I keep hearing about how great 'Finding Neverland' is... Could this be the push factor for me?
Well Stray I hope it is - you can come back and report your findings.....lol.
Honestly, it was a really good movie, maybe a bit slow in places but overall the story and the excellent acting more than made up for any pacing issues.
As our 16th round pick, team Selfmade Heroes picks Mies vailla menneisyyttä (The Man Without A Past) (2002) in the Foreign Category.
A film by Aki Kaurismäki, one of my all-time favourite filmmakers. (I was originally going to save this pick for later since I'm pretty confident no-one else would've picked it, but I sort of run out of picks for now.)

Opening sequence, displaying the general premise of the film

(With Spanish subtitles)
This scene displays "M" getting a grip on his new life. The movie is placed in a sort of an out-of-time fantasy of "old Finland", and there's a lot of old music playing throughout the film.

(With English subtitles)
Once again, I'll quote someone from IMDB (Max_Cinefilo89 from Italy):
The Man Without a Past, the second installment in Aki Kaurismäki's "losers" trilogy (the first being 1996's Drifting Clouds), is, to date, the only Finnish film to have received a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar nomination, and deservedly so. It's a wonderful, heartbreaking opus, and arguably Kaurismäki's finest movie.
At the story's center we find a nameless man (Markku Peltola), who arrives in Helsinki for unknown reasons. That same night, he's brutally assaulted by a group of punks. This incident makes him look dead, although we immediately learn he is alive, if completely amnesiac. With no idea of who he is or what he's supposed to do, he starts looking for a home and an employment. He manages to rent a "house" in the city outskirts (don't miss Sakari Kuosmanen as the landlord) and befriends Irma (Kati Outinen), a social worker who tries to help M (in lack of a better name, and given "X" is quite overused) as much as possible. It is this friendship, which slowly evolves into something deeper, that truly motivates the protagonist in his pursuit of a better life.
The Man Without a Past strikes us because, unlike other films involving amnesia, it makes us hope M won't recover his memory: what he experiences throughout the movie, the people he meets, that's what really matters. It's a little bit like a road movie (they never end with the characters reaching their destination), only this time the voyage involves the mind and the spirit. It's a similar voyage the director asks the audience to join, as he artfully explores human life and its chances of improvement.
Moving and reminiscent of Italian neorealism (De Sica, Rossellini, Visconti), The Man Without a Past is a flawless reflection on how happiness is to be found anywhere, no matter the circumstances.

Sorry for the long delay. Just don't like seeing my name next to the thread there. OK, time to make two quick picks, will update later.
Team Lucky the Donkey selects:
Spike Lee's terribly underrated He Got Game in the Sports category. Denzel is great in this one as an overbearing uber-coach of a dad (not to mention being in jail). Ray Allen does an amazing job for being a professional athlete who'd never acted. Love it.
We will also take Newsies in the Musical category. I know a young Christian Bale is in this, so that's probably good. And it didn't make me want to claw my eyes out immediately when I thought about it, which is a requirement for a musical. I just asked a girl I work with to peruse the draft board and find a musical that wasnt listed that was good. Sorry, I don't know jack about them.
As our 16th round pick, team Selfmade Heroes picks Mies vailla menneisyyttä (The Man Without A Past) (2002) in the Foreign Category.
Sounds like a must-see Itse! I will have to check it out and let you know what I think. Maybe it was the mention of De Sica's Bicycle Thieves in that review you quoted that sole me. :D

In the category of Sports team Yippie-Kay-Yay is super-de-duper happy to select the amazing awesome incredible bowling movie:
Kingpin
http://www.lazydork.com/movies/kingpin.jpg
Bill Murray, Woody Harrelson & Randy Quaid are awesome!
In the '70s, Roy Munsen (Woody Harrelson) was a bowling phenomenon. He was none too sharp about picking friends, though, and the champion he had to beat, "Big Ern," takes him under his supposedly friendly wing. Big Ern (Bill Murray) shows him the high-living lifestyle, and induces him to go on the road with him, hustling small-town bowlers. A couple of the men he bilks take exception to the scam, and show their displeasure with Roy by mangling his hand. Twenty years later, Roy (who now has a hook in place of his hand), earns his living as a salesman. On a visit to a bowling alley, he cannot help but notice the incredible talents of an Amish boy, Ishmael (Randy Quaid). Bowling is not part of the Amish lifestyle, but Ishmael occasionally sneaks into the bowling alley and plays a frame or two. Roy takes Ishmael under his wing, and together they begin a quest for bowling success. This comedy is directed by Peter and Robert Farrelly, who also directed Dumb and Dumber.

Wildcard #3 for Team NC-17, The Blair Witch Project. The film that made many get motion sickness in theaters. While most of the film was laughable, the last 10 minutes of the movie, mainly taking place in the abandoned house, was absolutely blood curdling.
- The actors were given no more than a 35-page outline of the mythology behind the plot before shooting began. All lines were improvised and nearly all the events in the film were unknown to the three actors beforehand, and were often on-camera surprises to them all.
- Some theatergoers experienced nausea from the handheld camera movements and actually had to leave to vomit. In some Toronto theatres, ushers asked patrons who where prone to motion sickness to sit in the aisle seat and to try not to "throw up on other people."
- When promoting the film, the producers claimed it was real footage. Some people still believe it.
- Before the film was released, the three main actors were listed as "missing, presumed dead" on the IMDb.
- One of the video cameras used by the actors was bought at Circuit City. After filming was completed, the producers returned the camera for a refund, making their budget money go even further.
- This film was in the Guinness Book Of World Records for "Top Budget:Box Office Ratio" (for a mainstream feature film). The film cost $22,000 to make and made back $240.5 million, a ratio of $1 spent for every $10,931 made.
- This film uses the f-word 154 times.
- In a scene where the main actors are sleeping in a tent at night, the tent suddenly shakes violently and they all get scared. This was unscripted and the director shook the tent; they were really scared.
- When the movie was released the town of Burkittsville, in the hopes of making at least some profit from the film, did its own marketing. During the annual summer carnival the local Ruritan Club featured the "Bur-Witch" sandwich - country fried ham and a fried egg on top of a cheeseburger, nestled in a sesame seed bun, and doused with horseradish. The sandwich was the most popular selling item on the menu two years in a row.
It was an absolute cult classic. If you've never heard of the Blair Witch, where the hell have you been?

I guess I call it laughable, cause I didn't see the movie until it came out on VHS. For those of you who don't know what VHS is, it's those big bulky black tape plastic things that go into a machine called a VCR. And at the end of the movie, you have to rewind it.

^^ Maybe that's the difference. I had heard about it before it came out, and was told it was real footage, true story, but right when it came out, I found out it wasn't. I didn't see it until a few weeks after it had been released. My friends all swore it was terrifying, even though it wasn't "real" footage. They really built up my expectations, but I was pretty bored with it, until the ending.

The Blair Witch Project. A movie that was built on the myth about it being real. The movie itself wasn't scary until the final sequence and the visuals went way and beyond trying to be amateurish. I have to admit though that the first time I saw this movie I was on the edge of my seat. This was the last movie I saw at the Drive In close to Forest Lawn there. The fact that it was raining and lightning made the experience of this movie seem that much more real.

I saw the BWP at the Corral 4 Drive-In as well - yeah, that would have been right before the Hub disaster ruined it, so I guess that was my last drive-in movie. Back half of the double feature, I am pretty sure I slept through parts of it. For some reason the only part of the movie I ever really remember is at the beginning, when they are shopping for supplies and the girl filming pushes the lens of the camera into a bag of marshmellows.

Team Pineapple Express is proud to select in the category of Documentary/Non Fiction the film, Sharkwater (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0856008/#comment) (2006).
Like many others, I have always had a fascination with sharks, I've always wanted to go shark diving, I watch as much of Shark Week as I can, as well as any other materials I can find. I caught this one by accident on the movie channel, and got quite wrapped up in it.
A somewhat lengthy synopsis from IMDB:
For filmmaker Rob Stewart, exploring sharks began as an underwater adventure. What it turned into was a beautiful and dangerous life journey into the balance of life on earth. Driven by passion fed from a life-long fascination with sharks, Stewart debunks historical stereotypes and media depictions of sharks as bloodthirsty, man-eating monsters and reveals the reality of sharks as pillars in the evolution of the seas. Sharkwater takes you into the most shark rich waters of the world, exposing the exploitation and corruption surrounding the world's shark populations in the marine reserves of Cocos Island, Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. In an effort to protect sharks, Stewart teams up with renegade conservationist Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Their unbelievable adventure together starts with a battle between the Sea Shepherd and shark poachers in Guatemala, resulting in pirate boat rammings, gunboat chases, mafia espionage, corrupt court systems and attempted murder charges, forcing them to flee for their lives. Through it all, Stewart discovers these magnificent creatures have gone from predator to prey, and how despite surviving the earth's history of mass extinctions, they could easily be wiped out within a few years due to human greed. Stewart's remarkable journey of courage and determination changes from a mission to save the world's sharks, into a fight for his life, and that of humankind
I'll admit to not really enjoying Rob Stewart all that much, but the film itself is actually quite stirring, and visually impressive.
To any that might go watch it, there are a number of animal cruelty images in it, so if that makes you squirm, don't watch.
Here's the trailer:
There is some footage that may be a bit disturbing for some, so there's your word of caution.

Some trivia:
Pre-production work revolved around Brian Froud (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0296612/)'s designs without a finished script. When Froud originally presented Jim Henson (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001345/) with concept drawings for the crystal, Henson seemed totally perplexed. When Froud asked why, Henson said he had no idea what the designs were for. As it turned out, Froud had misunderstood Henson during early production conversations -- Henson intended the film to be called "The Dark Chrysalis," referring to the Skesis dominance over the world. Henson, however, loved the concept art and integrated the idea of the crystal into the storyline.
Early drafts of the script featured Jen and Kira traveling through the underworld where they encountered a race of underground mining creatures. This concept was later integrated by Jim Henson (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001345/) into "Fraggle Rock" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085017/) (1983) and served as the partial basis for the story of The Power of the Dark Crystal (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0460907/) (2009).
Jim Henson (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0378214/) personally trimmed twenty minutes from the film after a disastrous preview in San Francisco. Henson also ordered many of the character voices re-dubbed to eliminate some of the invented character languages to make the film more accessible and the plot easier to follow.

going wayyyyyyy off the board for my documentary piece. I saw this a very long time ago and only once. It was nominated for an Oscar in 1980 but most people have never heard of it. My selection is Luther Metke at 94. It is a documentary on my great great uncle who built log cabins into his 90s (he lived to be 100). I never met him, but knew his brother, my great grandfather (who lived to the age of 90).
I really have to try to track down a copy of this.
Wiki rules, here's their take on him:
Luther Metke (February 20 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/February_20), 1883 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1883) – April 24 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_24), 1983 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1983)) was an American folk poet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_poetry). He served in the Spanish American War (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_American_War) and was a representative of the American Veterans Committee (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Veterans_Committee). He was the subject of Jorge Preloran (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jorge_Preloran&action=edit&redlink=1)'s Academy Award (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award) nominated documentary Luther Metke at 94 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luther_Metke_at_94).
Metke was brought up on a homestead in Minnesota (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minnesota). He started building log cabins as a young boy, helping other homesteaders, and imigrant families build homes. He enrolled in the US Navy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Navy) in 1898, at the age of 15, saw battle in the Spanish American War (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_American_War), served in the Philippines (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippines), Japan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan), and China (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China). During an expedition up the Yangtze river (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yangtze_river), Metke saw the impact that deforestation and uncontrolled logging could have on the environment; this experience would strongly influence his poetry.
Metke returned from service on the battleship Oregon in 1907, at the age of 24. He purchased a homestead in Central Oregon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Oregon), on the current site of the Sun River Resort (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sun_River_Resort&action=edit&redlink=1). He was a lumberjack, used the two-man saw to fall giant pines, some measuring six feet across, and floated them down the river for sale to mills in Bend, Oregon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bend,_Oregon). Metke also built log cabins and bridges, a craft he remembered from his youth in Minnesota: he wrote that "a man never forgets how to use the old broad axe", the log-cabin building tool of choice for Metke. It is estimated that he built over 40 log homes in Central Oregon (including the grand lodge at Sun River Resort) and built practically every bridge across the Deschutes River (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deschutes_River_(Oregon)). In the 1920s, Metke became a labor organizer, an advocate of labor unions and better working conditions for workers in the logging industry. Metke's years spent homesteading, as a lumberjack and woodsman shaped another of his personal facets and would strongly influence his poetry.
In 1967, Metke settled in Camp Sherman, Oregon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camp_Sherman,_Oregon) on the Metolius River (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metolius_River). By then he was known in Central Oregon as a rugged individualist, an environmentalist and a master builder of fine log cabins. No-one suspected however, that Metke was also a poet, and for a good reason: he seldom shared his poetry, never attempted to publish it and shied away from his public image. In fact, he had little regard for poets: "Poems I write have a meaning; they're not about babbling brooks and such" or newspaper and television reporters: "they want to make a hero out of somebody that has no business being one". Though it is unknown when Metke really did start writing poetry, he claimed he started in the 1970s as a means to communicate with his grandchildren. His poems touched on issues ranging from man's relationship with God, nature and aging. His poems aren't regarded as exceptional by literary standards, but express with crushing clarity a way of life that was his and that has vanished: living in harmony with God and nature. Only 12 of his poems have ever been published - these were presented in a documentary - his other poems were destroyed late in his life.
Luther Metke at 94 was produced by Jorge Preloran (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jorge_Preloran&action=edit&redlink=1) and was nominated for an Academy Award (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award). It won six film festival awards including first place at the Atlanta Film Festival and the Silver Certificate at the Birmingham International Educational Film Festival. It was funded by the National Endowment for the Arts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Endowment_for_the_Arts). Luther Metke at 94 documents Metke building his last log cabin, in Camp Sherman (on Metke Lane) at the age of 94 and includes several of his poems

In the Wildcard category, 6DTM is proud to select In Bruges.
I loved this film. My wife did too, and has been telling me for a few rounds that I should pick it. Never thought I'd be picking a Colin Farrell film, but he holds his own in a small cast that includes Ralph Fiennes and Brendan Gleeson (one of my favorite character actors from Britain and Ireland along with Pete Postlethwaite and Timothy Spall). Ebert wonderfully describes him here as 'that noble shambles of a face and the heft of a boxer gone to seed.'
http://www.playbackstl.com/images/stories/films/film_in-bruges.jpg
Martin McDonagh's script is overwhelmingly dark and funny, but for a semi-comedy about hit-men, the violence is surprisingly sparse and non-gratuitous. Each death is morally weighted. Nobody, not even these hitmen or their bosses take killing lightly, and the weight of their actions is heavy on each, especially Farrell. McDonagh's footage of Bruges is spectacularly beautiful and fairy-tale-like, but Farrell's unceasing contempt for the city offsets this: I think most people who have backpacked in Europe can relate to the experience of ending up in a city that is as pretty as a postcard, but which just rubs you the wrong way.
It's a film that got a lot of mixed reviews when it came out: hated by some, but likely due to make lofty appearances on best-of-2008 lists in other circles. I'm firmly in the 'love it' camp though; the second best film I've seen this year.

With the 426th pick DVD-eh? selects in the foreign category, from japan:
Death note
A live action movie based on the manga and anime series by the same name.
The series is about Light Yagami (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_Yagami), a young man who resents the crime and corruption in the world. His life undergoes a drastic change when he discovers a mysterious notebook, known as the "Death Note", lying on the ground. The Death Note's instructions claim that if a human's name is written within it, that person shall die. Light is initially skeptical of the notebook's authenticity, but after experimenting with it, Light realizes that the Death Note is real. After meeting with the previous owner of the Death Note, a shinigami (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shinigami_(Death_Note)) named Ryuk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shinigami_(Death_Note)#Ryuk), Light seeks to become "the God of the New World" by passing his judgement on those he deems to be evil or who get in his way.
Soon, the number of inexplicable deaths of reported criminals catches the attention of the international police organization and a mysterious detective known only as "L (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L_(Death_Note))". L quickly learns that the serial killer, dubbed by the public as "Kira", is located in Japan. L also concludes that Kira can kill people without laying a finger on them. Light realizes that L will be his greatest nemesis, and a game of psychological cat and mouse between the two begins.

With my first Wildcard pick, because I'm in the Halloween mood, Team MissTeeks selects Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow.
I love this movie, it's one of my favorite Tim Burton flicks. I have to watch it every Halloween. It has such a creepy and dark feel to it and Christopher Walken is extremely frightening with his filed down teeth and without saying a word. The sets are wonderful, very creepy and it has a great cast. Johnny Depp is great as the twitchy Ichabod Crane and the somewhat cheesey decapitation scenes are always entertaining.
Synopsis:
1799: Ichabod Crane is a constable from New York who is most concerned with all the new scientific gadgets that will allow him to do his job better. However, he is quite squeamish about his latest assignment: traveling to the town of Sleepy Hollow, where there have been a series of murders involving people whose heads have been cut off. The locals believe it is the work of the legendary Headless Horseman. Ichabod does not believe this, but with the help of the fair Katrina Van Tassel and the young son of one of the victims, he uncovers some very interesting evidence that would suggest otherwise.

Well, I have to say that I have had a really tough time trying to decide on my final genre pick. In addition to waffling over a few other possibilities, I have been wanting to include a film made within the last couple of years and had a choice that fit nicely, but perhaps now that we have the extra wildcard slots I will drop that film there and go with this one, which in all truth I just thought of last night (and indeed, I think it will prove the most recently released movie on my roster):
In the Thriller category, Team Clint Eastwood selects American Psycho (2000).
"There is a moment of sheer panic when I realize that Paul's apartment overlooks the Park - and is obviously more expensive than mine."
http://thisdistractedglobe.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/12/American%20Psycho%202000%20poster.jpg
This movie is a very competent and well-executed adaptation of the controversial (and indeed, much more gratuitous) novel by Bret Easton Ellis, directed - suitably enough IMO - by a woman, Mary Harron. It features a starmaking performance by Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman, the title character - a well-schooled, materialistic homicidal Wall Street suit who fears his "nightly bloodlust" may invade his daily lifestyle. Harron does a fantastic job of authentically translating some of the more entertaining passages from the book to the screen; a sequence where Bateman and his colleagues compare their business cards (see clip at the end!), for example, is hilarious, ominously lit and scored with dark tones, while Bale's character struggles to maintain his composure as he obsesses over a coworker's card. The cast is great, and the film is a darkly amusing, macabre satire that is set in the 1980s, but equally relevant - if not moreso - today.
I'll stop short of getting into a thorough analysis of the content of this story - there is a lot that could be discussed and I feel that there are several ways that the material can be interpreted. Does Bateman kill because of his jealousy and competitiveness, or is he morally bankrupt and empty? Does he even kill at all? Is the story misogynistic or is the approach to women in American Psycho a reflection of the homsexual subtext of Ellis' novel? Harron downplays on the content of the latter - and omits entirely the most gruesome parts from the book that involve female characters, for obvious reasons - and I continue to wonder how this differently this film would have been received in the hands of a male director (*edit* - evidently David Cronenberg was to direct at one point, with Brad Pitt starring... very interesting).
The thing that most fascinates me about this movie is the dichotomy it creates between the comforts of Bateman's daily routines - his morning rituals, exercise regimens, spa schedule - and the horrors of the violent acts he engages in. Patrick Bateman is simultaneously the good and the bad guy of the story - and Bale does a mesmerizing job of creating a character that we can sympathize with in either role; in the end, the question is - is he the victim?
Mary Harron's great achievement as the director here, IMO, is that she does such a fine job of making the transition between the novel and the screen seem so effortless and natural; the pages seem to come alive and Harron wonderfully captures the twisted spirit of Ellis' book. This movie is not notable for any virtuoso camerawork or excessive artistic stylization; the thrust of it comes from subtle cues and most of all, from Christian Bale's superb performance. Lots to like here - American Psycho is one of my favorites.

In the Thriller category, Team Clint Eastwood selects American Psycho
Though I really enjoyed Christian Bale's performance I ddin't think the movie itself was all that great. There were way too many little nuances that the character has in the book that were missed in the movie.

KELLY'S HEROES (1970)

This is an offbeat war romp starring, among others, one of my favs, Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas, Don Rickles, and Donald Sutherland as the oddest soldier ever to serve in WW2, the aptly named "Oddball". It's directed by Brian Hutton who also directed another member of my team, "Where Eagles Dare". Fun film.

With our 16th round pick, 432nd overall, The Team With No Name is proud to select as our Wildcard #1, A River Runs Through It.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105265/
Beautiful story, beautiful scenery and beautiful sport. There is nothing that I don't like about this film. Adapted from Norman Maclean's book, it is the story of two Montana brothers and the different paths their lives take in 1920's Montana. This film won the 1993 Oscar for best cinematography and was shot on location in and around Livingston and Bozeman, MT though the story takes place in Missoula.
This is one of Brad Pitt's finest performances in a career that I think includes many fine performances. His portrayal of Paul Maclean is beautiful, in a way. He is a man consumed by demons, and the grandeur of his homeland. Pitt really makes that come through on screen.
The movie was directed and narrated by Robert Redford, and he was great in both roles.
Perhaps the best thing about this movie is the beautifully shot flyfishing scenes. All real.
Honestly, this is one of my top 5 movies of all time. I love it that much. I don't expect it to rank that highly for others as no doubt much of my affinity for it comes from the commonality of being madly in love with the part of the world I was born in (similarly to Paul Maclean) and my love of getting lost in the majesty of the Rocky Mountains and the love of family.
I highly recommend Maclean's books.

I love, love, love this movie! One of the best dark comedies ever made, IMO and the film that made me a Vince Vaughn fan. Without Clay Pigeons, I wouldn't have experienced the goodness that is Made and Swingers!
It's the story of a serial killer who befriends a small town mechanic who winds up suspected of the murders himself. It's very small town....everybody knows everybody and their business. The movie plays on that very well.
Great performances by Vaughn, Joaquin Phoenix, Janeane Garofalo and Scott Wilson. Georgina Cates also turns in a wicked performance that really makes the movie sizzle.
Directed by David Dobkin.
Just good fun...and Vince Vaughn.....too good.

I've always been an Indy fan and I actually contemplated taking Raiders with my first pick. Shawshank is much too good to let that happen though. So, I'll take the 2nd best Jones movie. This is a pure, old fashioned Saturday matinee adventure escapism. It's what movies are all about. Speilberg owed the fans this one after the Temple of Doom debacle and he delivered in spades. I'm glad to be able to add this solid contender to my team at such a late stage, and my second 'grail' movie too!

This is basically a movie where nothing much happens. It's one of my favorite lazy day movies to watch because it doesn't require much thinking. It stars several actors who would become way more famous later in their careers, Liv Tyler and Renee Zellweger. It's got a good 90's soundtrack and always makes me laugh.
Synopsis:
Empire Records is going to be turned into a Music Town. It is up to the wacky employees to figure out a way to raise enough money to help their boss Joe keep the store from changing hands. They also deal with problems amongst themselves, love, and a has-been spoiled rock star named Rex Manning.

In the Wildcard category 6DTM is proud to select the all-time greatest teen movie, Ferris Beuller's Day Off.
Matthew Broderick is endearing as a teen for whom everything comes easy, but for me the strength of the film is the storyline that follows Cameron (played by Alan Ruck) as the repressed best friend. Add in great moments with Jennifer Grey and Charlie Sheen, Ben Stein, and the recently troubled Jeffrey Jones, and it's one of the most entertaining films of the 1980s.

In the 17th round of the CP Movie Draft, Direct2Video selects Fritz Lang's M (1931) in the Foreign category.
http://www.medienkunstnetz.de/assets/img/data/2729/bild.jpg
Some really great quotes about "M" by Roger Ebert:
When you watch "M,'' you see a hatred for the Germany of the early 1930s that is visible and palpable...the entire movie consists of men seen in shadows, in smokefilled dens, in disgusting dives, in conspiratorial conferences.
Many early talkies felt they had to talk all the time, but Lang allows his camera to prowl through the streets and dives, providing a rat's-eye view. One of the film's most spectacular shots is utterly silent, as the captured killer is dragged into a basement to be confronted by the city's assembled criminals, and the camera shows their faces: hard, cold, closed, implacable.

With our 17 rd. pick, we are proud to select, in one of our Wildcard categories... Jim Carrey's magnum opus - a performance that should go down in history as one of the worst snubs in oscar history... A film showing a downright creepy amount of foresight, offering a glimpse into the extreme extension of our current obsession with the "reality" of "real" people. An underrated film from an underrated director, featuring an underrated and under-appreciated performance... 1998's The Truman Show!
http://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/pic/153/862249%7EThe-Truman-Show-Posters.jpg
What I love most in the Truman show is the subtleties. The nuances of performance and direction in the quiet moments. They contrast brilliantly as the subtext to the exaggerated phoniness of Truman's world and his persona within it. Ed Harris was also brilliant in this movie, playing the creepy yet sympathetic God-like figure with great success. The music in Truman is some of the best you'll hear, as well.
Just a phenomenal film all around.

Darn, had that as one of my Wildcard picks. Definitely one of my favorite Jim Carrey movies, and one that I could watch over and over again (and do). This movie was definitely ahead of its time, and kind of spooky how a lot of the "out of this world" aspects of it have actually come true on the television screen since.
Also have to echo the love for Ed Harris. The part was originally held by Anthony Hopkins, but he had to back out and so Harris came on, learned the lines, researched the character, and shot his scenes...in two days. Really great job.
And Carrey...he proved so much with this movie. Really, it was the perfect fit for him to come out of his comedy-shell.
"And in case I don't see you: good afternoon, good evening, and goodnight!"

Alright here's my next pick, brought to you by Fall-Back Extra Hour Madness.
So, I have decided that I am going to go with a B-movie selection for my first wildcard pick, because... well, just for fun, I guess. To start off with, let us define "B-movie". According to the omniscient wikipedia.org, there are at least two definitions that I think fit the movie I am selecting here today:
1. "A B movie is a low-budget commercial motion picture conceived neither as an arthouse film nor as pornography." (link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B_movie))
2. "A B movie is a low-budget genre film designed to play before a main feature or, in modern use, a low-budget film with modest artistic aspirations or of an unconventional, energetic style." (link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B-Movie_(disambiguation)))
I feel that my selection can be defined within the B-movie genre using the following selectively-designed amalgam of the above two definitions: "a low-budget motion picture with modest artistic aspirations, conceived as pornography." My pick for Wildcard #1 is the 1992 film Blown Away, starring Corey Feldman and Haim, and Nicole Eggert from TV's Baywatch. Most people here will recognize the Coreys - Feldman actually had some respectability for a while in the 80s; I think Haim's best work came in The Lost Boys - but I doubt many will have seen this trashy gem. I am picking it because I want to add a crappy movie to my team, and this movie is definitely crap - but it's endearing crap. I have seen it a few times over the years and although it is mystifying for its incoherence and stunningly bad acting, it is a great way to veg out for an hour and a half, most of which is given over to sex scenes.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/0/06/Blown_Away_Corey_Haim.jpg/200px-Blown_Away_Corey_Haim.jpg
"You know, Megan, you're turning into the same lying slut your mother was."
The plot: a woman dies in a fiery crash on a girl's (Eggert) birthday; girl turns into a slut; two brothers (Coreys) working at a ski resort become entangled in a web of deceit and unnecessary twists; girl gets naked and has a lot of sex; more absurd twists; laughs ensue.
Some of the things I love about Blown Away:
- car chase scene highly reminiscent (read: identical) to the one that takes place in Basic Instinct - which was released the same year and in fact has a very similar, albeit much more competently-conceived (not saying much), plot
- Coreys beat each other up and both get a black eye on the same eye.
- Corey Haim hides from Nicole Eggert's father by hanging off the edge of a third-storey balconey, which he then lets himself drop off of and walks away unharmed.
- in spite of a growing body count, authorities are unable to piece together a case and are indeed eventually written out of the equation entirely
- seemingly numberless unprovoked sex scenes entailing innumerable naked shots of Nicole Eggert, who was pretty hot in 1992
- really bad 'special effects' - fulfilling the "low-budget" aspect of its b-movie categorization (according to the trivia page on imdb, the car bomb sequence was lampooned at the 1992 MTV awards as a fake 'Best Explosion')
- Dialogue such as the following:
Megan (Eggert): What was the worst day of your life?
Corey Haim: That's a pretty morbid question right after mindblowing sex.
Megan: I wouldn't call that mindblowing.
Corey Haim: Oh gee, thanks.
The way this movie alludes to the asinine twists and turns it is obviously going to take is hilarious: witness one such scene where Haim introduces Eggert to Feldman, who is shown to be harboring some kind of malevolence with a slow-mo shot of him exhaling cigarette smoke (if you're like me, trying to see past Corey Feldman as the kid with glasses from Stand By Me orMouth from Goonies is an exercise in futility). The fact that this movie was remade in 1994 using entirely different actors and a completely different story (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109303/) should certainly be proof enough of how awful it truly is. Nevertheless, I am proud to add it to my team as a symbol of a bygone era of cinema - an homage to that once-illustrious Erotic Thriller section at the back of Blockbuster Video that for some reason never had any tapes in stock... I wonder why.
As to what this movie is about, or what it means on its own terms - your guess is as good as mine. I think that's the point.
...and the question you're probably asking - the answer is YES! It is on youtube (by request, apparently).

I figured if TSN and Sportsnet show it, it's a sport. Could have gone with a bunch of other ideas, but I liked Rounders, and seems like when I play poker, it's always brought up.
Plus, with such an amazing cast (Damon, Norton, Malkovich, etc), hard not to try and snag it.

With our first Wildcard selection team Yippie-Kay-Yay is please to select in our opinion the greatest embodiment of the Holiday season:

http://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/pic/PYR/NECA0001%7EA-Christmas-Story-Posters.jpghttp://buttonmashing.com/wp-content/uploads/bunny-suit.jpg
It is the Christmas season in Northern Indiana and Ralphie, a young boy growing up in the '40's, dreams of owning a Red Rider BB gun. The movie revolves around this pursuit and how Ralphie tries to overcome the obstacles in obtaining this gift, mainly in the form of adults who bleat "You'll Shoot Your Eye Out!" He sets out to convince the world this is the perfect gift along the way, he runs into opposition from his parents, his teacher, and even good 'ol Santa Claus himself.

But I love when Ralphies mom gets on the phone with the mom of the kid Ralphie says told him the bad word, and you can hear the kid getting creamed on the other end. Brings me to tears every time.
On the way back from getting the tree, the tire blew out, The Old Man lost the bolts and Ralphie has said the ”F” word
Mother: [ Takes soap out of Ralphie’s mouth ] All right… where did you hear that word?
Ralphie [ Narrating ] Now I had heard that word at least 10 times a day from my old man. My father worked in profanity the way other artists would work in oils or clay. It was his true medium, a master. But… I chickened out, and I blurted out the first name that came to mind:
Ralphie as kid: SCHWARTZ!
Mother: Oh… I see. [ Puts soap back into Ralphies mouth, goes to phone, calls out Mrs. Schwartz ]
Mother: Hello, Mrs. Schwartz? Yes. I’m fine. Um… Mrs. Schwarts, do you know what Ralph just said?
Mrs. Schwartz: [ On phone, indistinct ]
Mother: No. He said… [ Whispers curse word ]
Mrs. Schwartz: NO! NOT THAT!
Mother: Yes, that. Do you know where he heard it?
Mrs. Schwartz: Probably from his father.
Mother: NO! HE HEARD IT FROM YOUR SON!
Mrs. Schwartz: WHAAAAT?! WHAAAT?! WHAAAAAAAT?!
[ Sound of footsteps, spanking sound, screaming sound ]
BTW - If CP wants to get me a Christmas gift, here it is - only $250.00

Sounds like a must-see Itse! I will have to check it out and let you know what I think. Maybe it was the mention of De Sica's Bicycle Thieves in that review you quoted that sole me. :D
Hey, if I get someone to see Aki Kaurismäki films, I'm always delighted :) Such a brilliant filmmaker.
If you like Bicycle Thieves, Kaurismäki-films are propably not a waste of time. Tulitikkutehtaan tyttö (The Match Factory Girl) is also one of my favourites, although it's a lot more cynical and has about the least dialogue I've ever seen in a non-silent film. (I believe the first piece of dialogue is spoke at about the half-hour mark.)
Anyway, time for me to make a pick, and if I'm right and this hasn't been picked yet, I'm simply stunned.
First, I'll move Bound from Drama to Wildcard #3 (we got more of those now, right?).
As our 17th round pick, the surprisingly accurately named Selfmade Heroes is delighted to pick Stand By Me (1986) in the Drama category.
Gordie (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000696/): Do you think I'm weird?
Chris (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000203/): Definitely.
Gordie (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000696/): No man, seriously. Am I weird?
Chris (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000203/): Yeah, but so what? Everybody's weird.
Not seeing this film should be made a criminal offense for everyone who has ever been twelve years old, more so for those who have been twelve year old boys.
It's the only really good depiction of childhood I remember ever seeing, the only one that manages to capture what childhood felt like. (And I can't emphasize enough how good it feels to see it in pictures.) It was such a different time, and yet if you knew someone in that age, you'll know them forever.
Stand by Me is a rare gem among films, so perfect in style, with great acting and excellent writing (among the only things by Stephen King I actually like).
The basic story is really simple: four young boys, driven mostly by curiousity and a sense of adventure, set out to find the body of another kid, apparently hit by a train somewhere in the woods.
The kids are a wonderfully archetypical collection. Gordie (Wil Wheaton) is sensitive, intelligent and painfully ignored by his parents. Gordie's best friend Chris (River Phoenix) is the leader with the bad family background who feels he'll never get out of the town. Teddy (Corey Feldman) is the weird kid who obsesses over his abusive father. Vern (Jerry O'Connel), the fat one is "the easy target", the one with more imagination than brains, but nevertheless a part of gang just like everyone else. All roles are played to perfection by kids only a few years older than the actual characters, and supported by a equally good actors, most notably Kiefer Sutherland as the leader of an older gang of bullies and Richard Dreyfuss as The Writer who provides us with the voiceover as he's telling us this story from his own childhood.
Teddy (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000397/): I'm sorry if I'm spoiling everybody's good time.
Chris (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000203/): Its ok, man.
Gordie (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000696/): I'm not sure it should be a good time.
Chris (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000203/): You saying you wanna go back?
Gordie (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000696/): No. But going to see a dead kid... maybe it shouldn't be a party.

The part at the end, where Phoenix' character waves goodbye before he vanishes off the screen while Dreyfuss narrates his untimely demise, is all the more poignant given River Phoenix' actual death.
Stand By Me is definitely a great film; incredible that both it and The Shawshank Redemption (as well as the underrated Apt Pupil, to make 3) came from the same book - a collection of 4 SK novellas. Talk about a golden goose.

This film was like all 3 Lord of the Rings movies wrapped in one, in that it was fresh, sweeping in its scope and full of breathtaking cinematography.
Not a lot of time for a write-up now, but this was a movie I enjoy every time I watch - it was imho the best of the Narnia books and its charm will not be easily matched in any future films (as we have already seen in the sequel Prince Caspian). You should check out the special edition, titled: restored to Orson Welles' vision. Being the temperamental person that Welles was, he delivered only a rough cut of the movie to the studio who then re-edited and re-shot some parts, making a crappy version of the movie for release. Touch of Evil was finally re-edited in 1998 by Walter Murch, who followed the notes written by Welles in a 58 page memo that he wrote after watching the theatrical release.

For my next pick, team Hot Buttery Topping selects in the first Wildcard category, the movie that made Tom Cruise a star, Risky Business.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/3/33/Risky_Business.jpg/200px-Risky_Business.jpg
Cruise plays Joel, a Chicago high school student with aspirations of attending Princeton, but the grades to attend the University of Illinois.
Joel's parents go on vacation, leaving him alone in the big house, with a booming stereo system and a Porsche in the garage.
Joel's friend Miles (Curtis Armstrong) calls and orders an "escort" to Joel's house one night. The escort is not what Joel had in mind, but "she" knows someone who's just "what every white boy off the lake wants." Lana (the super-hot Rebecca De Mornay) comes to Joel's house, they have sex, and a string of misadventures begins...leading to Joel needed to raise a lot of money to pay for significant repairs to his father's Porsche, while avoiding physical harm at the hands of Lana's pimp, Guido (Joe Pantoliano).
The solution to Joel's problem is to get Joel's friends together with Lana's friends, essentially turning his parents suburban home into a high school brothel for the night.
The movie is probably most famous for one of the most parodied/imitated scenes in movie history...
ilaUVGjMkJo
As I said, this is the movie that made the 21 year-old Cruise a star. His on-screen charisma turned this movie from a standard high school "gotta get laid" movie into one of the quintessential films of the 1980s.

The MacGuffins select, after much deliberation (so many great movies still unpicked!), with their pick in the 17th round, for entry in the Wildcard #3 slot:
Rashomon
It's human to lie. Most of the time we can't even be honest with ourselves.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y28/djroach/rashomon.jpg
I was first introduced to Kurosawa's films while living in Kelowna, BC. I went to school there for one year, and during that time there was a local video store that had all the classics and tons of foreign films went out of business. The university library bought a huge number of VHS tapes and DVDs from the store, and made them available to students. So in my downtime in between classes, I retreated into the library a couple times per week and watched all the Hitchcock/Welles/Bergman/Fellini/etc. I possibly could.
Rashomon was the first Kurosawa movie I watched, and I immediately went on a binge fest of his movies because I enjoyed it so much. It helped open my eyes to the fact that some of the quirky cinematic storytelling techniques employed by contemporary directors like Oliver Stone and Quentin Tarantino were in fact not new and revolutionary, but had been pioneered by master directors like Kurosawa years earlier. It also helped me to elevate "foreign" (ie/ subtitled movies) to "equal" status in my mind; previously, I had occasionally avoided them because I didn't want to "read" a movie. But Rashomon was so good, and the "subititle/foreign factor" so insignificant to the experience, that I became much more exploratory within the realm of world cinema.
Rashomon is simple tale of a horrendous crime discvoered by a village commoner, and the complex unravelling of several different first-hand accounts of that crime, told in flashbacks by all the parties involved. Here is where the movie's brilliance takes shape- each of the accounts in decidedly different in its retelling of the events of the crime committed, yet each party claims to be the murderer, and it is therefore unlikely any of them are lying.
To borrow from Roger Ebert, who illustrates that point beautifully:
The genius of Rashomon is that all of the flashbacks are both true and false. True, in that they present an accurate portrait of what each witness thinks happened. False, because as Kurosawa observes in his autobiography, "Human beings are unable to be honest with themselves about themselves. They cannot talk about themselves without embellishing."
The wonder of Rashomon is that while the shadowplay of truth and memory is going on, we are absorbed by what we trust is an unfolding story. The film's engine is our faith that we'll get to the bottom of things--even though the woodcutter tells us at the outset he doesn't understand, and if an eyewitness who has heard the testimony of the other three participants doesn't understand, why should we expect to?
What a devastating blow to a moviegoer- to come to the understanding that the viewer cannot fully trust what the camera presents to him! This is Rashomon's gift to the world of cimema, the revelation that the camera reflects only a single point of view, and that that certain depiction of specific events may be manipulated, lied about, embellished, and/or distorted. In fact, like the phrase "Catch-22," the word "Rashomon" has come to represent in modern times the very situation depicted in the film, because it is such a unique phenomenon.
I mentioned earlier that I was not distracted by the subtitles one bit while watching this film, despite not having much experience with foreign films at that point. I must credit a great deal of that to the acting and visual style of the film, as it conveys a universal feel in its almost "silent-film" approach. The acting style is over-emphasized and heightened by the dramatic gestures and posture of the actors, the rain thunders to the ground, non-verbal cues by the actors are presented with great detail and attention, the shadows are accentuated, the point of view shots are made overtly obvious. It all fits seamlessly with the content of the film, and ironically, stands in direct contrast to the cloudiness surrounding the accuracy of the events told in the flashbacks. Of note is the performance by Kurosawa favorite Toshiro Mifune, who is simply mesmerizing.
Rashomon made Kurosawa an instant star, introduced millions to foreign and specifically Japanese cinema, laid the foundation for films like The Usual Suspects and Memento with its stylish gifts to the world of film, and has stood the test of time as one of the greatest films ever made. Although there isn't a finite conclusion regarding just exactly what happened in the forest, there is some resolution thematically and philosophically, specifically regarding the subjective nature of "truth" and "reality," and the very shortcomings of the human condition on the whole. Powerful stuff from a flawless film. The MacGuffins had plenty of more recent options in this spot, but couldn't pass up this work of art and time-tested masterpiece!

No argument there. Windom's is a much better clip, and it just reiterated my point that it's one of the most parodied scenes in movie history (and a much better example than Kobe et al).
Also, looking at them side by side, it's amazing how well they recreated the living room for the Guitar Hero commercials.

A movie which was bold enough to take on the subjects of homosexuality and AIDS when they were very touchy issues to talk about.

Wow Windom! Great turn right there!
Two awesome movies. I'm a Lynch fan, so Wild At Heart is a no brainer. The scene that really got me in that movie was the car wreck scene with Sherilyn Fenn (goddess) walking around in shock. What a great scene.
Jackie Brown was awesome other than the fact that I can't stand Bridget Fonda, especially when she's banging Robert DeNiro after smoking dope. Yuck. Really love Sam Jackson in this movie too.
Tilley, I'm a fan of Gangs of New York but it's a movie that gets a lot of ridicule around here. Daniel Day Lewis was incredible, as always, but I really found the film to be beautifully shot. The use of color was wonderful. Solid choice!

Great pick with Identity. Very underrated IMO. Ro, go ahead and pick, I won't be posting again until late tonight at the earliest. I will AK myself.
The MacGuffins happily select, with their pick in the 18th round, for entry in the Wildcard #4 category:
Donnie Brasco
When they send for you, you go in alive, you come out dead, and it's your best friend that does it.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y28/djroach/donnie_brasco.jpg
In the absence of a Crime/Gangster category, I felt it prudent to round out my team with a film of that ilk, and Donnie Brasco is possibly the most critically underrated movie of that genre in recent memory. It is constantly overlooked when discussing the best gangster movies of the last 30 years, and is a supremely involving and satisfying film.
The basic premise feels familiar- Depp is an undercover FBI agent who infiltrates the mob and befriends a gangster named Lefty. Great pains are taken by Donnie Brasco (Depp's new gangster alter ego) to ensure he gains the trust of Lefty, and is not "found out" by the very mafia family he rapidly ascends within. It is based on a true story detailed in Pistone's book Donnie Brasco: My Undercover Life in the Mafia.
Carried by a strong, understated performance by Depp and a brilliant, almost too easy bit of stylish acting by Pacino, Donnie Brasco distinguishes itself from many other gangster films of its era by focusing its attention on the emotional relationship between Lefty (Pacino) and and Joe/Donnie (Depp), and the evolution of the friendship and bond that develops between the two of them. Director Mike Newell handles the subject matter tremendously well, creating a sympathetic character in Pacino's Lefty, and deftly presenting the internal struggle Depp's "Donnie" goes through as his undercover assignment nears completion.
With only one true scene of gangster mayhem/violence, Donnie Brasco can't begin to compete with other popular gangster movies in that respect. But it doesn't have to- the tension created by Donnie's involvement in a world he knows nothing about is palpable, and perfectly accentuated by the exceptional acting of the two leads. When the climax hits, viewers feel conflicted because of the ease with which they have identified with Lefty, Donnie, and even the colorful world of crime and excess they are immersed in together. But its a satisfying feeling- one brought about by the compelling nature of the film. Donnie Brasco never fails to entertain me when I pop it in my DVD player, and is truly a wonderful, underappreciated film!

http://www.tarantinoitalia.altervista.org/Sito%20Immagini/TRUE%20ROMANCE/True%20Romance%20poster.jpg
After being panned by critics and politicians for being too violent in its nature, True Romance became a cult classic after it was released on video in 1993. With maybe the best ensemble casts in the last 20 years, True Romance is among my top 5 fav movies off all time. It's violent, funny, sad and in true Tarantino fashion has great dialogue. AND OF COURSE, THE SCENE!!
The Cast
Chrisitian Slater, Patricia Arquette, Christopher Walken, Dennis Hopper, Brad Pitt, Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Sizemore, Chris Penn, Val Kilmer, James Gandolfini, Michael Rappaport, Bronson Pinochet(any movie with Balki in it is good in my books) and a jaw dropping performance by Gary Oldman!!!

THE BELIEVER
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a311/dakios/TheBeliever.jpg
Censors feel they are safe with objectionable material but must protect others who are not as smart or moral. The same impulse tempts the reviewer of "The Believer (http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/classifieds?category=REVIEWS01&TITLESearch=The%20Believer&ToDate=20081231)." Here is a fiercely controversial film about a Jew who becomes an anti-Semite. When I saw it at Sundance 2001, where it won the Grand Jury Prize, I wrote "some feared the film could do more harm than good." I shared those fears. The film's hero is so articulate in his retailing of anti-Semitic beliefs that his words, I thought, might find the wrong ears. I understand the film, I was saying--but are you to be trusted with it? Certainly the movie has been a hot potato. After a screening at the Simon Wiesenthal Center inspired audience members to protest it, no major distributor would pick it up. Showtime scheduled it for a cable showing, which was canceled in the aftermath of 9/11. Then it was finally shown in the spring and now has theatrical distribution from small Fireworks Pictures. In the meantime, to its Sundance awards it has added Independent Spirit Awards for best screenplay and best first feature (both to director Henry Bean (http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/classifieds?category=search1&SearchType=1&q=Henry%20Bean&Class=%25&FromDate=19150101&ToDate=20081231)), best actor (Ryan Gosling (http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/classifieds?category=search1&SearchType=1&q=Ryan%20Gosling&Class=%25&FromDate=19150101&ToDate=20081231)) and best supporting actress (Summer Phoenix (http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/classifieds?category=search1&SearchType=1&q=Summer%20Phoenix&Class=%25&FromDate=19150101&ToDate=20081231)). Few doubt it is a good film. But do we really need a movie, right now, about a Jewish neo-Nazi? I am not the person to answer that question for you. You have to answer it for yourself. The film's anti-Semitism is articulate but wrong, and the conflict between what the hero says and what he believes (or does not want to believe) is at the very center of the story.

With Walk the Line leaving the Documentary category this left a big hole to fill and what better thing to fill a hole then a part, to be more specific Private Parts. The story of a little known DJ and his struggle to the top of the radio biz, maybe you heard of him, Howard Stern.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b8/Howard_Sterns_Private_Parts_Film_Poster.JPG
Having always wanted to be a disc-jockey, Howard Stern works his way painfully from radio at his 1970's college to a Detroit station. It is with a move to Washington that he hits on an outrageous off-the-wall style that catches audience attention. Despite his on-air blue talk, at home he is a loving husband. He needs all the support he can get when he joins NBC in New York and comes up against a very different vision of radio.

I love his performance in this movie, especially the way he portrays the character's struggle and duality. He was 18 or 20 I believe when they gave him the role and it definitely put him on the map as a young talent. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
http://thecia.com.au/reviews/k/images/kiss-kiss-bang-bang-2005-poster-2.jpg
The film is narrated by a small-time criminal, Harry Lockhart (Robert Downey Jr.). He is self-aware and talks to the audience at various times through the movie.
Running away from police after a botched robbery, Harry runs into a movie audition to escape and, ironically, impresses the producers. He is brought to Hollywood, where he meets homosexual private-eye "Gay" Perry von Shrike (Val Kilmer), who is enlisted to help Harry prepare for his role in the movie.
Harry is introduced to Hollywood parties and encounters his dream-girl, Harmony Lane (Michelle Monaghan); a girl Harry has known since childhood. The two childhood friends leave for Harry's apartment, but budding romance is squelched when Harry proceeds to drunkenly have sex with Harmony's friend.
Following around Perry at his job, Harry stumbles upon evidence of a complicated murder mystery eerily similar to the detective stories which Harry and Harmony grew up reading. The three team up to solve the mystery and encounter a series of seemingly nonsensical problems.

http://www.filmposters.it/imgposter/grandi/spiderman2.jpg
The story begins two years from where the previous film (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spider-Man_%28film%29) ends, and Peter Parker (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spider-Man) is finding his double life increasingly difficult. Precariously struggling to balance his crime-fighting duties with the demands of his normal life, Peter often finds his personal life taking a back seat. He loses a job, faces financial difficulties, and struggles to maintain his physics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physics) studies at Columbia University (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbia_University). Moreover, he has become estranged from both love interest Mary Jane (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Jane_Parker) and best friend Harry Osborn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Osborn), and Aunt May (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aunt_May) is threatened with foreclosure (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreclosure).

That's What She Said would like to call to the podium a true cinema classic - the zany yet endearing Bringing Up Baby, in the Black & White category. It was one of those screwball comedies from the 30's that didn't need to make sense, it worked because the characters draw you in - no matter how implausible the story becomes.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v710/Tavie/BringingUpBaby3.jpg
The story stars Susan (Katherine Hepburn) and David (Cary Grant) - two people who you would never put together but who come together out of determination (Susan's), necessity (David's) and luck. David is a paleontologist about to marry a fellow scientist, looking to bring in a grant to his museum and desperately seeking the final bone to finish putting together a Brontosaurus skeleton that he has worked on for the last four years. Susan meets David, and believing he's a zoologist rather than a paleontologist, pretty much stalks him to get him to come home with her and help her deal with Baby - a tame leopard sent by her brother as a gift. In all the action, Susan decides she loves David and does her best to keep him with her and away from his fiancee. Hijinks ensue when the bone is found (& lost), a wild leopard is mistaken for Baby and a sheriff claps them all in jail because he knows something sneaky is going on. If you have a chance, check it out on TMC or rent it some night when you want a fun, fluffy movie to eat popcorn in front of!

Sorry, I'm short of picks and I can't seem to find the time to think about this. Guess that means I'll have to go for an easy one:
for our 18th round pick, team Selfmade Heroes picks Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (aka Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror aka Nosferatu) (1922) in the Black & White category.
It's not one of my favourites, but I did enjoy quite a bit and it's a great classic which deserves to get picked.

Once again I looked for someone (Coventry this time) else from IMDB to put it the way I would:
"As I'm sure it is the case for many cinema fans, my respect and admiration towards this production widely excels the enjoyment I had while watching it. "Nosferatu" is a milestone from every possible viewpoint and it's one of those very few movies I think everybody should view at least once (although it actually requires repeated viewings…) It is the very first version of Bram Stoker's legendary vampire tale and easily the most copied film in the history of cinema. Shot by F.W. Murnau (who also made the equally essential titles "Faust" and "Der Januskopf") and made unforgettable by Max Schreck in his performance as the Count. Even though this film is over 80 years old, Schreck's image is still as nightmarish as it can be. The fact that this film is still very powerful therefore almost entirely depends on his unworldly character. "Nosferatu" is beautiful poetry, difficult to watch at times, but very rewarding. The sexual undertones as well as the shock-aspects have surely dated by now, but they're still present, and – as I mentioned before – they only increase my respect for Murnau and his crew. A definite must see, just make sure you're in the right mood. "

For our latest pick, we'll delve into the Studio system gold mine and pick out the seminal Douglas Sirk melodramas of the 50s... Scathing critique of America and the dominant form of capitalism that was (in Sirk's view anyway) eating away at the soul of the country, dressed up and disguised as "unintelligent" soap opera... Written on the Wind! We'll slot this one into Wildcard #3 for now, but that may change

Stellar performances from a truly remarkable cast: Rock Hudson, Lauren Bacall, Robert Stack, Dorothy Malone all go for home runs and all of them succeed. Dismissed upon its release as being too over-the-top and exaggerated, most critics (and viewers) didn't realize that was the whole point. By contrasting the plasticized beauty of the world inhabited by the super-rich, elite main characters with their ugly behaviour, Sirk proved to fire a shot across the bow to the consumptive elites of America - and the class system that enabled them - that didn't even register. It wasn't until years later that critics and film historians began to peel back the surface layers of this (and all other) Sirkian melodramas, revealing all the complex techniques of one of the masters of the "golden age".
Brilliant!

Team Pineapple Express is proud to select Lucky Number Slevin as one of its wildcard picks. No frills today because Team Pineapple Express babysat two insanely rambunctious little boys all weekend and needs to sleep.
Ok, I had a little nap, a little dinner. I will update the write up on this flick. It stars Josh Hartnett (who looks quite hot in this flick), Bruce Willis, Ben Kingsley, Morgan Freeman, and Lucy Liu. I wanted to see it in the theatre, I heard many glowing reviews, but missed out and saw it on DVD. For me, it completely lived up to expectations. A lot of great writing in this one, good acting, good cast, quite funny and quirky in parts.
It was really well done.

With our second 18th round selection, Direct2Video selects It's All Gone Pete Tong in the Wildcard category.
http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r10/masson223/its_all_gone_pete_tong_ver2.jpg
It's All Gone Pete Tong is a 2004 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004) Canadian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian) fictional (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiction) independent (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independent_film) mockumentary (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mockumentary) about Frankie Wilde (Paul Kaye (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Kaye)), a DJ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disc_jockey) who goes completely deaf (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deaf). The title is a reference to a rhyming slang (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhyming_slang) phrase used in Britain in the 2000s, referring to the BBC Radio 1 DJ Pete Tong (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Tong), standing for "it's all gone wrong". Like the similar mockumentary (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mockumentary) This Is Spinal Tap (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/This_Is_Spinal_Tap), the film takes measures to appear non-fictional, but Frankie Wilde himself is a fictional character.
The film was released on April 15, 2005 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_15,_2005). The DVD was released on September 20 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/September_20), 2005 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005). In 2005 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005), it won two awards at the US Comedy Arts Festival (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/US_Comedy_Arts_Festival) for Best Feature and Best Actor (Paul Kaye (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Kaye)) and swept the Gen Art Film Festival (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gen_Art_Film_Festival) awards (Grand Jury and Audience). It was filmed on location in Ibiza (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ibiza) and shot entirely in HD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-definition_television).
Several famous DJs appear in the film as "talking heads", giving the film a false sense of authenticity. Carl Cox (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Cox), Tiësto (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tijs_Verwest), Sarah Main (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Main), Barry Ashworth (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Barry_Ashworth&action=edit&redlink=1), Paul van Dyk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_van_Dyk), Lol Hammond (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Lol_Hammond&action=edit&redlink=1), Pacha (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacha) and Pete Tong (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Tong) appear in the film. Ibiza locations used in the movie include Pacha (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacha), Amnesia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amnesia_%28nightclub%29), Privilege (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Privilege_Ibiza) and DC10 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DC10_%28nightclub%29) as well as the historical Pike's Hotel (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Pike%27s_Hotel&action=edit&redlink=1).
At the beginning of the film, Frankie Wilde is a wildly successful DJ on the party island of Ibiza (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ibiza). He has a recording contract, performs at high-profile nightclubs, and lives in a luxurious villa with his trophy wife (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trophy_wife), Sonya, and their son. In talking head (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talking_head) sequences, contemporary DJs laud Frankie's turntable skills during this period. It is also evident that Frankie has cocaine and alcohol addictions (in hallucinations, his drug addiction is represented by a giant, menacing badger). His career is increasingly guided by egotistical, insensitive super-agent Max Haggar.

In the pre-1960 category, 6DTM is proud to select the 1927 Fritz Lang classic, Metropolis.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/06/Metropolisposter.jpg
I thought Itse's Nosferatu pick was a steal this late in the draft, and I think Metropolis is, too. One main reason for picking this film is the art direction and design. It took an abstract world and rendered it in a manner that had never been done before in film. The gorgeous, art-deco Metropolis came to life using a combination of miniatures and other new film techniques. Eugene Schuefftan developed the Schuefftan effect while working on this film: a process of using mirrors to create composite shots, which was in use pretty much up until the time that blue-screen technology was developed.
The story combines elements for Wells, Capek, and other early science-fiction writers, but even though it borrows from these contemporaries, it also helped to popularize both science-fiction and the sub-genre of disutopia. In this case, the disutopia is a city divided into a ruling elite who live in the art-deco skyscrapers, and the worker city beneath them. With mad scientists, cyborgs, angry mobs, and a visual style that lives on in Batman, Dark City, Blade Runner, Gattica, and numerous other science fiction films, it's enjoyable to watch simply to otherstand where all this other imagery came from.
It's admittedly it's a little muddled at times, although it's been speculated that this is because the film was heavily edited for American release and as much as 25 minutes of original footage was lost. (This footage was recently discovered in Argentina, and I'm looking forward to it's rerelease next year).

Agree for sure (M was an awesome pick too), although I must admit I haven't seen Metropolis. One of those "I know I have to see it, just haven't made time" kinda movies. Sure is critically acclaimed, and by all accounts, is still timeless/relevant/visually inventive after all these years. Metropolis is a classic and deserves to be picked for all the technical innovation alone, but I have to admit I didn't like it very much. A tedious film in many ways. It's longish (almost two hours is the "most current" restored version I believe, which is still not even close to the original length of something like three hours), silly and not very well acted. Some gorgeous scenery though. Well worth seeing for the historical value, but I recommend not setting your expectations for entertainment very high.

Ill admit to never having seen the original 1927 Metropolis, and the fact that it was basically taken with the choice right before mine makes this hilarious...
while not as ground breaking as its inspiration, still a fantastic anime film; with our next wildcard selection DVD-eh selects:
Metoroporisu (aka. Metropolis)
the anime movie released in 2001, based on the Metropolis manga series (which was inspired by a movie poster for the original)
Metropolis is a story of how important emotions are and how they separate humans from everything else. The movie follows a young boy and his uncle (a private investigator). The story is set in the far future where humans and robots live together, unfortunately not in harmony. Many robots are forced underground and are terminated for entering unauthorized areas. They are more or less servants to humankind. The plot starts to unfold when the boy meets a robot named Tima and they get in all kinds of trouble. Never a dull moment when you've got a robot by your side

First, some housekeeping- I would like to move Mary Poppins to fantasy, and move School of Rock Back to Musical...
Secondly, for round 18 pick, I would like to take (in the newly opened Wildcard #1 category): Goldeneye.
This was the first Bond movie with Brosnan, and despite being super cheesy in certain ways, was one of the better Bond films. With Quantum of Solace coming to theatres, I think this is a good pick right about now. I chose it over other excellent Bond films because this is one of the first I saw, and in some ways might have saved the franchise from death. Of course, then they ruined it with Lucy Lui and Halle Berry (yes she's hot but what they did in that movie with the Bond theme was trash). Goldeneye was the best Brosnan Bond film, and one of the best Bond films. Plus it spawned Goldeneye for N64, which revolutionized my videogame experience!

This next selection will fulfill a few components that I feel are lacking on my team's roster as it stands. For starters, I wanted to have a new movie on my team - something released in the last year - to round it out. A Rookie, if you will; a movie that has yet to become entrenched in our movie culture consciousness, but one that will, given time, hopefully be remembered as being a great one. I also wanted to have a movie that features in whole or part the talents of the collective that comprise the Apatow Productions Clan - it of itself being a rather new entity. And, I have always liked Kevin Smith, and wanted to find a way to work him onto the list. So, without further ado:
In the Wildcard #2 slot, Sequel: Part 2 is pleased to select Zack And Miri Make A Porno (2008).
http://www.geekforcefive.com/images/uploads/zack-and-miri-make-a-porno_seth-rogen_elizabeth-banks.jpg
In the CP thread dedicated to this movie I mentioned - before seeing it - that I was concerned that it would take the careers of two guys whose work I highly respect (Smith and Rogen) - for their ability to make me laugh and for their scriptwriting skillz - and run them completely into the ground; instead, I found the experience was quite the opposite. I feared Rogen was treading water by overplaying his shtick, and I hadn't seen anything good come out of the Smith camp for a few years (I thought Clerks II was awful), but this movie brilliantly combines the best things the two have to offer, and the result is a highly-endearing, hilarious, raunchy-but-touching triumph. I fell in love with this movie right away.
From Rogen, we get the strength of performance he brought to his first leading role in Knocked Up, where he first capably made something meaningful of a role about a deadbeat stoner who proves he isn't totally valueless; this role was a vanguard for a different ilk of Hollywood stars who really shone in 2007 (Shia Laboeuf being another example) - dudes who don't bring any Brad Pitt cachet to the table but are looked at as Leading Men nonetheless. Some people wrote off Knocked Up as absurd - what sensible white collar working would ever have relations with an eff-up like Seth Rogen?? - but I loved it; for a change, a guy we can all relate to on some level or other has the main role and gets the Hollywood Ending. In Zack and Miri, Rogen ups the ante in a more romantic leading role; once again, he's an eff-up who despite his shortcomings still has a chance with a hot girl, but there are fewer distractions - for example, it makes me laugh but I do get tired of Seth Rogen's pro-pot crusading, which I thought really ruined the fun in Pineapple Express - and the movie focuses more on the going-straight storyline (which, of course, is cleverly subverted).
This is where Kevin Smith comes in - Smith, who made his name with great dialogue and quirky, profane working-class (and geeky) characters. He has made the foray into softer territory before, with disappointing results, but I think the great achievement - and self-discovery - he has here is to see that you can bring the profanity into the mix and still make an effective chick flick. (I have decided to term this movie the first 'dick flick' - look at the sappy theme about making friends in the world that Smith outright slaps you in the face with at the end, and the way he populates his supporting cast with vulgar characters like Craig Delaney and a real-life pornstar in Traci Lords; this is subversion at its finest.) Smith as at the absolute top of his writing game with this script - it's early, and time will always tell, but I think it may be his best. No small feat.
I must also give great credit to the adorable Elizabeth Banks, who is pitch-perfect in the other lead role as a fitting foil to Rogen, and the rest of the supporting cast - Justin Long fanastic in a cameo, Jason Mewes great in (finally!) a role where his character's name isn't Jay, Jeff Anderson also funny - who are all excellent.
Despite effectively tugging at my heart strings at times, this movie succeeds most for just being really, really funny. Some of the exchanges between Robinson and Rogen had me nearly rolling in the aisle.
It's getting to the time of year when all the Big Oscar Juggernauts start rolling out, but, as usual, I find myself leaning towards another mainstream popcorn flick as one of the best of the year. It may seem like an obvious choice for the Draft in many ways, but I am extremely happy to have the chance to add this movie to my team.

Very late pick. Sorry. First off, I will move Cube to a wildcard slot, and select, in sci-fi.....TRON
Can't believe this is still around. Sweet. Figured with this crowd it'd be long gone. Anyways, loved this movie as a kid. Awesome 1982 effects, Sark freaked me out as a kid, as did the Master Control Program. Not much more to add. Classic Sci-Fi

IJAFW are not exactly happy to select this next movie but it's necessary. A movie draft without this particular movie is not much of a draft at all.
We'll take another wildcard spot here and select the Ed Wood 'masterpiece', a movie unfairly dubbed the worst movie of all time by many.......
PLAN NINE FROM OUTER SPACE

WIKI:
Plan 9 from Outer Space is a 1959 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1959_in_film) science fiction (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_fiction)/horror film (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horror_film) written, produced, and directed by Edward D. Wood, Jr. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_D._Wood,_Jr.). The film stars Gregory Walcott (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregory_Walcott), Mona McKinnon, Tor Johnson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tor_Johnson) and Maila "Vampira" Nurmi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maila_Nurmi). The film also claims to posthumously star Bela Lugosi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bela_Lugosi) through use of archive footage and a brief scene of the actor shot by Wood just before Lugosi's death in 1956, although Lugosi's character is primarily portrayed by chiropractor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiropractor) Tom Mason (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Mason).
The plot of the film is focused on a race of extraterrestrial (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extraterrestrial_life) beings who are seeking to stop humans (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human) from creating a doomsday weapon that would destroy the universe. In the course of doing so, the aliens implement "Plan 9", a scheme to resurrect Earth's dead as zombies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zombies) to get the planet's attention, causing chaos.
Because of its script, acting, special effects (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_effect), and multiple production errors visible in the final version of the film, Plan 9 from Outer Space is often regarded as a leading candidate for the title of "worst movie ever made (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Films_considered_the_worst_ever)". It has also earned Wood a posthumous Golden Turkey Award (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Turkey_Award) as the worst director ever.

Anybody that has yet to see this classic really has to do so at their earliest opportunity. It's fantastically bad and hysterically funny in it's own way!

If it helps jog your memory, we had a discussion after HD picked "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang", about his choice inspiring me for my next Wildcard pick.
