Culled from the other thread:

Here's a couple ideas that might be worth talking about:
1) Thoughts on who the changed schedule format will benefit the most and harm the most.
2) For JL, what are his favourite buildings in the NHL to visit and what are his least favourite?

JiriHrdina

IMO it's not really that surprising that Pardy's making this team when there's a log-jam on defence. He did it in junior, he wasn't supposed to make the 2003-2004 Cape Breton Screaming Eagles with the likes of Tim Ramholt, and Alex Picard

(Wow you're talking about Ramholt now . . . shoulda kept him in junior another year ;))

Brad Marsh

I'm not sure that Pardy sticking at #7 is much a of a surprise. As mentioned, Pardy was turning heads at camp last year.

Especially when you consider that he's beaten out guys like Eriksson or Warrener.

To me, Boyd has been the surprise of the camp. A lot of people are thinking he would be a good fit on the top line. That's a very different role for Boyd than anyone was talking about coming into camp.

What do we expect from the Flames PK this year?

With some of the changes in personnel and the addition of some youth, do we expect to see an improvement in the GA, or does it all begin and end with Kiprusoff?

3rd line that can score will make the big difference this year...last year they were a glorified 4th line that put up very poor numbers.

Ronald Pagan
10-06-2008, 08:28 PM
They turned to a more smash-mouth offence in the last 3rd of the season when Tanguay and Huselius both went stone cold. Nolan, Iginla, Langkow all stepped up. Offence likely wont be as good this year but they'll be able to score some timely goals.

How many games will McElhinney play this year? And will Keenan play Kiprusoff less?

Brad Marsh
10-06-2008, 08:30 PM
Although there was no shortage of shuffling throughout the pre-season, and there were few combinations that saw significant time together, I have to agree that the line of Glencross-Boyd-Moss was great. I would say the best combination we saw in pre-season, IMO.

2007/2008 Regular Season:

Shots For / Game: 28.2
Shots Against / Game: 28.5

Closer than most would have guessed I think during the regular season.

The problem for the team was in the playoffs:

SF/G = 23.1
SA/G = 32.7

Hopefully the new forward lines, especially at the bottom-half of the roster, can bring more of a defensive presence this year - ESPECIALLY at playoff time.

Re: Kiprusoff

Is any top tier goalie, given the swings in confidence and the "what have you done for me lately" mentality, outside of Broduer and Roy, going to be solid as a rock year in and year out?
I can't name too many goalies that you can say has played at that highest level for 3 or 4 years in a row..even Brodeur last year was nothing special...so can anyone expect goalies to maintian that level year in and year out....?

ok, maybe an overreaction but whatever...If Kips keeps declining and letting in softies every game you gotta consider your options eventually...just sayin...that being said, I luvs Kips and confident he can get his game back with better team D...

Brad Marsh
10-06-2008, 08:57 PM
It's tough for the GM though.

The goaltender is so important to a successful franchise - and the number of elite goalies in the league is a small one.

I can see why a GM might be tempted to throw a first-round choice on a goalie. Especially when one is sitting there that looks like he might be a stud.

I'm not sure that Pardy sticking at #7 is much a of a surprise. As mentioned, Pardy was turning heads at camp last year.

To me, Boyd has been the surprise of the camp. A lot of people are thinking he would be a good fit on the top line. That's a very different role for Boyd than anyone was talking about coming into camp.

I have been loudly saying that Boyd is a great fit there on the topline for a long time now.

I agree though that I was virtualy alone in that last playoffs and during the summer and only since the pre-season has started are people coming on board the Boyd bandwagon with me...

Looked into it and I have been saying it since February of last year with a few sustained discussions since then over the summer, and I think I even lost karma/skill once after I got mad at someone for saying I was stupid for thinking Boyd was topline material (<which is deserved, since I shouldn't be a dick about it either). I think he, Iginla and Langkow could be a deadly line but it may take 2/3's of a year before Keenan runs with it (after trying Bertuzzi and Cammalleri and some of Conroy, Lombardi and Bourque).

okay Claeren, I fixed it. :D

But I must still say, to go from not drawing into the lineup during the San Jose series, to making a legitimate case for himself to start on the top line (or at least to see time on the top line) has to be considered one of the best surprises from camp this year - at least for me anyway.

Here's hoping his preseason success carries over into the regular season. It would be a huge lift to the team.

Thanks everyone, especially for the math tutoring. Once I realized I had mistakenly used $1.25M (as half of Warrener's actual salary) as opposed to the cap hit of $2.35M as a starting point, I knew it was game over as far as spitting out the correct number.

Sincere apologies for the occasional spaced-out comments or incoherent ramblings. It's not the same as pounding on a keyboard and having a few minutes to collect your thoughts before proceeding! Thanks to the guys for nursing me through the hour.

Anyone can find their stats and see how much Brodeur's and Roy's numbers have fluctuated over the years. It used to be taken for granted that a player can have worse seasons and better seasons without anything being irrevocably wrong, and that a goaltender's numbers follow how the team plays, but these days sights are set much shorter, and a goaltender is supposed to prove his worth to the investors every three months - and if he doesn't, people panic. Let's trade him while he still has any value left!

The panicking will never stop. It will go on until Kiprusoff leaves, and it will continue with the next guy.

Thanks for being on the show, I'm loving CP Radio, and the guests always add to the discussion. As for the half of $2.35, in fairness we all have calculators on the computer right in front of us which we can access at a moments notice, not like we were live on the air.

strange to call Chucko ('04 draftee) a bust when early in the show the '04 draft was being lauded for landing 3 players on the starting roster so early after that draft

edit. just listened to these parts again; sounds like two different people gave the first and second comments; hard to tell on the radio
