Does anyone know anything about this place?

They had a float in the parade yesterday, and have sponsored one of the wagons in the Chuckwagon races. I had not heard of them prior to yesterday, but it sounds like a place I'd like to check out.

From what I have found on the internets, it's a Washington DC area based chain with locations around the US, and their first international location is supposed to open in Calgary this month.

One review I found says it is comparable to In-N-Out Burger, which I love.

It's also the chain that Barack Obama went to on his "burger run" with Brian Williams during the NBC "Inside the White House" special a couple of months ago.

Here's their website, which has no mention of the Calgary location: http://www.fiveguys.com

Anyone know where the Calgary location will be/is? Has anyone eaten there (either here or in the States)?

I haven't actually eaten there before, but I have friends who say it's pretty good. I've been planning to try it one of these days, I'll write a review if I get there in the next few days.

I'm not actually in Calgary, I'd be hitting one in the NYC area. No idea about the Calgary location.

Each store, which costs franchisees about $350,000 to $500,000 to build, generates about $1 million a year in sales. Each franchisee must have a net worth of $1 million and agree to open at least five stores, requirements that have been ratcheted up in recent years because of high demand.

Wow, must have a min of $1 million net worth and agree to open 5 stores to be a franchisee. Wonder who's opening it and wonder where the others will be. According to the same website, the Calgary location is opening this month... surprised I can't find the addy though. Got to love it though when American news outlets say Calgary in one of the articles and don't bother including "Alberta, Canada" or "150 miles north of Montana".

I tried one in Philly a few months ago. It was good. Tasted fresh, especially the fries. Lots of options for toppings too.

Especially since you know those same publications would say "Edmonton, Alberta (150 miles north of Calgary)" :D

Might have to give this place a try.

Yeah, one of their selling points is that they don't have freezers in any of their restaurants, so everything is fresh.

I think this can be somewhat exaggerated. Wendy's makes this claim as well. I know a guy who used to work there, and he said they don't freeze stuff, they just keep it very, very cold so the temperature in their fridge does not actually get below 0 degrees, but it stays around something like 2-5 degrees.

"Normal" freezer temp is -17 degrees Celsius, so that's true. The meat is very cold at 2-5 degrees, but the moisture doesn't crystalize.

Another forum I visit was recently debating about good fast food places, and Five Guys was the recipient of the following comments:

"Hell yeah. Five Guys is great. I just feel like I'm gonna die after I eat there."

"Five Guys has awesome burgers. A little more expensive than normal fast food, but yeah, I was impressed when I ate there."

"I find myself at Five Guys all the time. They give you so many ******* fries. You can get a small or large cup of fries, but it's best to just get the small cup because they just stuff the entire goddamn bag full anyway."

"Five Guys started out in the DC metro area, and they're expanding pretty rapidly. Always go for the small fries since they are about 2 orders of large fries from the major burger joints. Plus, they are thick fries, not the crappy shoestring ******** fries that McDonald's serve and I usually go for the Cajun seasonings too.

For their burgers, I also go for just the small cheeseburger and load up on toppings (there's a selection of about 20 to choose from) and/or I'll get a grilled cheese and add grilled onions/mushrooms, tomato, and BBQ sauce. Best part of the grilled cheese is that it's made with a burger bun that has been turned inside out."

So there's some info from people of questionable character who have frequented a Five Guys.

The burgers are a little overpriced, but everything there is delicious. The first time I ever ate there was at the airport in DC, and I'd heard such good things that I had to try it even though it was 7 am. The burger with a fried egg and hot sauce on it was one of the best and worst breakfasts I've ever had. Thankfully, I've never seen any other Five Guys open before lunch time, because I'm not sure that I could stop myself from trying that again.

Its pretty simple actually. Wendy's cows are genetically modified for easy moving and storage. Hence the square patty. Like this, but in living cow form.

Fat Burger is a huge waste of cash.

5 Guys has great burgers and fries - nothing is ever frozen and everything is super fresh. Plus you get all you can eat peanuts for free! Prices are reasonable. I've only ever tried it in the States but can't wait for them to come here.

OT but Peter's Drive In quality has REALLY diminished since it was sold. I used to go every couple of weeks and after every Flames game back in the day...Burgers are not the same tasting (still good, though) but the new fry boxes suck! Sorry for the rant...5 guys burger and fries is great!

Yay! Corporate shills on CP!

J/K Sounds like it might be worth a try. How does pricing compare with Fat Burger. Personally, $35 at a burger joint is a little steep IMO for two adults and 2 kids unless it's tthe best burger ever. I think Fat Burger is priced about a buck or a buck and a half too high per combo for the quality of the food. (but they do have wicked lemonade)

So, by a process which I like to call "math" - a process that I sadly neglected to employ earlier in this thread, as was pointed out to me - I deduce that this place must be opening around Labour Day, and so I would think that the actual physical premises must be nearly ready. So has anyone seen the place yet, or know where it is located?

I'm thinking I might go to the grand opening and try to be the first guy to be sold a Five Guys burger in the city. I'm pretty sure the chicks'll be all over me like stink on an Oilers fan after that - what girl WOULD'NT want to be with a ground-breaking gourmet of that caliber?

A few of my buddies are opening a burger restaurant (going to be delicious) downtown.

LoungeBurger

As seen on the Macleod Trail side of the pedestrian level of OPUS's Stampede Station building at 1331 Macleod Trail SE (directly East of the Nuera development and in the same building as ATB): COMING SOON - loungeburger.

The concept will be "a gourmet "build your own" burger restaurant/lounge" and will also have "appys, sliders, desserts and some select entrees".
They currently plan on opening in mid-September.

Should be good place before flames games.

Still nothing from my spies on the 5 Guys locale. I think it was all a hoax. I have enough hate now for 500 Guys, never mind 5.

It's like they took my burgerlicious dream - a wholesome, wonderful thing - and they twisted it into a 30 second radio jingle for flavoured condoms voiced over by Gary Glitter. All that's left are the sad paper wrappings; covered not with ketchup and mustard, but some unidentifiable sauce left by a diaper-wearing pervert.

I think this is even worse than when my dad admitted he was Santa Claus. It took me a while, but when I realized that therefore my mother was an adultress, and I was no doubt a b@stard - I cried and cried. Knowing that they'd probably offed Mrs. Claus and left her rotting body for the scavenging polar bears - even more devastating.

Some Christmas that was. Yet this is more than just Christmas being ruined:

This.. Is.. LUNCH!

I was at the one in Medicine Hat last week. It's in the new "power center" (gag) development out by the new superstore and WalMart.

You go in and it's a stark white/red ceramic tiled place that screams burger joint. Kind of reminded me of a McD's from the 80's. Definately not like a new Moxies / Earls lounge type of place. They have baskets of peanuts available and you can toss shells onto the tiled floor.

The best thing about these guys is easily the fries. They used peanut oil and the cajun fries are seasoned heavily. Crispy, fresh, and the "regular" sized is pretty much an entire brown lunch bag full of them. Wickedly awesome. The "5 guys fries" is just salted fries... there is not special seasoning of them or anything.

Burger is.....OK. I suppose if you like your burgers fried on a flattop (like McD's used to do) you might like it more that I did. I'm a flame broiled kind of guy and would take a Harvey's burger any day of the week. Portions were ridiculous as you might expect. A great thing is the topping options - sauteed mushrooms and onions were among the many choices.

It's not super cheap. 2 burgers, and 2 fries, 1 drink came to about $20. All ingredients are fresh - there are no freezers on site. Patties and fries are all made from scratch. Kudos to them for that - and you can taste the difference.

Since I was on my way to Saskatoon, a perfect comparison was Fuddruckers. Burgers were about the same IMHO, 5Boys get the nod for the superior fries (didn't have Fuddruckers' nacho cheese though!)

One thing's for sure, if this is what some Americans are eating on a weekly / daily basis, I can see why there's a national obesity epidemic. You roll out of the joint stuffed.

According to my receipt, whoever's the franchisee...lives at Heritage Pointe in DeWinton.

It says "opening soon" on the website. "Soon" could mean tomorrow, or 2011 for all we know. I should go do a recon of the area to see what's up.

My one and only Fatburger experience was horrible. I paid a crap load for a dry burger that was average at best. Not impressed.

Not once have I had a bad 5 Guys Burger and Fries experience. When I'm in the States, I make a point of going to one of their locations and I know I will making excuses to get to the Calgary location.

Just texted a a buddy who's the manager here in Lethbridge. Looks like construction delays have set the opening in Lethbridge back until at least Nov. 30th.

If anybody in Lethbridge is wondering, it will be located by the southside walmart closer to where East Side Mario's is/was.

I was down in Deerfoot Meadows last night and did a drive by of the store. That's exactly where it is. It's in the same building as the Sony Store and EB Games and the Petland store is right beside it. It's in the northeast corner of the Deerfoot Meadows complex and not really close to the other restaurants in the mall. Fatburger is probably the closest other food location.

It looks like there's still a lot of work to be done inside. I'm a horrible judge of how long things like that take, but I'd be very surprised if it isn't at least a couple of weeks before it's ready to go.

Went to Five Guys here in NYC for the frst time yesterday, and while it's good it wasn't anything all that special. It's a fast food burger, and while better than what you get at other fast food places it's still a fast food burger. I'm not sure what the prices will be in Calgary, but for another $5 here I could have picked up a big juicy burger with irish bacon and sauteed onions at the pub around the corner (with a free drink on sundays!!). I do highly recommend that you get the jalapenos if you like a little spice, they're fresh not pickled and add a nice bite to the burger.

to get your grub on, ate at the one in Med hat and in Kalispell MT. $13.79 for cheese burger, fries lrg coke. They give you way too many fries; they fill the container and then dump a pile into your bag so share an order with your date and that's just the regular size. All the burgers are doubles, unless you get the baby? its a single. The burgers are the best fast food around I think it in the cheese.

I went to the Deerfoot Meadows one today.

You can get a double or single burger, with any combo of bacon and cheese (as mentioned the cheese is great, I highly recommend it.) The bun taste fresh-baked, and soaked up all the nice juices.

You get the rest of your toppings Subway style, but it's all done at the till when you order. Thats also when they fire a fresh burger on the grill up.

From what I remember you can choose from:
ketchup
mustard
mayo
relish
lettuce
tomato
onion
jalapeno (fresh, not pickled)
grilled onion
grilled mushrooms
bbq sauce
A1 sauce
hot sauce
For fries you can get regular or cajun flavour. I had the cajun ones, which were really good. NY Fries quality. I think they cut all the potatoes fresh so that helps alot.

You order your burger, fries, and drink separately - no combos. The fountain pop wasn't carbonating properly so I got Fruitopia.

Overall the food was a really delicious, and I would recommend going at least once to try. Maybe stick to the single if you go at lunch, I had a double and it's pretty filling.

A bit pricey, but the quality was there. They also have tubs of peanuts that you can eat at your table if you want - a nice touch. Lots of seating too.

4.5/5 stars

I am here right now waiting, so excited! A tad pricey but I am expecting good things for $8.50.

Edit: Ok, so now that I am eating it. wowza, I got the bacon cheeseburger, and for $8.50 I'd say it is a pretty good deal. I didn't realize it was a double, and the cheese is excellent (and there is tons of it I might add). The bacon actually tastes fresh unlike a fast food joint.

As for the fries, better than NYF. First of all, for $3.50 you get A LOT of fries, I mean a lot. You get the box of fries, plus the guy dumps another box into the bag for good measure.

For $12, I'd say it is a good deal and worth the extra $3 than what you'd pay at say Wendy's for a baconator combo.

Went Friday night and I was pretty impressed. Made the rookie mistake of getting too much stuff on the burger. Made for a pretty big mess. Next time I'll reign in those toppings, eliminate the tomatoe and go for simple elegance in my burger. Fries are awesome too. 5 Guys delivers way more value for an expensive fast food burger than cruddy Fat Burger. It kinda fills the niche that Fuddrucker's had. If only they had pump cheese sauce...

The first time I went was on a Saturday mid afternoon. Waited for 20 minutes to get my food. Then you are all scrunched together, very loud.

I went all the way with my burger, which as you might expect, got a little messy. So I didn't get a chance to taste much of the meat.

Lots of fries, almost a waste to even order them. Very fresh, but there were too many overcooked ones in there. I like fresh fries lightly cooked, fast food ones should be the only ones cooked that much.

Overall, wasn't that excited about it. I ended up going again yesterday so it wouldn't be busy, and I only got lettuce, tomato and mayo. I still had a hard time tasting the burger though.

Better price and better tasting fries than Fat Burger, but they tie on the burgers and Fat Burger wins on atmosphere.

Went there tonight. Burger was awesome but super messy. Had the regular bacon cheeseburger. I think they need a more substantial bun to hold that thing together, but then again, I'm not sure any bun would keep that burger all in one piece.

The fries were absolutely ridiculous for portion size. Good fries, way too much. Not sure what their goal is with the excessive fries but the waste they must create by giving people that many fries is probably insane.

All that being said, I recommend it :D

Yeah I was at 5 guys in Pocatello Idaho this summer and they had a massive amount of fries as well. I saw them scoop up the fries in the container, dump them in the bag, then fill up the container again and put that in the bag. So really you're getting 2 orders in 1!

Went there last weekend and the lineup was quite long. Standing their with my receipt that had #87 on it while hearing the guy yell out "Number 62!", gave me flashbacks of trying to register my car back when the only place to do it was down in Bowness.

Burgers were great, just need to remember to keep the sauces down to a minimum. The fries were great and ya they give you a lot but remember you are paying for it. At $4.25, I'd be pretty pissed if all I got was that small container they put the fries in. By dumping a bunch of fries into the bag, it gives the perception of getting something for free when in reality we've already paid for the majority of the excess.

We have a few 'Five Guys' in the Kansas City suburbs, one just opened near my house. The food is *very* greasy and the burgers are a lot like Culver's. Some of my friends rave about it but it's just okay if you ask me. There are better places to eat a good 'specialty' or 'gourmet' burger, like BRGR or 'Burgers and Bottles.'

I don't get what you're trying to say here, is the "B" metropolitan area Sherwood Park, or Calgary? Because Sherwood Park makes sense for that analogy, but I think both locations are actually really good locations, Calgary's is great at least I think because so many people take the Deerfoot and can just jump off it on the way home, easy access for thousands of people. It's like how they put the one in Vancouver in North Van, just off of the Lions gate bridge, tons of traffic will drive right past it everyday.

That being said, I don't think I'll be going back a third time simply because I found it too expensive.

For me, I'd rather pay $3 extra for a burger and fries for a damn good burger rather than a Baconator (which is my favorite fastfood burger), to me it was worth it. The Baconator combo is $9 compared to $12 at Five Guys (with no drink though). I totally understand what you mean though.

Went today for our first experience - almost had to drag the hubby because there was small line up. Well he has been very grateful to me ever since and thought it was a great burger. I had the veggie and cheese sandwich and it was lip smackingly amazing. Good fries - big portions.

I was there today and the lineup was crazy (it was during the 2nd period of the Flames game). Not a place to sit down anywhere and there were about 20 other orders ahead of mine. Very good burger though.

I went on Thursday with my wife and kid - wife was rather unimpressed ("yeah, it was ok"), but my kid inhaled his burger and a good chunk of the fries. I liked the taste of the burger, and the choice of toppings is pretty great too.

I'll definitely go back. My kid will be happy at least!

This is why I sneak in a bottle of Dr Pepper when I go (this will be harder in the summer), that and their burgers and fries are amazing with Dr Pepper, moreso than the Coke products they have.

That picture looked amazing. I knew one opened in Lethbridge, but I subsequently forgot. I'm going to have to check this out in a couple of weeks. Currently on a diet as part of my training for a half marathon, but I usually lighten up for the weekends, and if I'm going to eat "bad" food, it might as well be as delicious as possible!

Finally got a chance to try Five Guys for lunch.

Lineup at Airdrie was decent for 12:30, plenty of seating. Couldn't decide on toppings, so I just went with a little bacon cheese w/ "everything" less tomato, small fries, and a drink. Will definitely be going back to try the cajun fries, and get more adventurous with the toppings.

Went once, absolutely hated it. Burger was bland at best, made the make of ordering a cheeseburger. Whatever that was, was not cheese. I don't get the hype for this place at all, hell, I'd even choose a Whopper over that rubbish.

Like the burgers, but I despise processed cheese slices.

I usually order one without cheese, bring it home and put a slice of real cheese on it....yum.

Went to 5 guys when i was in phoenix a few weeks ago. First time I'd been to one. My reaction? meh.

Perhaps it's because in the area where I live we have a lot of Steakburger and Custard places that make very good burgers so 5 guys wasn't anything special. I prefer Culver's, Freddy's and Steak 'n Shake burgers. I'll stick with Culver's Bacon and Cheddar Butterburger. However, I can see that in Calgary (where I used to live for many many years) it would be better than almost any other fast food joint.

What Calgary really needs is a Chipotle. I might visit family more if one opened up there ;)

I have been to the one in Airdrie a couple times now. I think its the best burger around. The fries have to be the best I have ever had. Love them.

The atmosphere kind of stinks. All the tables and chairs so close together. Makes it hard for the staff to keep the place clean as well. Although it isn't any dirtier than the average fast food place here in Alberta.

i have now been to five guys twice - my impression is that it is above average.

the fries are outstanding and i wish more places could serve them like that.

i would rate my burger as bland. perhaps it was my selection of toppings (i like tomato, extra pickles, mayo & bbq sauce), but the last half of the bun was a little soggy by the time i got around to eating it. i also need to read the menu a little closer, but i need to figure out how to only order a burger with one patty, as both times i inadvertently ordered something with two patties.

Anyways, the wife and i went, we each had a burger, drink and shared fries and the bill was almost $25......we could have had a couple of cupckaes/organic donuts for that much.....

i guess i'd go back, but i'd walk, not run to get there.......

I'd say the mini burger was much more satisfying than the double since you could eat the burger and all the toppings at once rather than dislocate your jaw to bite it. Although i alawys seem to load up on everything.

The thing i like most is how fresh and generous the tomatoes / pickles / lettuce onions seem compared to most other places i've been. even a bruger at like moxies seems to have a pretty thin tomatoes and lettuce.... mind you the talent working at moxies is much more appealing.

Just had Five Guys down in the US, and I now notice there is one thing missing up here: fresh brewed iced tea. I ordered my burger with cajun fries and went over to the beverage area and had my choice of 4 different fresh brewed teas to put on ice. The iced green with lemon was an amazing complement to the meal. (I still had a splash of coke after to fight the grease a bit)

I had Five Guys in Missoula last week. The burger was very good, the regular fries were very good, but I was not impressed by the Cajun fries at all. I'm not sure if there was too much flavor, or if there's just too much cayenne or what exactly I didn't like about them. I know Cajun, and those fries didn't seem "Cajun" to me at all. I doubt I'll order them again.

I took my son to Fatburger in Seattle yesterday, the burger was very good, as well. I never thought I'd say this, but it was perhaps a but too greasy... The fries were great, you have your choice of steak fries, or regular size french fries.

If I had to choose between burgers only, Five Guys is the winner by a nose.

which is why i hate our ice tea, i wish we would follow the State's lead on this one. any ice tea you get in a restaurant or can here is just too damn sweet. the best i've found is the Tetley pre-made stuff you can buy at Safeway. it has about 1/3 of the sugar that Nestea does, but even then i'd still prefer something with zero sugar. i've tried brewing my own but it's just to big of a pain in the ass

Stick it in the Bow/West and you'd be laughing all the way to the bank, stick it further east than the Telus building and its a write off

I can't stand Fatburger. The time I went there I was at the cash register next to my buddy and when the guy yelled out his order - he yelled 'BIG TIP' and the crew all says "Thank you." Well of course my order goes out next - with a resounding silence after the order and everyone looks at me like I'm the Elephant Man. I had no idea it was a tipping type place - I thought it was like Harvey's or Wendy's or something because of the ordering style. So yah - Fatburger can get bent.

That has to be a typo (on their site). 733 MacLeod Trail SE would put it on the east side of Olympic Plaza, directly across from old City Hall. There is no retail space between 7th Ave and 8th Ave there. Unless they got approval to put in a temporary food kiosk.

I found 5 Guys to be good but not great. Tried the Airdrie location.

Fatburger isn't the greatest. I find them to be like cheap put burger quality.

5 guys is good for what it is. It's more "fast food" style. But not the greatest I agree. It's expensive, but you get a ridiculous amount of food. Even a value meal at Wendy's is $8-$10.00 these days, so I still find 5 guys pretty solid value.

so i tried FGBF for the first time today finally, and frankly i was underwhelmed. $13.50 for a cheeseburger, fries, and a coke, and it wasn't that much better than anywhere else. Rocky's has a better burger for cheaper, so i'm sticking with that

Rocky's is better for sure. I was there on Monday around 1:30 and they were closed, though...is that normal?
