View Full Version : CASH for your Air Miles???

MJK

Who would sell their Air Miles for cash???

I live in Nunavut and the cost of flying here is massively high. I constantly try and use points every time I fly and it is well worth it for me to do so.

For example:
Rankin Inlet, NU to Deer Lake, NL return is about $3500. SICK.

I just chatted with an Air Miles representative and she tells me that the following is an option:

You can transfer your air miles to my account but only if you close your own account. BUT, the best part is you can create a new account and start again. Obviously this will only be good for those who want CASH for their miles. I know a ton of people have Air Miles but will never use them. IN FACT, I am willing to pay enough cash to cover most regular flights anyways. It will benefit us both!

If anyone is willing to sell their points for cash PLEASE let me know. I can't afford to pay $7000 every xmas for my fiance and myself to visit my family. Points are well worth it for me and I hope we can work something out.

THANKS!

how many points do you need per flight?

MJK

To get from Rankin Inlet to Winnipeg I am looking at 2700 Miles in peak season. That only gets me half way to my destination and I always travel with my fiance.

I would like to obtain as many miles as possible and will pay cash to get them. In the long run it works out way better for me and I am sure some people out there would prefer cash over miles!

How much are you proposing to pay for each air mile?

MJK
04-22-2009, 07:09 AM
I am willing to pay .15 cents/mile. You can buy miles for .30 cents when you purchase a ticket so if you would rather cash instead of an extra plane ticket I will give you .10 cents/mile for it.

3000 miles X .10 = $300
10,000 miles X .15 = $1000

An IPod shuffle would cost you 780 miles to buy. Would you rather an Ipod shuffle (which costs like $25) OR 780 X .10 = $78?

Wait a sec, if it's 0.30 per mile, and you need 2700 miles (5400 return), why don't you just keep buying them? That's only $1620.00 for a $2700.00 flight.....

Or is there some silly restriction saying you can't purchase the total amount?

You have to have at least half of the airmiles required for the flight in order to use the $0.30 per mile buying option.

Well I can buy miles at .30 cents and it is cheaper than paying full fare for the flights.

BUT I just wanted to throw this out there in case there was anyone sitting on a ton of Air Miles and would prefer to get cash for them.

Air Miles are worth more to me than most people.

how would you secure the transaction?

Well some people on this site can vouch for me. I have met Jiri Hrdina, KG, Halifax Drunk for example, and I am sure one of those fine gentlemen know I wouldn't burn anyone. I slept on KG's couch one night over xmas and we even had a romantic dinner date of late night pizza (I think that's what we ate, too many beers that night)...:)

I will also provide personal phone numbers and adresses. ALSO, I will be in Calgary June 15th for about a month so I would be more than willing to meet in person.

I would only send the money after I recieve the points. Feel free to check with some of the above posters who have at least met me before.

It doesn't matter where you live. I can send you money worldwide and you can send me points online.

The only catch is you will transfer you points to my account, cancel your account and then create a new one if you want to start collecting again.

Why not have the person just use the AIRMILES to get you the ticket(s) instead of transfering you the points and you pay them for said ticket(s). This way they would not have to cancel their account.

Because most people do not have enough points enough for 2 people to fly, that is why I am looking to combine points.

I need about 11,000 points to fly two people.

Oh, and I'll gladly sell you my points. I'm a poor student who can't pay his bills so any $$ would be awesome. Can't imagine I have more then a 1000 points, but they are all yours. Unfortunately the airmiles site is down right now, so I can't check.

Just out of curiosity MJK, how much do you have to pay on top of the 11,000 AM in tax, fees, etc.? We used AM this year to go to Puerto Vallarta. It cost us just over 7000 AM but we still had to pay $600 tax, fees etc. Still a pretty cheap airfare for 2 people return.

I was going to see what I had in air miles, and help you out. Since march 2000 when I got the card I have accumulated a whopping......wait for it........38 air miles! So not much sense transferring all those. I did just learn yesterday oddly enough about buying things online through the airmiles site to collect airmiles, so I should accumulate them much quicker, so could probably help you out in the future. Wish I'd known about this sooner, as I've spent hundreds of dollars in shops listed on the site like amazon and sears, but sadly got no airmiles from it.

But like I said, if needed in the future I'll probably be able to help out.

MJK
06-06-2009, 12:07 PM
What is worth more, cash or a plane ticket? You can use cash for anything but a plane ticket for only one, to fly. On airmiles.ca 2400 miles will get you a set of oven mitts probably whereas I will pay $360 cash.

For $1000 I can buy a plane ticket without using points and save myself the $250 fee.

Booking flights and getting cash are two very different things. There is a very good reason why airmiles doesn't give you cash back for your miles becuase it just does not make sense.

I am looking for people who who usually do not fly and would rather take cash then waste their points on stupid magazine subscriptions or oven mitts.

For people that fly the deal isn't as good I guess.

What about aeroplan miles

MJK
06-06-2009, 12:14 PM
What about aeroplan miles

I have so many aeroplan miles I will never use them all. The biggest reason is becuase I live in the middle of nowhere and it is impossible to get aeroplan seats for peak times like xmas. Aeroplan points are also much easier to accumulate than airmiles are however I have quickly learned that airmiles are much better for me booking flights out of here.

06-07-2009, 01:56 AM
AP points arent transferable anyways....but speaking of Aeroplan, when is the last time you tried to book something with them??
for sacrificing around 25% more points (dont quote me on that exact number), there are no blackout dates and you can actually even bump a paying pax from thier seat....give it a whirl if you havent tried AP in awhile

You can convert your aeroplan points to airmiles. Points.com allows you to transfer them to HBC rewards, and then you can transfer your hbc rewards to airmiles at the HBC website.

LOOKING FOR MILES AGAIN: I made 4 transactions and have a 100% feedback rating! LOL

I am willing to pay .15 cents/mile. You can buy miles for .30 cents when you purchase a ticket so if you would rather cash instead of an extra plane ticket I will give you .15 cents/mile for it.

3000 miles X .15 = $450
10,000 miles X .15 = $1500

An IPod shuffle would cost you 780 miles to buy. Would you rather an Ipod shuffle (which costs like $50) OR 780 X .15 = $117.

So, who wants cash for their Air Miles?

MJK
01-20-2010, 09:59 PM
I have another transaction int he works. Not only do you get better value for your miles than you would buying stuff from the air miles store, you are helping out a fellow CalPuck member who likes to travel home in the Summer and Xmas but can't always do so becuase of how expensive flights are here.

A return flight costs me about $3500 so airmiles help a lot!

.15 cents per mile is a good deal, but if you use air miles to get 2 for 1 passes for movies, the value is a lot higher than 15 cents - it's more like 50 cents.

Not to mention that I have to spend at least $20 at Safeway to get one mile. I also get them for every $40 I spend on credit or debit. So if I'm buying them at $20 and selling them at 0.15, that works out to something along the lines of a 94% loss.

You are thinking of it the wrong way.

You are going to spend that money regardless if you are getting points or not. You don't "buy" those points you are getting them for free when you shop.

It's spend $20 and get a free air mile

OR

Spend $20 and get .15 extra

Here, I have taken the following example from the airmiles store:

An Ipod touch is $199 to buy anywhere
It costs 3300 miles from the airmiles store
3300 miles gets you $345 with me

Would you rather an ipod touch or $345?

If you like your miles keep them. If you like cash I am willing to give it. If cash was such a good deal, air miles would be writing cheques instead of making you get other stuff.

+1. No different than the cashback cards. Sure, I only get 2% back from using my amex, but that's 2% back from what I was spending anyways.

We just got a dyson and some other gear for doing nothing but buying gas, goceries, and other items we were already purchasing. Not a bad ROI, in my opinion.

It also depends what you trade them in for. Ski passes, it works out to about $0.25/mile. Gift cards, about $0.10.

I'd take you up on this offer, but my miles are tied to my M/C which is tied to my company discount, so closing the account would be a real PITA. My wife has some in her maiden name she hasn't transferred over yet. There's not a lot there (about 600), but may be worth it as we have to close her account anyways if we transfer them to mine. I'll ask her if she's interested.

Thought I'd post this up in the thread, as it somewhat relates:

So I attempted to book flights with my trusty air miles yesterday only to be told there are NO FLIGHTS within 15 days of when i wanted to book, this is unheard of. Then I was told the amount of miles to fly is going up next week and that everyone has been busy booking up to a year ahead of time.

Bottom line: More miles are now needed to fly. It is more difficult to book for the next year becuase everyone is going crazy trying to dump their points now.

I will still willing to wait this all out and am still interested in buying airmiles.

BUT if you were holding onto yours and were planning to use them on flights, you should do it NOW before the rates go up and all the flights are booked.

Good luck!

I must admit the taxes are not nice and just another reason why selling the miles to me might be the best option for some.

It works for me only becuase flights are so expensive out of the North. If I were anywhere else I would not be buying miles like this.

sold my airmiles to mjk and got paid.

Yet another successful transaction! Thanks to liquidpill. We had a little difficulty getting it done becuase he does not have online banking but Paypal to the rescue.

That brings the total of happy customers to 8 I believe.

Keep the miles coming! I have cash to burn.

Buying is on HOLD right now. I might be taking a new job that is out of the North. Also, there is currently a new airline coming here that is causing massive seat sales! I should know more in a couple weeks if I am leaving or not.

Any update on this MJK? Did you stop buying?

Air Miles are worth more to me than most people.

Correction, what MJK means to say is:
"I don't really need Airmiles, but I suppose I could take them off your hands. I guess. Would be a huge favor though, as nobody really wants them these days. You owe me one!"

Still on hold. I would love to buy more because I need them. But I took a new job, wife is only working half time and a kid in daycare.

I really can't afford it right now but as soon as things turn around I would love to buy more.

Hi all,

I am willing to buy airmiles again but because of new regulations, increased taxes I am only willing to spend 0.10 cents per mile otherwise it is just not worth it for me.

If that works for you then great, if not that's OK.

PM if interested. Thanks.

Looks like Airmiles figured out your "scheme" (I use quotes cause I actually think what you are doing is brilliant).

It now costs $0.15 per mile to transfer between customers... which doesn't make transferring miles worth it anymore.

Edit: Actually the way they word it on the website makes it seem like they stole the idea right from this thread

They make it sound like they are doing everyone a favor when $0.15/mile is more the the points are worth in the first place.
