If you'll humor me, I had a pseudo-journal like thread the past two seasons covering the Las Vegas Wranglers and I'd like to start one for this season. By all means, chip in at your leisure.
Two things to say from the start:
1.) We signed Peter and Chris Ferraro today. A little fringe NHL experience to add to the team.
2.) Training camp starts tomorrow. Now I'm completely under the weather. Snot....sneezing....coughing....fever.....dizzy... ..sometimes cold chills.....but in the event that I'm functioning enough, I'll hop in the car and drive down to the rink and take a peak. Unfortunately, I don't have a digital camera which sucks because I'd love to provide some visual evidence.
LET'S GO WRANGLERS!

They're Las Vegas property and have nothing to do with either the QC or Calgary Flames.

I've been a fan of a AA team with affliates before. They are first place the AAA team goes looking for a call up, whether the guy is under a two-way or not ... Ferraro has shown that he doesn't stick around long in the ECHL either.
Don't harsh my buzz :p

There's really no pattern when it comes to players signed to AHL Professional Tryouts. They can come from any ECHL (the most likely source) team.

We've had two good Q-goalies pass through Vegas, Sebastien Centomo and Dany Sabourin. Centomo was one of my favorite players while he was here but sadly he'll be suiting up for our division rivals, the Fresno Falcons (San Jose Sharks affiliate).
I can't find it anymore, but there used to be a video clip on the internet of Centomo in a goalie fight while he was with us. I think it was against Davis Parley, but I could be wrong, but it was definately in Bakersfield. Centomo threw the first punch and knocked out the other goalie cold, one shot, reminiscent Jesse Boulerice and Aaron Downey.

Some minor transaction news....added two try outs to the training camp squad:
German goalie Jan Muenster
http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php3?pid=51344
And goalie Stephan Siwiec, who played for Boston University in college and the Colorado Eagles of the CHL.
While I have a feeling the organization has very clear plans in net for Las Vegas, it certainly appears VERY foggy to us mere fans right now. Going into camp, Mike McKenna was the only netminder on the roster and we're 100% certain he will leave us for the AHL sooner than later.
edit....and for the record, Stephan Siwiec was born in Calgary.

Really? I read somewhere that he's got an ECHL-only contract with the Wranglers. St. Louis is pretty deep in goal, but I'd think McKenna would be good enough to be in Alaska if he belongs to the Blues.

Ah, didn't know that. Kind of a bummer, he's a St. Louis native so I'm sure he was really excited by the prospect of playing in their organization.
but I'd think McKenna would be good enough to be in Alaska if he belongs to the Blues.
The ECHL has a wierd free agency policy. Players can only be signed to the current year, or rather they can't be signed to multi-year contracts....but in the off season, all teams can produce a "protected list" or players they want to reserve for next year, basically they can decide who is restricted free agent. We did that with McKenna, he was popular here, he liked playing for us, so even if he signed with the Blues, he'd HAVE to play for us since he was on our off season reserved list (and then subsequently signed a contract with us for this season).
In theory, we could have traded those rights to anyone including Alaska, he could have refused to sign, etc. But he was a restricted free agent and pretty much was reserved to Las Vegas for this season. If he gets sent down, it has to be to us unless we trade his rights.

Minor transaction news, LW Arpad Mihaly has gone to Italy and so the Wranglers have "suspended" him. Harsh as that term may be, it really just is a form of reserving the rights to a player who's unavailable to play.

Heh....he's really too good for the ECHL but evidently not good enough for the AHL and so consequently has bounced up and down quite a bit. Chipped in for 10 goals for us last year.
The ECHL has age limitations....they tweak the details every season, but the last I checked, no team can have more than four "veterans", and a veteran was defined as any player with 260+ games of professional experience (although goalies are now an exception to the rule). The Ferraro twins make two...Shawn Limpright's probably has 260+....Jason Jozsa MIGHT....If Mike McBain comes back, he definately is.....and if there's no interested parties for Mihaly in the AHL, there's just no room in Vegas....

I'm still sick as a dog and rolling around in bed with a fever, but I've found enough strength to hop on the computer for a second and tune into the season opener. We're about 18 minutes into the first period, 2-1 Bakersfield Condors lead. Bakersfield is an independent team in terms of affiliations, but they've gotten a little help from the Los Angeles Kings (who really are affiliated with Reading).
Just as I'm typing: GOOOOOOOAL!!!!!!! PETER FERRARO!!!!!
Matt Beaudoin has our other goal. Not sure who's in net for us, but it's probably McKenna. Yutaka Fukafuji in net for the Condors.
I'm probably just going to turn in for the night, but I promise for future games to give more detailed and interesting accounts.

Also, as you can see by our goalie that we picked up a new...goalie. John Curry is actually assigned, strangely enough, by the Pittsburgh Penguins. He's a rookie out of Boston University. Had some great numbers last year in college with a 2.01 GAA, .928% with 7 shutouts. We also have new uniforms which look like Canadian junior unis if you ask me.

PRE-GAME
edit....There are three sets of brothers playing in tonight's game. For Victoria, Jordan and Derek Krestanovich along with Wes and Ash Goldie....of course, Chris and Peter Ferraro are dressed for us.
FIRST PERIOD
edit....and we're underway....
edit....15:00 left, scoreless.....Vegas with the early lead on shots, 5-1, but it sounds like the lone Kings shot was a nice one with a big gasp from the crowd....most of the action is in the Kings end....
edit....14:00 left, scoreless....Ryan Wade heading to the box, not sure what the call is, but Wranglers are on the power play....Madill, Burke, Czuy, Mullherin are out there for us, not sure the fifth player....Madill with a wild shot from the blueline, no threat to Kings goalie and ex-Binghamton Senator Billy Thompson....penalty killed off, dang...
edit....12:00 left, scoreless....Adam Cracknell with a high hit, he's getting two....Kings peppering Curry with big bombs from outside, Seitsonen clearing...successfully killed....
edit....11:00 left, scoreless....Curry with a big double save after a turnover at the blueline!!!....Madill the other way, apparently loves to shoot often from way out, pad save from Thompson....one of our boys just got wrecked in a hit, I think Czuy....
edit....5:00 left, scoreless....Mulherin spending a lot of productive time in the opposing crease....great blue collar work!!
edit....4:00 left, VICTORIA SCORES, 1-0....ex-Calgary Hitman Dylan Yeo's first professional goal puts the Kings on top first....
edit...1:00 left, 1-0 Victoria....ex-Kelowna Rocket Kiel McLeod has been a monster for Victoria, throwing the body around all period long....I think he's the one that leveled Czuy earlier...
edit....end of 1st, 1-0 Victoria....10 shots apiece, but Victoria definately feeling better about that period than we are...Aki Seitsonen led the period with 4 shots on goal for us...
FIRST INTERMISSION, 1-0 Victoria
edit...interview with Kings Head Coach Mark Morrison...heavily paraphrased: lots of parity this year in the conference, even previously lousy teams (including Victoria and Phoenix) are now tough teams yet the previously good teams have lost nothing.....Vegas is a fast team, well coached, and has depth to the point that losing players doesn't affect on ice performance....recruiting is harder than you'd think for Victoria because a lot of BC guys want to get new experience rather than stay home and the Kings have to shake off the stigma of being a losing team...
SECOND PERIOD
edit....1-0, Victoria.....and we're underway....Yeo takes a slapshot off the shins....he's functioning but not feeling well....Donati working hard on the forecheck....
edit....17:00 left, 1-0 Victoria....Kings d-man Paul Ballantyne leaves the bench for the locker room....evidently injured tonight, he did break his leg a year or two ago....
edit...14:00 left, 1-0 Victoria....our notoriously unfair play by play man describes the Victoria crowd as "tame and quiet"....
edit...10:00 left...1-0 Victoria....Peter Ferraro forces a highlight reel save from Thompson!....Ryan Donnaly gets a roughing call and an unsportsmanlike...Ty Morris goes for Victoria, but that puts us shorthanded....Czuy goes long shorthanded but Thompson stops the attempt...
edit...8:00 left, 1-0 Victoria....WRANGLERS SCORE!!!!!!!...PETER FERRARO!!!!!!....Brother Chris and Mulherin with the assists!....
edit....7:00 left, 1-1 game....looks like we're going on a powerplay....Aki Seitsonen was getting beat up in the corner and so the offending Kings player gets a roughing...our play by play man notes that Curry is not much for playing the puck, he doesn't really leave the crease...
edit....6:00 left, 1-1 game....our power play looks terribly ineffective, most of the time spent looking for the puck in our own end....aaaand, VICTORIA SCORES A SHORT HANDER......
edit....end of period, 2-1 Victoria...11-8 shots on goal for that period in favor of Las Vegas, 21-18 for us on the game...
SECOND INTERMISSION, 2-1 Victoria
edit....interview with Wranglers C Tyler Mosienko is the interview...paraphrased: says he's glad McKenna's not around as they're going into Canada because McKenna was a big pro-American and Tyler's big pro-Canadian and they always argued about the differences between the countries when visiting Victoria....thinks Vegas is tough this year....feels he has a slow start personally, but the team is playing so well that it doesn't matter so far....chemistry can be a problem on the team with so many new people and lots of linemate tinkering by the coach, but the feeling is that everyone is interchangably good as far as talent goes....likes that Canadian tv sports is all hockey all the time....CFL has bigger end zones because there's just a lot of real estate in Canada for the room....
THIRD PERIOD
edit...2-1, Victoria....for the record, it was Madill that got burned on that short handed goal at the end of the previous period.....aaaand we're just about underway....
edit...15:00 left, 2-1 Victoria....if you count our torrid finish from last season, then we have a 17 game regular season winning streak on the line tonight....
edit...14:00 left, 2-1 Victoria....WES GOLDIE WITH A MONSTEROUS SHOT OFF THE FACEOFF, VICTORIA SCORES.....3-1 Kings....
edit...12:00 left, 3-1 Victoria....Donnally hanging out in front of the net, gets jumped by a Kings player, and then gets a cross checking penalty for it...Victoria power play....
edit....10:00 left, 3-1 Victoria...Donnally hops out of the box for a breakaway but cracks one wide of the net....
edit...9:00 left, 3-1 Victoria...Jason Dest, about to be hit by Kiel McLeod, accidentally high sticks McLeod when putting his hands up to brace himself for the hit....there's blood....this is a double minor...
edit...8:00 left, 3-1 Victoria....delayed tripping call....VICTORIA POWER PLAY GOAL, WES GOLDIE WITH A HAT TRICK...Ryan Donnally is still going to the box for tripping...5-on-3 for two minutes....
edit...4:00 left, 4-1 Victoria....gotta hand it to Kings goalie Billy Thompson, he has been very sharp tonight....we've had our shots on net, 32 so far...
edit...3:00 left, 4-1 Victoria....BRANDON KALENIECKI PULLS ONE BACK, WRANGLERS GOAL!!!!!....
edit...2:00 left, 4-2 Victoria....McLeod with a nasty charge on Madill, Vegas will have a power play down the final moments of the game...ADAM CRACKNELL SMACKS ONE HOME!!!! POWER PLAY GOAL WRANGLERS!!!!!!....
edit...1:00 left, 4-3 Victoria....Curry is pulled....
edit...FINAL: 4-3 Victoria, our play by play guy says this is the first time the Wranglers have lost in regulation since March 10th, 2006....I assume he means 2007, but he might not, we've been a wrecking ball for a long, long time...edit....nope, it's March 10th, 2006 the last day we've lost in regulation in a regular season game....

Some transaction news....D Sean Owens and LW Shawn Limpright hopped onto the IR and D Aaron Power came off.
We host the Utah Grizzlies for two games. Tomorrow (Friday, November 2nd) and Saturday, the 3rd. Grrr! :chair:
One of my favorite games to see in person during a regular season was against the Grizzlies. We had some loud mouth Utah fans behind us and Utah put up a 5-0 score on us going into the third period.* ENORMOUS trash talking from said fans. And to watch them squirm in their seat and sink deeper and deeper as we put up 1 goal....2 goals....3 goals....4 goals....FIVE goals in the third period to take it to overtime. That we actually lost in OT seemed insignificant (hey, 1 point) as we got to watch the hecklers be humbled quite a bit.
*my memory may exaggerate a little, but not intentionally

edit....I don't want to be a snot, but I can't believe we've lost two in a row. We've grown spoiled on regular season dominance for so long, two losses back to back is intolerable. Shabby goaltending from us and even shabbier penalty killing was it. Chippy game, lots of action, we had 44 shots on goal and even had a penalty shot tally from Mosienko. Oh well. Saturday night is the rematch.

FIRST PERIOD
edit....12:00 left, scoreless....I joined in late to listen to this game...a huge fight breaking out in the process. Chris Ferraro has been ejected for having his jersey come undone during a fight....17 penalty minutes for him! Tim Boron is our only goalie, so I guess Curry is probably off to Germany....we're on the powerplay after a tripping call on the Grizzlies...
edit.....10:00 left, scoreless....Peter Ferraro to the box....hey, a name I don't recognize, C Curtis Fraser.....announcers are singing his praises as a big guy who apparently is hustling hard and playing well tonight thus far...Announcers feeling bad for Tim Boron, sitting on the bench for so long and then being thrown into last night's firestorm mercilessly....Boron was the backup goalie to the CHL Champion Colorado Eagles last season and he did have a 7-game winning streak in December of '06....
edit....8:00 left...scoreless.....WRANGLERS GOOOOOALLLL!!!!! RYAN DONALLY!!!!!!....Fraser and Donally with a 2-on-1 with Grizzlies goalie Brett Jaeger....Jaeger played for the pass to Fraser, Donally kept it and stuffed it home!!! 1-0!!!....Insult to injury, a penalty to Utah not 10 seconds after the ensuing faceoff...
edit....7:00 left, 1-0 Vegas.....BRANDON KALENIECKI!!!!!! BACK DOOR STUFF, POWER PLAY GOOOOOALLL!!!!!!.....Adam Cracknell with a BEAUTIFUL assist!....and the Wranglers go back on the power play immediately after the faceoff again!!!
edit...5:00 left, 2-0 Vegas...11-4 shots on goal for us....Fraser has been a revelation so far....
edit...2:00 left, 2-0 Vegas....Donati with a hooking call....knock on wood, penalty isn't over, but it looks like our penalty kill is better than last night...
edit....end of period, 2-0 Vegas....Seitsonen ends the period with a big check....
SECOND PERIOD
edit....2-0 Vegas....aaand we're underway....
edit....18:00 left, 2-0 Vegas...Vegas gets a power play...WRANGLERS GOAL!!!!!!!! POWER PLAY!!!!!!....Peluso with the shot, Mosienko might have tipped it!....oh, and Curry was re-called to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the A. Mike Katz will be our EBUG, but he's not listed as playing tonight...Bruce Mulherin went on the 3-day IR....
edit...15:00 left, 3-0 Vegas...a couple of fights broke out....Fraser and Donally are the Wranglers dropping the gloves...Utah player messing with Peter Ferraro and Donally stepped in for his teamate....we get a power play out of this....
edit....10:00 left, 3-0 Vegas...Kaleniecki with a comical tripping call, we're killing a penalty....Aaron Power commits a penalty immediately into it with an interference or something of that sort...5-on-3 for nearly 2 minutes...
edit...7:00 left, 3-0 Vegas....power play to us....hate to be cocky, hate to show hubrus, but tonight feels like a walk in the park....
edit...3:00 left, 3-0 Vegas....our announcers are furious...as Utah commits icing and their tired players have to stay on the ice, the announcers watch Utah goalie Jaeger untie his goalie pads and then skate to the refs to tell them he has an equipment issue that needs to be resolved, giving his teamates time for a breather....
edit...2:00 left, 3-0 Vegas.....WRANGLERS GOOOOOAL!!!!!! PETER FERRARO WITH A SCREEN, KRISCHUK WITH A SLAPSHOT OVER JAEGER'S SHOULDER!!!!......4-0!!!
edit...end of period, 4-0 Vegas....our power play is working, our penalty kill is working, we're testing their goalkeeper, they ain't testing ours....walk in the park, a walk in the park....
THIRD PERIOD
edit...18:00 left, 4-0 Vegas.....Utah scores, but I feel enough hubrus to mail this one in....I won't be listening in and updating play by play, but rather coming back to check on things....

Seitsonen has been playing, although not really registering on much in the way of stats (if you look in my faux box scores, he seems to always be listed under "Other Players Dressed"). However, he seems to be throwing the body around and playing well.
Cracknell's definately red hot right now. He's on a four game scoring streak. Players who have consistently performed at this level have taken time to adjust up there, but at the end of the day, he's probably better than the last two players we've sent up the pipeline (Hambly and Pardy).

We officially have a new number 1 goalie. His name is Daniel Manzato, he's from Switzerland, and he's property of the Carolina Hurricanes. He played for Victoriaville in the Q before putting up 4 reasonably good seasons in the Swiss league. He's got 2 games under his belt in the ECHL this year already for the Charlotte Checkers, going 2-0, 2.00 GAA, with a .947%.
Our next game is on Saturday at Phoenix.

FIRST PERIOD
edit...0-0, 20:00 left...the Ferraro brothers have been split up to two different lines...Madill and Dest are scratches....It's Daniel Manzato's Wranglers debut!...
edit...0-0, 12:00 left...very uneventful game, neither team can break into the opponent's zone, lots of turnovers....no penalties...2 shots for Phoenix, 1 for us so far...
edit...0-0, 8:00 left....Phoenix with a penalty, not sure what the call is, but here we go...ADAM CRACKNELL!!!!! OFF THE FACE OFF, SLAPSHOT!!!!....that power player didn't last one two seconds, the tally comes off the faceoff immediately after the call....Donati won the faceoff for the assist....
edit...1-0, Las Vegas, 5:00 left....Donati took a stick to the face, that's a penalty!...aaand, nuthin' doin' on that power play...
edit...1-0, Las Vegas, 2:00 left....BRUCE MULHERIN!!!!!!!.....That's his 6th and yet another one sitting in front of the net, this guy is a mucker!!!....2-0, Las Vegas!...
edit...2-0, Las Vegas, 1:00 left....Tyson Strachan with a vicious cross check, threw a Roadrunner into the boards and we have a late penalty....and this penalty will be broken up by the first intermission.
FIRST INTERMISSION
D Mike Madill interview...heavily paraphrased: nice weather in Phoenix compared to Montreal...deflects praise for his previously awesome record against Phoenix, says he tries his best....calls former college teamate G Mike McKenna a fun experience to play with, St. Lawrence College was an awesome experience....although Canadian, ended up going to prep school in the States and playing college hockey seemed like the logical choice.....his twin brother is getting a Master's degree and playing Canadian college hockey, winning a championship last year....doesn't look anything like his twin....Mike McKenna somewhat of a help in recruiting Madill to the Wranglers....recalls his rookie season for the Texas Wildcatters was a blast, great team that fell in the first round last year....won a bunch of awards, All ECHL, All Rookie team, etc....Wranglers dressing room great, everyone is tight nit, good work ethic, aspire to great things this year....
SECOND PERIOD
edit....20:00, 2-0 Las Vegas....aaaand here we go, Vegas killing the remnants of a Roadrunner power play....Seitsonen, interestingly enough, takes the opening face off....it should be noticed that Phoenix so far this year gets better as the game gets going, slow starters, strong finishers, with a 20-10 third period goal record....penalty killed...
edit...15:00, 2-0 Las Vegas....SLAPSHOT FROM THE BLUE LINE AFTER A FACE OFF WIN FOR PHOENIX, 2-1 VEGAS......Momentum turning towards Phoenix....
edit...14:00, 2-1 Las Vegas....Peter Ferraro gets a double minor after a blood inducing cross check/high stick....
edit...11:00, 2-1 Las Vegas....and that double minor is canceled out with a Roadrunners penalty....4-on-4 for now and about 25 seconds of power play for us...big sequence of shots for us!!!!....nothing doing for scoring, but a real scare for Phoenix....
edit....10:00, 2-1 Las Vegas....well, there we go, Mulherin with a call, 4-on-3 power play for Phoenix for 9 seconds...
edit....9:00, 2-1 Las Vegas....call on Phoenix...you know, a supervisor of officials is in the house tonight and so I guess the zebras are trying to get their quota of calls in now...
edit....8:00, 2-1 Las Vegas....Peter Ferraro was held, that's a penalty!!!! We're going to have a 5-on-3 soon here...Getting a little chippy....Power dings one off the post!!!!! Dang!!!....Donally obviously baiting Roadrunners player Reagan Rome to fight....he's dumped Peter Ferraro and Tyler Mosienko after whistles recently....CHRIS FERRARO FROM PETER AND AARON POWER!!!!!!! 3-1 LAS VEGAS!!!!!...
edit...6:00, 3-1 Las Vegas...Mulherin going to the box....
edit...4:00, 3-1 Las Vegas....two on one!!! Cracknell and Fraser!....WRANGLERS GOALLLLL!!!!!!!! CRACKNELL USES FRASER AS A PASSING DECOY TAKES IT HIMSELF!!!!! Adam is RED HOT right now....He is ready for Quad Cities.....unassisted....and Roadrunners get a penalty right after the faceoff!
THIRD PERIOD
edit....19:00, 4-1 Las Vegas....and here we go....PHOENIX GOAL.....50% of all Roadrunner goals have come in the 3rd period, so we might have a storm to weather here....
edit...18:00, 4-2 Las Vegas....lots of chippiness...Roadrunner trying to induce Krischuk to fight, jabbing him with his stick a couple times....some matching minors coming out of this....actually, we may have a power play out of this?....mass confusion!....RYAN DONALLY!!!! POWER PLAY TALLY!!!!!....He gobbled up a rebound!!!....
edit...16:00, 5-2 Las Vegas....Donati to the box for hooking...Phoenix IMMEDIATELY picks up an unsportsmanlike on the faceoff...completely negates Phoenix's powerplay...in fact, it's a double minor? Four on four for two minutes and then a powerplay for us....nevermind, Krischuk gets 2 minutes for tripping a few seconds into the next play....
edit...12:00, 5-2 Las Vegas....complete confusion on the penalty situation as the Wranglers were shorthanded for awhile but just went on a power play without any players entering or leaving the penalty boxes....neither bench seems to be demanding explanation from the refs....and now we're 5 on 5 again...officiating supervisors in attendance have a lot to talk about tonight!...
edit...11:00, 5-2 Las Vegas....another penalty for Phoenix....we have no idea what's going on here...
edit...10:00, 5-2 Las Vegas...Donally dropped the gloves!!....Donally muscled his opponent briefly and then knocked him out, they're needing to wake up the Roadrunner....Donally was defending Peter Ferraro from harassment...Ryan needs an assist for the Gordie Howe....
edit....6:00, 5-2 Las Vegas...Gerry Burke drops the gloves and then drops his opponent....Burke is bleeding, though....Gerry got a clean cross through his opponent's jaw...
edit....5:00, 5-2 Las Vegas...BRANDON KALENIECKI!!!!!....HANGING OUT IN FRONT OF THE NET, 6-2 VEGAS!!!!......Donati with an assist, Cracknell may have yet another point on this one, too!...Roadrunners player jumping C Curtis Fraser from behind after the faceoff....Roadrunner dropped gloves, Fraser didn't, might be 2 minute power play for roughing....
edit...3:00, 6-2 Las Vegas....another cheap shot from a Roadrunner, this is now an issue of surviving the rest of the game from Phoenix' taking frustration out on us...another dirty hit into the boards, left the feet, no call on that one...no return of violence from us....
edit...1:00, 6-2 Las Vegas....26 shots on goal this single period is a franchise record...Fraser threatening with a good on himself...we have 58 shots on goal in total thus far...
edit...final, 6-2 Las Vegas...complete and utter domination...

Yeah, I can't say that I'm terribly familiar with the depth chart and needs of Quad Cities (really, I should be paying more attention around here), but I will say this: Adam Cracknell is our best player right now. He's red hot not just offensively, but he's starting to really throw the body around and suck up pucks defensively like a black hole. His game is well rounded, it seems.
If nothing else, I would suggest that Quad Cities fans feel secure that they have some good depth down the right wing in Cracknell.

I definitely feel better about having Cracknell down there if something happens here, or if there's a call-up to Calgary. I'm also impressed by Donally so far. Two goals, and four points, through eight games. Add that in with four fights and a KO, he's doing pretty well for a thumper.

No, Cracknell's been playing with Mosienko most of the time but I think he was paired up with Chris Ferraro last night. Believe it or not, Donati's the third line center, although Gulutzan seems to roll all four lines for equal time.

I'm probably going to be entertaining some guests tonight so updating the game might be tricky. I will say there are two other games of interest today. Bakersfield is up 3-1 in Elmira early in the third. We want Bakersfield to lose that one. The other two division rivals, the Stockton Thunder (Edmonton Oilers) and Fresno Falcons are playing each other in Stockton. They play in a few minutes and we probably want Fresno to win since Stockton is second place.

You'd think given the affiliation agreement, a spot for Lalande is prioritized.

Curry's already gone. He got called up to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton but has been playing in Germany for Team USA in the Deutschland Cup (Silver Medal finish, by the way).
There may be room. Tim Boron was signed as an Emergency Backup goalie and just simply got a full time contract when Curry was called up. He's probably more expendable than Manzato. Manzato is Carolina Hurricanes property, so he could always be called up at some point, too.

PRE-GAME
edit....Jozsa will be the first intermission interview, Donally the second intermission Q and A....our interviews are pre-recorded before the game, for the record...
FIRST PERIOD
edit....scoreless, 20:00 left....Condors commit a penalty almost immediately into the game, here we go!
edit...scoreless, 14:00 left....As far as the Condors and their fans are concerned, Ryan Donally just took a run at their goalie....and he's going to get a 5 minute major for goalie interference and a game misconduct....
edit...scoreless, 10:00 left....Condors goalie Yutaka Fukuji has to leave the game injured after 1 save....perennial west coast ECHLer Jamie Hodgson has to come in....I think he's played for every team in California...
edit....scoreless, 9:00 left....a quick hooking and delay of game by Bakersfield puts us up for a 5-on-3 for more than a minute, although the ref will probably give the Condors a makeup call and ruin it for us...MOSIENKO!!!!!! POWER PLAY GOAL PUTS US UP, 1-0!!!!!....there's still time on the second penalty, so we continue on the power play....
edit...1-0, Las Vegas, 4:00 left....Madill just got crushed....seems okay....
edit...1-0, Las Vegas, 1:00 left...Sean Owens to the box, let's kill this off!....
SECOND PERIOD
edit...1-0, Las Vegas, 16:00 left....BAKERSFIELD SCORES, Manzato had an 88 minute shutout streak up to that point....big rebound surrendered and the Condors pounced....
edit...1-1 tie, 14:00 left....some Condork took a run at Cracknell....seems like he's alright....
edit...1-1 tie, 13:00 left....Condors definately trying to injure out there, now Mulherin takes one high....maybe revenge for their goalie heading out of the game?...
edit...1-1 tie, 9:00 left....Strachan and Peter Ferraro are getting physical after the whistle with the Condors, things might get ugly here...Peter's going to the box for roughing....Gully is reportedly turning red with anger...
edit...1-1 tie, 5:00 left....CHRIIIIIIS FERRRRARO!!!!!!! ON THE POWER PLAY!!!!....so many penalty calls coming that I didn't feel obliged to mention this one, but so it is, a power play goal and a 2-1 lead for the Wranglers!...

At a time when we most need it due to call ups and injuries, I hear LW Shawn Limpright will be back very soon off of IR. He's a spark plug that's good for the Gordie Howe hat trick. LW Kelly Czuy and LW Marco Peluso are still injured but probably won't be back too soon.

Transaction wire is wacky today...the Wranglers suspended LW Arpad Mihaly and then unsuspended him but it's unclear which happened first given that he was under suspension when the day started.
I said it before, but a reminder: in the ECHL, a team given suspension is like putting someone on the injured reserve who isn't injured. It frees up a roster spot and that player basically is a restricted free agent within the narrow scope of the ECHL. You suspend players who have personal issues, or have chosen to play in Europe, or play in another lower AA-level minor league (like the CHL or the IHL, etc.). Mihaly is suspended so he doesn't count against the roster limitations but if he plays in the ECHL, he has to play for us. Of course, we can trade his rights or simply relinquish them, but the point is that suspending a player means more that you want to keep them than get rid of them, as far as the context of ECHL roster nuances go.
Also, G Daniel Manzato has a piece in the paper on him:

I'll get a good look tomorrow, but he's been on the last line so far this year. Chris Ferraro, Mosienko, and Fraser have all been higher in the depth charts, but will all the call ups and injuries this week, I'll see enough of him tomorrow to bring back an impression.
On the other hand, Gully likes to roll lines alot, being low on the depth chart doesn't mean less playing time here, really.
I'll say more tomorrow night.

edit....so we only had 13 skaters tonight and managed to easily destroy Phoenix. Not the toughest team in the league, but we were pretty clinical.
Since this is my first game to attend this season, an impression of each individual player:
G Kevin Lalande - Never really tested. A few confident glove snatches in the third but probably faced no more than 3 threatening shots as the defense in front of him was stifling. Every breakaway was broken up with pokechecks from defenders.
D Gerry Burke - Managed 5 shots on goal. Joined the rush, played the power play, made no mistakes whatsoever.
D Jason Jozsa - Played back....big guy, good skating ability for ECHL level, but wasn't especially ambitious with a short bench and long shift times. Managed 3 shots. Brilliant poke checks tonight, probably broke up 3-4 breakaways. Our best blueliner.
D Sean Owens - Big guy who doesn't throw his body around, but again, might be strategical choice with a short bench. Really played alot up front as a forward on the power play. Smothering defensively. Sometimes awkward when contesting a loose puck. Some average to bad shifts, but over the course of 60 minutes, as good as Jozsa.
D Jason Dest - Great positionally. Never really beaten. Didn't catch my attention so much other than I noticed lots of playing time--again, short bench!
D Tyson Strachan - I have a theory: he showed up late today. He didn't play a single shift, as far as I saw, in the first period. And yet he was out there constantly in the second. In fact, I think he was out there for the first six minutes in a row. The physical defenseman of the day.
D Aaron Power - On paper, I believe him to be the best d-man in Vegas, but he seemed really flat today. Awkward skating, beaten by some of the more ambitious Phoenix forwards. An off night.
LW Shawn Limpright - Wanted to fight, was ticking off opponents and was a general pest. Had one great breakaway but had a pretty tame shot on goal. Still, you can see the sparkplug nature in him and it's only a matter of time before he starts picking things up on the scoresheet.
LW Ryan Donally - Wow! Great night! Threw his body around like a madman, seemed to be everywhere all at once. Definately the player of the game. Two goals, big on the boards, big in front of the net. Physically imposing player!
C Tyler Mosienko - You can see the pedigree in Bill's grandson. His stickhandling is sublime, he cut through the Phoenix defense with ease. Keeps the puck on a string. Very physical, big on the boards. Amazing he was kept off the scoresheet.
C Chris Ferraro - Like Tyler, you can see that this guy is on another level than everyone else on the ice. Played a hard, honest game, and looked like a leader. Two assists.
RW Mike Madill - Great game...for someone listed as blueliner, he looked very, very comfortable handling the puck. Good speed at the ECHL level. Good game, lots of hustle.
RW Brandon Kaleniecki - Muscled out of most plays, good when cycling the puck. Managed a power play tally.
F Aki Seitsonen - Bad skating tonight. Seemed to hit all the ruts in the ice, never really imposed himself, was outhustled. The only player with a bona fide bad game. Little to contribute tonight. Not for a lack of trying, though. He just looked outclassed.

The ECHL has posted a story declaring our dominance.
http://www.echl.com/cgi-bin/mpublic.cgi?action=show_news&cat=1&id=12831
The first half of the article is the most interesting for me:
Las Vegas posted back-to-back home wins against Phoenix to extend its winning streak to eight games, tying the ECHL season best, and improve to 12-2-0 for a league-leading winning percentage of .857.
The Wranglers continue their six-game home stand hosting Bakersfield on Tuesday and Idaho on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Las Vegas has lost only twice in the last 27 regular season games, including winning the first four games of the season to extend their regular season winning streak to an ECHL record 17 games, surpassing the record of Louisiana (Nov. 23-Dec. 22, 2001) and Knoxville (Dec. 28, 1993-Jan. 29, 1994).
Las Vegas won the Brabham Cup for the regular season point championship with 106 points (53-13-6) in 2006-07 after finishing second in 2005-06 with 112 points (53-13-6) which is the third-highest point total in ECHL history.
The Wranglers lead the ECHL in goals scored with 4.00 per game and goals allowed with 2.07 per game while ranking third on the power play at 23.2 percent (23-for-99).
edit....oh, and also we signed G Mike Katz as an emergency backup keeper. He seems to be the career e-bug who pops up here and there. Our first e-bug, Tim Boron was waived by the team that acquired him and was picked up by the Stockton Thunder, a division rival and affiliate of those pesky Edmonton Oilers. So we'll probably be shooting on Boron rather than protect him in the near future.

No Donati again?
Not sure what's up. Couldn't be an honest healthy scratch given that we're short on the bench.
In the ECHL, you can only have a player or two on the 3-day and 7-day IR, although unlimited players on the 30-day IR. I suppose that, given our injury bug, the 3 and 7 day lists are filled up and maybe Donati has an undisclosed injury that's not serious enough to put him on the 30-day IR, and hence a scratch?
That's a COMPLETE guess, though.

NHL.com story: Ferraro brothers so happy together
Despite numerous offers from American Hockey League and European clubs -- where the grass would unquestionably have been greener -- Peter and Chris opted to sign deals with the Las Vegas Wranglers in the ECHL. Not only did “Sin City” offer them a chance to play for one of the league’s annual top teams, but it also provided them a chance to reunite after being separated in 2006-07.

I think the only negative thing I'd throw in to poo poo the numbers is that the defense in front of him is playing lights out. He's not really seeing 20 shots a game and all of those are pretty wimpy (his first goal allowed came from an errant backwards clearance from a Wranglers defenceman).
That being said, if instilling confidence in Lalande is a major purpose of sending him down to Vegas, then that certainly is being accomplished.

Three points to mention this late night/morning.
-A goalie who isn't even playing for us anymore won an award for good play for us. G Daniel Manzato was named the goalie of the month for November. He was 5-0-0, 1so, 1.57GAA, .948% for us that month. Congrats to our boy!
http://www.echl.com/upload_images/DanielManzatoAction.jpg
-D Jason Jozsa has been sent back to us. Thanks, Quad Cities.
-We play Friday, December 7th in Stockton against the Thunder. They are, of course, the affiliate to the Edmonton Oilers, so the fans of the big boys might especially be interested in sticking it to the Oilers in an indirect way.

-D Jason Jozsa has been sent back down from Quad Cities. He's been one of, and maybe the best blueliner on the team this year, so we're certainly glad to see him again. Second leading scorer for d-men with 11pts. in 15 games.
-G Daniel Manzato has been sent back down from Albany. He was great with us on our first stint and if I'm not mistaken, it's another player with Wrangler rights in Albany as the other goalie in Mike McKenna?

Wranglers’ Donally Continues To Improve
http://www.echl.com/upload_images/RyanDonallyMUG.jpg
December 15, 2007
By Todd Dewey
Las Vegas Review-Journal (http://www.reviewjournal.com/)
LAS VEGAS - Off the ice, Wranglers left wing Ryan Donally (http://echl.leaguestat.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=957) is a self-described "laid-back dude" who loves to have fun and will pull a prank on a teammate at any time.
On the ice, though, the 6-foot-4-inch, 230-pound Donally fills the role of enforcer for Las Vegas but needs to play with more of a mean streak if he is to realize his dream of playing in the NHL.
"It's something I'm working on, but it's not necessarily a natural thing for me," said Donally, 22, a 2003 third-round draft pick of the Calgary Flames who leads the Wranglers with 100 penalty minutes. "I have to park my personality off the ice and play with a different personality on the ice.
"I have to play with more of an edge and be more physical and more intense."
Donally also needs to improve his offensive game, and he has done that so far in his second season with the Wranglers. He leads the team with five power-play goals, scoring 10 points in 21 games. Last season, he scored just eight points in 33 games with Las Vegas, spending most of the season playing sparingly for Omaha of the American Hockey League.
"He's made big improvements," Las Vegas coach Glen Gulutzan said. "He's always been a character guy, willing to fight and protect his teammates, but his offensive game is really starting to come along.''
Donally has gained valuable experience playing on a line with the Ferraro brothers, Peter and Chris, who lead Las Vegas with 24 and 22 points, respectively.
"He creates a lot of space out there for us and he's our protector, that's the bottom line," Chris Ferraro said. "He continues to get better and impress, and I think it's just a matter of time before things open up for him."
Gulutzan said Donally has a legitimate chance to make it to the NHL.
"He's still got to make some strides, but he's definitely one of the players here I consider an NHL prospect," the coach said.

I'd really like to see Donally get a shot up here, he's really impressing this season. He's more than doubled his point output(now over half a point a game, pretty good for a big thumper like him). He has 14 points so far in the 25 games he's played. He has 110 PIM in 25 games, but 55 of those are from fighting majors, 10 came from an instigator misconduct, and 10 came from 5 matching minors. So, that leaves 35 PIM in 25 games. If you take away 15 of those, a charging major and game misconduct, that leaves 20 PIM ... 10 minor penalties in 25 games from an enforcer is pretty good I think. In my opinion, if an enforcer can give you more points then minor penalties when he hurts the team(puts the other team on the PP), then he's doing a hell of a job.

I hate to sound like a blind homer, but I really think just about anyone on our team is deserving of the All Star honors. The Ferraro brothers are the most obvious picks. edit....some notes about the game....we had it in the first period, but Idaho's defense just clamped up and gave us no chances. We may have outshot them, but it was pretty wimpy stuff. 0-for-9 on the power play pretty much says it all. Cracknell looked great, played solid defense with a couple of picked pockets and at least one crushing body check. Cracknell played center for most of the night. D Mike Madill showed a lot of effort as usual, but some wimpy shooting from the blue line. LW Aki Seitsonen was nearly a third defenseman, playing back alot tonight. Good on the faceoff, very protective of the puck offensively. We just were second best tonight.

I hope so....not sure that Manzato can handle playing every night like this.
C Justin Donati was suspended from the team. I think he was already on injured reserve, so I don't know that we actually get a free roster spot with his suspension. And I'm not sure why he was suspended, but these things usually precede said player signing to another team in another league.

Oh, what a little googling will do. Donati is going to college and playing for UPEI.

No big surprise: G John Ceci was released today. Making room for Lalande, no doubt.
He played 3 games, had a record of 1-0-2, had a GAA of 2.21, and a save percentage of .911, which all seems fine and dandy, but our defense has been so sharp that I would rate against those numbers. On December 17th, he gave up 4 goals on only 18 shots and never saw ice time again for us.

Congratulations to our boy, D Tyson Strachan, who is now a Peoria Riverman. Well deserving of the promotion.
And congratulations are in order to our Head Coach Glen Gulutzan, who was named along with Victoria Salmon Kings (Vancouver Canucks affiliate) Head Coach Mark Morrison as the National Conference coaching staff for this year's ECHL All Star Game.
The profile on Gully as per the ECHL news release:
Glen Gulutzan, Las Vegas Wranglers
Glen Gulutzan is in his fifth season as general manager and head coach of Las Vegas. He led Las Vegas to the Brabham Cup championship in 2006-07 as the Wranglers won their last 13 regular season games to finish with a 46-12-14 record and 106 points, becoming only the second team in ECHL history to score 100 points in back-to-back seasons. Las Vegas won the first five games in the Kelly Cup Playoffs to tie the professional hockey league record for consecutive wins. Gulutzan was named ECHL Coach of the Year in 2005-06 after the Wranglers finished second overall with 112 points and a 53-13-6 record, tying the league record for second-most wins and finishing with the third-highest point total in the 18-year history of the ECHL. The Wranglers are 173-80-35 and have reached the Kelly Cup Playoffs each of the last two years and three times since joining as an expansion team in 2003-04, losing to the eventual Kelly Cup champion each time. Before stepping behind the Las Vegas bench, the 34-year-old Gulutzan spent four seasons as player-assistant coach with Fresno of the West Coast Hockey League. He was named All-WCHL in 1999 and 2000 and helped the Falcons win the championship in 2002 and advance to Game 7 of the finals in 2003. Gulutzan began his professional career in 1996-97 with Fresno and had a team record 80 assists and 110 points in 60 games while also playing in the International Hockey League with Utah and Las Vegas. In addition to six seasons in Fresno, the native of The Pas, Manitoba also played in both Finland and Sweden. Glen and his wife, Nicole, live in Las Vegas with their son, Landon, and their daughters, Emma, Brielle and Gracie.

Wranglers' Limpright Enjoys Being Agitator
http://www.echl.com/upload_images/ShawnLimpright.jpg January 6, 2008
By Todd Dewey
Las Vegas Review-Journal (http://www.reviewjournal.com/)
LAS VEGAS - Whenever an altercation breaks out during a Wranglers game, Las Vegas left wing Shawn Limpright (http://echl.leaguestat.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=571) is usually the first player on the scene to support a teammate or settle a score.
Then again, there's a good chance the savvy six-year ECHL veteran instigated the incident in the first place.
Limpright, 26, enjoys being an agitator on the ice and said engaging in psychological warfare helps get him into his game.
"I like to get under a few guys' skin. It's always fun just to see their reaction," he said. "It kind of gets me fired up in the game. To have a guy running at me all game, that's fun. I like that."

Former ECHL Goalie Curry Named
Rbk Edge/AHL Rookie Of The Month
January 9, 2008
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The American Hockey League announced that former Las Vegas and Wheeling goaltender John Curry (http://echl.leaguestat.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=1631) has been named the Rbk Edge/AHL Rookie of the Month for December.

The 23 year old was 4-1-1 with a shutout, a goals-against average of 1.48 and a save percentage of .939 in six starts for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in December.
The Wheeling Nailers are the ECHL affiliate of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL and the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League.

He was reassigned to Wheeling upon his return from Germany and after making one start for the Nailers was reassigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton by Pittsburgh. He is 6-3-1 with a shutout, a goals-against average of 1.99 and a save percentage of .921 in 10 games for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Deft Touch Helps All-Star Coach
Gulutzan Keep Wranglers In Line
January 18, 2008
http://www.echl.com/upload_images/GlenGulutzan.jpg
By Todd Dewey
Las Vegas Review-Journal (http://www.reviewjournal.com/)
LAS VEGAS - In a scene straight out of the movie "Miracle," irate Wranglers coach Glen Gulutzan canceled a scheduled off day last Sunday and put his players through grueling wind sprints the morning after a 3-2 home loss to the Fresno Falcons.
Two nights later, after Las Vegas' third straight loss in overtime, Gulutzan relented and let his players head to a local nightclub for an early birthday party for the Ferraro twins, Chris and Peter, who turn 35 on Jan. 24.
The Wranglers responded with a 5-0 thrashing of Victoria on Friday, further proof of the value of Gulutzan's even-handed coaching style. Las Vegas leads the ECHL National Conference with a 23-6-7 record.
"If I'm mad, I'm mad, and if I'm not, I'm not. I don't try to be mad when I'm not," said Gulutzan, also the team's general manager. "(Assistant coach Brent Bilodeau) and I have taken the idea that we'd rather teach and try to develop and get guys on our side without trying to be a tyrant.
"It's worked so far, and if it doesn't work, the luxury I have as the GM is to just trade the guy."

edit....interesting note: Utah had 4 shots on goal in the 1st period, Las Vegas had 4 shots on goal in the 2nd, and 4 shots on goal in the 3rd. Enormous power play advantage for Utah in the 2nd and 3rd periods explains the low shot output for us, but we scored 3 of our goals on those 8 shots.

Manzato Works To Fulfill Potential
January 27, 2008
By Todd Dewey
Las Vegas Review-Journal (http://www.reviewjournal.com/)
LAS VEGAS - When the Carolina Hurricanes selected Wranglers goalie Daniel Manzato (http://echl.leaguestat.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=1636) in the fifth round of the 2002 NHL Draft, they did so on the glowing recommendation of esteemed Anaheim Ducks goalie coach Francois Allaire.
http://www.echl.com/upload_images/DanielManzatoMug.jpg
After watching him play at a summer camp, Allaire
said Manzato, a 6-foot Swiss netminder, was as good as four-time Stanley Cup champion Patrick Roy was at his age.
Manzato, who turned 24 on Jan. 17, has yet to live up to that lofty praise, but he's working hard to realize his potential.
"My dream is to play in the NHL, and I will try to do my best to one day play in the NHL," the affable Manzato said in a thick Swiss accent. "I'm still young, I can improve and I will try to stay here in North America."

Mike McBain has been a member of the Las Vegas Wranglers from day one. An original roster member, sort of still with us:
Wranglers' McBain Retiring, In Stages
January 31, 2008
http://www.echl.com/upload_images/MikeMcBain.jpg
By Rob Miech
Las Vegas Sun (http://www.lasvegassun.com/sports/)
LAS VEGAS - Stuck at 599 career games, Mike McBain (http://echl.leaguestat.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=557) was also getting stuck just trying to pull on his socks.
A bulging disk in his lower back was the worst of several injuries that made the 30-year-old captain feel twice his age at the end of last season, and the last original Wrangler knew retirement was reality.
With one caveat. One more game. He wanted No. 600.
Glen Gulutzan, the only coach and general manager in the five-year history of the Wranglers, enlisted McBain as a pseudo assistant this season.
But the 6-foot-2 defenseman still has a spot on the roster, and his No. 2 jersey and equipment occupy a locker in the dressing room.

edit.....and the full story has a picture of our rink....I think we have a beautiful and very comfortable arena, so I thought I'd copy that pic for you to take a gander:

FIRST PERIOD
17:00 left....scoreless....exciting night! We have a full roster, for once, and we have two new guys in the form of D Brad Cole and D Gord Baldwin sent down from Quad Cities. Announcers are very, very excited to see two big guys come in seeing how we get outmuscled by the physical teams....
16:00 left...scoreless....the Falcons getting all the shots so far, 4-1, even though we have all the puck possession in Fresno's end....Lalande got beat and a puck rang off the post, but didn't go in...
12:00 left...scoreless...Lalande with a big stop on a 2-1 breakaway for Fresno....some tension in the air with some post-whistle jostling...
7:00 left....scoreless....Lalande, big save!!!! He's coming out of his crease and challenging these shooters!.....Not sure who they're paired off with, but the new guys Cole and Baldwin are not paired with each other....
1:00 left....scoreless....we're going on a power play....not many whistles, this period went by fast....Lalande has been spectacular thus far, big saves with no rebounds....
SECOND PERIOD
20:00 left....scoreless....I'm going to watch the end of the Oilers/Stars game but I'll be back to check in on this one....
14:00....1-0 Fresno....Falcons scored while I was watching Oilers/Stars and they just tallied again....2-0, Fresno....
11:00...2-0 Fresno.....monster slap shot from Luke Curtin on the power play puts Fresno up 3-0....The Wranglers sound like they're completely flat....
THIRD PERIOD
19:00 left...3-0 Fresno....RYAN DONALLY!!!! We bag an early one, lots of time to claw back!...
15:00 left...3-1 Fresno....we've got a 5-on-3 power play, Wranglers playing a little crafty now....
13:00 left...3-1 Fresno....Tyler Mosienko out front!!!!! SCOOOOOOREEE!!!!!!....we're still on the power play, too!....AND WE IMMEDIATELY SCORE AGAIN!!!! WHAT IS GOING ON?!!! OFF THE CENTER ICE FACE OFF?!!!!....Donally just chucked the puck down the length of the ice and Peter Ferraro charged full speed and tucked it in!...
OVERTIME
5:00 left...3-3 tie....alright, an extra frame tonight!....we will start the OT with a tiny power play....
0:00 left...3-3 tie...LALANDE LITERALLY SAVES THE GAME!....with less than a second to go in the game, Lalande stands tall to smother the final shot of the game! Wow! Shootout!!!
SHOOTOUT
Falcons' first shooter.....saved by Lalande! 0-0
RW Peter Ferarro......kick save. 0-0
Falcons' second skater....stick save, Lalande! 0-0
C Tyler Mosienko....stick save, showing five hole, takes it away. 0-0
Falcons' third skater.....hits the post! 0-0
RW Aki Seitsonen.......BACKHANDER SCORES!!!!!! 1-0, Las Vegas
Falcons' fourth skater....puck goes wide! 1-0, Las Vegas
LW Ryan Donally can win it here....right kick save. 1-0, Las Vegas
Falcons' fifth skater, Lalande can finish it.........beats Lalande glove side. 1-1.
C Bruce Mulherin.....SCOOOOORES!!!!!!! WRANGLERS WIN!!!!!!!!

PRE-GAME
edit...this is from the ECHL Today press release:
Las Vegas Wranglers (30-9-7) at Phoenix RoadRunners (16-25-6) 7:11 p.m. MT
• Wranglers lead season series 6-0-1, including 4-0-0 at Phoenix, and are 20-2-3 all-time against the RoadRunners.
• RoadRunners defenseman Reagan Rome (http://echl.leaguestat.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=770) scored career-high two goals on Tuesday against Las Vegas.
• Las Vegas’ Tyler Mosienko (http://echl.leaguestat.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=564) has two game-winning goals and four points (3g-1a) in his last four games.
• Daniel Sisca (http://echl.leaguestat.com/stats/player.php?lang_id=en&id=1384) leads the RoadRunners at home with 16 assists and 22 points in 22 games.
-edit....pre-game National Anthem done with an acoustic guitar playing, sounds like a folky, Jose Feliciano version.
FIRST PERIOD
17:00 left....scoreless.....defensive minded conservativeness from the Wranglers, lots of dump ins and such...
13:00 left....scoreless.....Lalande with some good stickhandling....He's Marty Turco!
10:00 left...scoreless....Phoenix with the first big scoring chance and Lalande holds steady. No rebounds so far tonight....Hooking call on Phoenix a few moments later and Vegas gets the first power play of the night....KALENIECKI OFF THE FACE OFF!!!!!!!!.....face off win, pass, pass, and boom!.....Wranglers get called for a penalty for goaltender interference, Bruce Mulherin....
2:00 left....1-0, Las Vegas....PHOENIX TIES IT UP...TURNOVER IN OUR OWN ZONE....not sure who was responsible for the turnover, but Madill, Mosienko, Seitsonen, Baldwin, and Donally will all be getting minuses there...
end of period....1-1 tie.....Gotta say that might marginally have been the Roadrunners' period. Kind of a dull 20 minutes aside from two good goals. Definately room for improvement.
FIRST INTERMISSION
Interview with LW Shawn Limpright....very paraphrased: feels good to now be an all time scorer (for the Wranglers)....tired of being razzed on for almost being the all time scorer and now he's finally there...at first, didn't want to go to Las Vegas when traded from Dayton but now enjoys himself alot....going now for 500 career Las Vegas PIMs, although current leader Adam Huxley holds it and wants to come back to Las Vegas....Aaron Power scored the goal that gave Shawn the all time franchise mark via assist....not really a point a game kind of guy....enough points to go around this team....Mosienko's goal the other night was pretty, splitting two d-men to score....Phoenix is early in their existence and we've been fortunate to be successful against them, it's important to keep focus....big loss against Fresno, well everyone is due for a bad night over a long season and Fresno is a great team, you won't win every game and it's good to get a bad one out of the way, it happens....neat to see Shaquille O'Neal in the building before the morning skate at a press conference...have to look up to see him....hi to the fans in Las Vegas and family!
SECOND PERIOD
19:00....1-1 tie....Phoenix seems to be more physical than we are...Roadrunners with a flurry of shots!.....and the Wranglers breakout.....AND PETER FERRARO WITH A LASER SHOT!!!!!...a breakaway and Peter took it all the way down the ice and puts us back on top....
17:00....2-1, Vegas....A flurry of shots by the Wranglers and the action is ended with a vicious cross check by a Phoenix player that takes out Kelly Czuy....back on the power play...Czuy is okay...RYAN DONALLY CENTERS TO PETER FERRARO WHO ONE TIMES IT IN!!!!....POWER PLAY GOAL AND PETER HAS TWO QUICK ONES!!!....Aki Seitsonen takes a big hit not long after the goal....
10:00...3-1, Vegas.....TURNOVER IN THE PHOENIX ZONE....CZUY SCOOOORES!!!!!!...do a wookie wail, everyone ("Czuy" pronounce Chew-ee).
8:00...4-1, Vegas....Phoenix is gonna get a 5-on-3 here....refs looking to help out a little bit...
4:00...4-1, Vegas...now we're getting a big power play....Limpright taken out with a cheap shot from Reagan Rome and we have a 5-on-3 for a minute and a half....KELLY CZUY ON THE DOORSTEP!!!!!....WOOHOO!!!!....POWER PLAY GOAL...
2:00...5-1, Vegas...Now only the defensive minded Aki Seitsonen is the only forward without a point tonight....now things are getting chipping, big hit from a Phoenix player, I think on Seitsonen....Brad Cole stepped in to protect his teamates, so he'll be hitting the box....Phoenix player being sent to the dressing room in addition to the one in the box....nope, Cole is back on the ice....
1:00....5-1, Vegas...things are getting out of control...ref is throwing everyone in the penalty box to settle things down now....Limpright got a double minor!!!.....
0:05...5-1, Vegas....PHOENIX SCORES....Well, chop that double minor down, I guess....
THIRD PERIOD
13:00...5-2, Vegas.....it's a penalty fest, with the refs trying to keep an out of control game on as mellow a level as possible....
9:00....5-2, Vegas....we're officially in complete defensive mode...
6:00...5-2, Vegas....another power play for us....the box score already shows the stars of the game, the local media has literally mailed this one in...
4:00....5-2, Vegas....excellent save by Lalande....
2:00....5-2, Vegas....nasty slash by Peluso puts the Roadrunners on the power play.....Lalande toughing out some good pressure....
end....5-2, Vegas....penalty killed, Vegas wins!

I love the Las Vegas Wranglers to a religious level, and to that end, I will attempt to continue this thread business as usual. That being said, I've suffered a pretty devestating personal tragedy and unfortunately life must trump hockey.
In the event that any interest for the Wranglers has been spurred by this thread but I am unable to continue information, the two reliable sources you can check on are obviously as follows:
www.lasvegaswranglers.com (http://www.lasvegaswranglers.com)
www.echl.com (http://www.echl.com)
If this is au revoir (and it probably isn't), then I hope all is well with anyone reading this.
Of course, there is no better remedy to punctuations of tragedy as sport and so hopefully I will be MORE in tune than ever to the fortunes and failings of my favorite hockey team.
Take care,
Matt

I only stumbled on this forum yesterday, and after reading the Wranglers section, I am here to help keep you guys updated.
I am a season ticket holder and attend almost every home game. I have missed 1 in the last 2 seasons. I am also a member of the Wranglers Hockey Booster Club, so I can give keep you informed. I don't know if I can go into the depth of Wranglers110, but I can try to help. I do keep a web site with the Wranglers stats, schedule and a brief recap of the games. If you are interested, the location is in my profile.
So if you guys have any Wranglers questions, let me know and I will try to answer them.

Absolutely, thank you very much for those. I took some of Donally and Jozsa for some scrapbooks too. But that is all they get used for. They are great quality pictures, much better than I get with my simple point and shoot camera.

Are they on your site? If so, I will go take a look. I think we could use some more. He may be staying up there since he is on their Clear Day list, but we'll see. Also, you mentioned getting some pictures signed. Did you still want that? I can get them signed for you if you want. Let me know.

Well, last night was a big game for the Wranglers. With the overtime victory, not only did they clinch the number 1 spot in the conference, they reached 100 points for the 3rd straight year (1st team in ECHL history), and Peter Ferraro eclipsed the record for most goals scored in a season with 35. Now the focus has to be getting in playoff shape, hoping to get some players back from the AHL, and staying healthy.
Right now, the IR has Chris Ferraro (concussion), Sean Owens (concussion) and Shawn Limpright (knee). The only one expected back for the early rounds of the playoffs in Owens. We have 8 players in the AHL. QC has Burke, Cole and Baldwin, San Antonio has Curtis Fraser, Milwaukee has Mike Madill, Bridgeport has Tyler Mosienko, Peoria has Tyson Strachan, and Grand Rapids has Jason Jozsa. At least I think that is everyone. Of those players on recall, 6 are defensemen. Right now we have 4 playing, with Ryan Donally filling in.
Grand Rapids just got eliminated from the playoffs, so Jozsa should be coming back eventually. I'm sure the 10 games most teams have remaining will decide how many of our guys come down.
In the first round of the playoffs we will either be playing Bakersfield, Phoenix or Stockton. I would say the team we would least like to face is Bakersfield as they give us a hard fight each time we play them, especially with the new guys they have brought in. We'll see what the next 2 weeks holds before our playoff matchup is determined.

I noticed Aki Seitsonen has been putting up more points than earlier in the year. Has his play really improved?. Had high hopes for him coming out of Junior in Prince Albert. He looked good for Finland at the world juniors too.
Also curious to hear what you think of the other Flames draft picks on the team. Adam Cracknell, Ryan Donnelly, and Kevin Lalande.

This is by far the most successful year Aki has had with us. He seems to be in the right place at the right times and is finally burying his chances.
As for the others, Cracknell is doing what he normally does down here, then he goes up to QC and is either a healthy scratch or on a checking line. That won't do it for him.
Donally is having some issues with his hand but he is going to be a good power forward with his size. He has even been dabbling in playing defense these last couple of weeks.
Kevin LaLande is a solid goalie, but sometimes overplays his angles a little too much and has some problems controlling rebounds. But in this league that is normal. I think it would do him some good to be back down here next year so he can play consistently. I think he would only be a back up in the AHL next year.

When they start, I'll do my best. We start on Friday at home against Stockton. We should handle them pretty easily, but they did get a bunch of reinforcements from Springfield and we are still waiting for ours from QC. They should be here in time for game 4.

Well, our reinforcments have arrived. According to the ECHL website, we added Ryan Donally and Gerry Burke today, so we actually have 7 D. Amazing considering the last few weeks. Now we actually have to scratch a D man. We still have 2 players in the AHL, one in Peoria, so he will be back shortly and one in San Antonio. Unfortunately for us, they made the playoffs so we have to wait for him.
It will be good to get back to ECHL hockey tonight. I've been watching the Calgary/San Jose series but not rooting for Calgary. I'm from the Bay Area so I want the Sharks to advance. Hopefully there will be as much intensity tonight as there has been in the Sharks series.

I had a feeling that was going to be unpopular, but if you look at it, the Flames are a lot of former Sharks so there is a natural connection. They've been a good couple of games. My only complaint was that the refs let too much hooking, holding and interference go on Calgary's part. But still good games.

i know this is a bit off topic, but i love watching kolanos play with chucko. it actually makes him not look like the most worthless guy out there. i love watching kolanos move the puck down and put a great pass to chucko in front of the net and then watching chucko give the puck away because he sux0rs.

Well, the first round the of the playoffs started and it was a disappointing game. The effort seemed to be there, but Lalande had a bad game. Basically, of the 5 real goals scored (not including the empty netter), they were all soft. We got 41 shots on goal, so we were trying, but not much got past the Stockton goalie. Not many penalties called, although there could have been a lot of them. Game 2 is tonight, so hopefully they will rebound with a solid effort.

Is there an update on the Wranglers? I was looking at the scoring race for the ECHL playoffs for this year, and it seems that Adam Cracknell is sitting in 4th with 10 points.
Looking at the summary, it does seem that some of the Flames prospects have figured heavily into the success of the Wranglers this post season.

Now that I can come here again, being a Sharks fan and all, I can give an update. Last night the Wranglers defeated Stockton to win their series 4-2 and now move on to play Alaska. The Flames prospects have done well, especially Cracknell. Burke has been OK, Seitsonen was good until last night, where he basically disappeared, and Lalande has been iffy at best, but last night he was great. The best player for us last night was another AHL callup we just got back from San Antonio, Curtis Fraser. Ryan Donally is out for a while with a "lower body injury", but the boot on his foot indicated where the injury is. Also, we got our other goalie back from the Swiss national team thanks to the Ducks giving them Jonas Hiller.
Now we move on to the series everyone wanted to see, Vegas vs. Alaska. We have a great rivalry and it should be a fun series.

Playoffs will do that. We have been eliminated by them twice I believe. Also, we were battling for the Brabham Cup (most points) a couple years ago and they beat us by 1. We have a big rivalry with Idaho too for the same reason, playoff elimination.

There are 2 other forums that I know of. Intotheboards is one, they have an ECHL forum with a lot of Alaska and Bakersfield fans. We basically get told we are the worst behaved fans in the league in there and probably 3 regular fans of Vegas post. But the conversations should be pretty spirited once the series starts. And the other is hockeymayhem. They created a Wranglers forum for us, but there isn't a lot of activity there yet.

The Wranglers laid a pair of whuppin's down on the Alaska Aces for the past two evenings:
FRIDAY: Las Vegas wins 8-0
-G Kevin Lalande made 20 saves and both Peter Ferraro and Adam Miller scored 2 goals and 3 assists as the Wranglers won 8-0, outshooting the Aces 46-20. Aces G Marek Schwarz was in net for the entire game. Yep. Flames prospect Aki Seitsonen got an assist while Adam Cracknell was pointless with 4 shots.
SATURDAY: Las Vegas wins 3-1
-G Kevin Lalande made 22 saves and D Jason Jozsa scored the game-winning and set up the insurance goal mid-way through the third period as Vegas topped Alaska 3-1, out-shooting them 43-23. Flames prospect Adam Cracknell scored the opening goal, while Aki Seitsonen was pointless with 4 shots.
The next games are Tuesday and Thursday in Alaska.
FLAMES PROSPECTS IN THE ECHL PLAYOFFS:
-G Kevin Lalande: 6 wins, 2 losses; 2.42 gaa, 1 shutout in 8 games (also has 1 assist)
-RW Adam Cracknell: 4 goals, 7 assists, +5 in 8 games
-C Aki Seitsonen: 3 goals, 1 assist, +3 in 8 games

I B2'd Friday's game and listened to part of Saturday's game....plan to watch the Tuesday and Thursday games on B2 as well!
The Wranglers are a fun team to watch and it's great to see Lalande again and (hopefully from here on!) doing well. They just got their other goalie back (sorry, can't remember his name and I'm kinda too rushed to look...) so it could be that Lalande won't be seeing as much ice time. Hope they stick with him while he's hot, though!
The Aces are using a goaltender, Marek Schwarz, who QC saw a lot when he was with Peoria. Their other goalie, Chris Beckford-Tseu, also played in Peoria, as did a few of their other players.
I'm getting into this series in a big way!!!

Las Vegas is a win away from the National Conference Finals following a 5-2 decision over the Alaska Aces Tuesday night in Anchorage. Despite outshooting the Wranglers for the first time in the series, the Aces failed to get much past G Kevin Lalande (who made 37 saves). Flames prospect Adam Cracknell set up 2 goals, while Aki Seitsonen was -1 with 0 points. The points moved Cracknell into a 3-way tie for the scoring lead in the ECHL playoffs (4 goals & 9 assists in 9 games). Lalande improved his record to 7-2.
Game 4 goes Thursday night in Anchorage.

Lalande played very well and Cracknell is doing fantastic. He's on fire!
Hope Donnaly can get back. Burke was hitting everything in the defensive corners. Burke is a little of a curiosity to me. Wonder if we'll see him in camp this year.
I was impressed with the game and quality of play...LV is fast and gets out of the defensive zone quickly. Lalande left no fat rebounds and came up big with a pad save on a clean breakaway. Cracknell looked awesome along the boards in the offensive zone maintianing possesion and using his body very well. Hope I can catch another game.
Good luck Wranglers.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think if you're on the AHL team's anointed playoff roster, you can't get sent down to the ECHL except for emergency injury replacements or whatnot.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuesday, April 08, 2008 Josh Fisher
Las Vegas NV - The Las Vegas Wranglers ® announced today the team’s 2008 Kelly Cup Playoff Roster.

Forwards Ryan Donally and Curtis Fraser also remain in the AHL. Center Chris Ferraro will start the playoffs on the injured reserve list.

Why didn't Quad City send down any reinforcements to Vegas?
In the ECHL, we are limited to our 23 man roster we submit. We took a chance and left Cole and Baldwin off since we were heavy on D. However, they have to have played 5 games with us during the season to be eligible, so we got everyone we could except for Cole and Baldwin. That's why we got Curtis Fraser from San Antonio for 1 game before the season ended, so he had 5 games with us.

Playing on a line with the Ferraros for part of the season doesn't hurt. But he seems to be learning how to use his size to his advantage, and on top of that he is a really nice guy, not much of an ego on him. My guess is next year he plays in the AHL full time, but only if Calgary renews his contract as he is an RFA.
