David Copperfield

Any of you guys or gals go to one of his six shows in Calgary? I checked him out for $75 plus various service charges tonight. I was a little disappointed. I grew up watching his specials on TV, and just wasn't WOW'd tonight. It's fairly impressive that he can pull all of his illusions off, but the show just wasn't what I expected.

I saw the 4pm show on Sunday and was wowed on a couple illusions he did. His opening trick when he appeared on a motorcycle and another one where he made a car appear were amazing as well. Same with the illusion where he went to "Australia".

His final trick was where he made 13 members of the audience dissapear from a huge metal box on stage and then appear in the back of the theatre. The chick that I was with was one of the 13 people that were randomly picked. They were all sworn to secrecy so if you guys want to know how he did, I ain't telling. I will say that it is 100% random though. Although some of his other "random" picks seem planted to me

I went to the Sunday show at 4pm as well.
I enjoyed it, but must admit, I think I had high expectations, cause I wasn't just blown away.

I talked to two other people I know that went to two different shows, and the initials on there persons arm when he travelled to "australia" was also SA. Hmm, coincidence?! 3 shows and the same initials?

We went to the 1PM show on Sunday and they went to Hawaii. Not a bad show but I'm more of a quick card trick kind of guy rather then the Grand Illusions. Making the car appear and the licence plate thing was pretty neat but I agree that the "randomly selected people" were a little to convenient like my father said, if you think about it too much it takes the fun out of the show

Did anybody else find his show a little egotistical and for an older audience?

I was at the Sunday show at 4 pm as well, and I agree that some of the "randomly selected" people were completely "un"-random. The "SA" girl wasn't random, I was almost sure, but there were certainly some random people selected. One of my buddies was one of the people involved with the whole license plate/lottery trick (he gave two of the numbers), so that WAS completely random (unless he's been working for Copperfield this whole time.....). I will admit that it was a little self-serving, even though he tried to disguise it as otherwise, but it's still good fun, even for the only two or three really incredible things he did.

There are web pages on the net that discuss some of his illusions, and some of the solutions make sense, but I agree that it takes the fun out of the whole thing. I guess it's just not the same as when I was a kid.

But yeah, the show was definetely geared for a more adult audience. I suppose the children present may not have understood some of the risquee jokes, but they were prevelant nonetheless.

There was the guy that was asked how long it's been since he ummm ya know..did it and he said 1 week. So everyone has a chuckle and he goes on stage. Copperfield proceeds to shake everyones hand and when he comes to this 1 week guy he looks at him and says "let's give it another couple days!"...priceless, had the whole Jube in stitches..

You mean like the first rounder in the first row who ending up grabbing his backyard?

sworn to secrecy? are you serious? People are boud to just tell aren't they? My best guess on that one was that the 13 people who were up front on the chairs were different than the 13 people in the back right part of the theatre.

The car thing was the most impressive to me.

I read on the net that when they put the cloth up to block the 13 people, that is when they shuffled them off stage, giving them ample time to get them to the back of the theatre. Copperfield's stage hands or whatever they're called, are the ones waving the flashlights to make it look like the same people were still behind there.

I saw it yesterday in Edmonton, yes it was to an Australian beach (same as Hawaii), SA as the initials ect.

It does ruin the fun if you know how to do them, but through some common sense, some optical illusions and knowing how the brain perceieves images, some fancy technology and some slight of hand, you can figure out how he does every single trick.

I remember in malaysia and singapore people use to believe he was a "bomoh" or spiritualist capable of evoking the powers of satan. It was hilarious, people would literally be frightened of him, especially when he came to Kuala Lumpur for a show.

The best part was having a bunch of taoist priest challenge him to a ghost battle...whatever a ghost battle is.
