I am craving one but don't know of any good places to go. Suggestions? I am in the NW, but don't mind driving.

Not Boston Pizza.

Fast food wise, I've always like KFC's poutine, except in Lethbridge.

Loco Lous was a staple during my time at SAIT. Two years ago it was $6 or so for a giant plate with lots of cheese and gravy.
Haven't been back since though.

ok, ok,....I get it

KFC scares me. Especially the one in Parry Sound where I suspect it should be renamed KFS.

If you're looking for fast food chain poutine, it's hard to beat New York Fries for it.

Go to the Burger Inn my friend, 9669 MacLeod Trail SW, Calgary - (403) 252-4840.

Fries, gravy, cheese, sauteed onions and bacon

Best poutine I have ever had anywhere, but my arteries hate me for it.

Try it at least once, you won't be sorry

EDIT: Just noticed that you are in the NW, there are some closer to you, but I don't know if the menu is the same.

Not crazy at all. I hate BK but I love their poutine. When I was in my first year at the U of A I could use my meal card at the BK on campus... in my 2nd semester I had it for lunch at least 3 times a week... until one day my heartbeat slowed down to 3 frail beats/minute. After that I slowed it down to a couple times a year.

Has anyone else been asked if they want to "poutinize" their combo? They have (or had) it at Harveys a while ago.

Me: "I'll have combo number 3 with fries and an ice tea"
Pimply faced kid working at Harvey's: "Is that to stay or to go?"
Me: "To stay"
Pimply faced kid working at Harvey's: "Sir, would you like to POUTINIZE your combo for $0.99?"
Me: "huh?"

Thumbs down to New York Fries poutine. They just put shredded mozzarella and gravy on top of fries. That does not make a poutine.

For fast food, I'll take A&W.

Italian Poutine (replace gravy with marinara sauce) is also delicious, if you can find it anywhere.

I went to NYF today and they put the curds on it, not shredded. Although it was too expensive and didn't even fill the cup, but I think it tastes better than A&W, I like NYF gravy more than A&W's, but A&W puts more cheese on it.

I used to work for NY fries when I was a teenager, we were the first to bring poutine into a lot of Canada and we used and still do real cheese curds.

The original NYF one is really good, I know back then some customers bought poutine but put KFC gravy over it, tried that once and thought it was quite good.

District on 11th Ave does "gourmet" poutine.

http://enjoydistrict.com/about-2/our-food/

We like poutine. Poutine for the People! Choose your size (S, M, L), choose your toppings (pan seared mushrooms, gruyere cheese, sour cream, fresh tomatoes, sliced jalapenos, bacon, chicken breast, duck leg confit, a fried egg, a porkchop!) Voila! Perfect as a starter, a main, or for sharing.

Cafe Metro on Macleod used to be good, but they closed down a while ago. Not sure if they moved somewhere else, or just packed up. Best smoked meat in town, and their poutine and sugar pies were excellent too.

Bob, I know you live down south, but if you want your wife's American cousin to try poutine, you have to take them to Alberta King of Subs and at least let them try some authentic poutine first. Or even go all out and try the poutine at the District. I haven't tried the district, but it looks damn good! Just don't take them to fast food joints like KFC, A&W or BK (even though I like BK's) before trying real poutine.

Well considering I am from Montreal...

The farmers market cheese curds are delicious but you can find Saputo cheese curds at most grocery stores.

Although I have never done it, it's easy to make your own. Heat milk till its scalded, add lemon juice, set aside for a couple hours, strain through cheese cloth, salt, hang in cloth for a few hours, pull apart cheese into curd sized bits and enjoy. On second thought...

Springbank curds are merely OK. Not the same as what you’d find in Ontario (fresh from Quebec) or Quebec. They rarely squeak when you chew them.

The Taste of Quebec ones are closer, but still not as fresh as they truly need to be.

There used to be a place in Sylvan Lake called the Western Canada Fry Company I believe, we used to stop there on our way home from ice fishing and they made a bad ass Poutine. It would go home cut fries, cheese curds & gravy and repeat for 2 more layers. They got their cheese curds shipped in from Quebec as well as their gravy. For an extra $6 you could get a double bacon cheese burger with a fried egg and gravy on it.

I hope that place is still around Im drooling now.

I think baked fries are better too. Deep fried ones are too crunchy for a poutine, then again with the gravy they soften up, but baked is definitely better.

I need to find a good gravy (whether it is packed or a recipe). Anyone know a strong beef gravy recipe? I have a bunch of packs of "brown" gravy, but it isn't that good for poutine.

I know what I am doing after school tomorrow.

That was awesome, although nowhere near as good as King of Subs.

I wonder if Safeway still sells curds. I went looking for some a few years back and couldn't find any. I don't imagine they were a big seller.

Edit: On a side note... I've heard of a place in Quebec called St. Hubert, and their sauce is supposed to be better than Swiss Chalet. Is this true?

The Safeway downtown does sell cheese curds - we pick them up there all the time - I think we get them near the deli counter/bakery. I've heard that they don't squeek once they're refrigerated, so it's tough to find ones that do squeek unless you can find a dairy that sells to the public.

St. Hubert's sauce is better than Swiss Chalet. They also make a Poutine gravy mix that is AMAZING. And vegetarian to boot! We pick up St. Hubert packages at the cheese place in Crossroads Farmer's Market.

Two best places I've been are La Banquise in Montreal and Fritz in Vancouver. Not a huge fan of toppings though... Just straight fries, cheese curds and gravy!

I need to find a good gravy (whether it is packed or a recipe). Anyone know a strong beef gravy recipe? I have a bunch of packs of "brown" gravy, but it isn't that good for poutine.

I know what I am doing after school tomorrow.

A Taste of Quebec also sells poutine gravy packages.

I'm getting a craving for poutine after reading this thread...

Awesome, thanks!

I haven't been to Crossroads in a while...

I was a fry cook at St Huberts on Macleod Tr in the 1980s. The sauce was good - more salty than the sweet Swiss Chalet sauce. What are these packages they are selling at the market?

I wonder if Safeway still sells curds. I went looking for some a few years back and couldn't find any. I don't imagine they were a big seller.

I've seen them in the little fridge cabinet next to the deli at several stores. They're expensive, though, and not all that great. Maybe I'm spoiled since I'm from Ottawa and they used to sell the great ones from Quebec at Walmart and Giant Tiger.

Edit: On a side note... I've heard of a place in Quebec called St. Hubert, and their sauce is supposed to be better than Swiss Chalet. Is this true?

Similar sauces, to each their own taste. I love St Hub as a restaurant though, and I miss it in Alberta. All-you-can-eat coleslaw with any entree... mmmmm.

Anyone tried the BK poutine? I'm always so tempted when I'm there, but am so scared of disappointment.

St. Hubert is pretty overrated imo. I'd say there's not a whole lot of difference between it and Swiss Chalet. Rotisserie chicken places are extremely popular in Quebec, thus there are a ton of them. Chalet BBQ is my personal favourite. I saw Scotty Bowman there a couple months back!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St-Hubert

St-Hubert once had a presence throughout eastern Canada, but it now has few locations outside its home province of Quebec (http://forum.calgarypuck.com/wiki/Quebec), where it remains a dominant chain. Other locations are found in Ottawa (http://forum.calgarypuck.com/wiki/Ottawa), Cornwall (http://forum.calgarypuck.com/wiki/Cornwall,_Ontario), and Moncton (http://forum.calgarypuck.com/wiki/Moncton). St-Hubert is the 16th largest restaurant chain operating in Canada (http://forum.calgarypuck.com/wiki/Canada).

St-Hubert is now generally mutually exclusive (http://forum.calgarypuck.com/wiki/Mutually_exclusive) with the similar Swiss Chalet (http://forum.calgarypuck.com/wiki/Swiss_Chalet) chain, which exited the Quebec market in the early 2000s, although there is no formal agreement between the two.

Laurier Lounge has quite a few poutine choices. They treat it like an entree dish so it's somewhat expensive.

It squeeks.

The texture took me a moment to get use to. The gravy was really heavy and rich, but the fries were deliciously soft yet crunchy.

As I have no other poutine to compare it to, I have to say it was "OK."Ringing in at ~$6.50 for a medium fries that two of us shared, it seemed rather expensive.

+1 to Harvey's. They just do burgers right and the poutine is the icing. I use to always go to the Brentwood Mall Harvey's for that poutine fix.

There is no Harvey's in the Lower Mainland (that I'm aware of) other than the airport or for some strange reason all the Home Depots so it is always a special trip to the Home Depot for burgers and poutine of all things.

King of Subs didn't really impress me, but to be fair, they were packed for about 30 minutes while I drove home and the fries were incredible limp. I will have to give it another try though if I am back in the area and have time to eat there.

I am really embarrassed to say that I like Costco's poutine as well, but I also work close by enough that the fries maintain their integrity until I get a chance to eat it.

I also tried Rocky's burger bus poutine and wasn't happy about theirs either, but can't remember why exactly. Maybe too greasy or the fries too thick or something.
