I know he is an UFA and the Flames no longer have any rights to him but I thought it was an interesting post by snoil11 on HF.

Regehr 2.0 is leading all defencemen in scoring in the DEL and last night broke a DEL record by scoring 5 goals in one game!

Glad to see he is doing well on the other side of the pond.

Wow. I hope he can make an NHL career for himself yet.

Five goals in a game at any level is nothing to sneeze at, but let's be honest here, the German League is a ways down in terms of even the Swedish Elite or Russian Super League.

Good for him, I wish him all the best. Maybe he'll make a Cory Murphy like appearance in the NHL when he's 28??

That says more about the league then it does about Regehr.

Perhaps, but it is probably a great place for a guy who has missed a lot of time with injury issues to get his game together. As long as he uses this as a stepping stone to more competitive play, this is a great step for him.

Haven't seen you score 5 goals in a professional hockey league game. :D

So, lets say someone signs him to a NHL contract right now, does Regehr 2.0 have to first clear waivers?

How many games have you actually watched in these three leagues? The hype that the SEL gets is unbelievable.

Nope, UFA.

Gio and Taratukhin, I believe, are still property of the Flames.

Admittedly not many, none of the German league, I am going completely on what I have heard, not always the best source, but it is a general consensus that Super League is #1 in Europe and the SEL is #2. If you know or think differently, enlighten us.

^ it's a reasonable assumption that the better hockey nations (Russia and Sweden, relative to Germany) would have better domestic players and therefore higher quality league play

Although possible, I thought that it would waive the ability of the player to participate in the season this year? I think that signing with a separate league at this time means you are giving up on playing in the NHL.

There was mention of something like this, as to the reason why Forsberg is not playing with a SEL team, as it would negate his ability to sign with a team in the NHL this season.

There's also the December drop dead date to consider as well.

Not really. :)
You have to take into account how many of their best players are actually playing back at home. There is also the issue of import players (mainly North American) and how many are allowed to play in the league. The DEL teams still have up to 11 import players on their rosters.
Otherwise you would have to argue that the Czech Eliteleague is one of the best in the world (the Czechs are still one of the best hockey nations) and I doubt anyone would say this.
It's difficult to compare different leagues. For example the Swiss league NLA is widely regarded as one of the top leagues in Europe but the Austrian Champion beat 4 different top NLA teams this season and I don't think anyone would claim that the Austrian league is better than the Swiss league.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the Flames doctors come out with a different conclusion than the German doctors in regards to post-concussion syndrome?

Not really looking to cast any negative light here, and I'm reasonably assured Richie wouldn't take any unnecessary risks all the same.

Actually quite a Richie Regehr fan. Had things transpired differently, he'd have been firmly in the mix. T'was not to be though.

That only applies to restricted free agents who were given qualifying offers. Regehr did not get a QO, and hence is UFA. But I think he would have to clear waivers if he was to sign with an NHL team since he has a contract in Europe right now. Randy Robitaille had to clear waivers before the Sens could use him after signing him. I think the Oilers avoided bringing Grebeshkov in last year for this reason too.

What the hell bring back Richie and negotiate for his German team to get Ericksson and pay him Regehr's salary with the Flames on the hook for the difference next season.

I would love it if he could resume his NHL career, but if can't, a decent career in the German league is nothing to be ashamed of.

Until his concussion, I actually thought he had more upside than Giordano.
