a bit more and this is what we came up with. She is very happy with the final look.

There are early talks of another large scale installation for this client. She is hoping for a piece that fuses the concepts of large scale crop circles and stained glass. I hope she decides to go ahead as it would large progressive step from my current work.

It would be a very cool evolution.

Hey guys,

Just wanted to share my latest furniture progression:

The Vibormo Desk:

This desk was commissioned for an advertising executive based in Calgary, Alberta. The desktop features a solid two inch thick slab of California Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) which is at least eighty eight years old.

The live edge slab required six butterfly (dutchman) keys in order to quell further migration of cracks within the slab. The keys are comprised of black walnut and serve as a fantastic visual that provide a vital function. The one inch over arced ends do nothing more than look cool.

The chrome tube sled legs were custom manufactured and provide both a solid base and enough visual interest to notice them but do not take away from the real focus, the desk top.

This desk was handcrafted by Dion Brake and is 100% unique.

Feel free to share the video on Facebook and such, I would love to get some exposure for this project as this is a direction I would love to take my company.

Anyway thanks for looking!

Cool.

Where did you source that cedar plank?

Thanks Clarkey,

The piece is actually California Redwood and I managed to scoop it up off the local Kijiji-Bot of all places.

There can be some gold hidden in those pages!

But I do know of a few people here in town that can source cedar/maple/fir slabs. I do hope to make more of these, I have some ideas of my own I would like to try out which would really make the wood slabs stand out even more.

Some day....

surferguy

How did you cut into the plank for the dovetail key?

I made a template for the bow tie out of 1/4 plywood, scribed with a knife for the blade width accuracy (pencils are too fat) onto a solid block of black walnut.

I then cut out the bow ties on the bandsaw and sanded out any chatter marks.

From there I took each cut bowtie and scribed onto the slab across the cracks. I then drilled down into the "removal area" with a forstner bit down to 7/8" in depth.

Next up a plunge router to the same depth and slowly cleaned out the removal area leaving about 1/32 - 1/16 from the scribe lines. I then finished up with a chisel cleaning out everything up to the scribe lines.

from here, slop on the glue to the necessary surfaces then smack it down using a sacrificial piece of wood and a hammer.

Once dried I used a belt sander, then random orbit and then a thickness sander to get a perfect finish.

Just a quick plug for my twitter feed as I am embarking on the next stage of a wine cellar I am building. I am posting photos while construction is going on if you are interested in seeing the process.

I am building a concrete encased room that will in the end look like a cave.

I am learning as I am going but these are the types of projects that you wish you get everyday. The room is currently boarded up with plywood and I should be starting to apply the diamond grid stucco lath today. Things will start taking shape soon!

Not sure if this is the spot for it, but I wanted to show off the work Dion finished up at my place last week.

The challenge I had for him was a 6 foot wall with an air return vent that I wanted turned into a wet bar. Dion matched up the cupboards to the "built-in" entertainment unit I already had on the opposite wall. The vent had to remain exposed but I wanted a sink and wine fridge and Dion made it all work great.

I'd highly recommend him to anyone looking to have some work done at their place. His prices are reasonable and work is top notch.
