I toyed with the idea of picking up tickets yesterday to Soundgarden but ended up deciding against it. However, I live close enough to Stampede to see the dome and all the parking lots that are regularly filled for major events (in front of the Stampede casino, the one with the old house in it, one across Macleod from the Victoria Park train station, even the parking lots north of the dome) were pretty much completely empty. Were there a lot of people at the concert? It sure didn't seem like there were many there.

hahahahaha, Mike Bell is such a blowhard.

Not everyone has to run around on stage like a jackass to put on a great show. Cornell's voice was great, the instruments were kicking. Maybe he needs to get off the side of the arena and get to the floor where there's a little more action.

Ya I'm not sure how Cornell is supposed to run around the stage while singing and playing guitar, and asking Kim Thayil to hop around, really? I thought Ben Shepperd was great and Matt Cameron is a beast, not sure what Bell's issue was, probably has a hate on for Cornell.

there were less than 10,000, they plaed a smaller area, the stage was further out than it is for normal shows. I don't understand why more people weren't there. Too long since they've released new material? Ticket prices? I don't know.

People go nuts for Pearl Jam, but I've always been a bigger fan of Soundgarden.

Soundgarden rocks 'Dome
Grunge greats musically tight, but performance lacked energy

Sounds like the Meat Puppets put on the better show.

Sold out, but I have some great tickets for sale! PM me!

I thought Soundgarden was great last night. Cornell is an amazing front man, and the band was very tight.

I wasn't overly impressed with the concert last night, dare I say bored? Having seen cornel solo at Mac hall a few years back I was blown away with his power behind the mic. Last night, nit so much. I found the show hum drum and not very tight overall. The crowd was weak at best. There were shining moments, Jesus Christ pose, rusty cage and outshines were very good but in the same breath...:black hole sun was terrible.
Glad I went but I will not attend another soundgarden show again, Cornell solo, sign me up!
Looking forward to PJ and FOO later this year.

While I agree Black Hole Sun sounded terrible, I had a freakin' great time last night. Really impressed with Cornell. Great set list, lots of audience interaction... would have loved to hear "Pretty Noose" but whatever... Rusty Cage was probably the highlight for me.

I was down in the pit all night running around like I was a kid again. Great time. To anyone who didn't feel the energy, you probably weren't trying.

My ears are still ringing from the feedback to end it all. Ben duct-taped his bass to the amp. Was quite the finale.

My wife who is not a big Soundgarden fan, loved the show. Who would think a failed musician working in a nearly obsolete industry would be bitter?

Really? I can't believe I missed it!! Ran to the bathroom after The Day I Tried to Live. I see from the set list I missed My Wave too. I don't understand how I missed two (great) songs in that span of time.

While I agree Black Hole Sun sounded terrible

That's because it's a terrible song. Soundgarden are a great band, and it bothers me that their biggest hit is a whiny ballad. I would have loved to have gone to this show, especially with Meat Puppets opening for them, but I wouldn't be able to sit and hear their answer to "Every Rose Has Its Thorn". I hate it that much.

Mike Bell has introduced me to more great music than just about anyone. He can be a snarky #######, but if he says the show was lackluster I believe him. I wouldn't get upset if I were those of you who liked the show. It's just his opinion anyway.

Anybody else go to Slayer, Rob Zombie, and Exodus last night? I thoroughly enjoyed it, would have liked to hear Exodus play a little longer, but they sounded good. I liked Slayer's set a lot, would have loved to hear Disciple, but they played it last time I saw them so I suppose I shouldn't complain.

I thought it was weird when I saw that the Moody Blues were playing Century Casino during Stampede, and wasn't surprised when they added a second show. But I still thought it was a little embarassing that they'd be playing a casino, and thought demand would be way higher.

Turns out I was right, as they've now booked a show at the Jubilee for Oct 4th, based on the demand during their two night casino run.

I was there. Not the biggest Zombie fan, so I kinda drifted off during his set. Entertaining but when you don't know the songs it's kinda tough to really get into it.

Slayer was great, but weird - while Gary Holt is an incredible guitarist (set with Exodus proves it) it's really weird to hear a different solo in Slayer songs than what Jeff Hanneman usually plays. Still, a great set. What a difference between the two acts - Zombie with the TVs, pyro, dancing robots, costumes; Slayer with the guys in the band and that's it.

A few good bands to check out in a small venue.....

September 5th : The Joy Formidable http://www.primeboxoffice.com/concert/tickets.aspx/the-joy-formidable/Calgary/485

September 30th : Braids with Pepper Rabbit (both worth checking out!)
http://www.primeboxoffice.com/concert/tickets.aspx/braids/Calgary/428

Also Besnard Lakes, worth mentioning again, and The Boxer Rebellion on seperate nights in Sept/Oct....

That's how it was for me and my cousin in Winnipeg but for Slayer. If it was another band we may have left after Rob Zombie finished but Slayer is part of the Big 4 so we stayed just to say we saw Slayer live.

I'm pretty pumped for this as well. My first time seeing a band at the Jube, though I was there for Cheech and Chong a couple years ago. Really looking forward to hearing the band in that kind of venue.

Been listening to the self titled album pretty consistently since this show was announced. Going to be a new experience for me to go into a concert knowing exactly what songs are going to be played and in what order. For the first half anyway.

Awesome awesome show.

Agreed on the ears and the show.

The Jube has got to be, hands down, the best place to see a band in the city. Good seating, no gestapo security, re-entry if you want to step outside, nice seating and space in the concourse before the show, reasonable lineups for merch and drinks, and they announce when the band is going on.

Such a nice change of pace from the Corral and the Dome.

My wife and I are debating - was Homme handing out water or small bottles of Absolut to those people in the front row? We thought they looked like glass containers from where we were sitting..

And based on what I saw, security was in full force hunting down weed smokers in the lower bowl. Good thing I blazed right before the show. Only thing I don't like about the jube is no drinking or smoking in the auditorium. It was especially tough because I was on the aisle.

I love it that the ushers know the times. As soon as I arrived I clarified with one of them that Queens stared at 830. So I went out for a puff at like 20 after. Perfect timing.

Also, I was so close I hardly noticed, but did the whole floor stand the whole show? Seemed everyone around me was.

I was in the first row of the second balcony, right in the middle. Great seats, great sound, great venue. It will be tough to go back to a stadium show at the dome or corral now.

Probably the best live show I've seen to date. I would definitely pay to see them again. I'd love for them to play the Songs for the Deaf album in its entirety one day.

And yeah, the floor stood pretty much the whole time. Some didn't stand for the first set, but most of them were up for the encore.

I just got back from the Osheaga festival in Montreal. What an amazing weekend. They hold it right in parc Jean Drepeau just outside of the downtown core. Beautiful park, amazing set up and beer vendors walking through the crowd!

Lupe Fiasco was probably the highlight for me, an absolutely unreal set. The Hip, Broken Social Scene, Elvis Costello, Twin Shadow, Crystal Castles, Ellie Goulding, Bassnectar and MSTRKFRFT were all really great as well.

Eminem does not put on a good concert. It was really lame.

Of course, being in Montreal and partying for a weekend was another major highlight. The after hour clubs there are ridiculous. What an amazing weekend. Montreal is so great. Definitely going to try and get back next year.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-wEQcEbr6aOE/TjjOgvHb2fI/AAAAAAAAAIA/1Mu5P1Trdcw/s816/11+-+2

Kind of dumb...I know I was there.

Anyways, liked the show. Only regret that they didn't play 3's & 7's.

And for those complaining about ringing in your ears, do yourself a favour and buy some Etymotic ER20 High-Fidelity Earplugs (http://www.londondrugs.com/Cultures/en-US/Product+Detail/Computers.htm?BreadCrumbs=Computers;Computers;Vide o%20and%20Sound%20Devices;Headphones;Etymotic%20ER 20%20High-Fidelity%20Earplugs%20-%20Standard%20-%20ER20SMBCF&ProductID=4641213&ProductTab=3) from London Drugs ($19.95). Honestly, if you are dropping $60+ on concerts, these are a necessity. They drop the decibel level enough so that you don't get ringing in your ears (i.e. hearing damage), but they are specially designed to let the music in and sound great.

Third best band I've ever seen live

1. Tool
2. NIN
3. Qotsa
4. Chili Peppers
5. Metallica/machinehead/the sword
6. Green Day
7. Van Halen

Yeah, that's about right for major bands I've seen. The sound quality for queens was amazing and Josh killed his guitar solos.

Eminem does not put on a good concert. It was really lame.

Seriously? Saw Eminem in NYC when he opened for Jay-Z last year and it was one of the best concerts ever. He put on a show of a lifetime...sad to hear he didn't perform well for you guys.

Yeah, it was a pretty blah concert. I'm not the biggest Eminem fan to begin with, but I wasn't all that impressed. It sounded like he was lip synching most of the time, or at least a backing track.

My wife and I are debating - was Homme handing out water or small bottles of Absolut to those people in the front row? We thought they looked like glass containers from where we were sitting..
I was just behind them; at the start it was a bottle of vodka he was sharing, later on it was water.

Awesome show too - sound was incredible. First rock show I've seen at the Jubilee.

No, not bad all. Especially considering Weezer would only attract 4-5000 fans on their own. Not sure about Jane's Addiction, though, but 15000 seems like a lot for that group of bands.

You gotta give credit to X929. they heavily marketed this thing nd put a lot of work into it. Hopefully it works out for them financially, so they do it again in the future.

Went to X-Fest yesterday, and I would consider it a success, with one exception. They only had approx 50 port a potties for the entire area, half of which were in the beer gardens. The lineup for the washrooms was 40 minutes long.

Weezer puts on a damn good show, and a lot of the crowd (myself included) left after their show. They should have headlined IMO. I thought Social Distortion was pretty weak, and House of Pain was good considering some of their band was left in the US with immigration issues.

I get to cross Weezer off my list, always liked them and have the first 2 albums. Decent set, lot of catchy stuff and any music fan cannot pass up the opportunity to see Josh Freese on a kit.

Jane's Addiction was really damn good. Suprisingly good. I've been a massive fan since "Mountain Song" was released as a single but never had the chance to see them before, Perry Farrell might not have the strongest voice in the business but his stage presence is great, just entertaining and fun to watch. Spent most of my time watching Stephen Perkins and Chris Chaney, they have to be one of the best rhythym sections out there right now and no one gives Perkins the respect due. Incredibly strong set, very glad I went.

I was almost gonna call Xfest a huge dud until I heard Weezer. Easily saved it. A bunch of logistical problems, which are partially Xfest's fault, which included instrument malfunctions (ie. RAA), band mates unable to be clear customs (house of pain should have really been called Everlast), probably under 50 porta-potties for 13 000+ people, ATM's running out of cash, and the VIP section pretty much being a joke.

Surely not all those can be pinned on Xfest but they definitely take the majority of the blame. I can't say I was too impressed with the logistics of it, but musically there were some good surprises. MBF always puts on a good show, RAA was a little weak I thought, but that could be blamed on their instruments failing, AWOLNATION was too much screaming for me and I felt sounded way too different than their CD with all the screaming. HOP (ie. Everlast) was pretty decent, loved the Everlast single song and Jump was pretty decent, good Johnny Cash cover as well.

I missed about 1/2 of Social Distortion as I was in the line up for the pisser. They seemed to have lost their edge but still good to hear. Ring of Fire was a great closer. Weezer was easily one of the better shows I've been to in a while. I felt that Rivers Cuomo has a great stage presence but his quirkyness at times felt like he had as crowd interaction as a wet paper bag.

I walked out after that but heard Jane's Addiction was so so.

Mostly went to Xfest for Weezer who put on a pretty good show. Not a lot of crowd interaction but they played some covers and did them pretty well which I liked.

So we went a little before 5 and were there for a bit and realized how long the bathroom lineups were (some people were saying about an hour). We decided we were going to leave for about an hour to grab some food since the ATMs were all out of order, and to use a bathroom so we didn't have to wait in line at Xfest. As we are walking back towards the entrance, one of the volunteers for the festival told us that if we wanted to leave and come back in, there would be a guy handing out tickets as our original tickets wouldn't scan in again.

We are walking up to the gate, when literally two feet in front of us, the producer of the show comes and tells the guy handing out tickets there's no re-entry at all. If you leave, you're done. We asked what are we supposed to do when all the ATMs are out of order and we don't have any cash. We couldn't eat, drink anything, or go to the bathroom because of the line. Producer says they have somebody coming to fix the ATMs and new porta potties are coming (showed up around an hour and a half later). A lot of people walked up to the gate around this time and found out they couldn't leave and were pretty mad since they had to go to the bathroom and the line was like an hour long. I actually thought there was going to be a fight. Apparently the police/security was being lenient with people peeing outside, but I mean, I saw a girl have to go squat by the fence to pee. Brutal planning on their part, and the fact that they wouldn't reverse the decision to allow people to re-enter (they had been doing it up until around 5) was equally as brutal. I saw quite a few people leave even after they found out about no re-entry.

Highlights for me: RAA, The Dudes, SAIL! (the radiohit from Awolnation) and the terrible cover of Foster the People from Weezer (really bad cover but we all got to shout the lyrics to the song of the summer) :)

Surprised to see everybody loving Jane's Addiction so much. Their set was reasonably strong, but parts of it were just so laughable. The one speech (more of a drunken ramble really) started with thanking the fans, took a brief trip to suicide bombers in iraq and ended with the merits of the #####. Too many drugs man, too many drugs.

All in all I thought it was a great concert. Props to X and Union Events for really taking a risk on this. The number of groupons and pre-sales had me worried, but the event was clearly a success (though not without some pretty blatant mistakes). Can't wait for next year.

Sidepoint: X's identity is more than a little confusing to me, and I think it's something they might have to deal with in the next couple years. They started out catering to the heavy metal crowd but have since moved to a more poppy/hipster/Coachella type of vibe. The two groups were clearly present at Xfest and I would say both clashed at a few points. Two very different demographics...

Yeah X will play some Tool, NIN etc occasionally but there isn't a whole lot of heavy stuff played. They're mostly atl rock. The "heavier" stuff they do play tends to be the singles and popular stuff.

X Fest was good, I am really hoping they picked up on some things they need to change for next year. I was scared to drink anything because I didn't want to have wait 30 minutes in line to pee, again.

R A A and The Dudes were great, Awolnation really surprised me. Social Distortion and House of Pain/Everlast were ok for me. Weezer rocked it out though, great performance, I was very happy and it was well worth the wait. I didn't stick around for Janes Addiction.

I was in the middleish of the crowd and some of the people really surprised me. I saw multiple people spitting into the crowd ahead of them, lots of rude people pushing and bumping their way past me. Like just ask, just ask, thats all I want. "Excuse me." and I am happy.

It was Chad VanGaalen. Not sure what was so special about him. I figured it was going to be Pearl Jam under a different name myself.

Pearl Jam put on an amazing show here in Stoon. For anyone who missed it in the funny picture thread...

Eddie "forgot" the words to The Guess Who's "Running back to Saskatoon..." so he sang a few more songs then started over again and invited someone out of the audience to give him a hand.. imagine being this guy?

Unreal, Prince is playing pretty much every major arena in Canada (Halifax? Sask?) and not Calgary. We definitely need a new arena. No conflict with the Flames that week, so it is definitely the Dome that is the issue.

Daltrey in Edmonton Saturday night was a blast. Row 7 - stage centre. It's the end of the tour and he's 60 some years old so some notes he couldn't make / didn't try for and noteably absent from the set list was Won't Get Fooled Again. That said, it was a great show that I'd do again in a heartbeat.

Is he playing Edmonton? It's common for a show to play only one of the two if they played the other on the previous tour. The credit union sucks hard in comparison to the saddledome, I couldn't see it being a venue issue. Metallica, Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, Nine Inch Nails, Tool all played here with fairly elaborate stage setups (well maybe not FF).

He is playing Edmonton. If I remember, the last time he played Calgary it was a small show at the Jube.

The stage he is playing with right now is massive. Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Janet Jackson and Tim Mcgraw/Faith Hill are shows in the last couple years that played Edmonton and skipped Calgary because the Saddledome couldn't handle it.

EDIT: Here is an example of the stage he has been performing on lately

robocop
10-31-2011, 12:10 PM
That makes sense if it's solely due to the size of the stage, Tool and the Chili Peppers did have fairly elaborate setups though, not quite that large. I do remember in Saskatoon Van Halen had the most ridiculously huge stage, wonder why the dome is so restrictive.

getbak
10-31-2011, 12:15 PM
Looking at Ticketmaster, Prince appears to have a centre-stage show.

With the new scoreboard, they can't raise it into the rafters like they used to be able to do with the smaller scoreboard, so there isn't much clearance between the bottom of the scoreboard and ice-level (according to the Saddledome's website, it's only 32 feet: http://www.scotiabanksaddledome.com/site/saddledome/?ID=44).

I kinda like metal shows at The Big Four, it's wide enough of a space that I can usually find a spot with a decent view of the stage from which I can drink a beer and not worry about getting brushed up against by one of the sweaty shirtless guys in the pit.

Yes, it was the smallest crowd I've ever seen.

We originally had seats near the back of the floor, and when we scanned our tickets, it made a weird sound and we had to go to the ticket office to exchange our tickets. We got bumped up about 20 rows because our original seats weren't there anymore. The group sitting beside us had been bumped up from somewhere on the second level to the floor.

The floor and non-Club seats in the lower bowl looked pretty full, but the Club seats were probably only about half full, and the second bowl was completely empty.

Even when The Who were here a few years ago the dome wasn't a sell out by a long shot. There were a ton of tix for sale the day of. Scalpers are a good indication and they were charging below face.

In this very special, one-night-only event, some of today's greatest artists gather to celebrate the music of punk and alternative rock icon, Bob Mould. Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie), Ryan Adams, No Age, Best Coast, Craig Finn and Tad Kubler (The Hold Steady), and Margaret Cho with Grant Lee Phillips will perform songs from Bob's catalog. Bob himself will also be performing.

Even when The Who were here a few years ago the dome wasn't a sell out by a long shot. There were a ton of tix for sale the day of. Scalpers are a good indication and they were charging below face.

You mean in '05ish? I went to that show and it was packed to the rafters. I know this because when we drunkenly started jumping up and down for Baba O'riley, I hit my head on the rafters in section 219. Literally, the worst seats n the house.

Maybe ticket sales were slow near the end or something, and maybe that created a cheap secondary market, but the seats were definitly full.

Roger Waters: The Wall

Edmonton, May 28th

Another major tour skipping Calgary. Awesome. We really need a new arena.

Also, an interesting note about that Who concert in Calgary in 2006. For some weird reason, it appears to have been professionally recorded and some videos are up on youtube, with spanish titles...

Endless Wire was the name of the Who's album that came out in 2006, and I believe the tour as well.
As for the recording they actually professionally recorded each show, and then put them on sale. Here is a link to buy the Calgary show:

Nope....hockey took up my weekend.....3 minor hockey practices, 1 game, 2 Flames games, 1 Leafs:bag:. Would have been a decent show though! Here is the setlist : http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/dan-mangan/2011/macewan-ballroom-calgary-ab-canada-73d19a6d.html

He didn't play the song that I would most like to hear live though :

Regarding death and dying : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5QkAs1eC_0

Oh when death does walk you home
They will take your bones
And rest them peacefully

And if this is all too much
You know death, and such
What's the rush

I bought a house upon that hill
Went and made it filled
With things

And every year when Autumn stirs
The birds use their wings
Where do they go
People want to know
Some say Heaven
Some say Mexico

Would have been brilliant live! If you want to hear what he is like live on I-Tunes has his Sasquatch performance from last spring available as KEXP free podcast. Best part of the performance is when he predicts that Vancouver is going to win the cup in the next couple of weeks not realizing the impending epic fail that was about to occur. That podcast will forever hold a special place on my I-Pod for this great moment in time. The moment when the cup was all but sealed up and the unexpected happened. Good singer, bad taste in hockey teams.....

Yeah I've never seen Megadeth or Motorhead actually, so I'm really looking forward to this one. After this show that'll only leave Anthrax left to complete the Big 4 of Trash live experience for me.

If only that Big 4 would do a proper North American tour instead of the small handful of shows they've done.

That Big Four Building is the absolute worst in terms of sound and sightlines. 3/4 of the way back all you can hear is a washed out mess, then you have pillars blocking your view. One set of double doors to let people in means a 45 min wait outside in the cold. Hate that venue.

If Hüsker Dü or Sugar were before your time, do yourself a favor and dig up their old catalogs. Both venerable bands were fronted by Bob Mould, and an all-star assortment of music luminaries assembled to celebrate the music and legacy of Mould’s vast catalog at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Britt Daniel, Ryan Adams, Dave Grohl, No Age, Grant Lee Phillips, Margaret Cho, Craig Finn and Tad Kubler of The Hold Steady all paid tribute by running through classic Hüsker Dü and Sugar songs. Mould is touring in support of his book See A Little Light: The Trail of Rage and Melody and hinted he may tour next year to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Sugar’s Copper Blue along with recording a new album. Check out the pictures above and a few videos below.

Pretty much, it's just him on stage behind a piano playing samples of all the songs listed. He played Doves Cry pretty much the whole way through, but all the other ones were only about 30 seconds of each. I don't think he was playing anything on piano, I think he was just hitting a button and then singing over it.
