GS, if you don't mind, I'm copying your excellent rules here:
24 teams and 20 categories.
Trades! you can make trades but the it has to be zero-sum since every team needs 20 albums. For example Team A can trade the 1st and 40th pick to Team B for the 5th and 6th pick. Even after you have selected a shows you can trade. There is no trade deadline however there will be no trades allowed after the very last pick. Both parties must send the trade details to me.
Make use of PMs and the chatroom to negotiate.
Switching!
At any time you can switch an album from one category to another if it qualifies for it.
--
When you are selecting please state in BOLD letters who you are selecting and in what category.
example: With the 1st overall pick of the draft, GirlySport's In-Box selects ......... in the Pop category.
And you can use a paragraph to state your case of why you made this selection and convince everyone why this album was great. You've seen how it's been done in the other drafts. We're all here to learn!
--
Ass-kickin'!: When it's your turn you have 24 hours to select. After 24 hours the draft will continue on until you come back and pick. Your name will have brackets around it in the thread title. If your turn is coming up and you are away, please send 3 choices to me and I will select for you.
- If you see a name in the thread title with a * beside it, that means they have submitted their pick to the commish.
That's pretty much it. Any questions you can ask in here or PM me...
Posting suggestions:
Try and post a picture of an album cover, and the track list. Provide your review, or link to a critic's review. I think we are all keen to learn about albums that are special to you, and might be unknown by a lot of people. Embed 2-3 youtube videos if possible:
Example (how to embed):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2iv_E-Fn9E
Copy portion in link after = sign ex. Y2iv E-Fn9E, and enclose it between (youtube) and (/youtube), but use square brackets [ ]
or: Y2iv_E-Fn9E

Holy cow! I was expecting my usual middle-of-the-pack-or-down-at-the-bottom spot.
Hmmm... Gimme a few minutes to narrow my list down here.
Edit: This is nuts. There are lots of potential first overall picks. The trick is to not cop out and just pick the best-selling album of all time, I think it's more important to pick an album that I actually listen to.

Sorry trout, I have to do this...
With the first overall selection in this year's CP Album Draft, The Upper Brash would like to select... in the Metal category...
Metallica's Master of Puppets!
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/e/e0/Metallica_-_Master_of_Puppets.jpg/200px-Metallica_-_Master_of_Puppets.jpg
Master of Puppets
Upon its release, Master of Puppets was immediately commercially successful, selling over half a million copies at its time of release without any major video/radio airplay, making it the band's first record to be certified Gold by the RIAA.
According to Allmusic's Steve Huey, Master of Puppets "was the band's greatest achievement." "Some critics have called Master of Puppets the best heavy metal album ever recorded", Huey noted. Master of Puppets has featured on several "greatest albums of all time" lists. The album is present in a list dubbed "The All-TIME 100 Albums" and published by TIME magazine in November 2006. In TIME critic Josh Tyrangiel's opinion, "Metallica didn't bother with hooks or pop discipline" in writing Master of Puppets. Metal Rules rated the album as being number one in a list of the "Top 100 Heavy Metal Albums" published in September 2003, whereas IGN also rated the album as being at first position in a list of the "Top 25 Metal Albums" issued in January 2007. It is included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, and Q magazine counted it among the 50 heaviest albums of all time. In 2003, the album was ranked number 167 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

You mean like a Greatest Hits disc vs a Box Set?
Technically speaking, a Greatest Hits disc is about 10-15 songs, while a Box Set is usually the band's entire catalogue. Although, I guess a Box Set is the very definition of a compilation, I'm not sure a 10-song disc can compete with picking an entire bands music catalogue.
I'm not sure...

I was hoping a box set compilation would be ok. If not, I have to rethink my picks.
If there is a limit, what do you think of 2-disc maximum for compilations?
Bobblehead
11-04-2008, 03:22 PM
I think a Box set is like a greatest hits, and should be fine.
The only issue I could see is some artists have released a number of different Greatest Hits, and I would hope we wouldn't see 3 people pick a different Greatest Hits by the same artist.
I would suggest that only Greatest Hits/Box set per Artist can be picked in the draft (by anybody).

box sets are a little tricky though
some bands have box sets that is literally every CD they put out, it wouldnt be fair if someone took said box set and those albums then were no longer available
as for one greatest hit/box set per artist, there are some artists that have been around for decades and have enough songs to put out multiple greatest hits albums without having any over lapping songs as well

Yeah I was going to say that too. Some bands/artists have spanned eras and their greatest hits discs are era specific.

I propose re; greatest hits - 2 cd max - no box sets - a band/artist can only be selected once by all GMs for greatest hits

I'm personally planning on picking a few favourites, then look for a bunch of lesser knows.
I know my tastes are not very exotic, and are often things you can hear on the radio, but I'm going to go through a few of my lesser know CDs and pull out a few things that people may not have heard of, or have forgotten about.

I think a lot of what makes these fun is just picking things I like and seeing how I compare against other people. What makes it weird for me, is that I tend to avoid magazines and radio stations, etc. I discover a lot of music on my own, and if I find myself playing it enough times, I consider it something I like. To then find out that I like the same things a lot of other people like, even though I might get there through different means, is comforting. :D

Sorry guys, didn't mean to clog up the thread with my questions.
As for the draft, I will admit that in the 90s and early 2000's, I was very boyband oriented, it's pretty much all I listened to for awhile. But in the last few years, I have come out of the fog and realized a lot of it wasn't really good, so I am trying to go back and find stuff that I missed the first time around. I am hoping this draft gives me a lot of "new to me" music that I can look up and enjoy.
I am already having trouble with the metal category though. I just don't like it, not my thing at all. I'll probably defer that one to my brother. He loves that stuff.

In the category Album - 1994-1996, I select The Stone Temple Pilots - Purple.
Their sophomore album, Purple, sometimes also known and 12 Gracious Melodies, is filled with the band's effort to distance set their own path and shake the "second rate Pearl Jam" label that had been foisted on them after Core.
The first hit off the album, Big Empty, actually became a hit before the album was released, since it was also included on the soundtrack for "The Crow". All this did was to whet the appetite of the public, and the album debuted at #1.
The name of the album, Purple never appears on the album, other than as a chinese symbol on the cover.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/36/Stonetemplepilotspurple.jpeg
As for myself, I heard this song played may times at my local pub, and discovered no many how many times I heard it I always enjoyed it, something that I can not say for very many albums. And even the hook laden hit "Interstate Love Song" is still a personal favourite, as are most of the tracks on the album. When I'm not sure what I want to listen to next, I am never disappointed by this album, and I have been listening to it for over a decade.

About the compilation thing, wouldn't it be simplest to say that a compilation album has to be a compilation? That means no full albums, no complete catalogues.
I think to limit the number of CD's is very arbitratry, and some bands and artists have best-of compilations that are 3 or even 4 CD's. I don't see the problem with that.
I for one was possibly going to pick a compilation that has 3 CD's, doesn't span the bands entire career, has about one third of not-on-albums material, has a bunch of new songs and so on. Why shouldn't I be able to pick that?
(Sorry for being late on this.)
WindomURL
11-05-2008, 09:16 AM
Itse, yeah a 2-CD limit is arbitrary. If you were to state your case as you've just done, I'm sure the Commish would approve it. The rule is there to prevent someone from picking a boxset consisting of a band's entire career.
Like troutman said, this is for fun. Drawing a hard line with insistence on following rules to the letter isn't.

The original Nuggets album (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:wpfexqyhld0e) is a greatest hits collection for the original wave of garage rock 1-hit wonders: all those fuzzed-out 60s, shaggy acts who's lives changed when they heard 'Louie Louie'. This is the first American response to the British Invasion: the sound of hundreds of dumb teenagers getting very, very high and trying to re-write 'Satisfaction'.
The original record has been reissued a bunch of times, and expanded to a whole box set. The box is great, but it's the original double album that has all the crucial cuts: The Standells, The Electric Prunes, Count 5 (read the Lester Bangs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lester_bangs) essay about how he learned to love 'Psychotic Reaction' if you ever get a chance), The Remains, The Nazz, and a whole bunch of other 'The' bands. This is punk rock's ground zero.
Original double album
Side one
The Electric Prunes: "I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night)"
The Standells: "Dirty Water"
The Strangeloves: "Night Time"
The Knickerbockers: "Lies"
The Vagrants: "Respect"
Mouse: "A Public Execution"
The Blues Project: "No Time Like the Right Time"
Side two
The Shadows of Knight: "Oh Yeah"
The Seeds: "Pushin' Too Hard"
The Barbarians: "Moulty"
The Remains: "Don't Look Back"
The Magicians: "An Invitation to Cry"
The Castaways: "Liar, Liar"
The 13th Floor Elevators: "You're Gonna Miss Me"
Side three
Count Five: "Psychotic Reaction"
The Leaves: "Hey Joe"
Michael and the Messengers: "Romeo & Juliet"
The Cryan' Shames: "Sugar and Spice"
The Amboy Dukes: "Baby Please Don't Go"
Blues Magoos: "Tobacco Road"
Side four
The Chocolate Watchband: "Let's Talk About Girls"
The Mojo Men: "Sit Down, I Think I Love You"
The Third Rail: "Run, Run, Run"
Sagittarius: "My World Fell Down"
Nazz: "Open My Eyes"
The Premiers: "Farmer John"
The Magic Mushrooms: "It's-a-Happening"

Team Mind Riot chooses, in the 91-93 category, Soundgarden's spectacular album Badmotorfinger.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/6/63/Soundgarden_-_Badmotorfinger.jpg/200px-Soundgarden_-_Badmotorfinger.jpg
I've been listening to this album pretty much since it's release and I never tire of it. Jesus Christ Pose, Mind Riot, Rusty Cage,Room a Thousand Years Wide...... 1991 was a great year for music.

"Drawing Flies" (Cameron, Cornell) 2:25
"Holy Water" (Cornell) 5:07
"New Damage" (Cornell, Thayil, Cameron) 5:40
Just a brilliant record.
You know something though, if you put a gun to my head I don't think I could give you my favorite Soundgarden record. I can't pick. I've been playing Superunkown over and over for about the last month. I had actually forgotten about a few of the songs on it that are so much better than the radio hits. Love that record too!

With my first pick in this really awesome music draft, I select in the category of Album - Folk / Blues / World (Country, Western, Bluegrass, Reggae, Afro, Flamenco, what ever), Willie Nelson's 1975 masterpiece,Red Headed Stranger.
http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/a/a4/WillieNelsonRedHeadedStrangeralbumcover.jpg
Yeah, this is a little off the board, but I haven't had any research time and I think that I really require that for most categories. There are two, however, that are no brainers for me and this is one of them. Of the two, I thought this one had the better chance of being snagged first and here we are!.
This is such a great album. Concept albums are rare in country music but Red Headed Stranger is one. The record is a jumbled 'mess' for lack of a better term, but it flat out works. It's so Willie Nelson. With his awkward timing and lyrics that feel like stories, he pulls off making an album that is a metaphor for his performing in terms of its pace and tone. It's quite an accomplishment even if it wasn't intentional (which I don't know to be the case).
Red Headed Stranger ranked #184 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of all time.
"Time of the Preacher" (Willie Nelson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willie_Nelson)) – 2:26

"Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Eyes_Crying_in_the_Rain)" (Fred Rose (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Rose_(musician))) – 2:21
"Red Headed Stranger" (Stutz, Lindeman) – 4:00

"Where Did You Sleep Last Night? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_the_Pines)" (Traditional, Arranged by Lead Belly (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lead_Belly)) – 5:08I'd write a whole fluff piece about this album, but all you have to do is listen to "Lake Of Fire", and "Something In The Way", and you will understand why I picked this album first.
I never considered Kurt Cobain to be a great singer, but the emotion, the pain, the grit he brought to every song made it easy to overlook. His voice told the story, regardless if you could make out the words.
The concept of this album was different than most MTV Unplugged discs, as only "Come As You Are" and argueably "All Apologies", were commercial hits for Nirvana, while most other bands took the Unplugged experience to just play their hits by way of acoustic. "About A Girl" hit the charts after the CD's release, a slowed down, mythodical version of it's former self.
This was also the first album to be released after Cobain's death. (Recorded: November '93, Aired: December '93, Cobain's Death: April '94, CD Released: November '94)
Haunting, yet one of the most perfect albums I've ever listend to.

Nirvana is about my 5th favorite Seattle band, but that doesn't mean I don't love their stuff. Kurt was special, for sure and Dave Grohl has made it pretty clear how talented he is over the last 14 years since Nirvana ended.

According to the DVD, and Wikipedia, the band rehearsed for two days prior, cause of their grungy, harder sound. They had no idea what the songs would turn out to be.
Through the 3 days, Cobain was said to have been in quite the sour mood, but the guy was an emotional wreck well before that, with the fame and pressure he would give into just a few months later.
If my son ever wants to know about Nirvana, Unplugged, the CD and the DVD are perfect references.

bump... 2nd page... shame!
Sorry, took a while to make a preliminary list of picks. I'm having some trouble fitting a handful of "Must Have" albums from the 70's here.
For our first round pick, team Twist/Shout picks Raw Power by Iggy & The Stooges (1973) in the Punk category. (This is a bit of a stretch since "punk music" as a concept didn't exist in '73, but since it's one of the cornerstones of the whole genre, I don't see a problem.)
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_ZC8AWOly7vE/RoFPq2-qJHI/AAAAAAAAE8o/oI8PlncQp8E/Iggy-And-The-Stooges-Raw-Power-Del-1973-Delantera.jpghttp://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/846.jpg
Sporting one of the greatest rock covers of all time, it's one of the more unlikely stories of rock'n'roll greatness.
The Stooges had broken up after two unsuccesful albums two years before, and after meeting producer Tony DeFries and David Bowie in New York (where much partying had ensued, ending in Bowie doing an intervention that propably stopped Pop from killing himself with heroin), Iggy Pop had been signed in Britain for Columbia records to make a solo album.
He had insisted on bringing along his old guitarist Alex Williamson, the original plan being that they'd find a rhythm section from overseas. However after some consideration they also brought in Ron and Scott Asheton for bass and drums, and so the Stooges was reborn in England. The band was pretty much left to it's own devices in the studio, resulting in something that Tony DeFries flat out refused to release, and Iggy was shuffled to LA while they figured out what to do.
In comes David Bowie, who was also signed by DeFries, to do a new mix of the album. Of course the budget was tight, so Bowie had all of one day to do it in an inexpensive LA studio. Initially this didn't seem to do much good, as the album was another commercial failure, and the band broke up again soon after.
However, the reputation of Raw Power grew tremendously in subsequent years, and the album's volume and ferocity became benchmarks against which later albums were measured. In 2003, the album was ranked number 125 on Rolling Stone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolling_Stone) magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_500_Greatest_Albums_of_All_Time).

Please Kill Me brings the sound of the punk generation to life. Iggy Pop, Danny Fields, Dee Dee and Joey Ramone, Nico, Patti Smith, and scores of other famous and infamous punk figures lend their voices to this definitive account of that outrageous, explosive era. From its origins in the twilight years of Andy Warhol's New York reign to its last gasps as eighties corporate rock, the phenomenon that was known as punk is scrutinized, eulogized, and idealized by the people who were there and who made it happen.

Team Goδtwar Galore is pleased to choose with their first round pick… from the category of Album 1997-1999…The Afghan Whigs – 1965. Released in 1998, this gem was to be the last studio record of a beautiful 14+ year and 6 record run. Despite critical acclaim through the early to mid 90’s the Whigs never really caught on in big way. 1965 was my introduction to the band and has been my #1 desert island album since then. The perfect blend of pop/rock/soul, this album is dripping with cool and righteous hooks. Damn I love this album!

I watched the youtubes troutman posted and added them to my 'explore more' list as well. I had heard the name before, but never the music. Really like both of those songs.
These threads that we'v had (4 or 5 of them now that have been great) have given me a huge amount of new (to me) music to explore and a lot of it I really like.

Troutman, how many releases do you buy each week?
Just curious.
Not that many really - about 40 new cds each year. I listen to a lot of radio - woxy.com, 3WK.com, CJSW, CBC 2 and 3.
I will be getting Afghan Whigs soon - that slipped through my cracks.

With our first selection, we are proud to take, in the category of Album - 2000-2002, my favorite album my arguably the greatest working band of the last 15 years... Because, really, who doesn't love concept albums about the Robot Apocalypse? Radiohead's Kid A
http://www.motherjones.com/riff_blog/mojo-cover-radioheadkida.JPG
Difficult to overemphasis how truly ahead of the curve this album was. If there was any doubt before Kid A about Radiohead's ability to continue to re-invent themselvs, remain relevant and push forward in directions nobody could predict, they were quashed with the release of this masterpiece. Remains very much in the conversation when considering greatest albums of this 00s.

I have a great friend who lives in Des Moines, IA. We went to college together for a year. Anyway, back in the day he had hundreds of CD's. This was 1989 and CD's weren't the preferred medium in those days. So this guy was a true music afficianado. Still is.
We've been exchanging CD's that the other wasn't familiar with. I got him to give The Hip a try with Road Apples and introduced him to a couple of other little known bands that he enjoyed.
Today I sat down and listened to the 4 he sent me this week. 3 of the artists I had never heard of and boy was I not disappointed. Some really good stuff.
What's my point? There is so much GREAT music out there that most people never hear. Thanks for sharing with me guys!

With my first pick in the draft I select in the Folk (Country) category, Lost & Found by JASON & THE SCORCHERS(1985):
http://jasonandthescorchers.com/
Their sound was described as "TNT From Tennessee," "country punk," and "Merle Haggard meets the Ramones." Jason was nicknamed "Jerry Lee Rotten." In reality, the band was simply working out on stage what they had in their heads and hearts from their teenage years: roots in country, hearts in rock, minds more or less in the gutter. All the members of the band grew up around country music, but they were interested in rock as well. Whatever the impetus, from 1982 to 1985 Jason and the Scorchers were one of the best live bands ever.
Jason & the Scorchers to receive Americana Music Associations Lifetime Achievement in Performance Award on Sept 18th!
http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drj800/j858/j85803sehi4.jpg
Jason & the Scorchers' first full-length album, Lost & Found, explodes out of the starting gate with "Last Time Around," a no-quarter rocker that starts with a blast from Perry Baggs (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:jcfyxqw5ld0e)' snare drum that sounds like a gunshot, and power chords from Warner Hodges (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:dnfrxqy5ldhe)' guitar that cut like a machete, and while the album's dynamics allow the impact of the music to rise and fall over the course of these 11 songs, the set always lives up to the high stakes set by the opening salvo. While the Scorchers' Fervor (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:3xfoxql5ldse) EP rocked hard, Lost & Found hits even harder, but also reveals a broader musical palate; "White Lies," "If Money Talks," and "Change the Tune" back up this band's reputation as Nashville's toughest country punks, but the honky tonk piano on "Broken Whiskey Glass" and feral fiddle work on "Blanket of Sorrow" show the big amps didn't drown out their traditionalist impulses. And while the Scorchers may rev "Lost Highway" up to 95 mph, the two acoustic numbers, "Still Tied" and "Far Behind," could pass for lost classics from some Grand Ol' Opry legend's songbook, and the latter tune makes clear Jason Ringenberg (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:d9fpxqugldfe) can sing sad and pretty every bit as well as he can howl the rock & roll. There was usually an element of camp in most early cowpunk acts, but Jason & the Scorchers thankfully had no truck with irony or derisive humor; they believed in the emotional honesty of great country music as much as the raw fury of punk, and Lost & Found pays homage to both with the undiluted passion of true believers, and it's the best record this fine band would ever make.

What, then, is the big deal about a band that never had a gold record or a Top 20 hit?
Thursday's career achievement award isn't about sales figures, it's about energy, inspiration and influence. The Scorchers' American collision of punk, rock and country battered some doors, and if the band emerged with broken collarbones from all that banging, groups such as the Georgia Satellites, the Black Crowes, Wilco and Son Volt were free to walk right through. The band opened minds and ears in Nashville as well, as evidenced by a display at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, where Ringenberg's red shirt, the one he wore for the Fervor cover shoot, hangs behind glass.

You would probably be interested in the Cowpunk movement of the mid-1980s:

A precursor to the alternative country-rock of the decade to follow, Cowpunk was a 1980s phenomenon incorporating the mood and texture of traditional country music with the energy and attitude of punk.

Radiohead: The Bends
http://www.yawam.info/images/albums/grandes/radiohead-the_bends.png
quite possibly one of the greatest bands of our time, it was hard to choose which album to select. In the end, I opted for the bends. Quite possibly one of the best albums released in the decade
Although it lacked the instant success of later Radiohead albums, The Bends achieved triple platinum sales certifications in the UK and Canada and platinum sales in the US and the EU. It has appeared repeatedly in polls and music magazine lists of greatest albums of all time, particularly in Britain. Over time the album has been seen in the UK as one of the dominant influences on rock music after britpop

I think Stop Making Sense gets a bit too much credit because of the popularity of the film (which I think is also overrated). The Name of This Band... is just way superior in my opinion.

I have a similair record in mind, but I think the logical thing is to put it in 1985. The "new" songs were likely b-sides etc recorded around the time of the original record. Many classic records get re-released, but I think we should go with the original release date to put in it's proper context.

I am very pleased to make this selection. I am sorry to WindomUrl if you were going to pick this one, but as we discussed at the pub last week, it is one of my favorite records. I bought it mid 80's and have listened to it for over two decades. It never gets old.
When I first bought it, I read the album notes and there was very little information on the band. It was recorded in London England, so I assumed they were British. Imagine my suprise so many years later to learn that not only were the two leaders of the band Canadian, but they were from Calgary! Windom even went to school with them, again sorry.

They are guitarist Mark Bandola and bassist Rob Vandeven. And they are, of course, The Lucy Show!
I will put them, for now, in the 1985 category; until such time as I am told to move them.(I just got told to move them...edit!)
The album is Mania.
1. The Land And The Life (Vandeven/The Lucy Show)
2. View From The Outside (Bandola/ The Lucy Show)
3. Sojourn's End (Vandeven/ TLS)
4. Sad September (Vandeven/ TLS)
5. A Million Things (Bandola/TLS)
6. Sun And Moon (Vandeven/TLS)
7. Shame (Bandola/TLS)
8. Melody (Vandeven/ TLS)
9. Part Of Me Now (Bandola/TLS)
10. New Message (Bandola/TLS)

11. Jam In E (TLS)
12. Invitation (Bandola/TLS)
13. Civil Servant (Bandola/TLS)
14. Sun And Moon (Live)
15. View From The Outside (Live)
16. New Message (Basement Demo)
17. A Million Things (Original Mix)
Band
Mark Bandola: Vocals, Guitars, keyboards
Rob Vandeven: Vocals, Bass
Peter Barraclough: vocals, guitars
Brian Hudspeth: vocals, drums
Some reviews of the band:
http://www.thelucyshow.net/press.asp
"'Undone' (the first record) had seen the foursome make significant inroads with a moody, subconcious, contemplative yet beautiful LP that seemd an heir to Joy Division, The Cure, and The Comsat Angels. Whereas 'Mania' took those elemants and added a big slice of boisterous 60s pop, minor-psychedelia, and power-pop to form the brighter, snappier, more exuberant record you hold."
Jack Rabid, The Big Takeover
More from the above..."...sparkiling optimism of Bandola's Beatlesesque, melodic A Million Things and New Message. Yet it also takes in Vandeven's wistful nostalgia on Land and the Life (about Calgary!!), his John Ford-cinematic Sojourn's End (the psychedelic guitars near the end are fantastic), and his thin line between love and hate on Sun and Moon. Meanwhile, Bandola morphs from cheerfulness to Shame's revulsion over global indifference to apartheid."
Here you can listen to a couple songs:
http://www.words-on-music.com/lucyshow.html
There was a video for A million Things that got MTV airplay. It is on YouTube.

SCOTS @allmusic: http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:vaivad8kv8w5
True to their name, North Carolina's Southern Culture on the Skids offers an affectionate parody of local white-trash trailer-park culture, matching their skewed outlook with a wild, careening brand of rock & roll. SCOTS' music is a quintessentially Southern-fried amalgam of rockabilly, boogie, country, blues, swamp pop, and chitlin circuit R&B, plus a liberal dose of California surf guitar, a hint of punk attitude, and the occasional mariachi horns. Following an early incarnation as a relatively straightforward roots rock outfit, they morphed into a raucous, sleazy, tongue-in-cheek party band obsessed with sex and food; in fact, fried chicken became a crucial part of their live performances, whether it was used in eating contests or tossed into the audience.

I'd never heard of this band until they performed on Late Night with Conan O'Brien in '97 for this album. But wow, what a treat. Fine musicianship, a rocking fun spirit, and a stage act that could be described as a cross between the B-52s and Cheap Trick. I wish I could upload a video of this performance now, but maybe someday when I get the hardware setup to do so. In the meantime, here are a couple of live performances from Youtube.

For my first pick, the Rock and Roll Means Well Team is very happy to pick in the 2000-2002 category, the Drive-by Trucker's 2001 double album of rock and roll genius, Southern Rock Opera.

The rock opera isn't dead; it just smells funny - in this case, like whiskey breath, tour-van stink and the smoking wreckage of Lynyrd Skynyrd's 1977 plane crash. In two discs and twenty songs, Dixie's Drive-By Truckers explode the yahoo baggage of 1970s Southern rock in a roaring memoir of growing up white, loud and desperate in the former Confederacy
http://www.rollingstone.com/reviews/album/195461/review/5945922/southernrockopera
This album is just so great. I could listen to it over and over again. It's just straight out rock, three guitars that just rip and snarl their way through some of the best rock and rolls songs ever written.
This album has also introduced me to another host of rock and roll bands from the South, as well as opening up my eyes to the great legacy of soul and blues music that came out the South.

Can you explain to me how it is possible that I don't own this album Hanna?
Great pick. Outstanding.
You know what Dis, I could understand that
The MTV UNplugged wasn't the same success that it was following the release of this performance. That album became a beast of it's own in regards to record sales... it reached a whole new audience... almost like the adult contemporary audience was buying up the units. I think the sales and new listeners had brushed of what would have been other listeners.
With the reliease of the movie sountrach for Rush and I think one of the Leathal Weapon... this releiase wasn't really the reliease that Clapton fans were waiting for or antisabating. I could have my time line off but if I remember correctly there was a huge growing demand for Eric to finially put out a blues record (From the Craddle).
Unfortunilty MTV and the record lable missed the boat and left out two of the most important songs from the show. With the death of his son Conor the songs My Fathers Eye's and Circus Left Town were more written about Conor then Tear's in Heaven, which was more written for the Rush movie and allowed him to touch on his emotions about the loss of Conor but know where in the depths of the other two songs.
.... One other not about the recording, I remember for the longest time afterwards that Eric had always performed Layla with the new acoustic arrangment. When he finially did eventually change over to the original electirc version... that opening riff at the show was like a bolt of electircity. A very amazing response from the crowd.

I love The Dirty South. Don't get me wrong, 'Where the Devil Don't Stay' is probably my favourite song. But Southern Rock Opera is just an epic 20 song saga that in tells the stories of the writer's lives growing up in North Alabama, as well as tying in a real cool parallel story about the rise and fall of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Just so many epic songs on this one and it just goes and goes.
Truly sets the bar for the modern rock band in my opinion. That is, the ability to put a double album worth of completely good songs. None of this single crap.

For my first pick, in the METAL Category, I take Black Sabbath - Paranoid
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/64/Black_Sabbath_-_Paranoid.jpg
Side one
1. "War Pigs" 7:57
2. "Paranoid" 2:52
3. "Planet Caravan" 4:32
4. "Iron Man" 5:58
Side two
1. "Electric Funeral" 4:52
2. "Hand of Doom" 7:07
3. "Rat Salad" 2:31
4. "Fairies Wear Boots" 6:15
The sophomore album from these metal gods was an incredible display with several songs that can be considered metal anthems: War Pigs, Ironman and Fairies Wear Boots. Interesting tidbit about the song 'Paranoid'
As drummer Bill Ward explains: "We didn't have enough songs for the album, and Tony just played the [Paranoid] guitar lick and that was it. It took twenty, twenty-five minutes from top to bottom." The song was written with no intention of it being a successful hit for the band, only to be a filler on the album.
I don't know why I had never read this before but in my research for this album I found out the following information about lead guitarist Tony Iommi.
He played guitar left-handed. In an industrial accident at the age of 17 on his last day of work in a sheet metal factory, he lost the tips of the middle and ring finger of his right hand. Iommi considered abandoning music, but his boss (who knew of Iommi's "night job" as a pub band guitar player) encouraged him to reconsider by playing a record by jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt, who earned wide acclaim despite limited use of his fretting hand following an injury.
After attempting to learn to play right-handed, Iommi strung his guitars with extra-light strings (using banjo strings, which were a lighter gauge than even the lightest guitar-strings of the time) and wore plastic covers over the two damaged fingers. He fashioned the latter himself, by melting plastic liquid-soap bottles into a ball and then using a soldering iron to make holes into this ball, putting his fingers in while the plastic was still soft enough to be shaped. He then trimmed and sanded away the excess plastic to leave himself with two thimbles, which he then covered with leather, to provide better grip on the strings. Subsequent tips have been custom-made.
This is the reason behind the slower feel to the Sabbath songs. It is not as melodic as Maiden, doesn't have the epic solos of Metallica and doesn't rip your head off and s**t down your throat the way Slayer does. Sabbath, in my opinion, is pure metal. Heavy music that doesn't need to do any of the previously mention items to get your heart pumping and make you want to stand on your feet and throw up your horns.
I will add some youtube later, I am at work and unable to. I am really excited about the rest of this draft. Just the research for a band I am a huge fan of was a blast.

The Four Elements select with their 1st round pick, in the 1994-1996 category:
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing...
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y28/djroach/endtroducing.jpg
Endtroducing..... is structured completely out of sampled elements, including hip hop (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_hop_music), jazz (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jazz), funk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Funk), psychedelia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychedelic_music), old television shows, interviews and percussion tracks. The entirety of the album was composed on an MPC60 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akai_MPC60), a machine which Shadow would later pass on to Chief Xcel. The album has been cited in Guinness World Records (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guinness_World_Records) as being the first album created entirely from sampled sources.
NPR (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NPR) included Endtroducing..... in its list of the top 300 American songs and albums of the 20th century,[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endtroducing#cite_note-1) and Spin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spin_magazine) placed the album at number 69 in its list of the 100 greatest albums between 1985 and 2005 in June 2005.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endtroducing#cite_note-2) In 2006, the album was chosen by TIME (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_%28magazine%29) as one of the 100 best albums of all time.

With the 22nd overall selection, in the 1986-1990 category, The Rubes selects A Tribe Called Quest - "People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm".
While not best-selling or even best reviewed album put out by the group, their debut album was seen as an integral part of the hip-hop movement of the late 80s. ATCQ's use of sampling on this album was seen as innovative and would become a cornerstone of hip-hop.
The lyrics on this album were also seen as dramatically different than the majority of the rap/hip-hop scene at the time, as Quest went for a more humourous and wittier approach than the more violent or politically-themed lyrics of the scene.

Like Ro I have decided to move away from my safe zone and delve a little deeper. I was poised to select my favourite album of all time, a choice that would have been seen as safe, boring, and probably predictable too. Given the selections so far that simply will not do now.
So without further ado "The British Invasion" are delighted to select for Album 1981-1985 the self-titled first album by arguably the definitive British band of the Eighties,
The Smiths
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/3/30/The-Smiths-cover.png/200px-The-Smiths-cover.png (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:The-Smiths-cover.png)
The Smiths were a very interesting band, combining melodic and catchy music with powerful and disturbing lyrics about unconventional and controversial subjects. There's no denying the profound influence that the band had on British rock over the next decade though. Quite honestly, I don't beleive I truly appreciated this band when they first came on the scene in the UK. i thought them a little weird and out there. It was only later looking back that I came to understand and enjoy their music.
WIKI:
The Smiths is the debut album by English (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/England) alternative rock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternative_rock) band The Smiths (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Smiths), released on February 20 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/February_20), 1984 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1984). The album was well received by the critics as well as the public, and it established The Smiths as a prominent band in the 1980s music scene in the United Kingdom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom).
In 1989, the album was ranked number 22 on Rolling Stone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolling_Stone) magazine's list of the 100 greatest albums of the 1980s. In 2003, the album was ranked number 481 on that magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolling_Stone%27s_500_Greatest_Albums_of_All_Time) .

Sure it is possible, but it'll need to wait a bit for me to sort through the posts. I wanted to be able to link to the posts, but I haven't figured out that functionality.
Edit: and of course now I figured out the correct search terms and think I can link them to the posts. It'll take me a bit, but it will be done.

With my 2nd pick in the CP Music Album Draft I am pleased to select in the Album 1981-1985 category Richard and Linda Thompson's Shoot out the Lights.
http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drg300/g360/g36066e1tkg.jpg
One of my favourite albums from this decade. I wasn't aware of it when it first came out and in fact it wasn't until the 90's when I first heard it but after one listen I was hooked. Unfortunately, the videos do not have Linda in them as I suspect they were made after they had broken up.

In the second round, I pick Big Country - The Crossing in the category 1981-85.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/cb/Big_Country_-_The_Crossing.jpg
If your only recollection of Big Country is guys riding across Scotland on atvs then you need to give another listen to the whole album. Rolling Stone's description of the album: "Here's a big-noise guitar band from Britain that blows the knobs off all the synth-pop diddlers and fake-funk frauds who are cluttering up the charts these days. That was going to be one of my next picks actually! A very under-rated band - could have been as big as U2, but didn't have the same charisma. They were big in Europe, but in the US were seen as a one-trick pony. Great guitar rock. There is a great re-release of The Crossing that adds b-sides from the Wonderland EP. Stuart Adamson committed suicide in 2001.
Here is some stuff I already dug up :

well, I'm not much of a fan of Rap/Hip-hop, so I'll grab that while there's still a good selection of them out there. The Band With No Name will take the Run DMC classic:
Raising Hell
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/5/54/RaisingHell.jpg/200px-RaisingHell.jpg
"Peter Piper" 3:25
"It's Tricky (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/It%27s_Tricky)" 3:03
"My Adidas (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=My_Adidas&action=edit&redlink=1)" (McDaniels/Rubin) 2:47
"Walk This Way (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walk_This_Way)" (feat. Aerosmith (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerosmith)) 5:11
Features new vocal and guitar parts by Steven Tyler (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_Tyler) and Joe Perry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Perry) of Aerosmith (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerosmith) based on their original 1975 recording, as well as a sample of the original drum intro during the second verse
"Is It Live" 3:06
"Perfection" 2:52
"Hit It Run" 3:10
Samples "Rocket in the Pocket" by Cerrone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cerrone)
"Raising Hell" 5:31
"You Be Illin' (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=You_Be_Illin%27&action=edit&redlink=1)" 3:26
"Dumb Girl" 3:31
"Son of Byford" :27
"Proud to Be Black" 3:14
Walk This Way was played to death, and it helped save the band Aerosmith (which isn't really all that good because they haven't had anything really interesting since the 70's) but it was a fun song for awhile.
You Be Illin still makes me laugh. And it's just about as far from an annoying Gangsta Rap record as you can get.

As my second round choice I choose for the punk category Refused's The Shape of Punk to Come :
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/7e/TheShapeOfPunkToCome.jpeg
Released in Oct. 1998 the album's title became very prophetic as it influenced the next generation of punk and hardcore bands. Created a new sound that although was reminiscent of bands like Nation of Ulysses was unique in its own way. I wasn't going to pick this album because it's fairly well known, but it also had a profound impact on my life.

Why is it unfair? It is not like this is a contest. There are millions of albums to choose from, so where is there a disadvantage?
I could understand in a hockey pool , where there is a limited number of good picks, but this is completely different.
In a snake, with 20 gms, it gets really long between picks for people. I think that was the rationale.
People are making creative picks of records that most people don't know.

With this way the wait for the bottom selections will be a much longer wait on average then the above.
The snake draft works like a wobble effect where the wait time favours one end for one round the swings to favour the other for the next round..... Even number rounds favours the top, and odd number rounds favour the bottom equalling out the time for each selection
Right now it's just favours the top end
What the hockey draft and millions of album selections that you mentioned have to do with time I don't know.

Ever notice there's actually many good albums out there?
Took me a while, but I finally got to a conclusion.
As our 2nd round pick, team Twist/Shout picks Let's Get It On by Marvin Gaye in the R&B / Funk category.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/6/69/Let%27s_Get_It_On.jpg/200px-Let%27s_Get_It_On.jpg
Wikipedia:
Released August 28, 1973 on the Motown subsidiary label Tamla Records (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamla_Records). Recording sessions for the album took place from June 1970 to July 1973. Let's Get It On served as Gaye's first venture into the funk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Funk) genre and romance (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romance_%28love%29)-themed music. The album has been noted by many music critics for its sexually (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual) explicit content, and has been called "one of the most sexually charged albums ever recorded."
The sexual balladry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballad_%28music%29) and seductive, funky sound present on the album later influenced many contemporary soul musicians and helped pioneer slow jam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slow_jam) music, as well as the quiet storm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quiet_storm) and contemporary R&B (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contemporary_R%26B) genres. Following its initial reception of general favor from critics, the album has been regarded by many music writers and critics as a landmark recording in R&B and soul music, as Gaye's smooth soul sound on the album marked a change for his record label's previously success with the "Motown Sound (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motown_Sound)" formula, while also helping further funk music's popularity during the 1970s.

I also have to quote the liner notes:
"I contend that SEX IS SEX and LOVE IS LOVE. When combined, they work well together, if two people are of about the same mind. But they are really two discrete needs and should be treated as such. Time and space will not permit me to expound further, especially in the area of the psychce. I don't believe in the overly moralistic philosophies. Have your sex, it it can be very exciting if you're lucky.
I hope that the music that I present here makes you lucky. "
