Pearl Jam and QOTSA announcements on the same day?
I'd say that more than makes up for crappy-ass X-fest.
EDIT: @ jar_e Ticketmaster lists tickets at $81

I really can't see any band that I don't like on this lineup.
With that being said, probably Uproar won't come to Calgary this year because of that.

Are there rules against sharing presale passwords here?
Save Us Sutter
05-17-2011, 03:48 PM
I've shared a few over the years and never been reprimanded. I don't see why it would be a problem.
For example, the QOTSA presale starts Thursday at 10am and the password is "bronze".

I got some in the Main Floor Left Terrace. Last time I was at the Jube was for Cheech and Chong and we were way at the back of the top level and still had a great view.
Be careful about waiting for tomorrow. I did that for the Black Keys in an attempt to get better seats and it sold out too fast. Now I have to go to freakin' Edmonton to see them.

I really, really hate ticketmaster.
Starting searching at 10:00am sharp. Apparently already sold out of pairs.
Kept searching, soon I was getting some 2nd balcony seats pop up. Kept searching.
After another 5 minutes or so, started getting 1st balcony seats. Still not happy.
After another 10 minutes they decided to open up the floor. Searched there for 10 minutes, never got past row M.
They open up specific rows at different times. I was checking in two browsers and they'd consistently get pairs that were in the same row!

Yeah at first I got a couple in the 2nd balcony. When I tried to buy them it timed out and then started telling me it was sold out.
10 minutes later out of pure desperation I checked again and got the two on the floor. Very strange way to do things.
I still find presales to be the best way to guarantee you're getting in the building for a show that is going to sell out. The regular on sale dates are even more of a shinguard-show due to the increased volume of people on the site.
You might get lucky tomorrow morning, but considering the consequences if you don't.... (ebay) I'll take my Row M or whatever it is I got. The jube isn't a big venue, it's not like you're not going to be able to see.
edit.........and there are pit tickets coming up now. I hate you ticketmaster.

You seem to know the jube better than I... what is your take on the following:
I got 2 tickets for row D on the first balcony today. Obviously this is near the front of the first balcony so they can't be too bad... but I'm debating trying again tomorrow to try and get floor tickets... and I'm guessing I'll find some most likely around the middle... row M or so. Do you think the front rows of the first balcony are better than the middle to back end of the floor? Should I stick with what I have or can I improve by getting floor tickets?

I would keep the Row D tickets on the first balcony. Those are pretty good.
I went back on Ticketmaster after reading the comments here and got Row K in the Right Terrace of the floor.

I usually sit floor but sat row 1 balcony for Alice Cooper not too long ago.
It is a great view, not too far away. Acoustics seemed really quality.
Jube is a great venue. I'd say front of balcony is about equal or better to middle of floor.

awful presale. Hope tomorrow is better
Presale is such a joke. I have gotten better tickets everytime buying them during the public sale compared to presale. The funny thing is you go on Stubhub right after the tickets go on presale and they just happen to have all top quality ones. Even for the presales that allow you to only pick up at the will call the day of the concert, Stubhub will have hard tickets they can send out. What a joke of a system!

05-19-2011, 11:15 AM
Even though I like the Jube it sucks because with a seated floor there won't be any more opportunities to find tickets after the main sale tomorrow like there will be with the Black Keys having a GA floor.

I'd keep those balcony seats as well, not as many people standing in front of you as compared to row 10-15 on the floor.
And HOOT, I'm pretty sure those tickets on stubhub are sold by scalping companies that sell you a ticket in a particular section, then go out and find that ticket for you. They don't actually have them ready to go. There are companies on ebay who do this as well. There were issues during the olympics where people bought from these companies and then they couldn't deliver with the tickets.
It's my view that you can try to luck out on the actual on sale date or you can play it safe and buy what the presale offers you. For a show like this with no GA section, not really a bad seat in the house and a near guarantee sell out, I'll take the safe bet.
Pearl Jam tickets are on sale next Friday at 10am.

It does depend on the venue/artist playing I guess. I think the ones that bother me are the ones where you have to pay for pre-sale just to get the worse seats in the house just so you can be guaranteed to go. I had some buddies who paid $50 for a 'fan club membership' to get presale tickets and by the time it was all said and done he paid the same as everyone else but his seats where almost behind the stage and could barely see the front of the stage.
You would just think that the loyal fans who pay extra to get tickets would get a better selection then what's left over.

I wondered about how this would be, having one whole album played in its entirety... I was giving their first album a couple attentive listens the last few days, and it's certainly good enough to stand on its own.

A quote from Homme from about a week ago:
“I'm not gonna lie: I'm sick of doing the first record,” Homme told Zane Lowe. “I love the first record, but we've never played the same setlist before. But then were playing really deep cuts [after the album performance] because it just it feels like a special night. Were playing really small places.”
Also, in the aftermath of someone almost missing a Jimmy Eat World show, here's a few more concerts that have been announced without a lot of fanfare.

I'm a huge Kyuss fan and was really excited when Queen's first album came out, drove to Vancouver in '98 just to see them. Starfish Room, small venue, got to stand directly in front of Josh all night and practically have conversations with him between songs.
Still love the first 2 albums but can't get motivated to scoop up tickets, I don't think I've really given Lullabies or Er Vulgaris proper listens.

Yes, they probably are. Stubhub is safe. Pearl Jam had a fan club presale a week or two ago, so some people are probably selling those.

Prime Box Office is another new "competitor" that the most of the shows at mac hall seem to be going through now. They have a bunch of the little venues too such as the republik etc.
there is no advantage really and actually I think its a dissadvantage because they seem to only have one location at mac hall to physically pick up the tickets.

The tenclub process was a complete gong show this time around. They ended up going to ticketmaster to handle their orders anyways, because of their broken servers, and the tickets ended up costing slightly more (like 0.50 a ticket, but still!), on top of fanclub costs. They even managed to mess up sending out the instructions for ordering from ticketmaster, and had to resend that with the codes they conveniently left out the first time.
Basically, it wasn't apparent, less than 30 minutes before the ordering, if you were gonna be able to get tickets or not.
Just atrocious customer service. I expect a band that's as corporate as the PJ machine has become to be a bit better at collecting money ;)
That being said, I had row 8 floors the last time they were in Calgary, so I guess there is some merit to it.
Hopefully the band retires soon so I can stop feeling conflicted about belonging to a freaking fan club in my mid-30's. I seriously don't need your goofy newsletters and crap.

Homeless only in the literal sense of the word, not in the context that the word normally implies.
Ben hasn't been living on the streets of Seattle and panhandling for the last 10 years or something.
He just happened to not have a place to live when they decided to give this a go.

Age 43 and sleeping on couches...he's homeless.
When asked where he lived, Shepherd told Spin, "Nowhere. Literally. I've been sleeping on studio couches and at friends' houses. I'm totally broke."
He first found himself homeless following a breakup with his girlfriend earlier this year. Since then, he's been putting all of his money towards a solo album - which he isn't even sure if he'll release.
This is the culmination of more than a decade's worth of struggles for Shepherd. He also admitted that, in 1997, "Soundgarden broke up; my other band, Hater, broke up; my fiancée broke up with me; and then I broke three ribs. I got addicted to pain pills, drank a ton and wound up OD-ing on morphine. I was laid out in my house for five days and no one knew it. It was a ####ing horrible time - this total rock'n'roll cliché."

Tickets for T&S Alberta shows go on sale tomorrow as VIP or Friday for regular.
The VIP includes a pre arranged meet and greet, I am guessing for charity, at the price of 150 dollars per ticket. Kind of a cool feature if anyone has some extra cash they were wanting to donate anyway!
Also I have a question.. I have never been to Stampede before, but I would like to try and get in for the 9th and 10th concerts.
What is this Coke stage and how does it function? Am I looking at a big parking lot set up with a concert at the end of it? I just pay for my stampede tickets then the concert is free? Is it get in at 2 PM because by the time the band gets on you wont be able to get a spot anywhere remotely close?

I know there aren't that many metal fans on here, but Children of Bodom are coming to Calgary June 30, with Devon Townsend.
$35+fees/ticket at MacHall
Having missed them the past 3 times they've come I will definitely be going this time. Not to mention their last 2 albums were pretty 'meh', but their new one is fantastic!

Holy fata, was just browsing Mac Hall and Amon Amarth are coming in August. The tour is called, "An Evening With Amon Amarth" and apparently they have no support, it is just them. They play their new album in its entirety, then a second set list right after of their old songs.
All for $30, this will be a must go as well.

Coke stage is on the Stampede Grounds. It just has a relatively big grass patch in front of it for people to stand. If you pay admission into Stampede ($14 or whatever it is) you can go watch the concert. You basically only have to show up like 45 minutes to an hour early if you're trying to get a really good spot.

Black Keys were awesome, just as good as when i saw them in Vancouver last year. i just wish they'd play more old stuff with just Dan and Patrick on guitar/drums, they really don't need the keyboard or bass. and Cecil as great of a show as they Keys put on, i'm not sure they're quite ready to sell out an arena the size of the Saddledome (Rexall place isn't sold out for the show tomorrow). plus they just fit a smaller venue better, watching them in the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver was fantastic
^^^ Wish I went. I only recently picked up Brothers and its one of the best albums I've heard in the last few years. Outstanding stuff.
make sure you pick up their older stuff (Thickfreakness, Rubber Factory, Magic Potion), it's much grittier and raw than the slick production on Brothers, and leaves you wondering how two guys can produce such a big sound

I've been to a dozen shows in the last 10+ years and usually Everything Is Automatic or Apparitions is a given. Hello Time Bomb and Load Me Up is pretty common to. Outside of that, it's really hit and miss. His tours in 2003-2005 he played a good amount of stuff off of Audio of Being but since then it's really rare to hear anything off that album. I've never heard a song off Last of the Ghetto Astronauts live in all the years I've been going to see him. Which really, would it kill him to play Symbolistic White Walls?
Hopefully the X Pre-buy is a little better then the one today.

MacHall has much better sound than the dome, and the ballroom, imo, is the best rock venue in the city. I'm much rather be 20-40' from the band and be able to hear everything than pay twice as much to be 150-200' away and have terrible sound.

MacHall has much better sound than the dome, and the ballroom, imo, is the best rock venue in the city. I'm much rather be 20-40' from the band and be able to hear everything than pay twice as much to be 150-200' away and have terrible sound.
I always considered that one of the perks of having good taste in music.
That's true. I was about 8' from a guitarist/bassist for all 4 bands when I went to see Bodom. That was a sweet show. I was deaf in my left ear for 2 days though!

U2 has always been one of those bands that I don't mind, but I don't get overly passionate about. That being said, I had some good, last-minute tickets to the Elevation tour many moons ago, and they certainly know how to put on a good show. One of the better "big" shows I have been to.

Saw them last Monday at red rocks in Colorado, similar set although they played pretty noose and left out loud love. If anyone ever gets a chance to see a show at red rocks, do it! Best venue I've ever been to. Soundgarden and the mars volta were amazing. Also if anyone is looking for floor tickets to the Calgary show I have some for sale in the ticket exchange.

So you would agree with Mike Bell's review in the herald?

Sigh. So, this is where we are, this is the position those of us who lived through it, who loved it, who came of age in it are put in.
We're supposed to, with straight face, little sense of self-awareness, and pockets open, be excited for an endless, big-ticket parade of '90s bands that have offered contemporary music nothing of late, save for their legacies. Soundgarden, Jane's Addiction, Pearl Jam - and here we are.
Well, obviously he wrote that before the show. He was preparing for a negative review.
So, I may be biased, but I don't trust a journalist that writes things like (with my emphasis):
Well, if putting on perhaps one of the most ponderously generic rock shows - alt, grunge, pop, classic, dance, Wiggles, etc. - you could ever wish to waste your money on was the goal, then, win!
...
As for a show, good God, that wasn't even part of the equation....
An hour in, it was way, way too long. Seriously....
No, there wasn't a lot of spectacle. No fancy light shows, lasers, confetti. I was okay with that. I'll grant that there wasn't a lot of energy -- on the stage or in the crowd (besides the moshers). But it sounded fantastic. Some songs sounded better than their album counterparts. And that's why I go to a rock show, for the music.

When he says they haven't offered anything of late, couldn't the same be said about the eagles, the rolling stones etc... They have been living off of their legacies for 40 years.

They did, and I thought the show was solid, but music reviewers get reactions from negative reviews so not surprised by Bell's column.

hahahahaha, Mike Bell is such a blowhard.
Not everyone has to run around on stage like a jackass to put on a great show. Cornell's voice was great, the instruments were kicking. Maybe he needs to get off the side of the arena and get to the floor where there's a little more action.
