I went in 2009. Had a good time but once was enough. Sensory overload.

I take it you are heading there? Do you have a full 4 day pass? What events are you planning to take in?

Yup - full four day with preview. We came last year as well and it totally blows away the one we have in Calgary. It is not even a remotely close comparison.

I'm surprised there aren't more people heading out there with the interest in the earlier local thread. But I guess it is not exactly a cheap trip.

I would love to make it down to this one year, slowly I am convincing the GF of how cool comics are.

It's weird too because for an imaginary girlfriend she sure has a strong opinion...

Lol, it is actually not that much in the way of comics relatively speaking. It is pretty much all entertainment in general. The big three gaming consoles are here along with major publishers. TV and movies - heck one of the biggest booths is Sideshow and their crazy collectibles.

I'm looking at a banner for Robocop/Omnicorp right now. :)

I wish! The Hobbit panel this year would have been worth the trip.

Had the Firefly/Serenity reunion been announced sooner I would have strongly considered it. Went to the Calgary one for the first time ever this year and enjoyed myself. So I would imagine something massive like San Diego would be cool to see at least once.

I heard someone say you have to get tickets 5 years in advance. Is this true?

Not sure if it's 5 years but it might be a couple. They had to start limiting the number of tickets sold because of the huge demand and congestion.

The Calgary comic expo might have to start doing that next year.

They should do a full three day event, Fri-Sun and a sneak preview Thursday night for people who want to purchase things.

..and fix that bottle neck of an entrance to the main floors.

Good idea about Thursday. Run no events and have only the dealers selling stuff! I'm all for it!

Actually i'm hearing that they might start on Thursday next year.

wow they just posted up some pics on facebook from the comic con of Dragon girl from game of thrones. She looks awesome without that terrible platinum blonde hair.

In a really bizarre coincidence I just heard in an old Hollywood babble in podcast and they mentioned that tickets went on sale in early February and sold out on the first day and crashed the server. That's feb 11 for the 2011 show so things may have changed.

Or even better educating your volunteers. So when I've been standing in line for two hours, you can in fact reassure me that I'm in the correct line.

Whew, back from San Diego!

As for the above, ticket sales are just for the upcoming year. In 2011, you could line up DURING the convention for a shot to get a ticket for next year if you had a pass in hand (I believe half of all the 2012 tickets were available in this fashion) - those all sold out. They then tried to put up the remaining number online multiple times and their website got hammered due to demand.

This year, they are allowing the people who attended 2012 to go online in a separate event to get 2013 tickets - random public will get a chance after that for the remaining tickets.

Having been to both events, there is simply no comparison. If you are into that sort of convention, you should look seriously at going sometime. The one in Calgary is pretty tame really - but to be fair, they certainly got the one ST-TNG event but outside of that . . . And if you're into exclusives, you can make good coin buying and selling stuff after the convention. But the cost is pretty hefty to go down there. Accomodations can be a nightmare in San Diego if you don't plan ahead. The focus is also much less on "comics" and really spreads out to TV shows, movies, and video games - all pop culture really. Some hardcores get turned off by that.

I also grabbed some extra 30 day Playstation Plus trial memberships. You can get some free games and digital download sales. If anybody wants one, just send me a PM and I'll send the code. However, I believe you do have to have your credit card info with them for it to stick (don't ask me why - it's not my service.)

TLDR: Go to SDCC - that is all.

Badges for 2013 were on sale today for those that attended this year. Four day passes with and without preview were gone basically within a or two minute or so of people queueing up (took about 20 minutes for them to be gone as those queued up completed their registration.) Friday and Saturday gone quickly after that.

The general admission registration looks to be a gongshow again this year.
