Missing the channel guide is actually a good thing. It means you are running on an all-digital signal. It's not a fault of the box... it just means all the lower channels are not analog anymore. However, you need the all-digital boxes to receive it (such as the $50 DCT700 I believe it is).

Not to derail this timely post too much but besides buying an HD Box from shaw at regular price ($450 or so?) are there any leads out there for cheaper boxes?
I don't imagine that these go on sale do they?

A digital Shaw box? not much at all really. It doesn't matter what TV it's being used on, you should want a Shaw HD Box.

hmm im gonna have to go ahead and question your logic. of course HD channels will look great on HD tv's but i have to thing a digital, as opposed to analog signal, will make regular tv look better on a widescreen tv

The digital box on my HDTV made most channels look crappier than my regular tv on a digital box.
If you have HDTV, the only way to go is HD receiver.

It depends, of course there will be some improvement but it doesn't matter that you have a widescreen hdtv.. it could be any TV.

This thread makes me wonder how many people have HDTV's and only use a Shaw Digital box and think they're actually watching HDTV. lol

I got a digital box, which made my 20 year old 27 in. tv look pretty good. Then I got a HDTV when Dell had them on sale. It looked like crap, especially hockey and football, where there was constant movement. Got the HD box and things were 100% better, on all channels.
Just as a side note, shaw said they would give me $50 trade in for my practically new $400 digital pvr.

I wonder too how many people are watching hdtv's through a digital box.

Just as an FYI, Soundsaround has a 1 page ad in the Herald today listing the Shaw HD box <no pvr> for $379. Take the ad to Bestbuy and you can get everything all in for under $400.

The Shaw PVR version is about $50 off I think.

I believe that it is today only.

I don't have an HDTV but the picture often looks overall crappy on my 27" flat CRT. I wouldn't recommend those boxes unless cost is an issue.
