I regret not being able to go last year. I went each of the previous years, and saw so many great bands. I can't wait to see who's showing up in 2012, and I really hope Jeff Mangum is on the list.

Calgary is fortunate to have a festival like this. I'll be buying a VIP ticket this year for sure.

Last year was good, but nowhere near as good as 2010...I don't think they'll ever top:
Girl Talk, The Melvins, Built to Spill, The Thermals, Les Savy Fav, Hot Water Music, The Pack A.D., WhoMadeWho, The Black Lips, Kobra and the Lotus, Hot Panda, Ted Leo and The Pharmacists, The Posies, The Almighty Defenders, ####ed Up, Quintron and Miss Pussycat, !!!, King Khan & BBQ Show, Deerhoof, The Bronx, Chain & The Gang, Women, Azeda Booth etc...
The Bronx and Cheeseburger at Broken City, after seeing F-ed Up play Olympic plaza was maybe the best music day of my life. Then the next night at Olympic Plaza with Hot Water Music, Breeders, Melvins and Girl Talk...just ridiculous.

All that said, I'm still really going to miss not being able to go to Sled Island

Never even heard of the Melvins? They started in the early to mid 80's...
I would say this festival is probably not for you if that lineup didn't incite anything but confusion.

Sucks that I won't be able to attend this year (similar to last year). But I am impressed that it's survived and still going strong. I remember in 2008 or so there were rumours that it wasn't making enough money to survive and that it might be cancelled.

But now it looks like things are going strong and we really have something special in Calgary and a music event to be proud of. (And I'm also glad it received 2012 Calgary Grant funding)

I'm considering this, did you do it last year?

Edit: I’d recommend Cowpuncher, saw them perform at The Ship two Saturday’s ago. They were the opening act for Dojo Workhorse (The Dudes other band) but I personally thought they stole the entire show and were by far the best act. I will be seeing them again for sure.

Thurday, looks like I will be volunteering at the afternoon/evening gig at National Music Center. So, I may get to meet the infamous Narduwar from The Evaporators.

Friday afternoon I am undecided, but for sure will go see Thurston Moore Friday night at Theatre Junction Grand. Later I don't know yet.

Saturday at Olympic Plaza for Shabazz Palaces, The Dudes, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, and The Hold Steady. Later maybe Archers of Loaf at Republik.

Feist - can I take you to Peter's Drive-in?

Wednesday I'll be at Dicken's for Indian Handcrafts/And So I Watch You From Afar/Russian Circles then head to Broken City after for Trust. I never thought ASIWYFA would come here, they've been one of my favourite bands for a few years now and they are friggin' epic

Thursday I'm gonna go to Boris @ Commonwealth, then either Hot Snakes @ Dicken's, Shabazz Palaces @ Broken City or The Sadies @ The Legion. Nothing too important for me to see this day so I'll probably just float around everywhere, see what my friends are doind

Friday is looking like Feist @ Olympic Plaza, then How To Dress Well @ HiFi and after that either Boris @ Distillery or Strange Boys @ Broken City

Aaaand Saturday I'll be at Olympic Plaza for Shabazz Palaces/The Dudes/Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks/Hold Steady, then I'll try and see Archers of Loaf @ Republik and Andrew WK @ The Legion.

How did you get single show tickets? At the door?

I think so, depending on the venue. There is a risk though that the venue will be at capacity, and won't be able to allow more entries.

http://www.sledisland.com/advance-tickets-two

While the Festival Discovery Pass (http://shop.sledisland.com) is the recommended way to experience the overall festival, we realize not everyone has the chance to attend all four days. As such there are a limited amount of advance tickets available for select shows through out the festival.

WALKUP TICKETS

Door tickets are available for those looking to catch last-minute action, show up early to get in! Prices Vary. Available at all venues (except for Hot Snakes at Dicken's on June 21st) subject to capacity.

I think priority is given to pass and ticket holders, then walk-ups are allowed entry. I will know more about how this works Thursday (working the doors at National).

I think you will be fine. I plan on getting there around 10:30-11ish.

If last night was any indication, unless you come like 10 minutes before The Antlers go on you should be fine. From what I heard from people coming in, the longest lines were about 15-20 minutes for people with passes and tickets and that was about 10 minutes before the Dudes went on.

I think it will be a little busier tonight, but not that bad. Just a guess though.

Still not over it. Wake, putting the dog to sleep, atrophy and I don't want love were all so great. But Wake especially.

The combo of Indian Handcrafts/And So I Watch You From Afar/Russian Circles last night was just incredible. I still can't believe I got to see ASIWYFA in Calgary. The secret band there ended up being Boris, and while I'm disappointed I missed them, there are still other opportunities to see them this week. Glad I got to see Trust last night too.

The comedy show at the Auburn Saloon was excellent. I saw 8 bands at the Legion. Ketamines, Bloodhouse, Grave Babies and Fist City all had blistering sets. One dude was taken out on a stretcher with a head wound.

I feel like I was witness to a historic event, seeing the reunion of The Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet. IIRC, they have not played in 17 years, and they are only doing two shows. I got the limited edition poster, signed by the bass player Good. They were well rehearsed - no rust at all, and didn't miss a note.

It sounds like there were great shows at Republik and Dickens too.

Today I am at National Music Center - hope to get to Dickens later.

Troutman, did you catch the Shrapnelles? Did they have a short set or something? I went over a little before 10 to catch the end of their set but there wasn't anyone on stage. Stayed for a couple songs of the Ketamines, wasn't really for me though.

Heading to the Block Party after work and then to Dickens to catch Miesha and The Spanks. I think tonight will be an early one though, I'm exhausted.

The Shrapnelles only played for about 20 minutes. It was a really sloppy set - I think they were trying new material. The other time I saw them they played garage guitar rock, and last night was more synth-y and new wave-y. They were wearing masks. The music wasn't great this time, but they are damn sexy.

My band Night Committee (http://www.nightcommittee.com) plays twice - tomorrow night with Hot Snakes at Dickens and saturday afternoon at Broken City.

Hot Snakes have been my favorite band for a decade. Still can't believe we're playing this gig.

Come out and catch us if you get a chance!
Is John Reis touring with them? If so, you should ask him to bring RFTC next year...or even Night Marchers.
If not, you should tell Rick Froberg to bring John Reis/RFTC/Night Marchers next time!

Hayes Carll was fantastic last night, he is a guy who you can tell just loves music and the stage.

One thing I did find odd was the attendance at the show. I tried to buy individual tickets a couple of weeks ago and it said the show was sold out, but Theatre Grand was only about 70% full during the whole performance. I assume they only sell so many individual tickets and reserve the rest of the seats for those people with wrist bands. It really wasn’t that big of a deal, he didn’t seem to mind. I did feel a bit bad for Jolie Holland however. By the time she hit the stage at 9:30 most of the people who were there for Hayes had left. I’d say there was maybe 50 people in the place by the time she finished her set. It was pretty obvious she was annoyed by this, making a few comments in between songs.

Ok, Thurston Moore was outstanding. Windom and I were lucky to get in as the venue was too small for the demand. We missed the first couple songs, but our patience was rewarded.

We went to Bamboo next to see Windom Earle - they were great and did some karaoke with the crowd. Much love and hugs between everyone. We were then blown away by Magas (see him tonight at Legion) and then the festival highlight Duchess Says - see them tonight at Distilery IIRC. Highly recommended.

This is cliche - pick a venue at random, and see some bands you never heard of.

I wanted to see him, but I was at the comedy show at the Auburn Saloon. That's another place that was too small. I only got in because I paid for the "Plus" pass, and got to go past the people waiting in the rain.

Then I went to the Legion (where there was another #### show at the door) to see the Reigning Sound and Nomeansno. Great performances by both.

Free MP3: Thurston Moore debuts first track from new band Chelsea Light Moving

http://www.slicingupeyeballs.com/2012/06/22/chelsea-light-moving-thurston-moore-burroughs-mp3/

Moore has started a new band called Chelsea Light Moving (http://chelsealightmoving.blogspot.com/).

The band, which will release an album on Matador, finds Moore joined by guitarist Keith Wood, bassist Samara Lubelski and drummer John Moloney. The track “Burroughs,” inspired by the last words of William S. Burroughs, was recorded and mixed May 18-20 in Easthampton, Mass., according to the record label. A second song is promised “in a week, even sicker.”

Matador’s announcement suggests that Moore’s remaining solo summer dates in Calgary, Missoula, Mont., and Boulder and Denver, Colo., will actually be Chelsea Light Moving shows, after which Moore returns to Boulder’s Naropa University (http://www.naropa.edu) to teach a summer writing workshop for the second consecutive year.

I loved "Burroughs" at Sled.

So Andrew WK was the craziest thing I have ever experienced. It was a complete riot, which ended with the police pulling the plug because things were getting too out of control. Pretty sure there were three ambulances waiting outside the Leigon after the show. It was insane. That dude has things figured out.

The Dudes sounded kind of mainstream for a festival like this.I really like Malkmus as a guitar player, but his songs meander too much for my liking. The Hold Steady were solid - too bad the rain had people running for cover.

Calgary comes alive as Sled Island comes of age

http://www.calgaryherald.com/entertainment/music/Calgary+comes+alive+Sled+Island+comes/6831914/story.html

The past four days, the entire downtown core and surrounding areas came alive like no other non-sports or Stampede related occasion, with the streets packed with those making their way on foot or by bike to one of the more than 30 venues, or loitering in front, waiting to get in, having a smoke or a chat, or simply not wanting to leave after the last note had been played.

It was the year that Sled, arguably, hit the big leagues.

Couple of things Troutman.

1) I knew I saw you at the Olympic Plaza show on Saturday. I probably should have dropped by to say hi, but it looked like you were having a decent time.
