Man I've been meaning to start this thread for a looooooong time.

I caught a few really good episodes in the last couple of weeks. On sat and sun they seem to show 3 in a row and it is usually a mix of new and old episodes.

I saw the one where Skinner gets fired and Flanders takes over and Lisa's Rival.

Man they were both hilarious. It got me to thinking about my favorite episode of all time. My usual answer would be You Only Move Twice. Got me to thinking about the top 10 episodes. Googled it and found a decent list voted on by fans.

Thought this thread could be used to discuss not just the list but the Simpsons in general. New stuff, the classic episodes whatever.

I think it's a pretty good list. Probably wouldn't have included the Johnny Cash episode and Deep Space Homer would have been a bit lower.

But the part of the list that reaffirmed what most already know was this:

Interestingly, all of your top 10 come from the first decade of The Simpsons - in fact of the 100 or so episodes voted for, only a handful were from the 21st century.

Many notable episodes. I also believe Homer vs the Eighteenth Amendment is one of the best as well (season 8, episode 18) ("You're out there somewhere, Beer Baron, and I'll find you." "...no, you won't...")

Still the greatest show of all time, despite the terrible episodes we've seen since 2004.

Anyone who doesn't think Last Exit to Springfield is the best episode of The Simpsons ever made is a philistine with no taste. There are other good episodes, even several great ones, but no others achieve the absolute level of brilliance of this one. There are so many good jokes crammed into those 22 minutes.

The amazing part is that I don't even need to watch half the clips. I just see the title or preview screenshot and the whole scene plays out in my head and I start laughing.

It always amazes me that there is hardly a bad episode, IMO, from Season 2 to the end of Season 9 (although season 9 has a few questionable episodes).

It's not just like "oh they were good for a while" it is literally hundreds (well more than a hundred anyway) of episodes in a row that are absolutely amazing.

The quality in episodes definitely took a hit after season 9 though. Still, the show was still very good until about 2003 or 2004.

I'd say halfway through season 14 is when it completely turned for the worst, never to look back.

That's not necessarily true seeing how "The Principal and the Pauper" was the second episode of season nine, and yet the majority of that season would be considered good to very good imo. Not quite the levels of greatness in prior seasons of course, but still a high quality show.

Quality Episodes from season 9 include:
Lisa's Sax (I love the Twin Peaks reference)
Treehouse of Horror VIII (just the mutants part though)... you call this prime rib, bleh.
The Cartridge family (who would have known Portugal vs. Mexico is actually a good soccer game).
Lisa the Skeptic (one of the better Lisa episodes)
Reality Bites (a great Lionel Hutz appearance)
The Joy of Sect (na na na batman)
Lisa the Simpson (another decent Lisa episode I guess)
The Trouble With Trillions
Trash of the Titans
King of the Hill

While I would hesitate to call any of those episodes classic, I wouldn't call them a major drop off from season nine.

Now season ten on the other hand is when the show completely fell apart; there may be 3-4 episodes that are worth watching. It's hard to really say what exactly happened, but I don't think it was one event. I blame a series of issues (new writers, new animation, death of Phil Hartman, Family Guy rivalry, George Bush is elected, Y2K, dilution of voice talent, over-reliance on guest stats, actors strike, etc).

I also blame the fact that the entire show and team became too self aware of itself and bought into their hype. Everyone seemed to become lazy all of sudden, and the show suffered tremendously as a result.

You watch it today and all the show is all about being "hip" and being a sad pop culture reference. During the shows prime they rarely bothered making light of real world events, or forcing comedy. Really the show has sold out like Krusty the Clown is always being accused of, and is just a tired out hack much like him...

Still my favorite show of all time though! Always has been, always will be. I even watch the new episodes out of routine, but they should feel great shame over the quality of some of the episodes these days. Did anyone watch the Lady Gaga episode by chance? I don't need to say much more to back up my opinion if you did.

Theres so many good episodes in the first few seasons. I really like the one where Bart and Lisa help Krusty reconcile with is father. Or the one where Bart takes over Camp Krusty.
The Halloween special whee Homer sells his soul for a donut and the broad street bullies are the jurors is pretty good too. The division of ironic punishments always cracks me up.

Both are still quality seasons though, better than 7, and of course better than any of the crap they've put together from 10-whatever way too high # its at now. I'd say the first dip in quality happened after season 6, when it fell from all-time status to just a very good show. Then after 9 the wheels fell off.

As for the OP, chalk me up for Last Exit to Springfield as my all-time favourite. Anything from 4-6 is pure gold though. And have to agree that season 5 had the best Treehouse of Horror (Donut Hell, etc..), haha I love in the "gremlin on the bus" part when Hans Moleman's car stops right before the tree & still explodes, man they loved 'splosions that season.

That's precisely why I never got around to starting this thread. To actually say what I wanted I'd have to make a 5000 word post that basically examines every episode. No joke I'd make the OP several times in the last few years (dating back to flip IIRC) but every time it either took too long or was just too exhausting to post everything I wanted.

It covers a lot of seasons I don't care about but that doesn't mean there isn't some funny "you might have missed stuff" from a lot of those episodes. It is huge. Almost so heavy as to be prohibitive from reading it without setting it down on a table first.

The index alone is almsot 100 pages long. Every episode has 2 pages, it has so many cool extras like every single church sign gag. Man some of those are funny.

Highly recommended for the low low price of $22. Compared to over $100 on amazon.ca.

This thing is gonna keep me entertained for a while and may even inspire me to go back and watch 2-9 again. It's been a while.

The book has all of Homer's D'oh's in chronological order. I was laughing pretty good reading through and getting flashbacks and seeing the scene play out in my mind.

I also read a fair number of summaries from newer seasons. On the surface quite a few seemed like they could be solid episodes, one in particular where the Simpsons mortgage their home with a home equity LOC and end up broke and Flanders buys the house etc. Just looked it was called No Loan Again, Naturally.

The episode summary made it sound like a good heartwarming yet funny episode. Then I started reading the quotes.

There was one in particular with Grampa and it made me realize that every character has been so dumbed down and is basically a parody of their earlier selves from the series. It was Homer, Flanders and Grandpa and for whatever reason Grandpa was living with the Flandereses. They ask him about living with Ned and Abe replies "They feed me people food!!". Ugh. He's always been a bit senile but he's never been a full on retard. That is a Ralph line, not one for Abe.

I am honestly surprised they haven't made a full length McBain movie. or at least given him an entire episode. But I guess that would interfere with their plans of having entire seasons designated for episodes where guest stars can play friends of Bart and Lisa. Did anyone watch this weeks premiere? What an absolute disgrace this show has become. They are even running some sort of stupid Twitter/social media contest to create a couch gag... just sad really.

In other news one episode I find that is highly underrated is "Bart Gets an Elephant"; usually I don't really like unrealistic episodes, but man there has to be more great jokes in that episode than almost any other. I swear there has to be a great line every 30 seconds.

Here are just a few of my favorites:

Bart: Uh, it's hard for us to leave when you're standing there, Mom.
Homer: [cheery] Push her down, son.

Homer: All done.
Marge: You're not done. I want you to throw away these old calendars
and TV Guides.

A friend and I (both huge Simpsons fanatics) used to be able to take pretty much any random object or phrase given to us and somehow relate it back to a Simpsons episode. Not sure I could do it anymore, I don't watch nearly as much as I did in high school.

It's pretty mind blowing to talk to younger people at work who are in their young 20's and chat with them about Simpsons. To me growing up with that show, especially during the golden age of season 2 to 8, it will always be one of the best tv shows ever. For teenagers now Simpsons is a pretty average show on Sunday that reminds them of Family Guy. Not that I don't like Family Guy, I do, but it pales in comparison to the genius of season 4 of Simpsons, for instance.
