Roger Ebert:
"Here is a version of the "Pygmalion" legend for our own violent times - the story of a young woman who is transformed from a killer in the streets to a government assassin.
"La Femme Nikita (http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/classifieds?category=REVIEWS01&TITLESearch=La%20Femme%20Nikita&ToDate=20081231)" is a smart, hard-edged, psycho-romantic thriller by the young French director Luc Besson (http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/classifieds?category=search1&SearchType=1&q=Luc%20Besson&Class=%25&FromDate=19150101&ToDate=20081231) ("Subway"), who follows a condemned woman as she exchanges one doom for another.
The woman is played by Anne Parillaud (http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/classifieds?category=search1&SearchType=1&q=Anne%20Parillaud&Class=%25&FromDate=19150101&ToDate=20081231), who projects a feral hostility in the opening scenes, as she joins a crowd of drug-addled friends in holding up a drugstore. Cornered by the police, she takes advantage of a cop's momentary lapse of attention to grab his gun and shoot him point-blank in the face."

-------
The MacGuffins are excited to select, with their 8th team selection and 192nd overall pick, for entry in the Comedy category:
Annie Hall
A relationship is like a shark; it has to keep constantly moving forward or it dies.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y28/djroach/anniehall.jpg
Annie Hallis known by many people as the movie that beat out Star Wars for the Best Picture Oscar in 1977. While I won't debate which film should have won, I will say that both are outstanding films, and Annie Hall is deserving of its lofty place in cinema history.
I think Annie Hall could be the most ambitious romantic comedy of all time, at least from a filmmaking perspective. What I mean by that is that director Woody Allen employed A TON of tricky, quirky moviemaking techniques in this one, most of which you expect from independent projects or foreign oddities, and not a film of this genre. Here's a brief rundown:
An animated sequence
Allen's character talking directly to the camera
Characters leaving their bodies and viewing themselves as "spirits"
Characters interacting with "extras" in scenes who answer questions posed rhetorically by one of the actors
Actors in different frames (split-screen) talking to one another
Scenes in which the dialogue spoken by the characters does not match the "speech-bubble" subtitles
The non-linear structure of the storytelling
Scenes in which characters from the present revisit the past
Many waaaaay above average "long takes" of dialogue between characters
Scenes in black and whiteI'm sure I'm missing some others, but you get the idea. The style of this movie blew me away the first time I saw it- rarely does a director employ even one of these techniques as well as Allen does here, let alone meshing them all together in one film without seeming pretentious or unnecessary.
But what draws me back to this film over time is the razor-sharp dialogue, and the sad, sweet relationship between Alvy and Annie that we as viewers know right from the opening scenes is a failed one, but one that is worth revisiting. The neurotic nature of their interactions, the growth of Annie's character over the course of the relationship and how Alvy responds to that change, the tender, intimate scenes between the two lovers, the fragility of the bond between Alvy and Annie and the way in which it begins to decompose, the endless string of jokes by Alvy to inject humour in the relationship but also distance himself from the intimacy- it's all so well-done and easy to identify with.
The chemistry between Keaton's Annie and Allen's Alvy is also worth pointing out. It's superb. Keaton became a huge star upon Annie Hall's release, and she is truly fantastic in her role. Charming, innocent, and aloof at first, her personal growth becomes evident over the course of the film. And Allen doesn't get enough credit for his acting in this one either- it's easily his most universal role, and he creates some very poignant moments in front of the camera, possibly because you can believe him in the role moreso than in some of this other films. Behind the lens he is no slouch either, when not wowing the audience with his innovative style, his camera finds solace in the delicate connection between Alvy and Annie in everyday situations (movie dates, late-night talks, bookstores), and is not afraid to seek out the problems a couple can experience even when they are madly in love.
I urge you to see this movie if you haven't. It's a great way to get into Allen's films, and makes for a perfect date movie for even average moviebuffs and/or intellectuals. It's at once brilliantly smart, hilariously funny, and heartbreakingly emotional, and it holds a special place in my list of favorite films. And now, a special place on The MacGuffins!
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y28/djroach/anniehall-1.jpg
The MacGuffins proudly select, with their 14th team selection and 357th overall pick, for entry in the War category:
Downfall (Der Untergang)
The war is lost. But if you think that I'll leave Berlin for that, you are sadly mistaken. I'd prefer to put a bullet in my head.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y28/djroach/downfall_large.jpg
I'm thrilled to able to take this one so late in the draft. I had it pencilled in as one of the top 3 or 4 choices in the War category, and after the others went kinda early, I took a chance that this foreign language selection would slide down a little, perhaps because it's in German or that it's just been overlooked or not seen by many people.
It's a shame, if that's the case, because it's easily one of the best WWII films ever made, and contains what has to be the most accurate (and simply astonishing) portrayal of Hitler ever recorded on film. The film uses the also excellent book Inside Hitler's Bunker as its primary source material, and as such takes place almost entirely underground in the Nazi bunkers in Berlin during the last few days of The Fuhrer's life.
Part of the reason this film has been been so critically acclaimed (and also criticized) since its release is that it depicts the Nazis not as monsters like so many films in the past, but as complex human beings with three dimensional qualities and emotions. Bruno Ganz's Hitler is portrayed as a ruthless and frothing dictator, yes, but also a tortured, quiet black soul, whose irrational idiosyncracies and soft demeanor while espousing the tenets of the Nazi Party are given equal screen time. It is one of many virtuoso performances in the film.
There is a special "never seen before" quality about Downfall that makes it an especially important piece of work. Many scenes are unforgettable, particularily a chilling one in which Magda Goebbels carries out an unthinkable act in the name of The Fuhrer and his party. This is historical fiction at its best- highly accurate and detailed, psychologically complex, and a fully mesmerizing cinematic experience.

Okay, before I make my next pick, I need to make some moves...
First, since it's one of the funniest movies ever made, I'm moving This is Spinal Tap from Musical to Comedy.
Also, because it has a great soundtrack, won Oscars for both Original Score and Original Song (with two other nominations in the same category), as well as the Golden Globe for Best Comedy or Musical, I'm moving Beauty and the Beast from Animation to Musical.
Now, the door is open for my next pick...
"Magic Mirror, on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?"
In the 14th Round, Hot Buttery Topping is proud to select the film that created the genre of feature-length animated films...In the Animation category, Walt Disney's original Masterpiece, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/0b/Snowwhiteposter.jpg
After many years of producing successful and popular animated shorts (which often were bigger draws than the feature films they played before), Walt Disney decided that he needed to stop creating the opening act and make his own main attraction. One of the earliest movies Walt had ever seen was a silent version of Snow White when he was a young boy living in Kansas City and it was a story he felt could be successfully made into the first full-length animated feature.
Initially, Walt was told that he was crazy by pretty much everyone, including his brother and business partner Roy and his wife. People told him that no one would pay to watch an hour-long cartoon, but he stood by his belief that it would be a success, and was proven correct when Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the highest-grossing film of 1938 (and of all-time until Gone With The Wind was released in 1939). After numerous and frequent re-releases, Snow White is still one of the top ten highest grossing films, when adjusted for inflation.
Snow White and Seven Dwarfs set the standard for what a Disney animated film would be...a musical, a comedy, a strong central character (often a young girl/woman) with parental issues, and quirky sidekicks. Disney also pioneered many animation techniques during the production that quickly became industry standards (such as the use of live models for character design and the multiplane camera for creating a sense of depth in the 2 dimensional drawings).
Prior to Disney, no one had ever given the dwarfs names or personalities of their own. This embellishment of classic fairy tales also became a Disney standard.
Songs from the film have become classics that transcend the animated world. In fact, just recently, Ford has started using "Heigh Ho" in its latest truck commercial.
In 1939, Disney was presented with a special honorary Oscar, featuring one regular-sized statuette and seven smaller "Oscars"...

For the next choice for the B-List Celebs we are proud to select in the category of Drama, Lost in Translation.
http://www.filmcatcher.com/uploads/img/product/Lost_in_Translation_.jpg
This review from IMDB sums this movie up very well. It is not your usual over done dramatic movie, it was done very well. The chemistry between an old Bill Murray and young Scarlett Johansson was so great.
He's doing a commercial, parlaying his fifteen minutes of movie stardom. She's just graduated from college, recently married, and tagged along with her husband, a photographer on assignment. He's married with children, but he's never home. She's supporting her husband, but has no idea what she wants to do with her own life. Both are searching for the meaning of their lives, looking at the situation from different points of view. A person's lifetime is filled with self examination. Why am I here? What am I doing? Is this as good as it gets? The plot of this movie is the plot of life. You have a beginning. You're in the middle, and your story hasn't ended yet (in some cases, it won't end even after your death). Bob and Charlotte find each other fulfilling certain needs. Charlotte needs Bob's attention and humor, and Bob needs someone he can talk to (Bob "talks" with his wife, but they are not really talking). Bob helps Charlotte by answering her questions regarding life and direction, while Charlotte helps Bob by reminding him how much he loves his children and his wife. The love between the two characters is not one of lust but rather one of emotional and psychological need. Plotless, pointless, and boring? Only if you want all your stories packaged nicely with pretty paper and pretty ribbons. To me, the movie is like the shabu shabu sushi restaurant. What you get out of it depends on how much you put into it. The meaning of our lives, the purpose, the dreams (both dashed and realized), and the expectations forced upon us by others. "Translation" means to explain in simple terms. How do you "translate" what life is? What is it supposed to be about? Different answers for different people at different times in their lives. "Lost In Translation" indeed and it has nothing to do with pronouncing hard R's.
Cannot post videos yet as I am at work.

How he didn't walk away with the Oscar, I'll never know. He may have been playing himself in that movie, but Sofia Coppola wrote that screenplay specifically for him. If Bill Murray wasn't in the movie, there was no movie.
as per imdb.com:
- Sofia Coppola (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001068/) wrote the lead role specifically for Bill Murray (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000195/), and later said that if Murray turned it down, she wouldn't have done the movie.
- In 1999, Bill Murray (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000195/) replaced his talent agency with an automated voice mailbox that can be reached with an 800 number he gives out sparingly. Sofia Coppola (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001068/) reportedly left hundreds of messages on Murray's mailbox before he finally called back to discuss her offer to cast him as the star.
- Sofia Coppola (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001068/) wasn't sure if Bill Murray (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000195/) was actually going to show up for the film, going by only, according to Coppola, a verbal confirmation. It was on the first day of filming, that Murray showed up.
Absolutely amazing setting, story, and characters. Sure, a little on the slow side, and really didn't resolve anything in the end, but a great escape from my little world, into something that could be slightly relatable.
EDIT: Sean Penn won in 2004 for Mystic River, a movie I have not seen. Also nominated, Jude Law for Cold Mountain, Ben Kingsley for House Of Sand and Fog, and Johnny Depp for Pirates: Curse of the Black Pearl.
Can you tell I love this movie?

Let me join the chorus of affection for LiT. It's one of my favorite movies too. If I hadn't been following the strategy that I am, I would have chosen this a long, long time ago.
It's funny how so many people just don't care for this movie though. To address this, I find the quote from Roger Ebert's review to be a better response than anything I could think of---

A bit later than planned, but That's What She Said would like to select with our 2nd Wildcard slot the John Cusack comedy, Grosse Pointe Blank.
What can I say about this movie? It speaks to people on so many levels:
- superficially, it's just a great comedy with good writing, an excellent cast and a fab soundtrack
- then there's the deeper level that speaks of not being able to go home again/turn back time to the innocence of our youth that is worn away as we get older
- plus there's the added question of good vs evil and whether what you do defines who you are or is it just something you do with no implication to character
I can't really say alot more about GPB aside from it's one of my fave Cusack movies (and actually involves most of the acting Cusack clan) and has been since it was released back in 1997.
Cusack plays Martin Blank - a professional hitman - who has a job to do in Detroit at the same time as his 10yr high school reunion is taking place. He goes home but realizes things have changed and so has he.

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p15/alice45_photo/all-quiet4-copy.jpg
The film follows a group of German schoolboys, talked into enlisting at the beginning of World War 1 by their teacher. The story is told entirely through the experiences of the young German recruits and highlights the tragedy of war through the eyes of individuals. As the boys witness death and mutilation all around them, any preconceptions about "the enemy" and the "rights and wrongs" of the conflict disappear, leaving them angry and bewildered. This is highlighted in the scene where Paul mortally wounds a French soldier and then weeps bitterly as he fights to save his life while trapped in a shell crater with the body. The film is not about heroism but about drudgery and futility and the gulf between the concept of war and the actuality.

Team NC-17 thought long and hard about the options available this late in the draft, and what would be available in the catagories left to choose from.
And flipping through the TV over the last week... there it was, the one movie that needed to be picked...
So, without further delay...
In the FANTASY catagory, Team NC-17 has wet their pants in elation, to be able to select...
http://a1259.g.akamai.net/f/1259/5586/5d/images.art.com/images/-/Christopher-Reeve---Superman--C10101860.jpeg
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078346/
- Steven Spielberg (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000229/) was offered the chance to direct this film, but the producers balked at the salary he asked for. They decided to wait until they saw how "this fish movie" (Jaws (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073195/) (1975)) that he had just completed did at the box office. The movie was a huge success, and Spielberg went on to other projects.
- As a nod to the original comics, Clark Kent is seen briefly considering a phone booth as a place to convert into his alter-ego for the first time, before deciding on another solution.
- Christopher Reeve (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001659/) worked out so much during the making of the film that the traveling matte shots taken of him at the beginning of the shoot did not match the later shots, and had to be re-taken.
- Clark Kent's and Superman's hair part on opposite sides.
- The end titles sequence is more than seven minutes long, a record at the time of the film's release in 1978.
- The first baby Kal-El in the flight sequence of the escape capsule was played by Elizabeth Sweetman. The filming took place at Pinewood in October 1978 when Elizabeth was 6 months old. She earned £40 per day for four days work, netting a grand total of £120 after agency fee deductions.
- Marlon Brando (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000008/) refused to memorize most of his lines in advance. In the scene where he puts infant Kal-El into the escape pod, he was actually reading his lines from the diaper of the baby.
- Robert Redford (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000602/), Clint Eastwood (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000142/) and James Caan (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001001/) were all offered the movie's title role. All three turned it down: Redford wanted too much money; Eastwood said he was too busy; Caan said, "There's no way I'm getting into that silly suit."
- To obtain the musculature to convincingly play Superman, Christopher Reeve (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001659/) underwent a bodybuilding regime supervised by David Prowse (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001190/), the man who played Darth Vader in the original "Star Wars" trilogy.
- The credits sequence cost more than most films made up to that point.

From liamenator,
In the category of Docu/Non-Fiction, we are proud to select one of the quirkiest, funniest, more bizarre biopics around... Featuring Martin Landau's unforgettable and oscar-winning turn as Bela Lugosi; and one of, if not the best Johnny Depp performance to date (sorry, the Keith Richards impersonation doesn't cut it for me)... Tim Burton's homage to the B-movie master... Ed Wood (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109707/)!
http://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/pic/MG/191959%7EEd-Wood-Posters.jpg
For me, Ed Wood marks the high point of both Depp and Burton's careers. It is the last really good film Burton made (here's hoping he can still change that) and as I said already, my favorite Depp performance. The film continues to hold up, as well, and gets funnier with age.

I think we're getting to the point in the draft where there are pretty much no picks out there that everyone will like. Most of the movies left will fit into one of three categories: great films that few people have seen (such as Downfall), solid and generally liked films that some people are very 'meh' about (Grosse Point Blank or Superman), or love-em-or-hate-em films (Lost in Translation).

Before making our next selection, Direct2Video would like to move The Manchurian Candidate (2004) from the War category to the Sci-fi category.
And now, with the 369th pick, Direct2Video selects Patton in the War category.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y250/PhotozOnline/PattonMoviePosterLarge.jpg
Some words from film critic James Berardinelli:
The film opens in 1943 North Africa, with a brutal look at American casualties at the battle of Kasserine. General George S. Patton (George C. Scott) arrives from Morocco to take command the U.S. army in Tunisia in preparation for fighting Rommel (Karl Michael Vogler) at el Gitar. From North Africa, Patton's forces move to Sicily, where they sweep north across the island, taking Palermo, then racing Montgomery (Michael Bates) to Messina. Along the way, Patton's verbal and physical abuse of a soldier suffering from "battle fatigue" - which the general brands as cowardice - becomes ammunition for his critics. He later offers a public apology, but this incident keeps him from the action for a while, and he must stand by as a decoy during the Normandy invasion. Later in the year, however, General Omar Bradley (Karl Malden) gives Patton command of the Allied Third Army, with which he pushes across Western Europe to stop the Germans at the Battle of the Bulge, the last major Nazi offensive of the war.
In early 1971, the Academy Awards saluted Patton. Capturing eight Oscars - including best picture, best director, best actor, best screenplay, best editing, and best production design - the movie won every major battle of the evening. Such acclaim was richly deserved, for Patton remains to this day one of Hollywood's most compelling biographical war pictures. With its larger-than-life, yet at the same time singularly human, portrayal of Gen. George S. Patton, Jr., Franklin Schaffner's picture is an example of filmmaking at its finest. From production design and battle choreography to simple one-on-one dramatic acting, Patton has it all. There is no scene in all one-hundred seventy minutes that doesn't work on some level.

for wildcard, I'll take one of my favourite westerns, Lawrence Kasdan's Silverado
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0007MAO0M.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
Trivia:
Earl Hindman (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0385561/) plays Wilson on "Home Improvement" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101120/) (1991) where the lower half of his face is always obscured. In the scene where the house is on fire, he appears gagged, with the lower half of his face obscured.
Kevin Costner (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000126/) was offered the role of Jake by Lawrence Kasdan (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001410/), in part to make up for his role in The Big Chill (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085244/) (1983) being cut out of that film.
The set for Silverado was built for this movie and has since been used in such movies as Young Guns (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096487/) (1988), Wyatt Earp (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111756/) (1994), Last Man Standing (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116830/) (1996/I), "Lonesome Dove" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096639/) (1989), All the Pretty Horses (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0149624/) (2000) and Wild Wild West (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120891/) (1999). In Wild Wild West "Kasdan Ironworks" can be seen on the side of one of the buildings as a reference to Lawrence Kasdan (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001410/).
Shooting lasted 96 days, between November 1984 and March 1985.
In the scene where Augie tries to jump on Kevin Costner (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000126/)'s character Jake's horse and falls to the ground, the horse is wearing Jake's hat. This was Costner's idea just before the cameras rolled to keep with his character's goofy nature. Kasdan loved the idea and it stayed in the film.
This was Richard Jenkins (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0420955/)'s film debut.
Director and producer Lawrence Kasdan (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001410/) cast two of his children and his wife in small roles in the film. His brother and co-writer Mark Kasdan (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0440461/) also had a small role as a doctor that was filmed but ended up on the cutting room floor.Just an amazing cast in this one. Kline, Glenn, Costner, Glover, John Cleese, Jeff Goldblum, Brian Dennehy.

I think this one falls into the love-it-or-hate-it category. In the Award Winner category, Six Degrees of Troy McClure selects Sidways, based on its win Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy in 2004.*
Don't have a lot of time to go into it now, however, this film has career performances from three actors (Giamatti, Madsen, and Haden Church), all of whom won a host of critic awards. And Sandra Oh, as the fourth character, was decent as well. A great story, and excellent direction by Alexander Payne, who's always able to get the most nuanced performances of his actors. It's score of 94% on Metacritic is one of the top ten all-time scores on that site; I think there's an inherent bias in that a lot of critics out there have had novels or screenplays get rejected, like Giamatti's character, so he has extra relatibility to them.
I'll post links, artwork, etc. later.
*I assume this is allowable. It was never specified whether both of the Golden Globe's two Best Picture categories (drama and comedy/musical) were eligible.

Very nice pick, octo! I agree that it's a love-it-or-hate-it movie, as the person I went with hated it and found it boring. This was someone I think has great taste in films as well. On the other hand, I loved it and could definitely relate to its themes.
I see no reason why the GG Best Picture-Musical or Comedy wouldn't be eligible. If you accept the award for Drama, you have to accept the one for Musical/Comedy.

Sorry for the extended delay. Things came up. Anyways, my next pick may be argued, so I'll leave it up to the rest of you whether I can put it in the Documentary / Non-fiction category or have to make it a wildcard.
Team Lucky the Donkey will select Hoffa in the Documentary / non fiction category.
This movie follows the rise and inevitable fall of Teamster legend Jimmy Hoffa. Originally meant for Oliver Stone to direct, I'm glad it went to Devito instead. The way this is shot, with the changes from flashback to present time makes it seamless imo. Devito's character, which is an amalgam of several of Hoffa's acquiantances over the years, is great as his ever loyal sidekick. No one really knows how Hoffa died, but I like the way it is portrated here.
The scenes with Robert Kennedy and Hoffa are taken almost verbatim from the actual hearings, and I wish I could have been around to see it. This movie mostly all "based on real life" except for the ending. If "Ali" can be in this category, I think I should be alright with Hoffa in this position.
Didn't know until I researched it a bit, but this movie apparently was a bit polarizing. Nicholson got a nomination for both a Golden Globe and a Razzie at the same time. I get sucked in every time to this movie. Nicholson as Hoffa makes me completely suspend my disbelief for the entire movie. Hoffa has me convinced by the end of the movie that I have to join the Teamsters, and I don't even drive a truck. Great performances all around. Heavily underrated movie.

In the 14th round IJAFW are proud to select, as our Animation selection, the Walt Disney classic,
The Jungle Book (1967)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/1/1d/Thejunglebook_movieposter.jpg/200px-Thejunglebook_movieposter.jpg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Thejunglebook_movieposter.jpg)
A personal favourite of mine when I was growing up. This was the last movie that Walt was actually involved with. Great songs and memorable characters here.
Wiki:
The Jungle Book is a 1967 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1967_in_film) animated (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animation) feature (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feature) film (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film), released on October 18 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_18), 1967 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1967). The 19th animated feature in the Disney animated features canon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disney_animated_features_canon), it was the last to be produced by Walt Disney (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walt_Disney), who died during its production. It was inspired by the stories about the feral child (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feral_child) Mowgli (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mowgli) from the book of the same name (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Jungle_Book) by Rudyard Kipling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudyard_Kipling). The movie remains one of Disney's most popular, and contained a number of classic songs, including "The Bare Necessities (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bare_Necessities)" and "I Wan'na Be Like You (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Wan%27na_Be_Like_You_%28The_Monkey_Song%29)". Most of the songs are by Richard M. Sherman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_M._Sherman) and Robert B. Sherman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_B._Sherman). The film was directed by Wolfgang Reitherman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfgang_Reitherman) and his son, Bruce Reitherman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Reitherman), provided Mowgli's voice.

Crap! I knew my pick was coming up fast but I have to plead negligence on this one guys and gals - had some company over for the game last night and didn't get around to making it later, even though with some responsibility could easily have done it earlier. My bad, sorry! :bag:
Anyway, here we go.
Team Clint Eastwood is overwhelmingly happy to announce as their selection for the Action category, Point Break (1992).
I have a lot I can say about this film but in keeping with the haphazard theme of this weekend I'll have to get to it later - this and about 5 other movies I still haven't written up. For now I will just say that I make no secrets that Point Break is my favorite movie. This is a sentimental choice that I can objectively back up - I think it is a spot-on action masterpiece that in many ways I am bewildered hasn't been taken yet, although I did feel comfortable letting it fall, despite wanting to ensure I got it. If that makes any sense.
Again, apologies for not doing my part to keep this thing moving!

Yes.. That's right, 'The Ten Commandments'. Now, I guess I've chosen this because every Easter this movie is on TV, I find myself watching it in it's entirety. Not only did I see this movie over and over again as a youth, but I found this film quite compelling and captivating. Yul Brenner's performance as Pharaoh Ramesses is outstanding and Charlton Heston's as Moses is equally as great.

This film provides a tremendous amount of insight into what created and ended the vibrant Seattle music scene of the late 80's and early 90's. Anyone interested in rock history should watch this film and if you are a fan of some of the bands that came out of that scene, it's a must see. There is so much to be learned and you may never look at 'grunge' in the same way again. That's not a bad thing mind you.
What really makes this film stand out beyond the meat of the above is the enormous amount of live footage of bands that, for the most part, never made it big and...again for the most part....were well thought of on the scene at the time. Bands included in this group are The Gits, Melvins, 7 Year Bitch, Gas Huffer, U-Men, Tad, Bad Moon among others. Fascinating stuff, for me anyway!
Various clips of the movie in this video.

Classic rich brothers with polar personalities courting the family chauffer's daughter story! Wonderful story with the great Audrey Hepburn as the title character. Humphrey Bogart and William Holden star as brothers competing for her affection. One of the first romantic comedies? Spawned a successful remake starring Harrison Ford, Greg Kinnear and Julia Ormond several years ago.
This is just a fun movie to watch, as most anything with Audrey Hepburn is. It's a movie that despite it's time still resonates today I think.

Awesome choice Dis - the classic was way better than the remake but both were pretty great flicks...loved Audrey Hepburn in this and the whole society issue of upper vs lower class made more sense back then than in the 90's(?) when it was re-made.

I'm so sorry I took so long guys, it was my Grandpa's 80th birthday this weekend and I was out most of it. So in honour of my Grandpa's 80th birthday, in the Western category, Team MissTeeks selects Cat Ballou.
This is one of the few westerns I have seen but it's also a family favorite in our house. It stars a young Jane Fonda as a woman named Cat Ballou who becomes an outlaw when her father is killed because he won't sell his land to the railroad company. The best part of this movie is Lee Marvin as the drunkard Kid Shelleen. The best scene is when he pulls into town on his drunk horse. It also included the Ballad of Cat Ballou sung by Nat King Cole and Stubby Cay.

It's Just a Flesh Wound are proud to select with our 15th selection a movie I'm really surprised has lasted this long. Movie buffs here will recognize the classic FANTASY,
"Harvey" (1950)
http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV5BMTQ5NjA0ODE2OV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwOTgxNjUyMQ@@._ V1._SX100_SY139_.jpg
Difficult decision this one as there are more recent fantasy movies, much more recognisable to the average person, that I considered for this category but, ultimately, I went with the best player available.
Harvey stars one of my favourite actors, Jimmy Stewart, and is the story of a man whose best friend is a 6'3" rabbit called...Harvey, that only he can see!
The movie was ranked #35 on AFI's 100 years 100 Laughs and was #7 on their Top Fantasy movies. As this one was produced in 1950 I'm willing to bet that there are plenty of you who haven't seen it before. I would recommend you give it a try but stay with it, don't give up after the first 15 minutes or so. The movie grows on you and you will 'get it' by the end.

OK. So only 2 non-wildcard picks to go here for me. For their next selection Team Clint Eastwood is pleased to announce Frederico Fellini's Nights of Cabiria (Le Notti di Cabiria) (1957) in the Pre-1960's category.
http://www.varley.net/Pages/images/Favorite%20Movies/Nights%20of%20Cabiria.gif
Frederico Fellini is a director whose work I wish I could say I stumbled on accidentally, because his films (the ones I have seen, anyway) are so often a wondrous joy, Cabiria being the most successful in this regard.
This movie is a beautiful experience, and I would like to spend some time trying to do it justice with my write-up... so as has been the trend as of late I will have to put this off for the time being. For now, I will share an excerpt of someone else's take on the film, to give you an idea:
I am not much in favor of "best" lists--I wouldn't make it in Cusack's "High Fidelity" world--but I can usually offer a range of titles of films that I consider the most powerful experiences I have had in front of a screen--Bicycle Thief, Ran, Ordet, Seventh Seal, Citizen Kane, L'Avventura, Rear Window, Blade Runner, quite a few others. But if I had to pick just one title, it would be Nights of Cabiria. I saw it when it first came out in this country--I was a junior in high school and fortunate enough to live near a theater that showed foreign films. It ran for several weeks and I kept going back to see it over and over, giving myself permission by dragging friends to see it. No one was ever disappointed...

I find that with a lot of old films; it's like the art of creating a film ending evolved a lot later than creating a film. There are a lot of pre-1970 films that I would call great films, but only a handful of pre-1970 films that have great endings. (Unfortunately, the first few examples that spring to mind haven't been picked yet, so I don't want to mention them in this thread).

I basically love any movie that is set in Tudor England, and my favorite tv show is The Tudors and I'm currently reading Six Wives: The Queens of Henry VIII. This movie is about Sir Thomas More, who becomes Lord Chancellor in England when King Henry VIII breaks from Rome in order to marry Anne Boleyn. When Sir Thomas More refuses to sign the Act of Supremecy, which made King Henry VIII head of the Church of England, More is put on trial and executed. This movie won 6 Oscars, including for Best Picture and Best Actor for Paul Scofield.

Hey guys, after seeing it on the weekend, even though it didn't get amazing reviews, I am going to take Passchendaele and stick it in the drama category for now...
My rationale is that it was an excellent war movie, filmed and based in and around Calgary, has a friend of mine in the first 5 minutes of the film, and was one of the best Canadian movies in a while.

That is a pretty strong opinion! I'd be interested to hear your rationale. (Unless of course you mean that you thought the ending sucked)
Regarding movie endings, IMO they are the most personal part of the film - for you as a viewer. It is at this point where you get to decide what you are going to take away from the experience. To me, some of the best endings are the ones left ambiguous, allowing you that much more control over what you want to make of the film. I have seen several compelling readings of the ending to NOC, some of them quite disparate. Personally, I think having different reactions and being able to find different meaning is great - it truly indicates that you are putting part of who you are into the movie.

Sometimes Sophia Loren comes across as glamourous eye-candy, but here, wow, this is a stunning acting performance. She became the first person to receive an acting Academy Award for a non-English-speaking role, and she won similar awards at Cannes, Berlin, and Venice. The story follows the refugee travels of a mother and daughter, Cesira (Loren) and Rosetta, who flee Rome into rural Italy, become friends with the locals including a handsome intellectual communist sympathizer who's captured by the Germans. Eventually, Rome is liberated by the allied forces and Cesira and Rosetta return, but the journey home turns tragic. always liked prison movies, under drama, I'll take Escape From Alcatraz
http://www.moviemart.in/upload/Escape%20From%20Alcatraz%20(1979)2aa4d.jpg
Other than Shawshank, this is my favourite prison movie. Great cast, good story.
Escape from Alcatraz is a 1979 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1979) thriller (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thriller_(genre)) film (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film), directed by Don Siegel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Siegel) and starring Clint Eastwood (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clint_Eastwood). The film co-stars Fred Ward (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Ward), and also features Patrick McGoohan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_McGoohan) as the suspicious, vindictive warden.
The film is based on the non-fiction book Escape from Alcatraz (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escape_from_Alcatraz) by J. Campbell Bruce. It chronicles the story of Frank Morris (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Morris) (Eastwood) and brothers John (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Anglin) (Ward) and Clarence Anglin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clarence_Anglin) (Jack Thibeau (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jack_Thibeau&action=edit&redlink=1)), who have the distinction of being possibly the only people to ever escape from the Alcatraz (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcatraz) prison (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prison). It also features the film debut of Danny Glover (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Glover).
A cold, atmospheric thriller, the film captures many of the difficulties of prison life and the conditions of Alcatraz prison before it was closed down permanently, shortly after the escape.
There is some hint at the end of the film that the escape was successful, but in fact it remains a mystery as to whether the escapers succeeded or not.

Team Pineapple Express is happy to select Tora! Tora! Tora! (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066473/) in the War category.
This film tells of the events leading up to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. The title of this film comes from the code word used by the Japanese to tell they had achieved surprise on the Americans. It was nominated for five Oscars, and took home one in the category of Visual Effects, as the attack sequences are fantastic.
The actors cast in this film were chosen because they were not blockbuster names. The filmmakers wanted the attention to be on the story and events, not the actors themselves.
Although not initially a box office success, the film has gained an audience in the time since its release on DVD. It is praised for its action sequences and its historical accuracy at the time (some inaccuracies have since been 'discovered' through further investigation of records, etc)

Not a whole lot to say about this one, other than it will forever be a favourite since I watched it about 47000 times as a kid. I can honestly say it sparked an interest in English history (even though, technically, there is no history in it) that lives on to this day. I became hell-bent on reading and discovering as much as I could about the English monarchy and UK history in general. Not surprisingly, History wound up being one of my majors in undergrad... I honestly think a lot of that can be attributed to this little, mostly forgotten Disney film.

If it wasn't for Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day, Lost In Translation, What About Bob, and a plethora of other great Bill Murray movies, this would be his iconic piece.
- Originally a vehicle for Cheech Marin (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001507/) and Tommy Chong (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001045/).
- As a result of this movie, the song "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" has become a popular cadence in the US military.
- According to Ivan Reitman (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0718645/) in the DVD Commentary, the scene where Bill Murray (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000195/) is loading the rich woman's suitcases into the trunk and he hits himself in the crotch was accident. Murray really did hit himself in the crotch with the case, thus his very real line "Oh, my balls."

This raw, black & white film by Brooklyn born director, Darren Aronofsky is a story of a mathematical genius who tries to comprise a program that will dictate the behaviors of the stock market. The story is narrated by the main character Max, who soon realizes that there are forces at large who will stop at nothing to steal his code. Gritty, low-budget and informal, Pi is an excellent thriller that binds genius, skepticism and religious values into this late 90's masterpiece.

And also, because you took 62 hours to make that pick. Wasn't that enough time???
I agree with that for the precedent reason. I'm sure a lot of people would have movies that they would switch due to ones that hadn't occurred to them earlier, and people have gotten around that problem by moving a previously selected movie into their wildcard to open up a slot in one of the other categories.

I was thinking about this last night. What if rather than an extra wildcard (or in addition to), at the end, we do a round, in the same order, or drops and pickups.
Much like the waiver draft in the NHL. If you don't want anyone, you don't need to make a change, but it would be in the same order as the draft.
Ex-
1. pass
2. pass
3. drops Movie A and picks up Movie B
4. pass
etc...
Would the 'league' consider this idea? This way, it's still in the draft order we've determined, and no random pickups or drops are done.

Just to state my opinion, I'm with octothorp regarding having to rethink my strategy for the rest of the draft. I'm not crazy about changing rules in the middle of the game, but I'll live with whatever the majority decides. But ABSOLUTELY NO DROPS; you pick a movie, you live with it or trade it if you can find any takers. I'm glad you didn't go there.

That's What She Said is proud to select (and astonished it's still available at this round) in the Sci-Fi category, Independence Day.
Arguably, the movie that launched Will Smith into super-stardom and made him choice blockbuster material, this 1996 film featured the erstwhile Fresh Prince of Bel Air teaching some nasty aliens that it wasn't a good idea to interrupt his July 4 long weekend.
This movie is an enjoyable romp through out with varying storylines that include the hilarious Randy Quaid, the serious Bill Paxton & the quirky Jeff Goldblum to mention just a few.

Aren't most action movies at the heart of things guilty pleasures? I know that the ones I enjoy most tend to be (yes I will even own up to loving Judge Dredd....:bag:)
This wasn't my 1st choice for Sci-Fi but there were too many out there who beat me to the bunch on at least 8 or 9 others so ID seemed like a good pick as we near the end of the draft....at least it's not one that I feel weakens my roster. ;)

For the next pick, with the addition of two new wildcard spots we figure we should fill one in. So in our first Wildcard spot we are proud to select a guilty pleasure of ours, Pirates of the Caribbean - Curse of the Black Pearl.
This movie brought Johnny Depp back from obsecurity and shot him to the top as one of the most sought after actors of today. This movie is great as it has great acting by Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom and the beautiful Keira Knightley.
http://cdn.overstock.com/images/products/L934219.jpg
Pirates of the Caribbean is a sweeping action-adventure story set in an era when villainous pirates scavenged the Caribbean seas. This roller coaster tale teams a young man, Will Turner, with an unlikely ally in rogue pirate Jack Sparrow. Together, they must battle a band of the world's most treacherous pirates, led by the cursed Captain Barbossa, in order to save Elizabeth, the love of Will's life, as well as recover the lost treasure that Jack seeks. Against improbable odds, they race towards a climactic confrontation on the mysterious Isla de Muerta. Clashing their swords in fierce mortal combat, Will and Jack attempt to recapture The Black Pearl ship, save the British navy, and relinquish a fortune in forbidden treasure thereby lifting the curse of the Pirates of the Caribbean.

jemmytee (http://www.imdb.com/user/ur2466469/comments) from Los Angeles, Ca, in IMDB puts it very nicely:
"I want to start off by saying, if you're looking for slap-shtick comedy and low- rent toilet humor, this is NOT the movie for you. It has its moments of "belt-in- the-face" fun, but they are consistently grounded in the real problems the lead characters face -- unemployment, loss of family, lack of self-respect, fear of ridicule and a bleak future that promises even greater failure. This is not a Farrelly Brothers kind of story...and that is what makes it so special.
Gaz is broke, on welfare, lives in the projects, is behind on his child support and is threatened with losing his son to his ex-wife unless he can pull together 700 pounds (about $1100). But this is Sheffield, England -- once a boomtown but now a deadening city of shopping malls and garment mills, where the factories (and the guys that worked in them) are empty shells of themselves. The women have jobs; the men have job fairs. Into this comes a touring "Chippendale's" dance troupe (aimed at women only; after all, they have the spare money) and an idea is born. Gaz and some mates will strip all the way, give the ladies "the full monty", as a way to earn some quick change.
The idea is preposterous. Only one of the six men in the new dance troupe is good-looking enough to pull it off (pun intended); the rest are either fat, skinny, old and/or ugly. But the movie's gentle suggestion is that not only is beauty in the eye of the beholder, but so is self-respect...and in following through with their plans, they gain a LOT more than just 2000 pounds each.
Robert Carlyle is good as the anchor of the piece, always pushing and planning and cajoling and begging and even stealing, as need be, but it's the rest of the cast that makes this movie work -- from Tom Wilkinson as a manager ashamed to tell his wife he's lost his job to Mark Addy as a man who's so ashamed of how fat and unattractive he is, he's driving his wife away right down to Hugo Speer and his joyful "let's have a blast" attitude.
"The Full Monty" is a gem of human comedy aimed not at the gut but at the sense of hope we all carry. I recommend it for anyone who needs a lift. "

With the 408th Overall pick The All Or Nuttin team is proud to select in the "Wildcard #1" category, a movie directed by Martin Scorsese, starring Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, James Woods and Sharon Stone, a movie about friendship and betrayal, power, greed and money between mobsters in Las Vegas, nominated for an Oscar, Casino.
http://www.movieposter.com/posters/archive/main/17/A70-8865
Roger Ebert:
Martin Scorsese (http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/classifieds?category=search1&SearchType=1&q=Martin%20Scorsese&Class=%25&FromDate=19150101&ToDate=20081231)'s fascinating new film "Casino (http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/classifieds?category=REVIEWS01&TITLESearch=Casino&ToDate=20081231)" knows a lot about the Mafia's relationship with Las Vegas. It's based on a book by Nicholas Pileggi, who had full access to a man who once ran four casinos for the mob, and whose true story inspires the movie's plot. Like "The Godfather (http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/classifieds?category=REVIEWS01&TITLESearch=The%20Godfather&ToDate=20081231)," it makes us feel like eavesdroppers in a secret place.
Variety.com:
In fascinating detail and with dazzling finesse, "Casino" (javascript:zodInfuser.FillDescriptions('"Casino"' );) lays out how the mob controlled and ultimately lost Las Vegas. Martin Scorsese's intimate epic about money, sex and brute force is a grandly conceived study of what happens to goodfellas from the mean streets when they outstrip their wildest dreams and achieve the pinnacle of wealth and power. An extraordinary piece of filmmaking, the picture is rough and unflinching in ways that won't be to all tastes and, from a commercial point of view, it is certainly open to criticism for its great length and unsavory violence. Film will be a must-see for cinema-savvy audiences , but will make heavy demands on more casual viewers, meaning that a major push by Universal, aided by some strong reviews, will be needed to make this a solid performer outside of upscale urban situations.

The MacGuffins happily select, with the 411th pick in the 16th round, for entry in the Western category:
Brokeback Mountain
I wish I knew how to quit you.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y28/djroach/imgBrokebackMountain1.jpg
I kind of goofed my way into this pick. I must've watched 5 or 6 yet-unpicked westerns in the past couple months, trying to find something I really enjoyed and would feel good adding to my squad. One in particular really grabbed me, but it was only semi-eligible, and I didn't want to have to defend its eligibility. I absolutely loved another movie I won't name in case it gets picked, and was ready to select it here, until I was browsing my draft notes last night and noticed I had jotted down Brokeback Mountain under the Award Winners category as a possible selection. I thought- "I wonder if that is listed under Western on IMDB," and sure enough, it is! I would've taken it much earlier had I noticed that before (it didn't show up on any of the "best of" westerns lists I researched, and I just never put 2 and 2 together), so I'm thrilled to add it to the MacGuffins in the 16th round.
I don't know if this movie will ever get the credit it truly deserves amongst average moviegoers because of the context, which is really sad. People will always regard it as a landmark film (the two lead actors in gay roles that are romantically intertwined, in the setting of a traditional western), but the emotional impact of the movie is tremendous, and I believe it's one of the best stories of forbidden love and personal heartache ever made into a movie.
Ang Lee's direction is careful and meticulous- you can really feel the emotional turmoil Ennis and Jack (and their families) suffer through because they've found true love but cannot make it work. And while most will argue that Heath Ledger's performance in The Dark Knight is his best, I will defend his work here as equally as good, but on a completely different level. While his Joker is facial tics and nervy charisma, his Ennis is the entire spectrum of human emotion conveyed ever so subtly beneath a weathered, old-school exterior. Almost as if his pain is so deep, he has succumbed to it and has nothing left to say. A brilliant bit of subdued acting, and as good as the best work of luminaries like Sean Penn, Jack Nicholson, and Robert DeNiro.
I am reading a few reviews from Metacritic about the movie as I write this, and I don't know if I've ever read a better one-sentence summation than this one from Ella Taylor of LA Weekly:
Brokeback Mountain is at once the gayest and the least gay Hollywood film I've seen, which is another way of saying that Lee has a knack for culling universality from the most specific identities. That's exactly how I felt after seeing this. Homosexual or not, love and heartbreak are universal human emotions, and this film portrays the relationship between Ennis and Jack in such an open and honest fashion that I really don't know how somebody could see this film and not feel their pain. I'm not at all ashamed to say I think Brokeback Mountain is a modern classic, and am happy to add it to my roster!

As an open minded person, the homosexuality in the movie didn't bother me at all really. But I did find the movie very boring personally. Great acting and cinematography, but the story just didn't do it for me. And I dont like being called a homophobic when I express this opinion but it often happens.

^^Another movie I can't seem to sit down and watch. I bought it on DVD when it came out and just am never in the mood to watch it. I hear it's good, so one of these days, I'll just have to force myself to watch.

To round out my non-Wildcard selections, in the Drama category, Hot Buttery Topping is very proud to select, from 1976, a scathing satire of the television industry that might actually be more appropriate now than it was 30 years ago, Network.

I'll go out and say good pick Ro. It wasn't a fag movie per se. The movie shows the effects of profound regret, something most people can relate to.

Great pick Ro.
I went into my viewing of the movie expecting the homosexuality to define the film and came away moved by the story of which homosexuality was a small, yet admitedly significant, part. It's a truly beautiful film, in every way. Great cinematography, wonderful score and a beautiful story.
Frankly, I think you undersell Ledger's performance. I haven't seen Dark Knight yet, so I can't compare the two but I think his performance as Ennis in this film is one of the two or three best performances I've seen in the last ten years or so. It actually got me excited about what we might see (now it's might have seen) from him in the future.
Another one of my wildcards gone!
The movie also has the added bonus of starring Michelle Williams who shares the same hometown as me, Kalispell, MT.

Excellent pick Ro - the understated yet poignant performance by Ledger is what turned that movie into a great one instead of just a good one with pretty cinematography. He played Ennis so deftly that while he seldom gave away how deeply he loved Jack, you felt it and understood in some ways that his love was the deeper of the two. The end of the movie is still able to move me as you watch him come to terms with things and the role he's been dealt in life. IMHO this was a much better performance than the Dark Knight as he had no gimmicks to use or makeup to hide behind (altho his Joker was amazing as well).

I was wondering the same, but based on the edited thread title, it appears the Commish has ruled it's an AK.
For what's it worth, he hasn't posted anything on CP in over a week.
Yup. Once you're AK'd you're AK'd.
For example lets say you were at the head or tail of the draft, like Windom is.
We're not waiting 30 hours for 2 picks. :)

That being said, I didn't think it was a bad movie, and at this stage in the draft is a pretty solid pickup.

It's a good movie that has been unfairly slated because it won the Best Picture Oscar when EVERYBODY expected Ryan to win. I really enjoyed the movie. It was intelligent and very funny at times. Dame Judi Dench has a fantastic turn as Queen Elizabeth. Good pickup sadora.

With the next pick the B-List Celebs are happy to select as Wildcard #2 Beverly Hills Cop.
This is by far my favorite Eddie Murphy movie, and his character of Axel Foley is just amazing. This movie
http://www.publispain.com/posters/beverly_hills_cop.jpg
Detroit cop Axel Foley is delighted when he receives a surprise visit from his best friend Mikey Tandino, who lives in California. Not long after Mikey arrives in Detroit, Mikey is killed, right in front of Axel, by a man named Zack. Axel follows Zack to Beverly Hills, California, where Beverly Hills police department Lieutenant Andrew Bogomil assigns Detective Billy Rosewood and Rosewood's partner, Sergeant John Taggart, to keep an eye on Axel. Axel visits his friend Jenny Summers, who works in an art gallery. With Jenny's help, Axel discovers that Zack works for Jenny's boss, Victor Maitland, the man who owns the art gallery. Maitland is a drug kingpin who is using the gallery as a front, and Maitland had Zack kill Mikey after Maitland accused Mikey of stealing some of Maitland's bonds. With the help of Jenny, Billy, and Taggart, Axel does what he can to make sure Maitland and Zack won't kill any more people.

Sylvester Stallone was originally intended to play Axel Foley. After his departure due to differences in scope (he wanted more action than the producers would budget for) the role was re-written for Murphy. Stallone went on to use his version of the film as the basis for his movie Cobra. According to Eddie Murphy on Inside the Actor's Studio, Stallone also envisioned a "harder edged" screenplay. The character of Jenny Summers was originally a Stallone love interest, but was rendered only an "old friend" to Murphy's Foley. Mikey was originally supposed to be Stallone's brother.

Great pick Superflyer. Eddie Murphy was 23 years old when this film was released. How many 23 year old comedians can deliver this?
He's done some great stuff since (and before) but I think this will probably go down as his most popular film.

Nice pick. I was hoping it would last one more round because it was my first wild card.

That's What She Said is proud to call to the podium our 16th selection from the Drama category, Finding Neverland.
This is a movie with a rather simple storyline, based loosely on the real-life story of J.M. Barrie & his inspiration for writing Peter Pan as the result of his relationship with Sylvia Llewelyn-Davies and her sons. As written by Sid Unrau in his review of the film on IMDB.com, "Some movies entertain; some teach; some open up new worlds. This movie opened up new worlds. With each passing scene, carefully woven from the previous ones, it was like crossing yet another threshold into another world....each layer adding not to complexity (the story is rather simple), but to the depth. Depp and the others (esp. the young actor who played Peter) easily lead the audience....into the paths of authenticity, healing, love, friendship and the triumph of inner strength."
The story is emotional without being maudlin & sweet without being saccharine - the young boys, esp Freddy Highmore are fabulous in their roles and Kate Winslet is simply luminous as Sylvia. She is almost treated as a Madonna-type character by Barrie because while there is no doubt of his love for her, there is little if any sexual overtone in the relationship. I would recommend this film to pretty much anyone as it isn't just a chick flick as it may appear. It's a heartwarming film for the family and can be watched by all as there is something in it for everybody.

That part of the movie was sneaky because while it was sad to that point, when they get to the house etc I bawled because it was so lovely and even her mother could see it then.
Truly Finding Neverland was just a real gem of a movie and I couldn't believe it hadn't been taken earlier but I was certainly happy it hadn't been!
