Damned, I was just about to go for Blues Brothers! This last round has been a real killer, my shortlist is practically gone already. Back to the old drawing board...
Still, plenty of goodies left. For our 5th pick and 124th overall, Selfmade Heroes are proud to choose Gōsuto In Za Sheru/Kōkaku Kidōtai, better known simply as Ghost in the Shell (1995) for the Animation category.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/c/ca/Ghostintheshellposter.jpg/200px-Ghostintheshellposter.jpg
I strongly recommend never touching the English overdub, but simply fighting through the subtitled version, even if it will propably take at least couple of viewings to get a hold of all the plot (unless you read and think really fast). I'm usually not much of a purist, but the overdub is simply so horribly done that manages to almost completely destroy the mood and tones of the film through comical raspy machismo.
I know this is a somewhat unfair comparison, but I think you'll see what I mean by comparing the opening titles... (Warning, borderline NSFW.)

As to why see this movie, I think Jonathan Mays puts it pretty accurately:
"If the purpose of a review is to determine whether a film is worth viewing, there is little to say about Ghost in the Shell. It exists on the elite plane of modern anime masterpieces, and for this reason alone, it should be watched."

I believe habernac is back from vacation but to keep it going...
With the 117th pick, habernac selects The African Queen in the black and white category.
http://artfiles.art.com/images/-/The-African-Queen-Poster-Card-C10283452.jpeg
This film is actually in Technicolor (IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0043265/technical) or WIkipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_African_Queen)), although I can see how there can be confusion because all the stills are in monochrome.
P.S. Congrats to everyone who picked yesterday. Very impressive how quickly the picks were made as well as how excellent their quality was. My shortlist is hurting big time!

With our 5th pick, Team That's What She Said, would like to select from the Documentary category, the 2006 film - Shut Up & Sing.
This film follows the Dixie Chicks from the perch atop the music world in 2003 thru the death threats, public record/cd/dvd burnings & general abuse they received following a statement made by lead singer Natalie Maines at a concert in London. As the USA launched its attack on Iraq, an action questioned & criticized by many people at home and abroad and George W. Bush enjoying extremely high approval ratings, Maines said to her London audience, “Just so you know, we’re on the good side with y’all. We do not want this war, this violence, and we’re ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas.“
The documentary attempts to give context to her comment, which was made in the wake of a huge anti-war protest in London. Maines apparently wanted to show solidarity with the Brits and was taken aback that her quip sparked a firestorm in which the band was branded as traitors by some Americans.
The film examines the backlash created by her comment and takes a fascinating, fly-on-the-wall look at damage-control efforts. We see the Chicks and their families, their various reactions to the death threats, being called traitors and essentially discovering that, as the tagline for the film states: "Freedom of speech is fine as long as you don't do it in public."
I wasn't a huge Dixie Chicks fan before this but I am now a fan of these women - and the fact that agree with them or not, they showed that there is more to patriotism than just parading around with a flag in your hand and blindly following along with the people in charge.

With our 5th round, 127th overall, team snoogans is happy to select SWINGERS in the comedy category.
http://www.impawards.com/1996/posters/swingers_ver1.jpg
Mike (Jon Favreau (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon_Favreau)), a recent transplant to Los Angeles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Angeles), has recently broken up with his long-time girlfriend of six years and is still having trouble letting go and moving on. His friend Trent (Vince Vaughn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vince_Vaughn)) takes him on an overnight trip to Las Vegas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Las_Vegas,_Nevada) in an attempt to get him back in the game. Trent picks up two cocktail waitresses, but Mike's obsession with his ex-girlfriend spoils the one-night stand. Back in Los Angeles, Mike attends various Hollywood (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood) and Los Feliz hot spots while his swinger friends coach him on the rules of seduction. Mike makes several awkward attempts at speaking to women, but they all end disastrously. Along the way, the group discusses movies, video games, and their floundering careers in show business. When Mike learns to accept himself and eschew the pretenses and self-promotion involved in the Hollywood dating scene, he finally connects with a beautiful girl named Lorraine. The next day, he gets a call from the ex-girlfriend he's been obsessing over but rejects her offer to get back together when Lorraine rings in on the other line.

To make it a more formal post, the B-List Celeberties are proud to select the movie that made Marliyn Monroe a star - in the pre 1960's category, Some Like It Hot.
Maybe "nobody's perfect," as one character in this masterpiece suggests. But some movies are perfect, and Some Like It Hot is one of them. In Chicago, during the Prohibition era, two skirt-chasing musicians, Joe and Jerry (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon), inadvertently witness the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. In order to escape the wrath of gangland chief Spats Colombo (George Raft), the boys, in drag, join an all-woman band headed for Florida. They vie for the attention of the lead singer, Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe), a much-disappointed songbird who warbles "I'm Through with Love" but remains vulnerable to yet another unreliable saxophone player. (When Curtis courts her without his dress, he adopts the voice of Cary Grant--a spot-on impersonation.) The script by director Billy Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond is beautifully measured; everything works, like a flawless clock. Aspiring screenwriters would be well advised to throw away the how-to books and simply study this film. The bulk of the slapstick is handled by an unhinged Lemmon and the razor-sharp Joe E. Brown, who plays a horny retiree smitten by Jerry's feminine charms. For all the gags, the film is also wonderfully romantic, as Wilder indulges in just the right amounts of moonlight and the lilting melody of "Park Avenue Fantasy." Some Like It Hot is so delightfully fizzy, it's hard to believe the shooting of the film was a headache, with an unhappy Monroe on her worst behavior. The results, however, are sublime.

In the "Documentary/Non-Fiction" category, team Hot Buttery Topping is proud to select Ron Howard's ambitious and faithful dramatization of the incredible true events of the ill-fated lunar landing mission Apollo 13.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/9e/Apollo_thirteen_movie.jpg
Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, and Bill Paxton star as the astronauts aboard the Saturn V rocket which suffers a near-catastrophe while on its way to the moon. Ed Harris and Gary Sinise are among the earth-bound cast who must find a way to get the crew home -- alive.
Howard wanted his movie to be as technically accurate as possible, going so far as to shoot every scene that takes place in zero-gravity aboard NASA's weightlessness training vehicle, nicknamed "The Vomit Comet".
Mission Commander, Jim Lovell (who is portrayed by Hanks in the film), wrote the book "Lost Moon" about his experience aboard Apollo 13, and actively participated in the production to assure it remained as accurate to real events as possible. All of dialogue between the crew and mission control in Houston is based upon the archived transcripts of the mission communications.

After watching all sorts of short-listed picks fall off the board (Amelie, Strangelove, Donnie Darko, Malkovich, Trainspotting, Kill Bill, and especially Butch Cassidy), I figured it was time to fill a category that had a handful of options, but only one movie I really love- the first movie I ever saw in a theatre (at age 9 months), E.T. One of Steven Spielberg's true masterpieces, this is the quintessential family movie, and a film that I could watch again and again.
One of the most profound things about E.T. is that it seems to suck viewers in, as a flood of childhood memories wash over them. It's almost as if this wonderous state of innocence overtakes people, and whisks them back to being an age in the single digits. Little kids and great-grandparents sit there transfixed, and even film buffs, hip teenagers, and jaded adults find it irresistable and come along for the (bike) ride.
What is it about this film that does that? From a technical standpoint, Spielberg relied heavily on POV shots, so much so that almost the entire movie is seen through the eyes of either E.T. or Elliot. The camera is often low to the ground, bobbling around (think the chase/bike scenes), or obstructed (blanket over E.T.'s head), helping the viewer to experience and understand what's happening just like an innocent child (or alien) would. As the plot moves forward, and it becomes apparent that E.T. is sick and the evil scientists (see how I am in kid mode already?) are banging down doors looking for E.T., everything is seen from that same kid perspective. Viewers immediately and instinctively identify with both E.T. and Elliot, and tend to watch with a childlike sense of anticipation and wonderment.
Those technical decisions set up the emotional aspect of the film brilliantly. Of course the feelings brought about are helped by the outstanding acting by the child actors, one of John Williams' best scores, and some very memorable, classic scenes. However, the beautifully simple story of love, friendship, compassion, and unselfishness maintains to this day its power to render almost anybody completely stripped bare. Upon my most recent viewing, I remember tears trickling down my face during the last few minutes, completely overwhelmed and engrossed.
A movie for absolutely everyone, E.T. is a magical cinema experience, and I am happy to add it to The MacGuffins!

I am crossing a lot of movies off my list. Some really good picks made today.
I am surprised Office Space lasted so long, given the number of times it seems to get quoted on this board.
And Corpse Bride really was an underappreciated flick.

Nope, I don't have a list. Whenever its my turn to pick, that's when I do a little research, and by research, I mean checking to see if the movie I want has been taken.

I don't actually have a physical list for this draft, but a mental one. I know the movies I want for each category and if one gets chosen, I cross it off and replace it with something else. It's not like I have pages of research and the like...

Yeah, you are... ;)
But so am I. I have two seperate lists. One master list with all the movies listed alphabetically and a second that is alphabetically listed and divided by genre. I have another list of the tv shows that I own on DVD, and it's coded so I know which shows are still ongoing, which shows are no longer on the air, which shows I own in their entirety, etc. No links to websites. Maybe I should do that though... It's possible that I would feel even more satisfaction looking at the long list of movies I own.

Me too! I think I was too young to fully appreciate it when I first saw it, and with the praise it's received here and elsewhere, I need to revisit it.

I'm the only person I've met who does not like this film. Not slamming your pick, it is definitely considered a great film and most people love it. For my part, I've never been able to make it past about 30 minutes into the movie before I lose interest and turn it off. William H Macy's character just irritates the bejeebus out of me and I can't take it.

Awesome flick. Heavily decorated, including best picture. Walken is fantastic as a man completely broken and scarred by the horrors of POW life and becoming lost. Deniro not giving up on him, and the heartbreaking finale all make this a classic human experience and war flick. Talking to my father who was in Vietnam this is easily one of his favourite movies, although he always says it is one of the hardest movies for him to watch.

The MacGuffins are extremely happy to select, with their 6th team selection and 141st overall pick, for entry in the Drama category:
Requiem For A Dream
Harold, I'm gonna be on Television!
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y28/djroach/requiem-for-a-dream.jpg
An excerpt from Roger Ebert's review of the film:
The movie was given the worthless NC-17 rating by the MPAA; rejecting it, Artisan Entertainment is asking theaters to enforce an adults-only policy. I can think of an exception: Anyone under 17 who is thinking of experimenting with drugs might want to see this movie, which plays like a travelogue of hell.
A travelogue of hell indeed. Based on the equally graphic and disturbing book by Hubert Selby Jr., Requiem For A Dream tells the harrowing tale of four drug addicts falling under the spell of addiction with a blunt force that leaves most viewers spellbound. I watch the entire credit roll after most good films, but after seeing this film I always feel like I need to take that time to try and recover emotionally. What a depressing ride this film is, but oh is it worth it.
Some may consider this one an odd choice, as it's a difficult movie to endure from almost any standpoint. Technically, it's heavily stylized- split screens, slow motion, sped-up montages, time lapse photography, fades/dissolves, an emphatic and operatic score (IMO, one of the most memorable you'll ever encounter), distorted images, and some horrifying kitchen appliances. The acting is powerful (Burstyn gives a performance for the ages- she was robbed of the Oscar), and as the characters experience the ups and downs of drug use, we as viewers see the impressive range of emotions the actors are able to convey. That said, from an emotional standpoint, it's a tough cinematic experience, as the characters are nihlistically left to wallow in their pathetic addictions (the film has been criticized for this). Primarily, however, is the story, which is like a blow to the head with a mallet- there are no depths the characters will not seek out, and the jarring transitions from drug-addled bliss to deprived hysteria are exhausting.
So what is there to like? Well, it's not a fairy tale- it's an unflinching and brutallly honest look at the plauge of drug addiction. Once the viewer comes to grips with the fact that there can be no happy endings, it's all about the filmmaking and the acting. There is a compelling beauty in the grotesqueness of it all that makes you want to turn away and keep watching all at once.
As Aronofsky has noted, there are three distinct acts, or cinematic "requiems," and the subtle changes in mise en scene before and after each sequence are most intriguing. Things are all rosy right up to, and even during, the hit (or the breakfast, or the "score,"), and things are not so hot on the way back down. The background music ebbs and flows with the story, and when not soothing the characters with a false sense of calm, acts as an ominous predictor of things to come. The lighting changes from a glowing optimistic hue to a filtered, dark, cold one. The colors go from stark and vibrant to dull and depressing. From sunsets, kisses in elevators, and red dresses to prostitution, jail, amputation, and dementia, everything leads to a terrifying, dizzying conclusion after which most viewers are left shocked and silent. It is at this point that I had no choice but to forgive the script's shortcomings regarding the somewhat one-dimensional characters and its extreme views about the consequences of drug addictions, and simply applaud the powerful filmmaking.
Requiem For A Dream is a modern gem, and The MacGuffins are proud to add it to their squad.

"The power of Christ compels you. The power of Christ compels you."

For our sixth round pick, in the "Thriller/Horror" category, team Hot Buttery Topping is proud to select one of the greatest horror films ever made...From 1973, directed by William Friedkin, the 1974 Golden Globe winner for Best Drama, The Exorcist.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/7b/Exorcist_ver2.jpg/200px-Exorcist_ver2.jpg
William Peter Blatty won an Oscar for his screenplay, adapted from his own 1971 novel of the same name. Jason Miller (Father Karras), Ellen Burstyn (Chris MacNeil), and Linda Blair (Regan MacNeil) all received Oscar nominations for their performances. Both Friedkin and the film were also nominated for Academy Awards.
The Exorcist is considered by many to be the scariest movie of all time, and while it doesn't feature much of the gore or "killer around the corner" suspense of many more recent horror films, it is a film that gets into your mind and can be hard to shake.
The movie tells the tale of Chris MacNeil, a recently divorced actress and single mother. Chris and her 12 year-old daughter, Regan, have recently moved into a small home in the Georgetown area of Washington DC, where Chris is working on a new movie. Chris starts hearing strange noises coming from the attic, and soon Regan begins exhibiting strange behaviour that quickly goes beyond standard teen-angst and rebellion.
After medical and psychiatric evaluations return no scientific explanation, and as Regan's actions begin to go from strange to supernatural, and eventually deadly, Chris decides to consult with a young Catholic priest, Father Karras (who is undergoing his own crisis of faith surrounding his mother's death), about the possibility of performing an exorcism. Initially skeptical, Karras eventually is convinced to ask the Church's permission to perform an exorcism on Regan, who now claims to be possessed by the Devil himself. The Church sends Father Merrin (Max von Sydow in a Golden Globe nominated performance), an experienced exorcist, to Washington to assist Father Karras.
The exorcism scene is literally chilling, as Friedkin chose to shoot the scene on a refrigerated set so that the performers' breath would be visible on screen.
Linda Blair, who was 14 years-old when she made the movie, gives an incredible performance for such a young and relatively inexperienced actress. It is a role that, for better or worse, has defined Blair's career and changed her life forever. When the movie was originally released, she received death threats and Warner Bros. hired a security detail for her protection.
The movie was re-released in 2000, with numerous scenes that were originally cut from film restored, including the infamous "spider walk" scene and an extended ending.

In 1992, Quentin Tarantino was a relative unknown in the mainstream. It was until 1994's Pulp Fiction where he was a household name, but he did gain a lot of steam after making a funny, tragic, gruesome abd brillant crime thriller, Reservoir Dogs.
Starring Harvey Keitel, Steve Buscemi, Tim Roth and Michael Madsen, Reservoir Dogs is an absolute cult classic. Reservoir Dogs tells the story of seven strangers who attempt to pull of an elaborate jewel robbery, but all hell breaks loose and suspicions arise as a set up may have been in the works. Backed by an amazing soundtrack, Reservoir Dogs is a personal favorite and very nice addition to our squad.

Man there have been some great picks lately. Both Exorcist and Reservoir Dogs are such great movies.
So...team snoogans is happy to select in the Animation category, the movie that helped popularize Anime in the West...AKIRA
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a4/Cover-akira.jpg
The film is set in a neon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neon)-lit futuristic post-apocalyptic Tokyo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokyo) in 2019. While most of the character designs and basic settings were directly adapted from the original 2,182 page manga epic, the restructured plot of the movie differs considerably from the print version, pruning much of the last half of the book. Akira is regarded by critics as one of the greatest animated films ever made (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Films_considered_the_greatest_ever).[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akira_%28film%29#cite_note-autogenerated1-0) The movie led the way for the growing popularity of anime (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anime) in the West (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_world), with Akira considered a forerunner of the second wave of anime fandom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fandom) that began in the early 1990s. One of the reasons for the movie's success was the highly advanced quality of its animation. At the time, most anime was notorious for cutting production corners with limited motion, such as having only the characters' mouths move while their faces remained static. Akira broke from this trend with meticulously detailed scenes, exactingly lip-synched (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lip-synching#Animation) dialogue—a first for an anime production (voices were recorded before the animation was completed, rather than the opposite)—and super-fluid motion as realized in the film's more than 160,000 animation cels (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cel).[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akira_%28film%29#cite_note-AK3-1) Notable motifs in the film include youth culture, delinquency (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delinquency), Human fantasies with psychic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychic) abilities, social unrest and the world's reaction towards a nuclear holocaust (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_bombings_of_Hiroshima_and_Nagasaki) and Japan's post-war economic revival. The film also explores a number of psychological and philosophical themes, such as the nature of corruption, the will to power (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Will_to_power), and the growth from childhood to maturity both in individuals and the human race itself. Elements of Buddhist symbolism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhist_symbolism) are also present in the film.

For the next choice for the B-List Celebs we are proud to select in the category of War, Good Morning Vietnam.
Barry Levinson (Wag the Dog) directed this comedy-drama about an Armed Forces Radio disc jockey (Robin Williams) whose manic, hilarious delivery from a studio in 1965 Saigon gives U.S. troops in the field a morale boost (while upsetting military brass). Based on the real-life experiences of deejay Adrian Cronauer, the film is actually more concept than story: put Williams in front of a microphone and let him go nuts. Still, the surrounding stuff about the influence upon Cronauer of the endless deaths among his listeners--as Cronauer tries to stay funny while feeling the mounting losses--is affecting. Williams got a much-deserved Oscar nomination for his work.

With our 6th pick, team That's What She Said would like to select in the Drama category, Frailty. This film marks Bill Paxton's first foray into directing and he did a superb job with a relatively small budget, creating an ambience that added to the intensity of the film and not relying on gore or cgi to make the audience jump.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v710/Tavie/Frailty.jpg
This movie is one where you are constantly surprised and unsettled as you observe a normal family's decent into madness as the father of 2 boys claims to have had "visions from God" telling him to destroy demons that walk among the rest of society.
One son, after witnessing the eradication of the first demon brought home by his father, jumps on board with the plan claiming to have had his own vision. The older boy, feels his father has gone over the edge and does his best to end the killing he is witnessing.
To say any more would be to say too much....I just recommend watching this flick some night if you haven't already.

Out of all the films in the world, this might very well be the one that strikes closest to home. It's very hard to say exactly what makes this movie special, yet it is very much so. It's constantly funny, flows very naturally. It's also so very true to life, it loves it's characters dearly and understands them even when they are being complete pricks.
I absolutely love this film. Everytime I see it, I feel happy and melancholic, and feel that I have learned something about myself and life. There is no way I would ever want to try and review this film objectively.

"Look at these. I used to dream I'd be surrounded by exotic women's underwear forever and ever. Now I know they just save their best pairs for the nights they know they're going to sleep with somebody. "
"She didn't make me miserable, or anxious, or ill at ease. You know, it sounds boring, but it wasn't. It wasn't spectacular either. It was just good. But really good. "

Heavy Metal is a 1981 Canadian animated film from executive producer Leonard Mogel, with Ivan Reitman producing and Gerald Potterton directing, the work flow was expedited by having several animation houses working simultaneously on different segments.
The film is an anthology of various science fiction and fantasy stories adapted from Heavy Metal magazine and original stories in the same spirit. Like the magazine, the film has an unusual amount of bloody violence, nudity and sexuality for an animated film.

I think if you're picking for a musical category, it should be a musical like Wizard of Oz or something like that, not a movie about music. The point of this game was to do research on movies to fill a certain category, not continually broadening the category to make things easier.

I respect your opinion but I thought the point of this game was about having fun. Why does everything have to become so difficult? Moreover, GirlySports came up with this idea and has spent a lot of time running it for our enjoyment and as the commish makes the decisions.
A movie with the Music genre tag on IMDB obviously has music as a main theme of the movie. What's wrong with using that as the measuring stick?
Whatever, like I said, this should be about fun and not an exercise in proving how good your research is. Maybe, that's just me.
edit: And looking over the picks does anybody not agree that "Pink Floyd: The Wall" and "Purple Rain" have music as a main theme of them and as such better belong in some sort of music or musical category?

This post was from 08-05. What did you think of these movies?
I've been catching a lot of Picked movies on AMC (channel 47 on Shaw in Calgary) recently. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly was just on last night and again this morning. Superb! Later is the first of the trilogy, followed by The Usual Suspects, and Apollo 13.

With our 6th pick, BF & the BFFs are proud to select, in the category of War, the late Anthony Minghella's WW2 masterpiece... One of the better novel adaptations you will ever see - not in terms of faithfulness to the source material, but in terms of adapting the novel for a different medium, creating a new work of art that can stand alone, but that also maintains the spirit and feeling of the original... Featuring a top-notch cast, breathtaking cinematography, and a brilliant score... One of the least linear plots to win best picture in the last 20 years... The English Patient
http://bbs.chinadaily.com.cn/attachments/month_0711/The-English-Patient-movie_7OqrcLnnoJij.jpg
The film garnered widespread critical acclaim and was a major award winner as well as a box office (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Box_office) success; its awards included the Academy Award for Best Picture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award_for_Best_Picture), the Golden Globe Award (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Globe_Award) and the BAFTA Award for Best Film (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BAFTA_Award_for_Best_Film). Juliette Binoche (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juliette_Binoche) won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award_for_Best_Supporting_Actress), winning out over Lauren Bacall (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lauren_Bacall) for The Mirror Has Two Faces (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mirror_Has_Two_Faces) (it would have been Bacall's only Oscar win, and in her acceptance speech Binoche commented that she had expected Bacall to win). Anthony Minghella (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Minghella) took home the Oscar for Best Director. Kristin Scott Thomas and Ralph Fiennes were nominated for Best Actress and Best Actor. In all, The English Patient was nominated for an impressive 12 awards and ultimately walked away with 9. It is the highest-grossing non-IMAX (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMAX) film (and second highest-grossing film overall) to never reach the weekend box office top 5.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_English_Patient_%28film%29#cite_note-1)
An episode of Seinfeld (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_English_Patient_%28Seinfeld_episode%29) was devoted to lampooning the film's fervent supporters: Elaine is dumped by her boyfriend because of her tepid response to the film, and her critique culminates with the outburst, "Quit telling your stupid story, about the stupid desert, and just die already! Die!!".
Since weekend box office top 10 rankings were first recorded in 1982, The English Patient and Amadeus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amadeus_%28film%29) are the only two Best Picture winners to never enter the weekend box office top 5.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_English_Patient_%28film%29#cite_note-2)[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_English_Patient_%28film%29#cite_note-3)
Pulitzer Prize (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulitzer_Prize) winning critic Roger Ebert (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Ebert), from the Chicago Sun Times (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_Sun_Times) gave the movie a 4 star rating, saying that "It is the kind of movie you can see twice--first for the questions, the second time for the answers."[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_English_Patient_%28film%29#cite_note-4)

No time today to see if it's been picked or to put up the usual goodies, so perhaps I will later.
But in the interest of keeping this thing moving along, I don't think it's been picked yet, so with Team Pineapple's sixth round pick, we are proud to select in the category of Thriller, A Few Good Men (1992). It stars (a pre-crazy) Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson and Demi Moore (as the most useless chick ever).
Great movie, the courtroom scenes are fantastic. I can recite most of the lines by heart, I've seen it so many times. And it spawned the catch phrase, "You can't handle the truth!"

I didn't get a chance to post any goodies for my sixth round pick, A Few Good Men, so here it is, for those that may be interested.
Plot/Cast Info
Released in 1992, A Few Good Men (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104257/) stars Tom Cruise as Navy lawyer Daniel Kaffee, who is picked to defend two marines on trial for murder. Demi Moore and Kevin Pollock are assigned to help him prepare his case. Kevin Bacon plays Cpt. Jack Ross, who is prosecuting the case. Jack Nicholson plays Jessop, a high ranking Colonel at the base where the murder took place. Noah Wylie, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Keifer Sutherland all have bit parts.
As an aside, did anyone else hate Demi Moore in this movie? I hated her character in this movie. I said earlier, she was completely useless in this film. The character was just irritating. Just had to say that. That would be my biggest complaint about this film.
Trivia
Tom Cruise impersonates Jack Nicholson in the film, it was not scripted.
In the scene where Sutherland is driving Cruise and co. around the base to conduct their investigation, Sutherland had trouble driving the wide vehicle and actually hit several of the soldiers in a few of the takes.
The word "sir" is said 164 times, an average of once every 50 seconds.
The line "You can't handle the truth" ranked #29 on the American Films Institutes top 100 movie quotations, and #92 on Premieres "100 Greatest Move Lines."
Youtube Stuff
Here is a short trailer for the film:
lvfxCM9AU_E
Here is the opening of the film. I figured I would include it because I think it's pretty darn neat to watch, so enjoy:
IjLyz8OAj1s
The film itself is famous for its courtroom drama, in particular, the confrontation between Colonel Jessop (Nicholson) and Lt. Kaffee (Cruise).
Here is that scene, courtesy of Youtube.
***Two warnings here: This is the climax of the film, so if you haven't seen it and don't want it ruined, don't watch this clip. Secondly, there's some questionable language so NSFW.***
hopNAI8Pefg
This is my favourite scene, aside from the courtroom scene above.
This is the scene where Moores character has screwed up and hurt the case, so Kaffee gets drunk and tells her what's what. I love it.
"Galactically Stupid," that's awesome.
***This scene occurs late in the film, so it's slightly spoiler-ish***

With our 6th round pick, Direct2Video selects A Fistful of Dollars in the Western category.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e4/Fistful_Macaroni.jpg
A Fistful of Dollars was at first intended by Leone to reinvent the western genre in Italy. In his opinion the American westerns of the mid to late nineteen-fifties had become stagnant, overly-preachy and unbelievable and because of this Hollywood began to gear down on the production of such films. Leone knew that there was still a significant market in Europe for westerns yet also realised that Italian audiences of the time were beginning to laugh at the stock conventions of both the American westerns and pastiche work of Italian directors hiding under pseudonyms. His approach was to take the grammar of the Italian film and transpose it into a western setting. Clint Eastwood was not the first actor who was approached to play the main character. Originally, Sergio Leone intended Henry Fonda (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Fonda) to play the role of the "Man With No Name". However, the production company could not afford to engage a major Hollywood star. Hereupon, Leone offered Charles Bronson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Bronson) the part who, in turn, declined the role arguing the script was too bad. Both Fonda and Bronson would later star in Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Once_Upon_a_Time_in_the_West) (1968 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1968_in_film)). Other actors who turned the role down were Ty Hardin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ty_Hardin) and James Coburn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Coburn). Leone then turned his attentions towards Richard Harrison (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Harrison_%28actor%29), who had recently starred in the very first Italian western, Gunfight at Red Sands (Duello nel Texas). Harrison, however, had not been impressed with his experience on his previous film, and refused. The producers later established a list of available, lesser-known American actors, and asked Harrison for advice. Harrison suggested Clint Eastwood, whom he knew could play a cowboy convincingly. Harrison later stated: "Maybe my greatest contribution to cinema was not doing Fistful of Dollars, and recommending Clint for the part".

The Roger Ebert Experience is proud to select, in the best picture category, the epic western Dances with Wolves.
At almost 4 hours, it seems long, but I remember it going by very quickly the first time I saw it. Terrific cast, wonderful story and great acting. Rodney A Grant is probably my favourite character in the movie. Lots of people get down on Costner for whatever reason, but he's had some terrific films.
http://sb3143.k12.sd.us/year/images/picture11.jpg
Dances with Wolves is a 1990 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1990) epic film (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epic_film) which tells the story of a United States Lieutenant who travels to the American Frontier to find a military post. He eventually befriends a local Sioux tribe.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dances_with_Wolves#cite_note-allmov-0) Developed by director/star Kevin Costner (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Costner) over 5 years, the film (released November 9 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/November_9), 1990 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1990)) has high production values[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dances_with_Wolves#cite_note-allmov-0) and won 7 Academy Awards (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award) (1990) and the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture - Drama (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Globe_Award_for_Best_Motion_Picture_-_Drama).[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dances_with_Wolves#cite_note-imdb-1) Much of the dialogue is in the Lakota language (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lakota_language) with English (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_language) subtitles, unusual for a film at the time of its release. It was shot in South Dakota (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Dakota) and Wyoming (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wyoming).
In 2007, Dances with Wolves was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Film_Registry) by the Library of Congress (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Library_of_Congress) as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dances_with_Wolves#cite_note-registry-2)
Originally written as a spec script (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spec_script) by Michael Blake (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Blake), it went unsold in the mid-1980s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1980s). It was Kevin Costner (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Costner) who, in early 1986 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1986) (when he was relatively unknown), encouraged Blake to turn the screenplay into a novel, to improve its chances of being adapted into a film. The novel manuscript of Dances with Wolves was rejected by numerous publishers but finally published in paperback in 1988 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1988). As a novel, the rights were purchased by Costner, with an eye to his directing it.[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dances_with_Wolves#cite_note-3) Actual filming lasted from July 18 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/July_18) to November 23 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/November_23), 1989 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1989). Most of the movie was filmed on location in South Dakota (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Dakota), but a few scenes were filmed in Wyoming (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wyoming). Filming locations included the Badlands National Park (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Badlands_National_Park), the Black Hills (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Hills), the Sage Creek Wilderness Area, and the Belle Fourche River (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belle_Fourche_River) area. The buffalo hunt scenes were filmed at the Triple U Buffalo Ranch (http://web.archive.org/web/20060502133152/http://www.tripleuranch.com/htm/dances_with_wolves.shtml) near Pierre, South Dakota (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre,_South_Dakota), as were the fort Sedgwick scenes, the set being constructed on the property. [5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dances_with_Wolves#cite_note-4)
Because of budget overruns and production delays, and the general perception, after the fiasco of Michael Cimino's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Cimino) Heaven's Gate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heaven%27s_Gate_(film)), then considered one of the most mismanaged Westerns (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_(genre)) in film history (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_film), Costner's project was satirically (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satire) dubbed "Kevin's Gate" by Hollywood critics and skeptics during the months prior to its release. [6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dances_with_Wolves#cite_note-5)
The language spoken in the film is a fairly accurate, although simplified[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)], version of the actual Lakota language (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lakota_language). Lakota Sioux language instructor Doris Leader Charge (1931--2001) was the on-set Lakota dialogue coach and also portrayed Pretty Shield, wife of Chief Ten Bears, portrayed by Floyd Red Crow Westerman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floyd_Red_Crow_Westerman).[7] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dances_with_Wolves#cite_note-6)
According to the "Making Of" documentary (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Documentary_film) on the Special Edition Dances With Wolves DVD, not all of the buffalo were computer animated and/or puppets. In fact, Costner and crew employed the largest domestically owned buffalo ranch, with two of the domesticated buffalo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Bison) being borrowed from Neil Young (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_Young), and used the herd for the hunting scene. The hunt chase was filmed live and Costner did his own stunts for the shots. The only computer animation and puppetry special effects that were used were for the shots of the buffalo falling.
Despite portraying the adopted daughter of Graham Greene (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graham_Greene_(actor))'s character Kicking Bird, Mary McDonnell, then 37, was actually two months older than Greene, and less than two years younger than Tantoo Cardinal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tantoo_Cardinal), the actress playing her adoptive mother. In addition, McDonnell was extremely nervous about shooting her sex (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missionary_position) scene (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex_in_film) with Kevin Costner (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Costner), requesting it be toned down to a more modest version (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modesty#Modest_versions_of_nudity) than what was scripted.[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dances_with_Wolves#cite_note-7)

I didn't watch most of it, but I was channel surfing later, and caught a couple scenes of it that seemed to have great, emotionally rich, but not over-the-top dialogue. Seemed to be a very different role for Tony Curtis than most of the ligth comedy films I've seen him in.

With the 157th pick, Team REDVAN will chose
Open Range, in the western category.
I enjoy this movie because it has some excellent performances by the actors. There are a lot of good westerns out there, but this one was filmed in the Calgary area so I have to give it higher points for that.

great, great movie, Redvan. Another Costner gem. When Duvall was filming it, he was in downtown Calgary a number of times, was a patron at a friend's restaurant and was extremely polite.

With the 158th pick, Team MissTeeks selects in the comedy category, Dazed and Confused. This is one of my favorite movies of all time, and I'm a little surprised it was still available. This movie follows around a group of high school kids on the last day of school in 1976. It stars some future Hollywood hotshots Ben Affleck and Matthew McConaughey, but my favorite character was always Rory Cochrane as Slater. My parents tell me that this was so much like their days in high school it was scary. It's full of great quotes and has a totally kick-ass soundtrack. My friend and I listen to it in the car all the time.

With the 159th pick, Team Clint Eastwood selects Heat (1995) in the Drama category (for the time being).
http://www.follow-me-now.de/assets/images/Heat-Filmplakat.jpg
Aside from its landmark status as being the first movie to feature cinematic legends Robert De Niro and Al Pacino on screen at the same time - reason enough to warrant heavyweight status - Michael Mann's absolutely epic crime drama is packed with goodies: a deep, all-star cast, a compelling and intricate story that unfolds seamlessly, and of course, superlative direction by Mann, who has released several highly-esteemed films - none of which, I venture, come close to the achievements he makes in this one.
I didn't see this movie until a few years ago and it instantly vaulted to favorite status; I am equally enthralled by successive viewings. Mann does so many things right: the entire movie was shot on location without a single soundstage, giving it an ultra-real effect. The two major action setpieces in the film - both robberies - benefit from taking place on Los Angeles streets and Mann ups the realism by letting the sound effects rule the atmosphere; no music is used in these scenes. The latter sequence especially is gripping for its depiction of combat-zone brutality on a crowded downtown avenue in broad daylight (evidently this scene was actually screened for US Marine recruits at one point as an example of how to retreat while under fire - more trivia here (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113277/trivia)). Indeed, the setting in this film is as important as any of the characters, playing a large role in all of the scenes; a romance that develops between De Niro and the character played by Amy Brenneman is all the more compelling for taking place in busy restaurants and overlooking the distinctive L.A. landscape at night, with its blinking lights - Mann uses effective filters to enhance the humid, muggy atmosphere.
I have a minor quibble with the ending - I would have rolled credits before the inevitable final chase - but even this is inconsequential; the way the film does wrap up nicely punctuates the respectful back-and-forth between the two leads. The storyline that engages these men works as a perfect parallel for their real-life personas.
The aforementioned robbery shooutout sequence - best viewed on a big screen with a pumping soundsystem (some spoilers in this sequence!)

With the 160th pick It's Just A Flesh Wound is proud to select another personal favourite, "Local Hero" (1983). This will represent, bizarrely IMO, our Foreign selection, it being a UK film and all!
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/6/6a/Local_Hero_Poster.jpg/200px-Local_Hero_Poster.jpg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Local_Hero_Poster.jpg)
"Local Hero is a 1983 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1983_in_film) Scottish comedy film (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comedy_film) starring Peter Riegert (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Riegert), Denis Lawson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denis_Lawson) and Burt Lancaster (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burt_Lancaster). It was directed by Bill Forsyth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Forsyth) and produced by David Puttnam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Puttnam).[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_Hero#cite_note-0)
The film is set in the fictional fishing village of Ferness on the west coast of Scotland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scotland). A young representative of an American oil company is sent to the village on a mission. The film features a notable ensemble of character parts."
There's just something about this little movie that makes it a real gem. Sure it is a little dated now but the characters, location, and music make it a classic in my eyes. If you haven't seen it I would highly recommend you rent it at least. Perhaps you'll fall in love with it as I did....
Oh yeah, this movie also features my signature below. "It's red all over" exclaims Mac when he observes the Northern Lights for the first time.

With the 161st pick, in the CP Movie Draft, StrayBullet selects Oldboy
I love this movie. It was either this one or City Of God for my foreign slot, and I was strongly considering taking this one later on as a wildcard if it was still available.
For all its flaws, it's a triumphant display of filmmaking. It's part B-movie, part John Woo, and part Greek tragedy. With a healthy dose of bloody gore and expert camera work. Lots of memorable scenes, an original and intriguing premise, and it pulsates with life.
It won the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes the year Tarantino headed the jury committee, so it comes Quentin approved, and after you've seen it, it's easy to see why.
Nice pick!
Also, we are really flying now fellas. Kickass!

With our 6th round pick, 162nd overall, The Team With No Name is proud to select in the category of Musical, Fiddler on the Roof!
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067093/
This movie was released in the year I was born. It's the story of a Russian Jew trying to find husbands for his three daughters in pre-revolution Russia. I just latched onto the historical aspects of the movie and really ignored the song and dance stuff when I first watched it as a kid. Now, I appreciate it as an exceptional musical which happens to be set in an extremely intriguing place and time period!

Easily the best Civil War movie ever made, IMO. The film focuses on the first all volunteer African-American unit to serve in the Civil War. You can just imagine the amount of great plot material that can come from that. Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, Andre Braugher. Great actors. My only beef with this movie is the casting of Matthew Broderick as Col Shaw. Really difficult for me to see him as anything but a goofy rick kid skipping school. Not his fault, I know, but I didn't find him very believable. Probably more about my view of him than his performance. This movie won 3 oscars...one for Denzel for best supporting, another for it's absolutely spectacular cinematography and a third for sound. If you haven't seen it, do it!

It's Just A Flesh Wound is thrilled to select, with our 7th round pick, the movie that made Humphrey Bogart a major movie star, and influenced an entire genre;
"The Maltese Falcon (1941)"
Some housekeeping required to select this pick. "Rear Window" will be moved to the Thriller category and "The Maltese Falcon" takes the Pre-60's slot.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/99/Falconm.JPG (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/99/Falconm.JPG)
The Maltese Falcon is a 1941 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1941_in_film) Warner Bros. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warner_Bros.) film written and directed by John Huston (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Huston), based on the novel of the same name (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Maltese_Falcon) by Dashiell Hammett (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dashiell_Hammett), and starring Humphrey Bogart (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humphrey_Bogart) as private investigator (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_investigator) Sam Spade (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Spade), Mary Astor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Astor) as his femme fatale (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Femme_fatale) client, Sydney Greenstreet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydney_Greenstreet) in his film debut, and Peter Lorre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Lorre). The film was Huston's directorial debut and was nominated for three Academy Awards (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Awards).
The story concerns the entanglement of a San Francisco private investigator with three greedy, unscrupulous and murderous adventurers who compete with each other to obtain a fabulous jewel-encrusted statuette of a falcon worth millions.
The Maltese Falcon has been named as one of the greatest films of all time by Roger Ebert (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Ebert),[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Maltese_Falcon_%281941_film%29#cite_note-Ebert-0) and Entertainment Weekly (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entertainment_Weekly),[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Maltese_Falcon_%281941_film%29#cite_note-EW-1) and was cited by Panorama du Film Noir Américain, the French book that coined the term film noir (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film_noir), as the first film of that genre.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Maltese_Falcon_%281941_film%29#cite_note-Sklar-2)
The film premiered on October 3 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_3), 1941 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1941_in_film) in New York City (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City) and in 1989 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1989_in_film) was selected for inclusion in the Library of Congress (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Library_of_Congress)' National Film Registry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Film_Registry).

I couldn't keep my eyes off the screen when I first saw this. The images and cinematics in the movie were not seen/done before(In 1999). There were times when you were rooting for the protagonist and moments where you could have been against them. The acting was first-rate --This film probably pushed Ice Cube into taking acting more seriously and George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg do their thing, convincing us of their roles.

Team Clint Eastwood selects 166th overall (I think) in the Sci-Fi category, Ghostbusters (1984).
http://chud.com/articles/content_images/5/Ghostbusters.jpg
Quite surprised no one has taken this one yet - seems a rather conspicuous choice! Happy to have it. (hope I didn't miss it somewhere along the line, didn't see it on the draft board)
The original and arguably reigning king of comedy blockbusters, Ghostbusters is ubiquitous in more ways the one, be it the trademark logo you still see the odd dork brandishing on a t-shirt or the theme song - this at its very worst a hallmark of Halloween club crawls, used to draw the obligatory foursome of Ghostbuster-jumpsuit-costumed hotties onto the speakerboxes. I can recall one instance during a sobering meeting with the boss where at one point the question "Who are you going to call?" was asked of me and my response was automatic. It actually effectively cut the tension of the meeting - got the boss laughing.
As a kid I was fascinated by the supernatural storyline (I still jump a bit during the scene when the librarian morphs into a hideous monster - this scene scared the living sh-t out of me when I was younger) and the cool gadgets; now I am better able to appreciate the humor behind Dan Aykroyd's creations. I laugh out loud at virtually every piece of dialogue spoken by Harold Ramis as the "always serious" Egon; his response "Print is dead" when flirtatiously asked by his secretary if he enjoys reading kills me. Bill Murray's performance is all-time and he manages to generate some great chemistry with Signourney Weaver, who is also spot-on.
I could go on and on but you've all seen this movie... I got a chance to see it on the big screen the other night at a revival theatre, and I highly recommend seeing it this way if you ever can. It was an original, unrestored print so the picture was ultra-grainy and the soundtrack was crackly as hell - it was great!
Venkman: I dunno, it just seems a little pricey for a unique fixer-upper... what do you think, Egon?
Egon: I think this building should be condemned. There's serious metal fatigue in all the load-bearing members, the wiring is substandard, it's completely inadequate for our power needs and the neighborhood is like a demilitarized zone.
Ray Stantz: Hey! Does this pole still work?? [he slides down] Wow! This place is GREAT! When can we move in? You've gotta try this pole! We should stay here - tonight! You know, try it out! I'm gonna get my stuff!
Venkman: I think we'll take it.

I think that if the time travel is the result of science, it belongs in science-fiction rather than fantasy, but then my fantasy pick (The Prestige) is one where a seemingly magical thing is in fact the result of science, too. Honestly, I think the fantasy category is probably the most poorly defined of all IMDB's, as it has a very fuzzy line with science fiction, horror, and other genres, and also includes a lot of movies that I would consider magic realism.
Anyway, great to see both Back to the Future and Ghostbusters get picked.

Sorry if there has been a delay guys, with pick 167, team REDVAN will take
School of Rock in the musical category.
It's getting tough now. I know there a lot of movie I was going to pick, but I am gambling that they are going to be around in a few rounds. Good luck everyone.
I got a chance to see it on the big screen the other night at a revival theatre, and I highly recommend seeing it this way if you ever can. It was an original, unrestored print so the picture was ultra-grainy and the soundtrack was crackly as hell - it was great!
Are you in Toronto? We were checking out some of those theatres this week, and I remember seeing Ghostbusters listed as playing in August. We are interested in going to one if we have time, and if there's a cool oldie we wanna see. Is there one in particular that you recommend?
Nice pick, btw. Bill Murray is my favorite actor, and he's awesome in this one.

Fay Dunaway and Jack Nicholson star in the gritty, dark film set around the battle to bring water to Los Angeles. Robert Towne's script is an absolute masterpiece, earning the best screenplay award at the Oscars, Golden Globes, BAFTA, and Writer's Guild of America. The film also won the Golden Globe for best picture, and Nicholson and Polanski both won awards for their work. The AFI also routinely sites this as one of the best american films ever made.

The one I saw Ghostbusters at is just down from where I have been staying, on Queen Street East. It is called the Fox (www.foxtheatre.ca), which underwent renovations (and new ownership I think) last year. The seats recline and are very comfortable, and they've got old movie theatre memoriabilia throughout (including several old projectors and posters, my favorite being the one for Chinatown that's just above the john in the bathroom). Normally they function as more of a second-run joint; if you check out their September schedule it's full of Wall-E and Get Smart. Ghostbusters was a part of an 80s film series they did this month - I wanted to get out for Robocop and Weird Science but didn't have time.
I'd recommend checking it out if the upcoming schedule were better, because it really is a quaint old haunt and for me $10 was money well spent for the Ghostbusters experience. As far as other similar theatres in the city, I am not sure as I haven't been here long, but from my understanding the Fox - endless Crystal Skull reruns notwithstanding - is quite reputable.

6 Degrees of Troy McClure selects, in the Thriller category, Roman Polanski's noir masterpiece, Chinatown.
I've seen this one three times. The first time because I heard it was a must-see classic, but was not yet as learned in the art of cinema as I am today. Verdict --> bleh. The second time I watched for a film class in Kelowna while we were studying film noir, and learned to appreciate it a little more. But I was still underwhelmed. I had it arrive via Zip a few months and gave it another shot, and was once again sorta bored.
It's not that it hasn't aged well, and the acting/directing are top notch. I think maybe the subject matter/surprise revelation was perhaps more shocking back in the 70's than it would be today, and that it didn't affect me as much as it would have if I had seen it as a young man growing up back then? I dunno. Noir is a great genre, but this one was sorta like Miller's Crossing to me, a film from a brilliant director that is well respected and admired, but that I just didn't find all that engaging, and therefore didn't enjoy all that much. I dunno. Sorry for slagging your pick Octo.:bag: For the record, The Royal Tenenbaums is also one of my favorite movies.:D

This one gets lost in the shuffle sometimes I think. It's gotta be the lame ass sequels. But for a family friendly summer blockbuster kinda movie, this one can still get your heart racing, and does just about everything right. Awesome pick, one I had on my short list in a few different categories.
the Roger Ebert Experience is proud to select, in the comedy category, the Guy Ritchie classic: Snatch
Love this movie as well, and it was also pencilled in a few different spots because of its many possible classifications. My only criticism would be that it's essentially a reworking of Ritchie's first and and equally as entertaining movie Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels, with some different twists and turns.
But like Dis has said a few times, how awesome is Brad Pitt in this one? And how many of you have watched it with the subtitles on just so you make out what the *%$# he is saying half the time?
I've heard good things about his new movie RockNRolla (http://%22http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1032755/%22%5BB), and am going to try and see it Toronto at the TIFF.

Team Pineapple Express has managed to pry herself away from wrapping wedding favours long enough to make her seventh round pick, in the category of drama, The Notebook (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0332280/).
Released in 2004, The Notebook stars two young, up and coming Canadians, Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. It is based on the best selling novel by author Nicolas Sparks.
I am sure there's lots of interesting trivia, etc, for this film, but I don't have the time right now.
Perhaps later...

Okay, I've got some time now....
The Notebook centers around an old man telling a tale of love and romance to an old woman in a nursing home. The story follows the relationship of a young couple, Noah and Allie, over the span of several years.
The film stars Ryan Gosling (hot), Rachel McAdams (the men folk seem to like her), James Garner (wasn't too bad back in the day), Gena Rowlands, James Marsden (really hot), Sam Shepard and Joan Allen.
Trivia
Ryan Gosling made the kitchen table featured in the film in preparation for the role of Noah.
Gena Rowlands, who plays the older version of Allie, is director's (Nick Cassavetes) mother.
Gosling wore brown eye contacts because James Garner, who plays older Noah, has brown eyes.
Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake were originally considered for the roles of Allie and Noah.
Tom Cruise, Steven Spielberg, Reese Witherspoon and Ashley Judd were all attached to the project at one point, but backed out.

Yeah, for me the twist isn't really shocking, there's definitely other more recent movies that use the same twist and probably use it to better effect (I won't say what movies, as that would give the twist away). But for me, this movie is mostly about the script: the dialogue just pops, and what could be a very convoluted story is delivered at a quick pace; and the scope of it is great: most noir films focus on fairly small-time crime plots or maybe at most, police force corruption. But in telling the story of the creation of LA's water-system, there's a fascinating slice of history in this movie, as well, with characters loosely based on actual LA historical figures like Mulholland. I'm not really a fan of Nicholson or Dunaway overall, and there's one or two other Polanski films that I enjoy, but I wouldn't count him among my favorite directors. Yet this film just sticks in my head. And I don't mind you slagging my pick, I'm happy to defend it.

"I like your nurses uniform, guy"

And just cause I liked the flick another favourite quotation...
Herman: "You guys have it real easy. I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and your going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you. "

Yippie-Kay-Yay is happy to select in the category of Comedy, Matt & Trey's masterpiece:
Orgazmo
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0006HBZEW.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
Orgazmo is a 1997 comedy-action film written by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of the animated series South Park, and directed by Trey Parker.
The film revolves around mild-mannered Mormon missionary Joe Young (Trey Parker), who gets talked into starring in a porno movie by the famous porn director Maxxx Orbison (Michael Dean Jacobs) in order to earn enough money to marry his fiancée Lisa (Robyn Lynne Raab), in the Salt Lake City temple.
In the movie-within-the-movie, he plays a superhero named "Orgazmo" who fights crime with his sidekick "Choda Boy", played by Ben Chapleski (Dian Bachar) using his signature weapon, the "Orgazmorator", a device that forcefully triggers climax in those he uses it on. Following an agreement with the director, Joe acts and fights while a "stunt " does the rest. Orgazmo goes on to be a smash hit, and the director decides to exploit the missionary and make the movie into a series. Joe's fiancée is upset at his role in the film and leaves, and is kidnapped by the director to ensure Joe's participation in further filming.
Joe then decides to fight back using a real Orgazmorator invented by Ben, which gives him the powers his character purportedly had. He uses these powers to bring down the corrupt filmmaker and rescue his fiancée. The film wraps up with Lisa, seeing Ben's distress at the thought of his friend moving back to Utah, declaring that Joe must stay and fight crime with him. Ben, after a prayer from Joe, concludes by saying, "god bless us...every one!" (a parody of Tiny Tim's line at the end of A Christmas Carol).

As our 7th round pick Self-made Heroes is proud to pick Paths of Glory (1957) in the Pre-1960's category. Possibly the best movie by Kubrick in my opinion.
Corporal Paris: See that cockroach? Tomorrow morning, we'll be dead and it'll be alive. It'll have more contact with my wife and child than I will. I'll be nothing, and it'll be alive.
[Ferol smashes the roach]
Private Ferol: Now you got the edge on him.

"Paths Of Glory was the first time Stanley Kubrick got to work with a major star - and in the late 1950s, stars didn't come any more major than Kirk Douglas. He championed this 'hard to sell' anti-war film to the Hollywood studios, and bankrolled the 28-year-old tyro director who, with his growing reputation, still had it all to prove in Hollywood. And with his indignant performance Douglas provides an emotional counterbalance to Kubrick's chilly, conceptual style."
"Adapted from Humphrey Cobb's based-on-fact novel, the film tells the story of a botched WWI French attack. In return for a promised promotion, General Mireau (George Macready), charges his troops with the impossible task of storming Ant Hill, a German position. The attack is led by Colonel Dax (Kirk Douglas), who dutifully leads his men into the German guns. When the attack dissolves into chaos and a rout, the furious general first orders his artillery to fire on his own men, and, to pass the blame, chooses three soldiers at random to go before a court martial to explain their cowardice, with Dax acting as defence counsel."

KTcbVmNUOms
When interviewed in 1969, Kirk Douglas recalled Paths of Glory as the summit of his acting career: "There's a picture that will always be good, years from now. I don't have to wait 50 years to know that; I know it now."

Our pick this round is in the Sports category, and That's What She Said is proud to select: Field of Dreams.
This 1989 movie starring Kevin Costner as Ray Kinsella, a farmer determined to keep his land that hears a voice among the tall corn saying, "If you build it, he will come." He begins a journey that involves plowing part of his field to build a baseball diamond where the ghosts of former MLB players came to throw the ball around and play. His journey affirms his love for the purity of the game and helps him (and a few others) resolve issues that they had buried in the past and planned to leave there.
This film was a movie that dealt with many things, but at its heart it was about the love of a boy for his father and the uber-American past-time of baseball. Before the strikes that ruined several seasons and the steroids that have come to haunt the MLB of today. This is my favourite of the Costner baseball movies altho Bull Durham is pretty awesome too.

To be fair, this wasn't per se a baseball movie the way Bull Durham or even Major League are....this is a movie where the baseball is coincidental to the larger story.

With the next pick for the B-List Celebs we are proud to select in the category of Black and White, Night of the Living Dead.
http://haunttheplanet.org/images/Night_of_the_Living_Dead_affiche.jpg
Chaos descends upon the world as the brains of the recently deceased become inexplicably reanimated, causing the dead to rise and feed on human flesh. Speculation rests on a radiation-covered NASA satellite returning from Venus, but it only remains a speculation. Anyone who dies during the crisis of causes unrelated to brain trauma will return as a flesh-eating zombie, including anyone who has been bitten by a zombie. The only way to destroy the zombies is to destroy the brain. As the catastrophe unfolds, a young woman visiting her father's grave takes refuge in a nearby farmhouse, where she is met by a man who protects her and barricades them inside. They both later discover people hiding in the basement, and they each attempt to cope with the situation. Their only hope rests on getting some gasoline from a nearby pump into a truck that is running on empty, but this requires braving the hordes of ravenous walking corpses outside. When they finally put their plans into action, panic and personal tensions only add to the terror as they try to survive.

with the 7th round, 181st overall pick, team snoogans is happy to select in the war category, Jarhead.
Jarhead is a 2005 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005_in_film) film (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film) based on U.S. Marine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Marine_Corps) Anthony Swofford (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Swofford)'s 2003 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003_in_literature) Gulf War (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulf_War) memoir (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memoir) Jarhead: A Marine's Chronicle of the Gulf War and Other Battles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jarhead_%28book%29), starring Jake Gyllenhaal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jake_Gyllenhaal) as Swofford. The title comes from the slang (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slang) term used to refer to Marines (sometimes by Marines themselves). The film was directed by Academy Award (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Awards) winner Sam Mendes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Mendes), most famous for his 1999 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1999_in_film) film American Beauty (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Beauty_%281999_film%29).

TEAM Wishwedidaporndraft would like to select into the Documentary/non-fiction category, the winner of 11 Academy Awards(including Best Picture) and the highest grossing movie of all time, James Cameron's epic, TITANIC.
http://www.biggest-selling-movies.com/images/titanic.jpg
What can be said about film like this. Titanic was a massive achievement. Grossing more than 1.8 BILLION dollars worldwide. It set the mark for big budget movies by having a movie on a grand scale and also taking home 11 Academy Awards in almost every single category.
Everyone knows the story, so there's no point going into a long essay length synopsis of the movie. But at it's very root, TITANIC is truly a remarkable and tragic story and Cameron does a magnificent job with it.

Well there you go......we just traded movies that don't make sense to the other cuz seriously Titanic was just not a movie I found had many redeeming qualities to it....save perhaps that the ship did sink. ;)
But clearly a prime example of the category if nothing else VanFlames, kudos on the choice.

Isn't this stretching the non-fiction category by quite a lot? I can understand United 93 and Apollo 13, as these movies are based not only around historic events and historic characters, but also strive as much as possible to give an accurate account of the events. But Titanic is, at it's core, a completely ficticious love story around two completely ficticious characters, set in a historic setting amongst a cast of largely fictional characters with a few accurate historical characters thrown in. If we allow this to pass as non-fiction, we'd have to allow any film in a historical setting to pass as non-fiction, regardless of how much of the story is fictional.

Im inclined to agree with octothorp here
Titanic is a fictional story that takes place during a real event and makes mention of some real people. But largely, the main characters are fictional, the story is fictional, even the catalyst for the story (the necklace) is fictional
so if Titanic stands as non-fiction...
(and I say this all because I really dont expect anyone to select this flaming turd :poo:, and if you do, and I give your pick away, Im sorry)
then I could argue "Sudden Death" as non fiction; in that its a fictional story that occurs within a real surrounding (mellon arena), with real people (i.e Lucky Luc and Mike Lange) at a real event (SCF hockey game although, if i recall correctly its game 7 of the SCF pittsburgh vs chicago...completely fictional, as pittsburgh swept the series)
anywho im rambling now, and everything Ive typed is completely ridiculous which oddly enough is about how i feel about titanic being "non-fiction"
sorry VFF, but it had to be done

For my next pick, Team Hot Buttery Topping chooses, in the Musical category, my second film directed by Meat Head and third film directed by a 1970s sitcom star, Rob Reiner's comedy classic, and the film that launched a thousand mockumentary ships for Christopher Guest...This Is Spinal Tap!
http://thecia.com.au/reviews/t/images/this-is-spinal-tap-poster-0.jpg
This Is Spinal Tap was Rob Reiner's directorial debut and is a brilliantly funny look at the craziness of the Rock 'n' Roll world through a mock-rockumentary following the "once great" British rockers Spinal Tap on their American comeback tour. As outrageous as the whole movie seems, many real rockers have claimed to have experienced situations very similar to the events in the movie. Eddie Van Halen and Steven Tyler both failed to see the humour in the movie because it hit too close to home, and numerous rockers claim to have found themselves lost in the bowels of a venue, unable to find the stage.
Metallica's 1991 "Black Album" was also a tribute to the revised cover for "Smell the Glove" that is seen in the movie.

Yeah, I love this one. I had it pegged for a later round but suspected it wouldn't still be around. So many great lines.
How much more black could this be? The answer is none. None more black.
The MacGuffins are proud to select, with the 184st pick in the 7th round, for entry in the Thriller category:
No Country For Old Men
I always knew you had to be willing to die to even do this job. But, I don't want to push my chips forward and go out and meet something I don't understand. A man would have to put his soul at hazard. He'd have to say, "OK, I'll be part of this world."
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y28/djroach/no-country-for-old-men.jpg
IMO, this is the best film of the decade. I saw it 4 times in its first two weeks in the theatres, mainly because it kept calling me back, urging me to dismantle it and piece it back together. I found that it could be appreciated on so many levels, and that every time I saw it I could focus on something different and explore that area of the film. The more I put in the more I got out, and for that reason alone, this is one of my desert island picks. So few films approach viewers in this manner- for all the bloodshed and cat-and-mouse action there is so much subtext lurking there for active viewers that I simply cannot wait to see the film again every time I think about it.
With that said, I'm going to take a different approach to this writeup and simply list in point form things I liked about the film, or reasons why I think it's such a work of art. Maybe even some explanations and analysis also. Might be a little easier to digest that way, and I have a feeling it would be pages long otherwise. Some spoilers abound. Beware.
There is almost no music in the film. The lack of a score to accompany the action onscreen seems to heighten the tension in many scenes, and contributes to the lonely, alienating atmosphere throughout the film.
With no music, there is an extraordinary emphasis placed on the sound design, which is incredible. Consider the scene where Chigurh is tracking the briefcase to the motel where Moss is hiding out- the viewers are almost made hyper-aware of the beeping of the tracking device. A beeping that has never sounded so ominous.
The film is not about a psycho killer and his attempt to track down a fugitive. And it is not about that man on the run and his attempts to shed those in pursuit of him. Mistakenly, so many people dissatisfied with this film have focused their energy on those two characters, whose character arcs seem rather unfulfilled if that's the approach chosen. NCFOM is much more than that. Read on.
Chigurh represents an unstoppable evil; a force that cannot be restrained. Nothing, not even a compund fracture, will slow him down. Sheriff Bell, over the course of the film, realizes this, and decides that it's best for an old man to simply turn his back on that evil and let it run its course. Let the young whippersnappers try to tame it. Like his father's former colleague says to him: “What you got ain’t new. Can’t stop what’s coming. Ain’t all waiting on you. That’s vanity.”
In choosing to not show the (presumably) climactic scene where Moss is gunned down, the Coens further illustrate that Moss's fate is essentially meaningless to the story, and that the briefcase full of money is nothing more than a MacGuffin. They are not interested in the outcome of that storyline, but rather in the motivations of the characters and what that might represent.
All that said, the film is deliberately left somewhat open-ended and eager for personal interpretation. Like I said above, it rewards an active viewing experience, and there are no right or wrong "readings" of the film.
The cinematography sets a new standard IMO. Desolate, empty landscapes have never looked this beautiful. So many breathtaking shots- the lifeless boot under the shade tree, the dog chase in the canyon, the empty street at night during the shotgun blast sequence between Chigurh and Moss.
Even though the chase sequences and "tracking down the fugitives" aspect of the film aren't especially important in relation to the themes suggested, they are so well constructed and thrilling they are worthy of distinction.
Chigurh's very name (what kind of word is that? It's more of a "sound" or combination of letters), the manner in which he kills his victims (the cold efficiency of the cattle gun), his wacky haircut, accent, and dress, and his penchant for tossing coins all symbolize what his character stands for perectly- fate is unstoppable, unconventional, unpredictable. And that is exactly what he represents.
Sheriff Ed Tom is playing catch up the whole picture. Some have argues that if the movie is supposed to be best absorbed from his point of view, that he didn't have enough screen time and character development for that to have any resonance. I disagree. He's a step behind the entire way, and is given just enough screen time to show that. His lengthy scenes come towards the end of the picture when he's trying to make sense of it all and concludes that his time has passed.
While some will view that ending as nihilistic and depressing, one could argue that it's uplifting and full of self-realization. Evil and the destruction that comes along with it has always been around, so when Bell makes the decision to turn his back and wave the white flag, one presumes he will be able to turn his attnetion to his wife and ranch after a lifetime of servitude to society that went pretty much unnoticed. Perhaps he'll find happiness there.
Another way to interpret the ending is that Ed Tom, when explaining his dreams in the film's final scene, describes his father (who Ed Tom has outlived by 20 years, and is thus a "younger"man) marching on ahead in the cold and darkness to prepare a fire. That could symbolize that regardless of all the evil in the world, if you're not able to imagine forging ahead in the face of the bleak future and lighting a fire, what have you got? Even when you "wake up?"
What happened in the motel scene at the end where Ed Tom approaches the scene of the crime and Chigurh appears to be inside? Was Chigurh really in there? Was it all in Ed Tom's head? Did Chigurh escape into the shadows? Again, by not fully fleshing this out and forcing the viewer to determine what happened, the Coens have made a brave choice, and one that I applaud. It only reinforces Chigurh's presence as a "ghostly" figure, and one that cannot be restrained. That was, in many ways, Ed Tom's moment of clarity, his "coin toss" with Chigurh, and he's packing it in.
The Coens have a knack for startling images, and for presenting them in eye-popping ways. Consider the camera slowly panning over the scuff marks at the first movie scene, or the way a second truck appears at the top of the hillcrest while Moss is back investigating the carnage below. Or the deliberate manner in which Chigurh checks the soles of his shoes, or the beads of condensation on the milk bottle. All carefully manipulated pieces of filmmaking of the highest artistic merit.
Bardem's performance is legendary. Really not a lot else to say about it.
Whether you approach this film stylistically or symbolically doesn't matter. Both form and content are exceptional. It is, however, the intertwining of these factions that lifts the film to stratospheric heights- so few films achieve this that it's a privilege to find one that is enhanced when style and content are mixed together into something completely different, and not just meant to be appreciated separately.
The scene pictured below. Maybe my favorite movie scene of all time. The dialogue is pitch perfect, the performances just the same, and the tension is bursting at the seams. I love it!http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y28/djroach/cointoss.jpg

Taxi Driver was reportedly part of a delusional fantasy on the part of John Hinckley, Jr. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Hinckley,_Jr.)[20] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taxi_Driver#cite_note-19)[21] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taxi_Driver#cite_note-20) which triggered his attempted assassination (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reagan_assassination_attempt) of President Ronald Reagan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronald_Reagan) in 1981 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1981), an act for which he was found not guilty by reason of insanity (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insanity_defense).[22] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taxi_Driver#cite_note-21)[23] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taxi_Driver#cite_note-22) His stated reason was that the act was an attempt to impress Jodie Foster (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jodie_Foster) by mimicking Travis' mohawked appearance at the Palantine rally. The movie was so influential that his attorney concluded his defense by playing the movie.

This intense character study remains one of the most unforgettable movies I have ever seen. Although it lost out to the popular, feel-good choice of "Rocky" for the Best Picture Oscar that year, it has arguably become the more well-respected movie with time.

Nice pick Matty^^^^.
Of the three films, this one is my favorite. The Battle At Helm's Deep sequence is epic in scope and truly awesome entertainment.
