Don't install the latest patch!

It also has an unfortunate bug: the incredibly stupid choice of boot.ini as a game configuration file, coupled with an errant extra backslash in the installer configuration. The result is that anyone who installs the enhanced graphics patch overwrites the windows XP c:\boot.ini file with the EVE client configuration file, bricking the machine on the next boot.

No OS should be allowing anyone access to write into that file. And the EVE programmers should have paid some attention to the QA part of their development process. People moan about Vista's UAC, but this highlights the need for something like this.

That sounds like a terrible programming choice, but I've never heard of a game (or any program for that matter) that installs directly to c:\ Oh the article says that the installer has an errant backslash. Meh, overwriting your boot.ini file isn't the end of the world, all you need to do is start with your WinXP disc and tell it to repair the OS. No data loss, only a little mild frustration. And really anyone who isn't up for some mild frustration shouldn't be playing EVEonline anyways.

That's really funny, and rather true. Heh.

For most people though, having this happen would be equivalent to destroying all data on their system. Or it would cost them 150$ to get it fixed.

My beef with Windows developers continues...

Wow. Someone will lose their job over that error, I bet.
