Anyone know somebody who has seen one of Princes recent tour dates?
I am tempted to go, always wanted to see Purple Rain performed live, but I don't want one of those, "Holy crap, this guy is a shell of his former self." experiences.

I don't know if it is on youtube and I'm too lazy too look but anyone who has any interest in Prince absolutely needs to hear Kevin Smith's story from An Evening With Kevin Smith.

Growing up after the Purple Rain phenomenom I always thought Prince was just some fruity R&B singer. Never really gave him much respect, besides acknowledging he had written a ton of hits.
Then I saw him play guitar at the Superbowl half time show and was absolutely blown away.
I bought tickets for his show on Friday. Boom.

Prince in Edmonton:
http://www.edmontonsun.com/2011/12/14/prince-brings-it
The world’s funkiest Jehovah’s Witness brought the hits and a whole lot more to a nearly sold-out house at Rexall Place for his “Welcome 2 Canada” tour. Showing flashes of brilliance throughout, the Artist Formerly Known as the Artist Formerly Known as Prince delivered a solid if somewhat scatterbrained show replete with all the hits fans know and love. Or at least pieces of all the hits fans know and love. Minus some of the pre-Jehovah material that’s too nasty for church, of course. So, no Sexy Motherf---er.
But we heard just about every other steamy, sexy soul tune Prince is known for, some merely knocked out as snippets in medleys. As he shouted at one point, “I have too many hits!” He sure does. And the man sure knows how to blow his own horn. He knows how to ham it up. We heard guitar solo after guitar solo. People blown away by his radioactive funkiness or amazing voice might forget that Prince is also an excellent guitarist who can rock out with the best of them. The audience was encouraged to sing along to the well-known hits at every opportunity.
But for every flaw came a spine-tingling moment. The showmanship was top notch. Memorable moments included a version of Play That Funky Music in honour of the mad dancing mojo of some white boy from the audience brought on stage, and Purple Rain – ending the main set with an explosion of silver confetti.
Two encores followed

Prince pulls off masterful performance
Purple One dazzles 12,000 at Rexall
http://www.edmontonjournal.com/entertainment/Prince+pulls+masterful+performance/5856540/story.html
This was after an hour-long delay that saw the audience tantalized by lights going up and down, as though Prince was going to be making his way on at any minute. From there on it was a greatest hits package that made its way through just about every essential song you ever wanted to hear, which was deeply gratifying, if puzzling. I mean, it’s hard to fuss over a version of 1999 that sounds exactly like how you’d imagine 1999 would sound live when you were 18 and the song was just hitting the airwaves, but you had to wonder what exactly was going through Prince’s head.
But this isn’t a complaint; Prince giving us the show we always wanted was a dream come true. He certainly wasn’t stinting on showmanship; he’s easily the most charismatic performer this writer has ever seen and his every gesture was amplified by screams from the crowd of 12,000, a good portion likely reacting to his early plea that when they went home that night, “somebody take him with them.” Who could resist such sexual directness? He’s the most perfectly formed elf since Ronnie James Dio, dressed in clothes that simultaneously recall Tron and Sun Ra and his every move proclaimed that fact. The band was fantastic, locking on an irresistible groove, shaking it down for all it was worth.
I can't believe the Alberta shows are not selling out. Have people forgotten, or never learned about his genius?

Gotta wonder if World Juniors are eating into the ticket sales for these shows. Ticket packages in both cities are pretty expensive, and Prince is one of the more expensive tours/shows through Alberta as well.
I'm sure lots of people have laid down the cash for World Junior tickets and figure "I've got a whack of games to go to later that month, I'll pass on Prince"

Managed to get two tickets on the floor row 29. That was after a few refreshes, was only getting high 2nd level before that. Looks like the Ticketmaster website had some issues as I couldn't search for tickets until a few minutes after 10am.

Hah. You must be new to ticketmaster.
After around 150 captchas, I got a pair in row 8 in the lower bowl.
If you can, keep trying throughout the day. Ticketmaster picks and chooses the seats to release. The floor & entire lower bowl are not already sold out to AMEX holders. Good seats might come up this afternoon. Or tomorrow. Or on the public sale. Or maybe a few days after the public sale. Or maybe the day of the show.
Good luck :)

You don't need a password for this presale, just an American Express card.
There are still floor singles available right now. All the pairs I'm getting now are 2nd bowl.
Interestingly, out of all the tickets I passed on, I didn't get a single ticket between the bluelines - everything was on the far side of the ice from the stage.

He has the right to charge those prices.
And I have no quams shelling out 200 or so bucks to see a guy like Prince. If people are willing to pay 100 bucks for a ticket to watch some current day pop-puke lip-sync for 90 minutes, or some uninspired emo losers the are going to sing about angst, a legend like Prince deserves 3 times that, at least. There are some concerts, you just shell out for, and worry about the Visa bill when it comes.

Yes, this concert is only for the 1%ers. What kind of comment is that anyway? The guy can charge what the market is willing to pay.

For those looking for the good stuff.... cut to 3:30, and he just materializes..lol.
Anyway, when I see Prince show up a group of legends like that, it just shows you what an absolute freak the guy is. I have always said, if Prince didn't go all weird mode, in the late 80's early 90's, and stayed more fan friendly, the guy could have been as big as the King. He would have been like Elvis, with Hendrix's skill set. I am so frikkin pumped for show tonight after seeing that.

Of course he can charge whatever he wants to charge. My point is that clearly the market is not willing to pay that, given that it is not close to a sell out. It has nothing to do with 1%ers.
As for your points about what you are willing to pay to see someone who's best music was 20 years ago, good for you. I just think that many others do not share that view, again given that it is not close to selling out.

In 2000, Prince started distributing his own music (some of it very good). Without the backing of major record companies, this music was not promoted as before.
It is said there is much unreleased music in his vault:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unreleased_Prince_projects
His recording history is more complicated than I thought. He has returned to major labels for some records:

That is the thing that is lost on a lot of fans. I am no hardcore Prince fan, but as a guy that has dabbled with guitar over the years, he is one of the most incredible players out there.
He just has such a fluid, soulful style. The fact that a lot of his music is labeled as pop, has really hurt his rep as a guitarist to a lot of the casual fans.

He was all but sold out in Edmonton last night. For anyone going to the Calgary show, hang around even after the house lights go up. After two encores the house lights came up and lots of people peeled out thinking it was over. But he apparently came back after ten minutes or so. There could only have been maybe half the crowd left at that point.
Also, he was a full hour late to start the show and the main set was only an hour long. The combined encores were a little over an hour so if previous stops got 4+ encores and 3+ hours they were very fortunate. This was an amazing show. The entire floor, the entire lower bowl and parts of the upper bowl were on their feet from start to finish. Most crowd energy and participation as I've seen at a show in the 20 or so I've been to this year. Security was pretty heavy duty down at the 'point' of the stage - no one was getting near for autographs or any of that. The sax player is awesome.

WOW, very satisfied I blew 400 bucks on 2 tickets tonight. Old school 70s funk so far, I sense the 80s coming up after the break here. I have never seen a guy wind up a crowd like this before.

Oddly, under two hours, one encore. Played more of the "hits" than other shows.
There was a twitter rumor that they are jamming later tonight, but unconfirmed (probably not true).

I have never heard an artist say the city name...SO MUCH!
Was a great show! I thought he would play a little longer (just under 2 hours), but at least his touched on all his hits.
Did anyone notice that the majority of the show was melodies of his songs? I think he only did 2 or 3 from start to finish. Sure glad Purple Rain was one of them!
Here one of several pics I tweeted tonight. You can click my twitter link for more.

It was a great experience for me. Usually I only go to metal shows, but could not pass this one up. Lots of great memories from his music in the 80s. The first 20 minutes he just wound the crowd up like a spring, and it is one of the few concerts I have been to, that people just stood up and danced the entire time. The vibe was so positive in the building. Just tons of good energy. And oddly to me, he seemed way less 'weird' than I expected, based on all the crazy Prince stories floating around.
I NEVER dance, ever. I am defintive proof that white middle aged men should face jail time for attempting to dance in public. But I found by the second set, I was doing my best to groove like a total stiff rythmless dork, but I frankly didn't care. I really got into it. The girlfriend who previously thought the over engineered, contrived, weirdness of Lady Gaga was the most amazing thing she ever saw, was just floored. She was a 90's kid, and being 10 years younger, really didn't know what to expect. She still does not believe that he actually sang and played that well live.
It was just an absolute treat to get to witness a living legend like Prince live. No regrets whatsoever, even though the show was out of my normal comfort zone for genre. Bottom line, they just don't make em like they used to, when it comes to these flamboyant, super showman artists anymore.

Just got back a couple hours ago from the Prince afterjam at KI. Wow is all I can say. NPG started playing at about 230 or so. Prior to that, Prince hired DJ was spinning funk and old school. While NPG was playing, at about 2:50am or so, Prince joined them. Played bass and keyboards, etc and the group was just jamming with the ladies doing vocals.
Id say at about 3:20 or so, he left dancefloor(where all the instruments were) and said bye. His backup singer Shelby sang with the band till bout 345, by then most of the crowd had left the venue. Funny thing is, at 345am, Prince comes back and says "Arent you glad I didnt leave" He then plays and sings till about 415am. Nothing compares to you and as well continues to just jam.
The man is truly a legend and just loves to play.

Yes, but Prince has not put out anything relevant for a decade. The Flames just slightly less ;).
If not the best show i've ever seen it was top 5. Totally the best individual performance i've ever seen, and by a wide wide margin.
And Lanny's stache you're jealous and you don't even know it.

Prince: The royal visit
http://www.calgarysun.com/2011/12/15/royal-visit
Prince isn’t one to do the same show twice. Calgarians weren’t treated to the same epic 31/2-hour spectacle Prince gave Toronto fans last month. In fact, the show didn’t even quite hit the two-hour mark.
The singer has always been a mix of sexy, swaggering rock star caricature and over-the-top theatrics, and he showed Wednesday his flamboyant stage presence is still very much intact.
Despite being a touch hammy, Prince backed up his showmanship — as he’s always done — with magnificently solid musicianship.
Not only can he wield a guitar with more flair than most rock stars half his age, his band, The New Power Generation, is one of the tightest funk outfits I’ve ever seen.
Yet, Prince still offered a heaping plate of delicious Grade A funk, soul and rock ’n’ roll.

Prince turns Calgary into ‘funkiest city in Canada’
http://www.calgaryherald.com/entertainment/Prince+turns+Calgary+into+funkiest+city+Canada/5862454/story.html
We have never had it all at once, never had it provided so perfectly, so remarkably, so unforgettably as it was Wednesday night at the Saddledome during pop funk icon Prince’s brilliant set to beat most others.
Packed into a tight, taut, dynamite, purple package, the concert, which was part of the regal one’s quick hit Welcome 2 Canada Tour, was one of the best a casual goer or professional attendee could ever claim to have seen and heard.
Top 10? Definitely.
Seriously. It was that good. On almost every level.
No, it wasn’t as epically long as previous concerts have been and some promises had led us to believe. But rarely has a two-hour evening seemed so effortless and so packed with excellence. And, granted, his use of this city’s name in song and in encouragement, bordered on the mocking, but still made it sound so downright sexy and exotic,
And the rest of the show, the elements that really mattered, here really aren’t enough superlatives to describe them, the energy, the experience, the musicianship, the entertainment, the everything that it was.
It wasn’t just a concert, it was an event, something that everyone in the building will likely remember, something that everyone who wasn’t will regret, and something you’ll be lucky to ever be offered again.

Caught the Watch the Throne show in Vancouver over the weekend. It was completely ridiculous and over the top. I loved every minute of it, probably the best concert I have ever seen. Almost three hours of non-stop hits, Kanye and Jay-z absolutely killed it. They had the crowd going absolutely crazy all night.
To close the show they played N***as in Paris 11 times in a row. 11. It was insane.

I'm looking at some Pink Floyd in Edmonton tickets at stubhub. I'm thinking of either buying some floor seats at about 20 rows or some 100 level tickets on either sides. I've never seen any show from the floor lest the guy up front blocks my view. I'm barely 6ft tall, do you think the floor seats or the 100 level seats to the sides are better for me?

Bruce Springsteen's eulogy for Clarence Clemons: brucespringsteen.net (http://t.co/xPZtayy)
http://brucespringsteen.net/news/index_archive.html
Clarence doesn't leave the E Street Band when he dies. He leaves when we die.
So, I'll miss my friend, his sax, the force of nature his sound was, his glory, his foolishness, his accomplishments, his face, his hands, his humor, his skin, his noise, his confusion, his power, his peace. But his love and his story, the story that he gave me, that he whispered in my ear, that he allowed me to tell... and that he gave to you... is gonna carry on. I'm no mystic, but the undertow, the mystery and power of Clarence and my friendship leads me to believe we must have stood together in other, older times, along other rivers, in other cities, in other fields, doing our modest version of god's work... work that's still unfinished. So I won't say goodbye to my brother, I'll simply say, see you in the next life, further on up the road, where we will once again pick up that work, and get it done.
Big Man, thank you for your kindness, your strength, your dedication, your work, your story. Thanks for the miracle... and for letting a little white boy slip through the side door of the Temple of Soul.

The San Francisco festival Noise Pop (http://2012.noisepop.com/) turns 20 this year, and as part of the celebration, a couple of legends are coming to town to play their classic albums in full. The Flaming Lips will play all of The Soft Bulletin, and Bob Mould will perform Copper Blue, the 1992 debut from his post-Hüsker Dü band Sugar, for the first time ever. The festival, which comes to venues around town 2/21-26, will also feature Built To Spill, Sleigh Bells, Archers Of Loaf, Die Antwoord, Surfer Blood, Cursive, Wye Oak, Matthew Dear, Craig Finn, Veronica Falls, Grimes, Bleached, and a ton of others. Check here (http://2012.noisepop.com/) for all the info.

Gonna try to this this one up, I typically try to avoid all ages gigs at MacEwan because the beer sales are always so far away from the show, but Social D has a wicked live show. Plus the Toadies live album Live from Paradise is on pretty regular rotation for me.

It's easy to bag on Hanson, but honestly it seems like they've been making a pretty modest living in the music business since the mmmbop days and treating their fans right along the way.
For all intensive purposes they should have been a flash in the pan, yet they opted to go the independent route and continue playing music & releasing albums in the 15 years since they were the anthem for summer 1997.
Not saying I like their music, but I respect that they kept going after they fell out of style and just continued playing & writing music.

It just comes across as smarmy and arrogant. I mean hell, this is a hockey forum, not a university thesis. Publicly correcting a person's grammar mid conversation does nothing to add to the discussion, it just gives one person a little thrill when they can point out "zomg, this person on teh internet used the wrong their!"
If you'd like to compare it to bad breath or BO, there's a difference between pulling a person aside and saying "hey, you need a breath mint" vs declaring it in front of a room of people "hey, doesn't rubecube need a breath mint?"
Now we've gone and opened an entire can of worms about grammer in the concert/music thread, so to bring it back full circle, every nickelback song is the same:

At the end of the day it's just one of those things that gets under my skin. No matter how well intentioned it is, it comes across as condescending.
Particularly when it adds nothing to the conversation/topic at hand. "Hey guys, I know your talking about music, but ain't isn't a real word! Can you believe this person used ain't?!"
But if we're really gonna have this debate it needs it's own thread.

Is that a fact? Not calling you out, just genuinelly interested. I'll give you "could care less" because after you talked about it on CP, I googled it and found that it has become an acceptable phrase.
But I'd be very surprised if "intensive purposes" has been given the same treatment, as people are using a completely different word, which doesn't mean the same thing, when they use the phrase "intensive purposes".

Hard to say it is a fact. Depends on how you see language, either descriptive or prescriptive.
I know there are a few CPers who are militant that language is descriptive. I've even had some heated debates on how far that extends.
If I have my definitions correctly descriptive language says that the words and phrases we use actually defines what is an acceptable word and what isn't. I had a lengthy debate with a CPer about how to pronounce Bruschetta and was basically told there is no wrong answer. It is pronounced however people choose to pronounce it. I would imagine it would be the same with intensive purposes. If it gets used enough, then it becomes accepted, even if it isn't the same as the original phrase.
Those who believe in prescriptive language believe that there are set rules and it is possible to use a word or phrase incorrectly. No matter how often it is still wrong, even if it becomes part of the accepted lexicon.
I fall somewhere in the middle. Personally I don't think intensive purposes, could care less and irregardless should ever be acceptable. Others seem to disagree and claim that if enough people use them, then they are acceptable. Language evolves, learn to deal with it.
I'm sure someone will correct me if any, or all of this, is incorrect.
Edit:
Found a quick little blurb from the thread in question.
People should just quit being prescriptive about language. It's like saying that certain forms of life are incorrect. There's no question of correctness or incorrectness. Only questions of functionality and explanation.
Yeah, but I find us descriptive grammarians are usually getting bees in our bonnets over prescriptive grammarians telling people what language should be, which is much more rational than prescriptive grammarians getting upset over the way language is.
Edit: I suppose for descriptive grammarians and phonologists to be happy there would just need to be an absence of prescriptive grammarians and phonologists. For prescriptive grammarians and phonologists to be happy there would need to be an absence of language.

For as much as I can take or leave Robert Plant as a personality, he has had it right and has showed great wisdom regarding Led Zeppelin since Bonzo died. There is nothing to be gained professionally or artistically by the three remaining members of Led Zeppelin going on tour or writing new music. It would never be the same without Bonham. I think the same holds true for Queen. Brian May seems like a very genuine and nice guy. He's also an amazing guitarist who's created some of the most recognizable riffs in rock history. That said, it tarnishes Queen's legacy to trot out a string of vocalists to sing Queen classics 20 years on. For as great as Paul Rodgers and Adam Lambert are as vocalists, they aren't Freddie.

I don't see how this has any impact on Queens legacy. They will sell out everywhere they go which means people are going to want to see them. As far as Zeppelin goes, If they toured through Western Canada I would do everything to see them and I doubt that I would be the only one.

Motörhead were awesome (and LOUD), had them on my bucket list for a while so I'm was glad to finally see me live. The last 3 songs (Killed by Death/Ace of Spades/Overkill) were beyond epic.
Megadeth was a little inconsistant, any of the older tracks came across great, but I kinda wish I had ponied up to see them on the Rust in Peace anniversary tour instead, the middle section of their set (endgame/th1rt3en tracks) seemed to drag. Sweating bullets & hanger 18 were both highlights.
Volbeat was better than I was expecting, definitely heavier on stage than what I heard before hand on Rdio, but I still think their closer to punk/skate punk than metal. I think they'd do better opening for Social Distortion than Motörhead/Megadeath.
Lacuna Coil, I can't stand them, so I opted to stay home and have a few beer before. The beers were good, nice & tasty :)
What'd did everyone else think?

Looks like X-fest will be back for another year. Their twitter account just started up again.
They say the headliner will be "much bigger" than Jane's Addiction and there will be a lot more toilets this year....we will see.

I saw Radiohead at the Max bell shortly after ok computer came out. Also saw them at the Comodore shortly after the bends came out. Front row for the Commodore show and the only reason me and a few buddies made the drive to Vancouver. Well worth it!

They also need a system that allows people to come and go if they want. Last year once you came in, you couldn't leave and come back in, so you're forced to stay there the entire day.
I wasn't even drinking when I went but I ended up peeing in the bushes because I wasn't going to wait an hour (what people at the front of the line told me) to go to the bathroom. I can't imagine what it was like for the people that were drinking beer all afternoon.
Also, hopefully someone bigger than Jane's Addiction. I pretty much only went for Weezer. I loved Virgin Fest when STP and The Tragically Hip were the headliners. If they can get someone closer to that quality I'd probably go again.

Huge fan of Jane's Addiction, they were the only band I really cared to see. I actually walked in right before Weezer and left while the feedback of Navarro's guitar was still ringing out.
Kind of nice to have a big outdoor music festival in the city, hopefully the headliner is interesting this year and people keep on coming out.

Go big or go home. What's to say Sled Island's main stage would never compete with the Bonnaroo's & Coachella's of the world? South by Southwest has had REM & Metallica do club dates in the last couple years. So who knows what's in store for Sled Island in the next 5-10 years?

That's not out of the realm now. Sled Island is quickly building a reputation as a top summer music festival.

Ace is one of the very few artists that I've always wanted to see live but never been able to; I am rather excited I will now get to check him off the list! As for Hilltop, I saw them when they came through town (@ Flames Central IIRC) a few years back with Classified and that was a really great show, cannot wait to see them again.
